Such a great review, I was thinking of buying the 28=75mm however, I do want something more wide angle and after watching this, I think I might get the 17-28mm before the 28-75mm! Again THANK YOU for the comprehensive review
Absolutely my pleasure Duy and thanks for watching the review! If your funds allow I would def recommend having both as you then you have such a wide coverage of focal lengths but if not then either of them will be a great value buy.
No worries Ali, glad I can help. I guess with it being a lens made primarily for photographers that reviews mainly focus on that but it's a really great lens for those small group of videographers that use auto focus 👍
Good review mate! I’m also lucky enough to have my hands on the lens and absolutely love it for weddings/gimbal work - the crop mode on the a7iii also allows a more “normal” field of view as well which I think is handy. Agree with all the points you made!
Hi Simon, thanks so much mate. Yeh I forgot to mention that with crop mode you're actually getting 17- 42mm 2.8 which is really fantastic and yesterday while filming the first dance I was able to get some wide sweeping shots mixed in with a few tighter shots of it and I think I prefer it to using the 28-75mm.
Really nice video, thanks a lot. To give some input for you to improve even more - I would have loved some different camera angles. But that's complaining on a high level, keep it up.
I agree with all you say is important in a lens, especially the weight. You do the best when it comes to selling this lens. Yes, it does not have much range and I am not excited about the next focal length Tamron (28-75?), because I think the internal focus is important and would want the lens as short as possible. Thanks!
Thanks for the review. Coming from the 28-75 I'll definitely be getting this one! It looks like you have a successful video production company in the UK, would you give us some tips on how to get started selling video?
Thanks Lucas, yeh definitely worth it to get this lens, it's great value for money. Yes I managed to make a living for shooting video here in the UK and I do a lot of freelancer work for weddings and corporates and less of my own production company these days. I should write down some tips on selling video production services and present them in a video on here one day. Thanks for the idea and thanks for watching the review
awesome review - I subscribed! One question, I emulated a James Matthews video similar to your smoothie video but I used the Sony 12-24 which I rented and is just too expensive. My question is when you shot that smoothie video, did you use a gimbal for those shots or was it handheld?
Thanks again Jo. No it was all handheld at 100fps and then speed ramped where I thought I would need to. Shooting at 100fps allows you to do your movements quickly which allows you to get smoother handheld shots than if you were shooting in 25p but slowly as that would be very jittery footage. I think because I was mainly just shifting my body weight for the movements rather than walking there was no need for a gimbal. Also if you use a wide lens then the small movements with your body going back and forward seem like much bigger movements. Thanks for subbing!
Absolutely great review - just want to know, these are the two main lenses you use most of the time? Also, what lighting setup have you got for your talking-head segments? It's so crispy!
Hi Danyal! Thanks very much for watching! Yes atm these are the two lenses I use with my A73 95% of the time with the other lens being a sigma art 35mm 1.4 every now and again. I think they both give me everything I need and take up minimal space in the bag. The lighting setup is a 120d mark 1 with the aperture space light attachment and a little cheap yongnuo LED light to provide a bit of an edge light. I have another video about it on my channel called basic lighting tutorial. Thanks for noticing the lighting setup mate :)
Nice review! Got this lens coming in the next week or so. I'm really curious how I'll feel about the focus by wire. I've used lenses across the board (Rokinon, Sigma, and Panasonic) so I'm used to everything from really nice manual focus to so so manual focus to pretty bad manual focus, so we'll see. I do use autofocus very often on my A7iii and FX9 these days though. It just works so well that in most shooting scenarios I trust it more than myself. Especially shooting events or fast action. I think that'll be a worthwhile tradeoff for the lighter lenses. I end up grabbing my GH5 a lot with the Sigma 18-35 and Panasonic 35-100 because I don't have time to mess with switching primes in real world situations.
Thanks Brian mate. Yeh the focus by wire is definitely something that can be worked with but the regular mechanical focus ring is so much better. I use autofocus pretty much all the time for run and gun with it but if i'm on a tripod manual focus works well and don't forget you can also tap to focus on the lcd screen and lock it that way rather than using the ring itself. And yeh i'm the same I only own one prime lens and barely use it. Zooms all the way for me especially when the are fixed aperture zooms that can go to 2.8.
Definitely 28-75 mate. It's my most used lens, 17-28 is a nice addition for when you need some wide establishers or wide timelapses but if I could only have one it would without doubt by the 28-75 as it is much more versatile.
I was curious, while you were filming this video how far away were you from the camera? Seems like you were arms distance. The reason why I'm asking is I"m going to be doing videos and I'm debating on either getting the Tamron 17-28mm or the Sigma 14-24mm Art Lens. Let me know what you can please. Thank you.
Hey mate. Yes I was about an arm's distance away, possibly a bit more. Personally I'd choose the 17-28 tamron as I love how lightweight it is compared to the sigma but that's just what I need personally. If you're not bothered about weight then sigma is a great choice too

