I had a 3 hours commute total for work during my first job, now i live a 25 minute bike ride away. Still sucks when it rains, but my soul isn't screaming at me anymore. I totally get it.
That's sounds chuffing horrible ("chuffing" is standing in for another word I won't use here ;p) I'm lucky enough to have never needed to commute to work, at least not at any meaningful distance or by taking a train, but I feel awful for you or anyone who has to/had to do that. For me a train ride is a wacky novelty, but for a lot of people it's a daily grind and my heart goes out to them.
I drove 1hr one way for my job for 8 years. I think it really depends on the job. It also depends on the culture you come from. As an American, happiness is last on our list. Lol!
Man, the commute time does wear on you. I live in Chicago. When I first moved here I had like a 45m-1h commute. Eventually when I got a different job my commute went up for a bit. Eventually thanks to covid I got to go WFH and my mental health improved a ton. Went from commuting every day to riding the train maybe twice a year. I can walk every where I need to go in my neighborhood. Not spending 8 hours a week dealing with public transit has been a blessing. It's exciting when you first come and everything is new, but it grinds you down.
Took the CTA during my high school years. Everyday. Blue line downtown to transfer to orange line. Then western bus south … and back home every day. I’ve been on the CTA about 3 times in the last 5 years. No more seeing open air drug transactions or witnessing anymore shooting/ stabbings for me!!! 😅
Oh my gosh yeah my commute was similar! When I lived with my parents it was a car ride to the CTA parking lot and then two trains- took at least 1.5 hrs one way and it was hell- If it snowed it was over 2hrs or so with all the delays. Finally moved out and then it was still about 45mins but I lived right by the train and it was just one train so that was “shorter” but even then it still adds up (that and the fact it wasn’t…the safest area to live and take the train at night and I worked nights so it was an Uber home every day after they changed my hours…not riding that train at 4am by myself nope). Now I live in Korea and public transport is so much better and getting to work is fast and easy. Sometimes you gotta move across the world for better commutes to work 🤣 tho now the trip home…is 14hrs by plane so…
I have a friend who grew up in a danchi in the 80s and 90s and he says the levels of nostalgia he feels for his childhood community are off the chart. He's lived in the US for twenty years but is now thinking of moving back so his children will have a similar experience. That's made me curious to the point that visiting his danchi neighborhood has become one of my Japan trip top things to do bucket list.
wow. it's been 3 years since you've been there??? I've been such a huge fan of you and I'm always rooting for the best in every project or personal endeavor you do!!!
Right? It's weirding me out that I can remember the tiny apartment, the hamster apartment (the one that was one big room) and the boyfriend apartment (the 2br with the tiny kitchen). Feeling a bit like a long-term stalker tbh!
Emma, you have come a LONG way since your first TEENY TINY apartment video! That was my first video that I saw from you and I have been a subscriber ever since your TEENY TINY first apartment!
The other day I was on a train (I live in Japan too) as the train started moving I began to feel a vibration in my lower back, thinking it might be just be from the train itself I ignored it at first, but it was only on my left side so I without thinking I reached out behind me and felt something which I can only describe as *crispy* and I jumped out of my seat and turned around to see a f****** cicada! Surprisingly it didn’t start screeching! I don’t know how I missed it when I sat down but there was a curve in the seat back and I think it was hiding there at first. They are *everywhere* 😖 You're so brave to have put up with that stairwell for 3 summers!
Moving in Japan is rough, moving in Japan as a foreigner, even with a sponsor, is even worse. Xenophobia is a big issue when looking for places to rent/live. Yes, not just Japan obviously, but since it is a video about Japan, it needs to be mentioned because too many have a too good view on that country. To be fair, a lot of things seem to be better, as a tourist, living as a foreigner there is so different.
@@jilllangman9343It's mainly down to the fact that landlords would prefer Japanese residents as they deem them 'more permanent' than your average foreigners who might just decide to go back home in a year or two (even though this isn't necessarily the case, but an unfortunate generalisation). It's a bit harder for a Japanese person to do that. Chris Broad covered this in good detail.
Babe wake up, a new apartment searching vlog from Emma just dropped!! In all seriousness, I'm super hyped for your next apartment and all the upcoming videos documenting the move. I've been regularly rewatching your moving vlogs from 3 years ago to motivate myself during the hunt for a longterm place in Berlin. Thank you for coming back to YT! ❤️
I hope you thrive as well as expected in your new place! Glad you got moved in before your Australia trip and then got to properly relax 😊. Also I remember how stressed out you were at the thought of having to move out of your old apartment after the original two-year lease - kind of nice that you got to move out on your own terms! Good luck with the space organization!
