CHEAP Sailboat to live on in the Bahamas! Ep 292 - Lady K Sailing

- Is this the pefect cheap sailboat to live on in the Bahamas? Heavy enough to cross the gulf stream, big enough to live on, small enough to sail solo, and cheap enough to afford. The Beneteau Oceanis 370 is an excellent choice for a Bahamas trip from Florida in 2024. And this cruising sailboat is for sale right now for $50,000.

It would be nice to see you do every month or so a ‘ state of the market’
episode.
I just bought my first sail boat today at age 55. I spent $1200 on a 1982 19’ Starwind on a magic tilt trailer. I can’t wait to get out there! Thanks for the inspiration Lady K!!
You can do it!
The downside of watching your channel is that I get to see other boats that I want. I am happy with what I have. I am happy with what I have. lol
3 months ago we purchased a 1994 Beneteau Oceanis 44 CC in Florida. It's is in excellent shape. The only thing we don't like is the 5'9 draft. But it was not a deal breaker. There are great boats to be had for a good deal you just have to do deep dives for your research to find them, make it your job that you have to look for hours a day. It took us over a year to find ours, and we did fly around the world looking, fulltime cruisers for 8 years and we knew what we wanted this time around . We paid $52 500 for it.
Currently I own a 90s Beneteau and would concur that the furling main can and has been a pain getting jammed a number of times. A new sail did help a lot and keeping the inhaul as tight as possible is a key.
I had some trouble with mine on my Oceania 440 but after upgrading the car on the boom it works flawlessly. If that track or car get damaged or dirty the car won’t slide properly and causes the outhaul to pull down rather than out.
Would like to see you feature a 30' or up, trimaran once in awhile.
Great to see you again!
Hey, thanks! You too!
Just bought a 1993 30’ Catalina in Salem Massachusetts. Not heading south this year but next year me and the dog are taking her on an adventure! Until then I’ll use the remainder of this season and next to get familiar and get it ready to cruise.
You can do it!
What websight do you use to search for boats?
Two quick comments: for those planning to stay at Norman’s Cay marina in the Bahamas (undeniably gorgeous), the nightly cost is around US$370. For an in mast furler the best way to avoid snagging of the main sail is to drop the boom topping lift to ensure that the main sail is in tension. This might mean that the bimini has to be folded away during the furling of the main sail.
Is that price in a marina or just to anchor? Never been to the Bahamas.
Looks cool and a nice review . I’m looking for something to sail around south east Asia . I guess it would be a stretch to get it over here
That is all well and good, But.
What about a full keel 30-38 foot vessel?
Any of those available?
That may make a good episode Tim!!!
Good job as always!!!👍🏼💪🏼⛵️🏝️
Hi Tim, nice boat and not a bad price, but I’m a little surprised you wouldn’t allow $$ to change the rigging. I’m assuming twin spreader mast would be a considerable cost in a year or so. I’m baulking at a yacht in Oz for the same reason, it’s a little on the expensive side but it’s rig is 2015 and with rig replacement cost factored in, it’s over the top.
Enjoying the channel and always envious of your selection of yachts to choose from in the US. 👍
Que Maravilha, se tivesse essa grana estaria indo para lá . Obrigado.
Thanks for watching!
Fun, thanks
Thanks for watching!
Here’s what I think… when I’m ready to switch from flying to sailing I’d like you to skip uploading these “great buy boat” videos to RUclips and just send them directly to me, and me alone. 😉
Curious, what are you flying?
Are you flying a Swift? Great planes. I traded a Mooney M20J for a Cabo Rico 45...

Pilot Sailor here. I can tell you for sure you will enjoy the fuel expense of sailing. While accepting speed is not the goal!
I'm holding out for a William Garden Porpoise in glass 😁
Thank you
Thanks for watching!
I am about to re-rig a 50ft sailboat i bought in the Caribbean. I was really tleaning towards a furling main.
I know I will be sailing shorthanded and at times possibly solo.
Why are you so against them?
Could you do a video on Furling mains Vs Lazyjacks.
Thanks in advance.
Perfect for coastal cruising, Bahamas, Virgin Islands and the entire Caribbean. However I wouldn't take it on the open ocean.
Crazy ass people have done milk runs with 20 footers, that takes a lot of balls though
Why not? Because of the shallow keel?
i’m new to sailing i want a boat i can take in the caribbean and one i can sail to Tahiti , Australia and beyond and recommendations i should look at?
Tim, this is a lovely boat, but how about boats already in the Bahamas? Being from AU, my is spent in SEA, not really a "hop". Often I see various boats "stuck" in Philippines at 'bargain' prices. Labour to fix them up is very cheap vs AU & these boats tend to be swapped between expats. Cheers. ⚓🇦🇺
I want to sail everywhere and do an ocean crossing from Florida to Pepeete what should I look for?
Whats your opinion on the 37 ft Ericson?
pretty sure this 370 is already under contract because I have been looking at it for a month or two
It’s crazy how slightly old boats, look so old. It’s the equivalent to my grandpas 1930s cabin in the interior.
I love these wood interiors! Love 'em! Something warm and comforting about wood.
@@philipmayo4865 I’m a fan of nice wood interiors, but man I thought this was 1970s 🤣😂