@@pavguliani Oh okay, now I get it. So that 17-70mm is not the same width and depth as would be for the 17-28mm lens. I get it. Honestly I can't hear anything in terms of auto focus noise. I think this is possibly because it's lowest aputure is only 2.8 on a wide lens so the auto focus is never working that hard compared to a 50mm at 1.4 for example but yeh the short answer is the autofocus works to the standard of a native Sony lens without any noise 👍
Great video I’m torn between both Tamrons! Quick question, do you have to keep changing the steady shot settings every time you change the focal length on the lens? Sorry if this sounds like a silly question I’m still learning.🙏🏽
Thanks Cleva! Yeh both awesome lenses and look out for the new 17-70mm 2.8 from tamron which will be a hybrid of both of these lenses. No if you have your steadyahot settings set to auto then it will do it in camera everytime you change focal lengths. Only time it won't work is if you are using lenses on the camera with an adapter, that's when you'll need to set the steadyshot manually
@@pavguliani WHAT! They are coming out with a 17-70? Wow! Do you know when? Hope the price is good but if it is, they won't be able to sell these other two, so...expect over 1000, USD. Thanks!

Yeh for me it's a great all round wide option. 17mm at 2.8 and light weight but then again I do video so for photography, depending on the type of photography you do you could be better off getting a prime with a lower aperture
Hey Pat, I had another question, if I were to use my A7C with a Delgato Cam Link, could I use an HDMI to USB-C cable to connect the A7C to my Mac and it still work where I could do live recordings? If not, please let know what type of cable I should use. Thank you.
Thanks Irfan! Hmmm tbh I think if you have an apsc sony as your main camera I would look a the apsc lenses on offer as they will be cheaper whilst still giving you what you need. Unless you plan to upgrade to a full frame sony soon then I don't see any reason why you should get this lens as it will also be a 26-42mm crop equivalent on your a6400.
Great review mate, Please mate which one would you recommend for a first lense between tamron 17-20 and the 28-70 mm for a Sony a7iii, I recently moved from canon to sony and looking to get my next lense from the kit lense cheers
Thanks a lot bro! Yes if I was you I'd get the 28-75mm first as it's more versatile for different types of videography unless you predominantly need a wide angle lens because u mainly do real estate of landscape stuff but otherwise 28-75 would be more useful. Then when you can look to add a wide lens to your kit like the 17-28 or similar. Hope that helps
Thanks. I primarily intend to do cityscape/vlog videos, for that would you recommend the flexibility of 17-28 with f2.8 or 20mm but with f1.8. I bought a Sony A7lll with a Tamron28-75.. Your advise would be highly appreciated.
Yeh I think I would recommend the 17-28 over the 20mm as it's good to have the versatility of zoom and for cityscapes I don't see the wider apperture of 1.8 being that much of a big deal.
Pav Guliani thanks for your advise. Will do the same.. I am happy with my Tamron lens and your review gave me reasonable confidence to go for this one too.
Thanks Alex! Yes I don't have a clue when it comes to photography so just giving my 2 cents when it comes to video. Well done on doing your review bro and make sure you share as much as possible 👍
Well what do you know....I look up some videos for a good wide angle lens for the new Sony and look who's video is at the top of the list...haha loved the review my dude! Seriously considering the Tamron now🙌
🤣🤣. Awesome bro! I'm so happy you're on the Sony team and have your micro 4 loser on the substitutes bench 🤣. This lens is sick though, my second most used after the Tammy 28-75 and I'll be adding the 70-180 Tammy soon enough I think so I'll be full on Tamron. Great value for money lenses although as I mentioned in the review the manual focusing will take a bit of getting used to 👍
@@pavguliani lol as am I dude 🤙🏼 I feel like I’ll be seeing a lot more of your videos now. I’ve heard good things about Tamron from a price and quality standpoint so I’ll probably jump on their wide angle once the funds come in. You are full on Tamron! Haha. Do you find that the 28-75 is a bit of a pain to balance on the gimbal?
Do you mean because it doesn't zoom internally? I've never had an issue with it as I just always balance at 50mm and because it's so light weight of you go to either end at 28 or 75 the motors in any regular gimbal like a zhiyun crane 2 or weebill-s are not stretched at all. I'm usually rocking a small rig cage as well with my a7iii and have no issues. Btw is it the a7s3 you have?
Haha awesome man big congratulations, take care of that little baby as if it was an actual little baby 😂. I would have definitely jumped innit if it wasn't such a rubbish year financially and $4000 would have been a big hit but next year fingers crossed🤞🤞🤞. Take care dude
thnks for the review man ... that was pretty awesome. just one question: do you keep the SteadyShot-on while using this lens on a glidecam like the ronin s ?
Thanks so much man. Yeh at the moment I do keep the steady shot on while using the lens but I have heard somewhere that if you ever do work on telephoto lenses on gimbal or gidecam to turn steady shot off. By telephoto I think it means 50mm and above. But for the wide lenses it won't make a difference having steady shot on or off I believe
Hi Pav! Where do you live in london? i would love to try tamron on my a7riv before i buy it, as i heard it had some problem with this body and autofocus. I live in near heathrow , i would appreciate your help :)
Hi just wondering about autofocus noise when using camera's onboard mic. Also, can you use this lens in crop mode and clear image zoom on the a7 iii? thanks.
No it's very silent, I never hear anything with my 17-28. Yes can use in crop mode and it will be a 26-42 lens and also yes works with clear image zoom. Hope that helps
@@pavguliani I also just bought it. I am sorry I should have bought it through your link as I suspect you might get a bit of a kick back, but I wasn't ready to buy until now and forgot. Next time for sure.
I have not used the sigma art 14-28 yet so I could not give you a concrete answer but if you like to manual focus for video and you need to go a bit wider than 17 on occasions then I guess the sigma will be your best bet otherwise the light weight and portable nature of the 17-28 tamron would be my choice especially if you are mainly using auto focus in video.
I own the sigma 24-70 f2.8 ..great lense ... I was thinking of getting the sigma 14-28 f2.8 and the hurdle for me is that its a fish eye lense and you cannot put your nd filter or any protective filter at the front ...so here I am debating between 17-28 f2.8 tamron, or zeiss 16-35 f4 or sell a kidney for the 16-36 f2.8 gm 🤣