Congrats on the apartment!!! I am excited for you! Also, I didn't realize how much I missed your videos until now. The animated dancing cicadas, the on-screen text, the humor... they're just so fun (even with the grody actual cicadas lol). Oh and I absolutely love your hair! You always look so lovely but your hairstyle is super cute! Thank you for blessing all of us with an Emma video!! ❤❤❤❤❤
4:30 you describing your commute and then being so tired looking at going up the stairs just really made a lot of “end of day” scenes in anime make more sense. Especially ones where people go back to danchi!
This makes me happy I own my home & never have to move again! But I do love the excitement and fun that comes with starting in a new place, especially when you're moving closer to the people, places & things you love 😊 Glad you followed your gut and found somewhere you really want and got it 🎉🎉🎉 Sending lots of positive vibes so everything goes smoothly from now on ❤ Looking forward to seeing Tokyo myself in a couple weeks and your videos have been invaluable in planning, esp your disabled in Tokyo one - so thank you ❤❤❤
so happy for you that u got the apartment you wanted, here's to new beginnings 🍻 . Will be fun furnishing the new place, can't wait for the next video! Enjoy your time back in Australia :)
I can't believe you're moving again, I'm so excited to see your new place!!! I've been watching you since your 8^meter apartment, and it's been so fun to be able to be on this journey with you!
Always a delight to see you reemerge on YT! And with moving news, no less! Thanks for showing us the insides of some interesting places, I always love imagining what I would do with a space. Good luck with the move! Looking forward to seeing how you use this new layout.
Congrats again for the new appartment! and wow, the terror of the cicadas in the staircase was really something! lol, seeing it now I understand your hate for them! Wishing you so many good things in your new place! yippee!
So excited for you! Glad you got the apartment you wanted!! Thank you for sharing your process and costs and such. It’s crazy how expensive housing is in both Japan and the USA
lol the way I saw this and went again!? While at the same time was like I do like these videos because it’s so fun seeing different apartments in japan. 😂
Congrats on your new apt! I remember when you had your first place and could touch both walls just by reaching your arms out wide! It's been so cool to see how much you've grown and to see your confidence grow as well! Can't wait to see your new place once you're settled!
Thank you for sharing your moving ordeal with us. I lived in Okinawa for five years ending in the 90s, and your story brought back many memories of what I had to go through as well.
Congrats Emma. If you are able to make your life better then you should. Everyone deserves to be happy. I sincerely hope it all works out well for you.
Emma! The past year, I've moved 3 times. Finally in a place that's stable with my partner in a location (city) that I absolutely love. I've been here a month and I'm so, so happy. Best of luck organizing and making the new place home! Also, what's really wild is I remember you moving to the place you moved out of, and when you said it had been three years, I actually gasped.
I feel for you - just completed my search here in Melbourne, Australia, after 21....houses.....I found one within 600mm of my current place. I have always wondered why Japanese apartments have those Glazed/opaque glass in every room. So nice to actually see OUT of a window.
I've grown nostalgic for a long commute. Living at home, my commute to the centre of Melbourne was just on an hour and to get to work required changing modes. My current one I could probably walk to work in an hour and the commute is about 15 minutes. I used to always get a seat on the long commute though and I got so many things done on it that you just can't do in that short amount of time. Hope moving went well!
I didn't expect a 30min video about apartment hunting to be so interesting and uplifting. Emma strikes again. Last place ("the one") looked the best even without knowing it had the best location. I think Emma struck gold with this one. Second to last seemed really nice, layout seemed decent enough (IMO), and then she showed the view outside the window, can't imagine living like that 😅
Lovely to see you again, Emma! Your videos got me through a rough time a few years ago, so the nostalgia of watching you apartment hunt once again got me right in the feels. So happy and proud for you. 🎉
I'm so happ you got it! Yay! Enjoy the process of setting it all up. Funny how you post this the day I read a manga with someone looking for an apartment in Japan lol.
Yay, Emma!!! So glad you got the new gem of a place. I think it's fair to say you've earned it after so many years of trains, stairs, and other miseries. Good luck with the move!
I'm also in the process of apartment hunting and preparing for the move. I had a viewing last week and I did not sleep all week!!! It's so stressful but also exciting!