Is the problem with this specific furling system? Newer ones are more reliable? Are there types or brand names to watch out for?
Buying the(a) Boat isn't the issue, finding a place to tie it up that won't cost an ARM & LEG is impossible South of Palm Beach! ☹
What would you do about the mainsail since it sounds to be a big problem?
Would this one be fit for distance sailing across oceans? I'm on the lookout for my first boat and (perhaps rather foolishly) would like to consider sailing long distances.
Thanks in advance.
Would like to know your thoughts on a Sirius 40DS
don’t know the Sirius myself, but their reputation is so darn good - as their prices tend to be high. You might have to save for a while…
It’s not exactly a great buy for how much work you have to put into it, granted for people who knows what they are doing, this won’t be much a problem, and that’s the catch, it’s not for newbies who are just getting started, unless they are willing to put in the time and effort to fix it up and see that as a way of learning the ropes
I absolutely love this as I am gearing up to sell my house, cars and everything with them to get a family sized sailboat. We are a family of five. One day I’d like to figure out how to get ahold of you and talk. Do you have a service for this?

What would be a good lake boat to buy to learn on lakes in DFW area, then pull it out and move it to Galveston, TX to sail the Carribean?
For the lake a Catalina/Hunter/Beneteau at around 25 feet. Cheap to run, cheap to store, and user friendly. It's big enough to weekend on or host a few buddies for a night of canasta. For the Bahamas expect to drop $80k on the boat.
i’m new to sailing i want a boat i can take in the caribbean and one i can sail to Tahiti , Australia and beyond and recommendations i should look at
Painted kiel bolts are a Bad sign because it could hide corrosion...
you've done steel, aluminum etc. I don't think you've done a primer on wood boats. You know, the ones with canvas sheets and a forked boom etc. Maybe wood is the wrong term, but you know what I mean classical type old school boats.
A lot of marinas won't even consider letting you in with a wooden boat now. Haul out yards too.
@@LouisBackover
why is that? insurance liability?
What do you recommend a person do to learn to sail? I actually own a 22 foot sailboat and have had it on the water under motor. I haven't had the guts to put up the sails. The lakes around here are so busy, and if I even see another boat on the water, I chicken out. I think I know the basics, but have never been under sail even as a passenger or crew, and like anything else theory when put into practice always has curve and I'm imagining this curve to be huge.
Try it, you’ll love it. Drop cell if you think it’s going to be a problem that’s all.
Find an ASA school, or if you live near the water many colleges will have a club that holds classes.
Get to know one of those other boats, and go out on their boat.
@@bmitch3020 The other boats are power.
@@anti-socialdistancingchamp6258 if they are just recreation power boats, then get out there, raise the sails, and let them dodge you. Just don't try that with large commercial ships and fishing boats.
Is a maxi(9o) 35 for 30k what are your thoughts on this brand?
I'm not sure but i think i missed the beam.
Im going to have to watch it again.
12.5' I believe he stated

tim how do we see your channel about the box truck project?

would you change the mainsail furling to a more traditional method if it were yours?
Converting between in mast furling and a traditional raised main involves replacing the mast, probably the boom and a new main sail, plus a cover/bag for when the sail is lowered on the boom. You may as well get a different boat.
Is it still available
How can I take it to La Paz BCS Mexico...?

Cat or tri maran please 😊
Idk if I pay more than 35 for that boat
So, what about a Catalina 27...
I've got one, completely different category of boat. Their risk is the keel, the original bolts can rust where you can't see it. The electrical wiring is run in inaccessible locations, meaning I need to completely rewire mine. And they came with a variety of engine options. I'm a fan of learning to maintain diesel since you won't have a gas engine if you later move up, and gas has the issue with exploding.
After 50 boat reviews, I am now the proud owner of 50 boats.
Of course I’m kidding. But I do need to he
T my butt out there
I will NEVER own another boat with a Volvo....
Same but Bukh
I live in a high cost country in Scandinavia where the running joke is....... "even poor people have boats, they're just smaller and older".
Considering the age, the faults, the necessity of "comprehensive" upgrading....... i thought 40-45K USD after haggling, was expensive for this one 😳
I would NEVER think to buy a boat like this
BEFORE watch this video
For a FIRST RUN on "nautics" for this price, it's a great price to pay low, AND LEARN A LOT
Before decide to buy a LONG TERM LIVE ABOARD boat.
I really like this channel. I'm learning more and more.
Thanks for watching!
I looked at a hunter 34 this week. I was shocked at the pitiful bulkhead in the boat. Probably ill steer away from hunter in the future. Looking at other 34-40 foot boats that are cruise able. Yet affordable.
I looked at one at the start of the summer too, then i seen the video about the Hunter Legend being the one to buy........... yet to see one up for grabs here in Scandinavia though
Tim....... We need a 40 to 50 foot boat for about 150 plus. Just saying. Thanks for sharing.😊
what about cheap catamarans?
$5,000 tops
LOL, a 32 year old Beneteau with a ton of miles on the engine, and probably more. A crappy furling system. Yeah, this boat isn't worth close to 50,000. If you were willing to spend 40,000-50,000 I'm sure there are dozens, if not a hundred boats for sale in Florida at the moment that would be far, far better purchases.
Pay me $50,000 and I'll take it off their hands.
Good to know if someone need a boat then give U an provision and having on find a solution 🫡
