This is legitimately maybe the greatest ending to an episode of television in history. The complete and total 180 Carm pulls on T, and the fact that Tony, having metaphorically saved the world for once, gets rewarded with nothing but misery, as he is nearly incapable of genuinely enjoying anything. Lastly, the music is as perfect a fit as there ever could be. Gives me chills every single time, without fail.
This is such a great irony. Tony breaks up with Irina, gets rid of Richie and thus saves Janice, yet it still feels like everything is wrong. For once, Tony did save the world - but he can't enjoy (is he incapable of enjoying it). The music here fits perfectly.
build up and great falling action with great actors and the music along with editing…. she didn’t give a shit what Tony went through from the start. That’s how women can be, especially when pissed. She called to confirm and knew he was really at Janice house, but she had her mind made up, before she heard the story. She gave sympathy for a few seconds and went into boss bitch mode. 😂 Tony left like fuck…. 😢🤷🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️
The wire was good, but the Sopranos was larger than life. The footprint it left behind is still seen in shows like Breaking Bad today. The sopranos completely changed the standard for television drama.
I've rewatched most episodes and the entire Sopranos series at least 3 times, some episodes closer to 10 times. The Wire? I watched it once, and every time I think about rewatching it I go watch a Sopranos episode instead (or Star Trek TNG). The Wire is very very smart, but I can't relate to it, not like I relate to The Sopranos. I'm not a cop, or a journalist, or involved in drugs, but I have a family, and the anxiety they generate, like with all of us - this is why The Sopranos is much more successful. If I was a critic, which I ain't, I would say both shows are equally amazing, beautifully produced and the storylines are well executed. But as a viewer, The Sopranos generates a lot more feelings and the story has more soul. Its like apples and oranges really.
I remember, 22 years ago, sitting in my chair in my single apartment watching this episode. I vividly recall my mouth opening as the song started. I was amazed. Truly impressed by the quality of this show. I said to myself that this may be the perfect Sopranos episode, the perfect hour of television that I've seen (until the Breaking Bad 'Ozymandias' episode). I don't get that feeling often, but when I do, it's almost euphoric.
It was playing in the background before when Janice and Richie had their party at Tony's house.. and then it picks up here with a completely different context. beautiful
@@nelstar4676 I never noticed that! They did a similar thing with Journey's "Wheel in the Sky" which was playing when Vic Musso was doing the wallpaper, and then at the end credits when Tony and AJ are driving the boat.
My favorite ending of the entire series. Tony looked so weak in that final shot after actually doing some good. It was framed perfectly. Great song too.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the way Tony is just sitting there at the end. His face says everything - and the song is just PERFECTION. One of the best endings to an episode, ever. I often go back to watch the whole episode just for this ending alone.
Another example of why the The Sopranos is the GOAT. Tony slumped on the couch, hasn't slept, showered or shaved, and the perfect music. Hell, ALL the music still amazes me.
Im on my 6th go through of the Sopranos series and season 2 always sticks out to me as arguably the best of them all. The music, the drama, that prick Richie Aprile, made for some of the best television ever produced.
Saw this episode for the first time last night, it's my favorite so far. I love this end scene with the music, just awesome. Wish he was still alive, great actor, loved his performance in True Romance in the hotel scene looking for the cocaine, he was a monster.
Show truly was a masterclass. This ending and the song really makes you feel the despair of Tony. The duality of his life just doesn't allow him to be the guy he wants to be, and this ending really makes you feel how lost Tony constantly is.
Carm's eyeroll is some of the best acting ever! The scary thing about the actors is that they often dont remember the scenes the same way the fans do. Apparently many of the actors have never seen all of the episodes.
I get a warm feeling in my stomach when I watch this scene. It's goodbye to Richie for good, and for Janice, until she comes back, and for Tony for settling everything up with Rina.
Dan Jones oh yeah breaking bad was good but doesnt even come close to the sopranos. the sopranos was by far the best show in terms of plot, acting, and the way they filmed scenes was beautiful and extremely intelligent
Dan Jones the only scene that wasnt good was when they edited in livias face after the actor died in real life. that scene was horrific cgi, they should have had her die off camera or just not show her face from the front in the scene
Have to totally disagree... Breaking Bad was the single best drama ever on television...bar none. Sopranos was excellent... But not quite the league of Breaking Bad.
I love Breaking Bad, I really do. But I challenge anyone to give me a more perfect ending to an episode of television than this. I remember watching this live on HBO and was just blown away.
damn i miss looking forward to this show. the wire and mad men are great shows, but i don't think we will ever see the likes of a sopranos ever again. it changed the game.
When I hear this song its a blast of memories, visions and emotions from my life around the year 2000. Back then I was not even aware of The Sopranos, but everything in this show reminds of a simpler life. I was Meadow's age then with all possibilities in life still ahead of me. Had a nice life with all my family around. It was a nice but naive and blissfully innocent life. Now I'm Tony's age and very much aware and in love with the show. The inevitable growing up that we all do makes life more interesting but less visceral. Do I miss those days? yes sure. But what I miss more is hearing this song for the first time. But that's not gonna happen. You get what I mean, right?
I used to fast forward through Tony’s sessions with Melfi, but that was a mistake, because I don’t think we can understand TS without her insights and his sharing despite the fact that he was often lying to her.
And this song is perfect...Tony left thinking *Well I’ll be a SOB!* After cleaning up Richies murder...literally! This is my very favorite episode & ending song, ever. Thank You.
Watching the Sopranos again.on Amazon Prime. The first two seasons were the best. Saw this one last night and I agree the music and the end of this episode are perfect together!. After the Sopranos ,James Gandolfini , was kind of type cast in that sort of character but he was the best in that role he will be missed.
Probably my favorite episode. I will never forget seeing it for the first time...almost fell out of my chair when Janice came back with that gun and killed Richie. Loved Tony's face when he walked in and saw the prick dead on the floor.
Carmella was looking very compact and sexy with confidence glowing. IMO the bet ending in the series. I think it was the way she left Tony sitting on the couch and walked off exit left with the music playing, so cool.
The build up to climax and great falling action with great actors and the music along with editing…. she didn’t give a shit what Tony went through from the start. Anyone notice how much Annie Lennox is in this show? David Chase must be a huge fan. FYI fun fact Chase personally selected/approved every single song.
Tony does save the world , the both worlds he is intimately attached to . Atlas holding up the world his refuge his home is shattered by Carmela’s insistence that he must now hold his life together or face another tragedy yet unresolved moments after saving the world yet again.

It is genius.

Why does this scene give me chills, can’t explain the sheer joy of sopranos, the greatest show of all time
