I’ve been here since you started with the pew pew shooting and your Tacoma was Quicksand. I will be here for whatever you put out as I use all your videos for information to get me able to have my own Homestead. I will watch any video you put out.
Your gear reviews are great, please keep them coming! At least half of your viewers probably wear Vertx apparel and carry Skeletools/OLights. Your reviews typically offer a more useful perspective with good detail and a “why I like to use this.” Thanks for all the great content.
I got into the bare foot / minimalist shoes a long time ago. Back when five toe shoes were a thing, yeah they looked weird by they were comfy. The last 5 years I've had to wear heavy duty boots for work with not a lot of time for other foot wear. I've just recently got back into zero drop shoes and now own two pair of Lems, the Primal Zen and the Primal Pursuit Mid WP. Both are comfortable and good looking shoes while being very practical. Recently did a 11+ mile mountain hike wearing the Pursuits and feet felt fine all the way up and down.
I wear Lems waterproof boulder boots every day for work, and their Oxfords on the weekends. Other shoe I wear a lot is vivobarefoot ESC. Way more grip on the vivibarefoot, but do notice faster fatigue. Possibly due to less ankle constriction/support, aside from differing midsole. I'm gonna need to get the Boulder summits next time. And hopefully they'll release a Boulder Grip in black as well for me to compare.
I love your product review videos as well as all of your overlanding videos. I especially love your annual gift guide video. I enjoyed your series of building your house as I am in the middle of a remodeling my house built in 1960. I too have a lot of land and you have given me some great ideas. The only downside for me if you do more product reviews is I am going to end up buying more gear much to the chagrin of my wife who is more on the frugal side. Thanks for showcasing the Lems, I am currently in the market for new hiking boots. I will be checking these out. Thanks for all of the great videos.
I always love your reviews. We’re similar build and I’ve found I usually like your taste in clothing. I actually got some Lems Boulder boots this last summer! Crazy find in Alaska. I haven’t worn them much, my current favorite shoe is the Altama Maritime Assault Mid. They’re the ultimate practical “tactical” vans style shoes. Great traction, super comfy and fast drying. I found them in my quest for barefoot footwear. I ordered a half size larger and a wide size. I may have to check out the Summits. Great unexpected review. So the deal with barefoot zero drop is that you’ll let your foot flex naturally and your skeleton will move and posture naturally. For most people that is great, you’ll experience less fatigue and less wear and tear to your skeleton. Where boots with high heel drops and crazy support come in handy is for jobs that push the human body to its limit for extended periods of time. Loggers NEED logger boots. It’s like a 3500/350 truck pulling a heavy load. It needs the stiffened suspension to perform under load. But if you drive them empty they ride rough and in some cases you can cause engine and transmission damage if they aren’t being used the way it was designed. Caveat, I just did a bunch of research because I find this topic fascinating. I like learning about why humans face the problems we never used to face.
11:35 You're not really gonna notice it. I don't have any experience with zero drops but if you wear toe shoes the first thing you will notice is your feet will get fatigued and start to hurt at first, because you're using a lot of muscles that you've never used before that extensively.. but was they get strengthened your feet will never hurt again.
You sir need a pair of blundstones. Highly recommend. Laces are a thing of the past. I have worn all the high end brands and I always find myself going back to the blundstone. Try them out.
9:25 Barefoot shoes are amazing. Your foot was designed to walk barefoot and many of the boots/shoes we wear inhibit our foot's natural design. I don't wear barefoot shoes anymore though because they don't have any ones that mimic the look of regular shoes. Every time I would ask people would say "well you can't really make toe shoes look like regular shoes" but Adidas made a toe shoe that looks just like regular sneakers except that it's a toe shoe, but I don't like sneakers so. But I still will only run in barefoot shoes if I have them, or work around the house in them. I used to have some Vibrant Five Fingers that were made of leather that were pretty durable but the sides of the toes were made of this canvas material that would get shredded by rocks and sticks.
I think Keens have been known for their wide toebox forever. Thats why ive been wearing them for over 10 years. Lems are certianly another great boot choice if your boot aesthetic is more traditional and less hiking boot style. And I bet in todays manufacturing quality the Lems will be constructed better. My Keens over the last few years havent lasted as well and those Ive purchased 5 years ago.
I work construction & people I’ve asked about Keen say the same, “They’re comfortable but fall apart within a year.” At least the work boots in a construction environment.
