I’m not a fan of most of the lyrics, but I agree the production is absolutely mint. While I’m not thrilled with most of the songs (How is “Enter Sandman” written by the same geezers what wrote “The Thing That Should Not Be”? ), the good songs are GREAT. “The Unforgiven”, “Wherever I May Roam”, and “The God That Failed” are utterly brilliant. I think the subtle touches of unconventional instrumentation in “The Unforgiven” and “Roam” are some of the most brilliant touches on any album of the 90s.
When I lived with my dad, he used to wake me up on the weekends by blasting this album in the next room over, to the point that the walls shook. What a way to be woken up. 😅
Same heard enter sandman on the Friday rock show. Didn't even know who the band was til I found a metallica home made tape from a friend and just thought I'd listen to it. I was like wow that's metallica.
1991 Albums Metallica-Metallica Pearl Jam-Ten Nirvana-Nevermind Faith no more-Angel Dust Guns N'Roses-Use your Illusion 1 and 2(my favourites) Soundgarden......... I think the greatest year in Rock History
According to Hetfield, The Struggle Within was written during the band's last day in studio. He admitted that the “struggle within” was the trouble he had coming up with lyrics for the track. He also admitted that, looking back, the song also represented the anger that he was feeling at the time. That’s what let out James loud scream near the end of the song. It is also the shortest song on the album.
Now that you’ve heard the whole album, you definitely need to check out their documentary on making this album called “A year and a half of Metallica” the whole recording process for this was awesome to see.
"Sad But True" will always be the 'Tallica song I remember opening the concert (I forget which show cuz I saw them several times live).. but the bass hit so hard in my chest I could hardly breathe. So fuckin awesome!

I was a huge Metallica fan for 7 years already when this album dropped in '91. Make no mistake, there was far more love than hate for this record. It still sells like crazy 33+ years later. The main reason TBA got hate is because a lot of gatekeeper fans claimed Metallica sold out by trying a different, more mainstream musical approach. Those fans wanted Metallica to keep making the same thrash record over and over forever. That's not who Metallica was or is. They seek to evolve, change and do what they want while ignoring outside pressures. That's why they're still relevant 42 years after their first record release. TBA is not my absolute favorite Metallica album. But it's still truly great in its own right. It's a landmark album that changed popular music permanently. Metal music as a whole benefitted from this release by bringing metal to the masses in a way no other band had been able to before. It's just a fact and most every metal band will acknowledge that, even if TBA is not their favorite Metallica record.
I discovered Metallica and all metal music when my husband was overseas during Desert Storm. Listening to that heavy music got me thru those terrible months.
God that failed and my friend of misery, glad you like them! 2 of their most underated songs! Seen them live 4 times, and the one time they played the god that failed was unreal and unexpected! (Was up there with orion when they did whole puppets album live for 20 years)

I am SO happy right now! I was in a bad car accident that caused nerve damage so I have to be careful about heavy metal head bangin'...but for Metallica, I will SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES.
Fun Facts: from Google, the Snake from the Gadsden flag, a symbol with origins in the American Revolution, which often is associated with Individual rights and opposition to tyrannical government. The Gadsden flag also features the motto "Don't Tread On Me" which is the name of the Black Albums sixth track. Peace 😍✌️ Gary 😃 Great Reaction👍
I have never enjoyed watching someone truly enjoying, appreciating and FEELING the music than I have you. So happy to have found your channel! If we'd like to request a song for you to react to, how do we do that?
It's good to see reactors doing the whole albums now - more and more are reacting to full albums not just one song - back in the day - when I was a teenager throughout the 80s - we went to the music store to buy the new releases - we brought to our friends who were all waiting - we put the cassette tape or CD in the ghetto blaster and turned it up to 10 - we sat there and listened to the new album over and over again - that's how you are supposed to experience music
James played nothing else matters alone with just a spotlight, spring on the stage steps. Pitch black except him. Then BOOM! The rest of the back came in! Fucking amazing
Oh this will be a good one. This is the album that got me into metal in the Summer before 8th grade (that's 13/14 yrs old here). It's what got me playing guitar (along with Nuno's insane sh*t from the band Extreme), and it helped me plot what I wanted for my future even further in a sense with "Wherever I May Roam." There's an RV in the driveway right now I mean to fix up so I can finally live that song, and half an hour ago I unpacked and put the Gibson Acoustic I learned these songs on back on a stand in the studio. 1968 J-50 for anyone who GAF, it was in the attic when I got to earth. We always come in with the tools we need to fulfill our purpose.
OH Now that you know all the music, look up "A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica" - it's a band documentary of the entire recording of this album and it's Fing Awesome. Not for reacting, for you.
