Thanks so much for this lesson, Rob. Your method is so helpful. You keep stressing the mantra 'simple', which really helps. Most importantly however is your thorough explanation of sll the pieces that make up the complete picture (,or song, actually). Looking forward to learning more from your channel. Please keep up your excellent work!
I'd never played any instrument until I was 45 years old, when thanks to RUclips, I taught myself to play guitar. 16 years on and I now play Banjo, mandolin, dulcimer, and harmonica. I'm now learning piano and saxophone. You are so right about singing whilst learning to play and instrument. I always sang at the same time as I learning guitar, as I found it the best way to know when to make the chord change and to keep the correct rhythm them and timing, it was like I became my own metronome. I have since met so many guitarist that find it difficult to play and sing at the same time, because they never did it when the learn to play. I have taught several people to play guitar over the years (helped) and I always tell them the same thing. The words don't have to be 100% correct, but the song needs to be in your head. Hum if you have to, sing the chord names, but if you intend singing later, do it whilst you learn. I also believe that listening to the music that you are playing, whilst singing, eventually works back the other way and helps keep my voice and phrasing etc in check. I'm no music expert, far from it and I've never had a formal lesson, can't read music etc. But this has been my experience. I'm now playing Knocking on Heavens door on the piano and of course singing along to what I play. I don't know if you'd be interested in doing some more lessons of easy classic rock songs, of the period, but if you were, I'd definitely be interested. Thanks for a great lesson, I really appreciated it. Kind regards Clive. NSW Australia...
Thanks Clive. Great you’re playing all those instruments. I originally started on guitar too - in the folk clubs! Yes, I’ve got plans to start creating more piano and singing stuff in here. I’ll tag you when it happens. Thanks again. Rob