Long time watcher, comments here and there. Full honesty and don't take too much into it, I TRUST YOUR OPINION. It has influenced my life, maybe in not so significant ways day to day, but rather the icing on the cake. I have some mini boats myself and have always struggled with shoes since probably 14 years old (size 13E, 13 wide) My typical experience in a shoe store is just telling the salesperson, bring me whatever you have in 13, which usually limits me to a few choices. REI actually has a decent selection of large sizes and wide options so that has been my go to in recent years. I have been rocking a Timberland classic boot, no toe box or anything for a few years and it's probably the most comfortable day to day, although heavy. Back to on topic, there is a very good chance I'll try these out at some point because of the previously mentioned trust and lifestyle parallels. I do work in an office, but am frequently on my feet, I have dogs and bike and hike and I'm in the dirt daily. I work on things in my garage and in the driveway, build things around the house and normal shoes just tend to break down in 6 months. The quick 10-15 minutes and a little texture videos work perfectly. 🤙
Timberlands are SUPER narrow if you're used to barefoot boots or the Lems in the video. You have no idea how much damage you're doing to your feet you need to try some Lems asap.
You mentioned Converse being narrow, and I've noticed the same, but I found a brand, No Boundaries, that makes a black canvas, white rubber, hightop, that has a wide toe-box. They are very comfortable if you like the Converse style.
Walking around outside is a nice change from a "studio" room for youtube. No need to overthink it, what counts is real honest reviews not tainted by free goods from vendors. I recently found out about foot shaped shoes and bought a pair of Altra's, similar idea to the Lems but maybe not high quality materials. Looking forward to trying out some of this footwear. I see different models have different toeboxes widths, I should probably go with the widest but wonder if the middle ground would fit better. Shame they aren't in any stores near me, I love just trying on several to find the best fit, hard to do when you mail order. Sure you can send it back but you'll never know if another model would be better or worse unless you're able to try them all.
Your product reviews are easily one of my favorite review sources, you’re awesome at it, however it is pretty awesome to see you branching out into things you enjoy doing, cause your preparation/weekenderlander videos are also awesome! So I’d say a random sprinkle of product reviews is good, but don’t do so many that it burns you out.👍
Haven't tried the Summit yet. Started wearing Lems a few years ago and love them. Have 3 pairs of Lems now. Once my Boulders wear out, I'll upgrade to the Boulder Summit.
Yeah there’s some mixed info out there, some stating that there’s a minimal heel to toe drop, but I’m not sure. Source comfortableshoes.com/products/lems-boulder-summit-waterproof-boot-bark#:~:text=16mm%20stack%20height%20(not%20including,Heel%20to%20toe%20drop%3A%202mm
If I did need a boot I’d get these, I wear Xero HFS shoes for everyday, Aqua X Sport for fishing, Z Trail EV sandals live in Honolulu, and Glenn for dressy situations. I have ordered all my Xero shoes in March of each year from 2021 (HFS) (Aqua & Z Trail) (Glenn). I am looking for another dress shoe and found Carets as my Glenn is more thick than my HFS and tends to give my feet some pain. I tried to go back to my Solomon Speedcross 3 and my feet hurt the instant I put them on and had to just wear Croc slides. I guess eventually I’ll have to get a more rugged boot. Xero is also located in Colorado (Boulder). I have looked into Lems and Vivobarefoot.
Always ❤ your content cuz it is always authentic while constantly overanalyzed (sound, lighting, etc). Just keep doing what you do, that's why we all keep coming back.
I think the Algorithm is really favoring emergency preparedness right now, and you’re really good at that stuff. Maybe preparedness products? Or any go bag/get home bag updates? Some tabletop stuff that’s easy for you but still stuff you like to talk about?
You should try the KEEN San Jose Mid soft toe. Very comfortable boot that I have worn for years. I do have lems on their way so I will have to compare.
So glad you got into the barefoot moment. I've been wearing barefoot shoes for years and years and I just snagged a used pair for a steal and absolutely love them as a boot.
I just got them a month ago. So comfortable. Get the primal 2s for shoes. I've had 2 pairs of the primals and has to get the Boulder summits. Probably will be buying the normal boulders for normal walking around. I'm a barefoot nerd after they fixed my foot pain and I wear them when I lift at the gym so I don't have to take my shoes off.
Ha, I just picked up some vivobarefoot over Lems recently and I can't decide if I like them or not, they're very very stiff on the ankle and take a long time to break in. I liked the style of Lems better but the vivo boots were supposed to fit better. Might have to try the other ones.
Definitely have to check these out. I can't wear regular boots anymore after wearing Altra Lone Peaks or Xeros every day for years. Tried some Lems (not the Boulders, possibly Outlander?) for around town type usage, but they hurt the middle of my feet. Maybe the Boulder will be more comfy.
I’m the exact same way about having to wear shoes when I leave the house 😂 yea I wear flip flops inside, I don’t go barefoot ever or just socks… rainbow flips around the house, some sort of shoe or boot when leaving 👍🏼
Gonna give these a try. Try out the Keen San Jose boot. They were the most instantly comfortable boot I’ve worn. Very similar look. Thanks for the review.
The higher heels in boots isn’t to increase your height. It creates an arch (usually with a leather shank in high end boots) that conforms to your natural arch. It essentially provides support especially when lifting heavy gear or rucking.