ok, thanks. I really use manual focus, the most, like all in film videowork etc. I mean what you really mena with tehe manual focuse it will get jumpy you mean: i have the osny 24-105, and a tamron 35, f.1.8 I those lenses is great fro me to amnueal frocuse, why it this lens diffeent ?
No worries. If you're ok with 24-105 and tamron 35 manual focusing then the 17-28 will also be ok for you as they are all focus by wire. I can from using canon lenses to manual focus and they are not focus by wire that's why it was not easy for me to get used to focus by wire manual focusing 👍
@@pavguliani ahhhhh. You jsust seem to skip over som eimprtant things. Did you use this lense really a lot , at all ? I mean the manual focusing, some say, is problamatic, coz,it does not smoothly transist, its jumpy, that is what manual focuseing is about .

Hey Pat, I had another question, if I were to use my A7C with a Delgato Cam Link, could I use an HDMI to USB-C cable to connect the A7C to my Mac and it still work where I could do live recordings? If not, please let know what type of cable I should use. Thank you.
Hi mate absolutely no idea on this question as I've never done live streaming 😂😅 sorry
@@pavguliani No pressure, thanks. By the way for the video that you did (sitting at your desk), what settings did you use? Just curious. Thanks again!
Very good review and amazing work. I have sony a6400 (18-135), Do you recommend me this lens for me? or something else better ?
Thanks Irfan! Hmmm tbh I think if you have an apsc sony as your main camera I would look a the apsc lenses on offer as they will be cheaper whilst still giving you what you need. Unless you plan to upgrade to a full frame sony soon then I don't see any reason why you should get this lens as it will also be a 26-42mm crop equivalent on your a6400.
Thank You so much.
No problems thanks for watching
Great video!? Thanks
Thanks a lot Alex 😊
Thx Bro
Hey, awesome review! I just posted a review of this lens for photo work and it was really interesting to see your perspective for videos. Keep it up!
@@pavguliani Ah okay. I was just curious. I don’t have the 28-75, but I was looking into it. Ya my dude! Such a beaute 🔥
Hi Pav!
Where do you live in london?
i would love to try tamron on my a7riv before i buy it,
as i heard it had some problem with this body and autofocus.
I live in near heathrow , i would appreciate your help :)
Hi, Love your video but can you please let me know how do you get nice colors on Sony camera?
thanks a lot mate. Yes I have a video on my channel about how I colour grade my song footage and also my pp so go and check that 👍
Great review!
Thanks for the support Michael!
Is this lense has as similar image quality as 28-75 Tam ?
Yeh absolutely they're both on the same level in terms of quality. Absolutely lovely lenses 👍
@@pavguliani Appreciate the info. great vid!
Ma sha Allah. Good review
Thanks jack ☺️
Thanks for the video Pav !! in a few days, i will get my Fuji X-T3 :-)
Oh awesome Alain, you will love that camera. I'm excited for you bro! 👍
Because of this video i subscribed. Well done.
Awesome Andy you legend! thanks very much
@@pavguliani I also just bought it. I am sorry I should have bought it through your link as I suspect you might get a bit of a kick back, but I wasn't ready to buy until now and forgot. Next time for sure.
@@andyarts8382 Ahh yeh that would have been sweet but no worries anyway. Enjoy your awesome new lens Andy mate!
tamron 17-28 f2.8 and sigma art 14-28 f2.8
whichone good for video .
Any flikerring on the 28 mm with sony a7 iii ?
Not that I have noticed, what exactly do you mean by flickering?
Love this review brtoher. Keep it up!! Whats your ig?
nvm found it
Thanks mate! And thanks for watching the review 👍😊
Great Work !
Thanks Chris!
Great review 10/10

Ahhh bro that's a comment that's made my day! Thanks Josh, I'll hopefully put out some more videos on this platform once I get through some of my editing back log. Best of luck to you as well 🤙🏽
Спасибо за субтитры
great review! might want to talk a bit slower and enunciate more though
Thanks very much for watching and thanks for the feedback, i'll be sure to talk slower in the future. Apologies if there was anything I said that you didn't understand.
@@orangerecords_studio yes I've used it for more than 3 years now. It's great 👍