I've never sat through a whole album review before. But this album with you Mollyboy was worth the ride. I'm a Metallica fan but never bought this album. I'm buying it tonight! Thank you for reintroducing me to a killer album!
Dude! Bro! Your reactions take me back to when I first heard this album! I truly appreciate how you go about reacting to the songs we grew up with. You show an honest and unbiased interest in this and with the journey you're on... "Bruv"... you have a long, long, trek to hike! And I'll be there watching... and wanting so, so much to go back to those days when I blasted this into my foamed earphones from my Sony sports yellow walkman on my way home from school after missing the bus - again. Truth be told, I missed the bus a lot just to sneak in a smoke or two. Keep at it, my man! you have so much to get through!
MollyBoy, you have officially made it into the headbanger community! Been watching you from the start and seeing you singing the lyrics, knowing the beat changes / solo's and head banging perfectly to the beat, especially to Wherever I May Roam, is fucking awesome, not to mention seeing you listening to the songs you have missed from the album and trying to decide which one is NOW your favorite. CONGRAT! btw... Don't Tread on Me, WILL grow on you. It is a purely American thing from our Revolutionary War with Brittan, basically meaning , if you come at me, you better come hard and right or you will get your ass handed to you. "The “Don’t Tread on Me” slogan can be traced back to the American Revolution, when it was featured on the Gadsden flag. This historical flag consists of a yellow background, with a coiled rattlesnake and the words “Don’t Tread on Me” displayed prominently. The phrase symbolizes a warning against infringement on personal freedoms and rights. In its original context, it represented the fight for independence from British rule."
The year after this came out I was spending a year or two hitch-hiking back and forth to bristol from london for college with the Black album on a loop-playing walkman... I know and love every NOTE of this album. The soundtrack to so many miles.
Bro, you don't even understand how much I've been looking forward to your reactions to Don't Tread On Me, Through The Never, and The God That Failed! Don't Tread took quite a while to grab me, too, tbh. It eventually became one of my favourites.
Dude, you NEED to listen to Kill ‘em All… I mean, you need to listen to anything Metallica touches really… I’d love a reaction on every album to be honest man lol I love the impact Metallica can have on us, they are truly special 🤘
"Don't Tread on Me" hits deep in my American heart. Everything from the name of the song, which is from the Gadsden flag from the Revolutionary war, to the imagery of the rattlesnake, which has been the symbol of the USA since it's inception, to the intro guitar lead ("America" from West Side Story) to the allusions to Patrick Henry (Liberty or Death), Francis Scott Key (What we so proudly hail), and especially Benjamin Franklin (Never begins it, never surrenders / Shining with brightness, always with surveillance) says 'Don't fuck with America'. Song gets me hyped every time.
Dude, Of Wolf And Man and Don't Tread On Me are superb. Definitely growers! You will love them both after a couple of listens. Gets the chorus and the attitude and you'll be hooked. Of Wolf and Man is Kirk's influence with his love of horror movies. Werewolf transformations and running wild. Perfect. Great video pal.
Holier Than Thou is my top on this album. People gave it hate because they commercialized a bit but it brought a lot more people opened to metal which I think will never die.
My Friend Of Misery is a MASTERPIECE, many people agree it is (somehow lol) their most underrated song! Please react to INAMORATA live in CDMX, best song from the new album 72 Seasons, an 11 minute masterpiece that many consider My Friend Of Misery pt.2!! I know you will love it!!
This was the album that introduced me to the band. It was 1994, and I was on the bus with my friend. He told me to take this home and listen to it. I borrowed it for the night, listened, and took it back. He looked insulted. "Take it home this weekend, and LISTEN to it" And so I did. I remember skipping through at first, and then I found "Of Wolf & Man" and that was it. I was hooked. 30 years later, 11 Metallica shows (1 of which was my sons very first concert) and I'm still very much a fan. Sonically, this is their best album. The drums are maddening. The bass is audible. And the riffs are memorable.
Check out Inamorata, it is the spiritual sequel to "my friend of misery" it is slower, however it is an amazing song and MetallicA's longest song to date at 11:10.
Since you listen to these albums through Spotify, I wouldn't mind seeing the lyrics flash up on the screen capture. Rather than the static image of the song list taking up a quarter of the screen space. Keep up the good work. Been watching for a while and enjoy your stuff. 👍
When someone asks me what the most important album in your life is. THIS is it!! I grew up with this album and it made me love metal. I love (almost) every track on this album!! Not because its the most intricate musik but because its just great metal!!
I'd heard this whole album non-stop one whole drunken wknd in a "hoopty" w: 5 Navajo dudes & chicks driving from their 'Big Rez' in Arizona to & from Albuquerque, New Mexico for a Metallica concert, so I learned to hate this album, & yet I also learned to love it with it's crazy memories, especially because those friends of mine back there & then have all passed away...RIP '90's...🤘
This album came out when I was a senior in high school! Saw them 2nd time in 1991. I remember no radio play for them n no music videos until "One". If you wanted to hear them, you had to buy the album or go to the show. I did both! Many hits on this record! Alright Mollyboy. You have to do Kill em All. 1st record I heard.