I love Lems and have been looking at getting these or the Boulder Grip Waterproof one. I have been wearing their primal zens the past year and I love them. It’s hard to have to wear anything else now!
Good shoes and boots. A Colorado company. I like the Chelsea boot. I am more of a pull on boot person. I have been looking at the Telluride. Might look at the Boulder.
The only hiking boots that I’ve found that I can wear all day and has a wide toe box are Oboz. I have a pretty slim foot but they have still have a wide option for ones that have a wide foot. Keen is known for a wide toe box, but once customers would put on Oboz I would say 8/10 times they would switch to Oboz.
I wear Keen work boots everyday for work and/or to work on the house and they're great! I can't get over how lightweight and water proof they are for a steeltoe work boot. I'll have to check out those LEMS considering my favorite everyday shoe is also an Ultraboost from Adidas.
How did you transition from being a web developer to being more active and not sitting down at a desk that much? What do you do now for your main income? You mentioned in a recent video that RUclips is still a side gig and you do have a main job.
Hey Mike, been a subscriber since the beginning days of the holsters bro. I am always looking to see what s good with various brands / gear. Keep on keeping on 👍🏽
You & I must have the same feet. I also have a pair of Lems that I LOVE. Keens, also very comfortable, I have a couple pairs. There is definitely something to say about foot-shaped shoes. Saying that it seems ridiculous that we even make shoes that aren’t shaped like feet. 😂
I work in construction management so I visit jobsites. My Boulders are fantastic, just the tread sucks. They got beat up a little so looks like I have an excuse to get these
The discount code is? 😂🤣 I'm always on a similar quest. My daily drivers are Altra hikers because of their Footshape toe box. I will be looking to grab a pair of these. Thanks for the review.
The one downside of waterproof boots is that IF water gets inside cuz you went through a body of water that's higher than your boot, it takes FOREVER to dry out
I wonder if these would be good for flat footed people I wear crocs a lot cause I’m flat footed and sandles don’t fit most of the time and most shoes hurt my feet anything I get have to be wide even then my feet still hurt
I’m not “in the trades” but I critique the trades 😅 haha I’m an inspector, I would say it’s light duty. Do you think it would still live up to the day to day?
You said you've only been into these over a year... how's the tread wear? My biggest pet peeve with 30+ years of boots and hunting for "perfection" is how the best, most comfortable, and best designs always use soft rubber. I have burned through so many "awesome" boots that went bald in a year or less while the upper is still practically new. I refuse to go drop $300-$800 on custom brand boots that will retread the soles. But I'm damn sick of tossing $100-$200 range every season!👿 Currently running Danner Tachyon 😊 and MACV-1 GoRuck brand, they are both alot like Lems with simple low profile perfection and comfort but very little on the bottom. While both are my new favorites I'm worried about the bottoms lasting.
'Unexpected Chickens' sounds like a low-budget horror movie.
Or a band name really, haha
Have worn these for years. Lems makes quality stuff - good waterproofing too. Their hiking shoes are great too.
@@Ptro1 Yes plenty of long term reviews show how great they last.

Mike, have you done a tractor video yet? Have you bought one for the homestead?
The one downside of waterproof boots is that IF water gets inside cuz you went through a body of water that's higher than your boot, it takes FOREVER to dry out
Good video. I've always liked your style. Will try Lems
Cool boots! a comment and a like for the algorithm and wishing your family the best. Gonna give the lems a try for sure
Hi! Great video! Should i order my normal size, or size up?
I wonder if these would be good for flat footed people I wear crocs a lot cause I’m flat footed and sandles don’t fit most of the time and most shoes hurt my feet anything I get have to be wide even then my feet still hurt
What about the LEM Chelsea boots?
Might have to try the lems out!
Love videos like these. And love boot 🥾 reviews
May I ask how wide your feet are? My feet are narrow and I've been considering these.
Thanks!
Are those the Boulder Summit variety?
Edit: Yes, you just said in the video 😅
Do you t hink i can use this for long backpacking tours? like EU trip for 3 weeks?
Great boots subbed
Love Lems! Such quality boots!
I’m not “in the trades” but I critique the trades 😅 haha I’m an inspector, I would say it’s light duty. Do you think it would still live up to the day to day?
Love the video man, nice boots! 🤙🏻
Been lovin em!
But I'm damn sick of tossing $100-$200 range every season!👿
Currently running Danner Tachyon 😊 and MACV-1 GoRuck brand, they are both alot like Lems with simple low profile perfection and comfort but very little on the bottom. While both are my new favorites I'm worried about the bottoms lasting.
You mentioned Jocko, have you tried his Origin boots?
But are you flat footed or do you have high arches? Because, for me, the flat foot thing won’t work. I need arch support for high arch feet.
