2006 and 2009 are the two years where Jean was the right combination of gritty and humorous/theatrically light long-term. Early (2004/2005) Jean was absolutely fantastic, more than she ever was (2005 especially), but a bit too intensive to be watched for more than so many episodes at a time, and in any road that was just one side to her. And in the earlier/middle-half of Santer’s era (and after October ’09) was/is mostly a joke. Harwood for all her flaws nailed the characterisation of characters like Jean and Bradley a lot more than the likes of Santer and Kirkwood tended to. These clips are refreshing to watch.
The actress was always terrible. They should have got someone else to play Jean. The character is supposed to be mentally ill and vulnerable not irritating and unpleasant.
What’s even more heartwarming is that this is pretty much the same day she’d been released from hospital. The last time we’d seen her she was lying stuporous in her hospital bed and her bare feet covered with blood. Her initial journey and (partial) recovery was brilliant to watch.