I lived in a 4th floor walk-up for 19 years. It gets very old. Recently moved to the 2/3 floor (built into a hill so 2nd floor on one side, 3rd on the other) but with an elevator!! It is a game changer.
The cicadas! I've rewatched that part so many times, so hilarious! It's so true, they panic at the last second and go busting in all directions, so unpredictable!
I'm glad you waited to find exactly what you were looking for! and don't feel bad for paying a little extra to get those amenities. its better for your mental health anyway. overall rent just sucks everywhere. we pay 4500 a month for a townhouse in california but it's worth it for us because its exactly where we wanted to be and its a short commute for my husband for work.
Hi Emma hope your move has happened and are now enjoying all the decorating decisions for your new home. Looking forward to an update when you have time that is, best wishes Samantha
Yay!! So happy for you! ❤🎉 I hope you are done with all of the stress of moving into a new apartment 😅 it is so awesome you are finally in the city 🌆 ❤
🌿 So excited for you! Love the move in decorating part. Can't wait to see what you do with it. If you feel discouraged with the enormity of it all, you could frame a sample of the faux brick wallpaper & to remind you why you love this one... LOL. It's your sanctuary ! Congrats.
Congrats on the find! A while back i had a job that required 3 bus rides for a total of 2-2.5 hrs of commuting one way. I recall just passing out on my way home and opening my eyes and realizing i slept for an hour and i still had a way to go. Now i WFH but i travel for work once every few months. Its not so bad amd its nice to have a change of pace but generally i think I'd have a hard time commuting like i did before. I just have so much more time to go outside and exercise instead of being stuck in a car or bus.
Congrats! Hope you and your plants thrive in the new space. I like hearing the prices, it makes daydreaming of moving possible, lol Here in Florida I pay $2100 for a 2bedroom/2bathroom house with a large kitchen, dining room, long back porch and two car garage. I wonder if our humidity compares as it gets swimmingly hot here, too! Look forward to your next video!
I don't personally relate to the long commute part, but GIRL I STILL GET IT. Rooting for you to get this new apartment and get some of your time back!!!
It's so interesting to discover how similar things are around the world even though we are many time-zones apart. I live in Germany in a very lovely, very cheap apartment in a block built in the late 50s/early 60s too, which is owned by a housing cooperative. The houses are not that nice to look at, but the apartments are, plus all my windows look over a pretty green space as well, with massive old trees and shrubs. It's so quiet an lovely and I only need 10 minutes by bike into the inner city. I totally get how you love the space itself but want to go for a shorter commute.
I love seeing videos like this in Japan from a variety of content creators. It gives me realistic expectations of what to expect if I ever want to move to Japan from the U.K. I'm currently looking to move abroad, but I'm narrowing down which countries I want to apply a working visa for 😁
Fuck yeah, proud of you. Rent pricing is pretty crazy everywhere(Living in Melbourne so I get chu) and for you to find a dream place with very little compromise is worth the extra money if you can budget for it. Anyone that gives you slack can suck eggs, this is something YOU value and it's not just your home, it's also a workplace for you. It looks stunning so far, can't wait to see bits and pieces through the next videos.
Hey Emma, I saw you yesterday sitting on a bench with a friend in Azabu-juban. It was surreal to see your face in person. Didn't want to bother you, but wanted to say Hi! HI!
YES kill that commute. I had a 45 min bus ride for a while and moved home so I could have a 15 minute bus ride bc I hated it so much. Then I switched that for a 15 minute walk. Which is great! Until it's June-August and 30°C+ with 80% humidity. I also wouldn't blame you about the steps. I only have one level to climb and it still annoys me.
The cicada video was hilarious 😂 I feel u!!! I have the same but with grasshoppers, which my village is fuuuull of them, huge ones and everywhere! Also… congrats!!!! ❤
Nice to see a new post! Apartment hunting on Tokyo must be stressful and frustrating- like moving in general. Glad to see you got the place you wanted ✨️
Congratulations on the new apartment!!!!! I'm excited for the next video!!!! I love your editing and humor~♡♡♡ The cicada part was super funny!!!! (Though I sympathize, I also wouldn't want that large of a bug flying at me.)
Glad you found a place that works. That's so hard in ANY city, let alone one where the language isn't your first language and you are a foreigner. May you have a happy long stay in your new place.
