Paris Olympics: Spain’s coach wary of physical Falcons as both meet on Sunday in a must-win match
After losing their opening 0-1 against women’s football powerhouse Brazil on Thursday, the Super Falcons face the herculean task of having to beat current world champion Spain on Sunday and also Japan another women’s football powerhouse to have any realistic chance of qualifying for the knock-out stage.
For the Sunday match, both teams came into the game with contrasting fortunes from their first matches.
The world champions edged feisty Japan 2-1 to be top of Group C with three points, while the nine-time African champions were pipped by the odd goal by Brazil, and need the maximum points on Sunday to renew their hopes of a place in the last eight.
With no injuries in camp, Coach Randy Waldrum may stick to the team that started against Brazil on Thursday, though Michelle Alozie may start from the left back to allow Nicole Payne, who showed great spirit when she came into the game against the South Americans, to operate from the right side of the defence.
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade said on Saturday: “We missed quite a few chances against Brazil, and they took their chance’’.
Elsewhere, former Falcons forward Desire Oparanozie has predicted that the Nigerian team can still qualify for the knockout stage.
Nigeria finds itself in a challenging Group C, often referred to as the “group of death,” alongside formidable teams like Brazil, Spain, and Japan, all of whom have a strong history in women’s football.
Speaking on 54footballX, Oparanozie forecasted that Brazil would be eliminated, with Spain and Japan taking the top two spots, and Nigeria securing third place.
“Yes, we will come out,” she affirmed when asked if Nigeria would progress from the group stage.
She elaborated: “It’s between Spain and Japan for the top spots, and Nigeria will pick the third place. Brazil is going home. We will lose one, draw one, and win one.”
After the match against Spain, the Super Falcons will conclude their group-stage campaign against Japan, a game that could determine their fate in the tournament. Elsewhere, Spain head coach, Montserrat Tomé is expecting a difficult test against the Falcons.
Tomé labelled the Super Falcons a physical side.
The 45-year-old also identified captain Rasheedat Ajibade and reliable goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie as Nigeria’s biggest stars.
“They are a physically very strong rival, who will take everything to individual and physical duels,” Montserrat Tomé said, as per Marca.
"It will be very different from Japan because they will let us play less. We have studied them well and I would highlight that they play a lot on the left side, where there is an Ajibade that we know well, and that they have a goalkeeper, Nnadozie, who has a fairly long serve and is quite good.”