A big chunk of this Album was recorded with producer Bob Rock in Vancouver - Metallica's The Black Album was recorded in part at Little Mountain Sound Studios in Vancouver, British Columbia - 1988\89 Motley Crew also recorded Dr Feelgood there ( girls girls girls is about the Vancouver Strip Club Scene ) - Both Albums went on to become both bands best selling albums .
It's possible that never has a screencap encapsulated the experience of hearing this album as well as yours has. An uncle who was trying to influence me to study rock music gave me this to listen to when I was a teenager and I can freshly recall just how transported and amazed I was by the compositions. I did not have a mirror but I am certain I made the same face as you did at some point.
Mate, it’s definitely worth going past the black album, the next album from the black album is Load, then Reload. I don’t think you’ve listened to one song off Load. If you liked my friend of misery there are some deep cuts of the same feel on load, Bleeding me and The outlaw torn. They are unbelievably good songs. Maybe start with the hits though like until it sleeps and king nothing. Please listen to Load

Only in real life that flag is usually either White (go figure) or Yellow (more appropriate these days)
Struggle within is freaking badass, the aggression in James's voice is on another level🔥
Well, that was throughly enjoyable. Brought me right back😝🤟🤘❤
Next album - Load- will be great..
Your reaction...with your mouth open on God that Failed is exactly how we felt in 1992.
Wherever i may roam is one of my fav Metallica songs as is Nothing else matters, that song put them on everyones playlist it was so good
James played nothing else matters alone with just a spotlight, spring on the stage steps. Pitch black except him. Then BOOM! The rest of the back came in! Fucking amazing
YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAA!!!!
METALLICAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!
I’m so glad I was a teenager during this time.
Dude, you NEED to listen to Kill ‘em All… I mean, you need to listen to anything Metallica touches really…
I’d love a reaction on every album to be honest man lol
I love the impact Metallica can have on us, they are truly special 🤘
BRO, this is exactly what i needed this morning, SWEET.
Fuck yes bro, so excited for this! I love your Metallica reactions, best band of all time!
Loved this MollyBoy! Metallica rocks.😘❤✨💃❤✨💃
Holier Than Thou is my top on this album. People gave it hate because they commercialized a bit but it brought a lot more people opened to metal which I think will never die.
I hope you do this for the Load and Reload albums. Lots of Gems on them
Metallic one of those bands every Metal band took something from like one of the authors featured in the pages of the Metal Bible!
Fixxxer
He did Inamorata on a livestream and turned it off just before the end section. 😢
This was the album that introduced me to the band. It was 1994, and I was on the bus with my friend. He told me to take this home and listen to it. I borrowed it for the night, listened, and took it back. He looked insulted.
"Take it home this weekend, and LISTEN to it"
And so I did.
I want to love that song SO SO badly but I just cant not think of Lenny Kravitz when I listen to it 😭 kinda ruins it for me
Since you listen to these albums through Spotify, I wouldn't mind seeing the lyrics flash up on the screen capture.
I’m 38 and the black album is one of my favorites! I also love s&m, garage inc. load and re-load
Mollyboy, would love too see a full album reaction to Smashing Pumpkins "Siamese Dream." 👍💯
this tour was awesome live, so glad we were there...
Really enjoyed it. Not heard this in full for ten years. Before that , i had heard it well over 100 times. My fav is, of wolf and man. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
That opening riff on "Through the Never" is singlehandedly responsible for grabbing my attention to this album. It's killer.
This Mf feels the music like nobody else 🤘
This album came out when I was a senior in high school! Saw them 2nd time in 1991. I remember no radio play for them n no music videos until "One". If you wanted to hear them, you had to buy the album or go to the show. I did both! Many hits on this record! Alright Mollyboy. You have to do Kill em All. 1st record I heard.
saw em live on this tour in the UK, the only time I've seen Metallica live. Still got a Jason Newsted guitar pick from that day 💗💗✌🏼✌🏼
I have cancer It gave me a stoke had MRI Its loud this got me through It just fine !🤘🤘
Also check out .. Metallica a year and a half in the life of Metallica... the making of the Black album... Amazing.
This album has the best production the best lyrics the best James singing etc…. It’s Metallica at its peak!!
Please listen to Load
bro the bass intro at My Friend of Misery is legendary. Hands down the best song on this album I even have this as a ringtone😂.
Hated Bob Rock for years, but I grew to love this album.
The Struggle Within is such an underrated song and Kirk's solo is absolute fire on it