I miss my old apartment in Toyonaka, a suburb of Osaka. I was on the 2nd floor of a two-story building. Manshon was in the name of the building, but I think it was more like the Apaato you described. I never really knew the difference till you explained it. The part of my neighbor's house outside my balcony was only one-story, so it overlooked their roof and I could see the whole neighborhood. On the other side, the windows overlooked the neighbor's garden, so the view on both sides was pleasant. We had two bedrooms, a DK, and a separate living room. The bedrooms and living room had tatami floors. I really liked those. I had some fresh tatami installed while I was living there and really loved the smell! We only paid ¥80,000 + utilities, so I think around ¥100,000 per month and I think the maintenance fee must have just been included in the rent, if there was one. I was initially on the ground floor when a 2nd floor apartment became vacant, which got better sunlight and had a nice view (really made a difference!), I was able to move without having to pay any additional moving fees or key money, etc. The landlord was thankfully foreigner friendly. I think I timed the walk to the station at about 12 minutes.
So glad you were able to get the new place! Heck yeah being close to social life and way less time commuting and less stairs and ✨24 hour trash!✨ Your old place was lovely and all but omg the cicada stairwell..................... 😱 Like logically I know that cicadas are harmless but holy crap being in a narrow space where some giant chaotic lurching noisy bug will suddenly fly around is so very nope. The cicada stress reduction alone is a definite life improvement lol!
Raise your hand if you're here since the tiny apartment :) Go Emma! You can do it!
🙋🏻♀️
haha yessss ! With ther pantry in the ground ! It was cute tho, I miss the vibes from that place !
my hand is very high up :D
Lol!
They say there's a direct correlation between "happiness" and commute time - bike riders are apparently often the "happiest!"
The cicada horror part had me almost crying with laughter
If it's bad, then that's a sign you wont see that amount again for probably 11+ years due to their lifecycle. :-)

That is soooooooo me!!!!!!!!🤣😂😂😂🤣🤣
All the oh fk and no no I was wheezing 😂😂😂😂😂😂

The cicadas! I've rewatched that part so many times, so hilarious! It's so true, they panic at the last second and go busting in all directions, so unpredictable!
I hope your moving goes well! I've been watching your videos for several years, and it's fun to see how things are changing with you 💝👍
It feels like only yesterday that you moved into that place. Time flies!
From your micro-mini-apartment to where you're headed next, you've come a long way, Emma. Kudos !
How exciting for you! I'm happy you found a great place. Good luck with everything - the move, and the trip home!
Congrats! I love how you explain the process for those of us who are clueless as to how it all works there. It's very interesting!
I always have and always will enjoy your content and thank you so much for taking us along in your journey Emma. Good luck, you got this!!
The queen of apartments is back!
I love seeing videos like this in Japan from a variety of content creators. It gives me realistic expectations of what to expect if I ever want to move to Japan from the U.K. I'm currently looking to move abroad, but I'm narrowing down which countries I want to apply a working visa for 😁
Emma, I’m so happy you’re making positive changes to your lifestyle! We all know how does little annoying things add up at the end of the day!
It looks stunning so far, can't wait to see bits and pieces through the next videos.
woah, seeing the old Emma in the door way part made me realise how long i have been watching this channel. Wishing all the best for you!
I can't believe you have been there for three years already! I'm so excited for you! Good luck with your move! ❤❤❤
Hey Emma, I saw you yesterday sitting on a bench with a friend in Azabu-juban. It was surreal to see your face in person. Didn't want to bother you, but wanted to say Hi! HI!
Censor of the dogs always makes me laugh 😂 Great video Emma and congrats again on the new apartment!
ITS BEEN 3 YEARS ALREADY??? Holy hell time moves fast
I can’t wait to see the new apartment!!
Congrats on your new apartment! I'm super excited for you!
Good luck with the new apartment!!
I really hope you get this new apartment. I'm excited for you. Can't wait fur your next video 😊
Glad you found a place that works. That's so hard in ANY city, let alone one where the language isn't your first language and you are a foreigner. May you have a happy long stay in your new place.
I've been watching you for years and years, and you're moving again! Good luck girl 🎉
Congratulations on the new apartment! 🎉
Best of luck to you Emma in your new place! So exciting! 🎉
Good luck with all this Emma!!
Lots of helpful renting tips in this video, thanks! Glad you got the apartment you wanted 😊🎉
Yays!! Congrats on getting the place! Now for the crazy part. Good luck on the move.
Good job gurl! Sometimes a change of location and stepping out is a good thing! Best of luck!
So good to see you again! Love this video!
