Fun fact: while I was studying for my folklore studies degree back in 2008, I came across a very detailed research paper in the archive that was all about Barney hate and how it influenced children's folklore.
I swear I'm not making this up.
The paper's theory about why Barney got so much hate compared to similar shows was that Barney came across as so insincere that no one old enough to have developed an ounce of cynicism could tolerate the character.
I didn't develop my cynicism til about 8 when my brother died, even then Barney was one of the few childhood icons that kept me from becoming truly cripplingly depressed.

Well isn't that something lol. I loved Barney when I was little and ended up being more of a 'Expect the worst, hope for the best' kind of person
I can easily believe that. As a little kid, I wasn't obsessed with Barney, but I didn't mind him. Now that I'm a teenager, I have nothing but distaste for the character and how he talks down to little kids.
The day Doug reviews Caillou will be both a day of achievement, and a day of mourning.
He should make a movie based around that, like how James did with ET. Or better year, a video game so AVGN would have to review it

I used to write these fucked up stories when I was in high school. One of them was about Barney getting busted for embezzling the show's funds and tax evasion. Now I see that I was on to something.
The thing with Edward and Spongebob is that while their general mood is happy-go-lucky, we know they’re more than capable to express a range of emotions in the appropriate circumstances.
Yeah there were PLENTY of episodes where SpongeBob lost his temper getting sick of Squidward being lazy, became depressed when he realizes his negligence to Gary led him to run away, or was afraid when he procrastinated to do his homework and was almost out of time.

One dream I had was a blameitonjorge video called “Kids shows and the trouble they’ve gotten into” and it was about kid show controversies. One of them was about Caillou’s whining and, similar to this video, blameitonjorge compared Caillou to characters who actually taught emotions like Mr Rogers (Assassination) and Big Bird (Mr Hooper’s death)

Mr. Rogers knew exactly how to connect to those watching his show while Sesame Street never shied away from those topics. I'm...actually surprised at the amount of Barney hate, but then again, I really did grow up with him. After a while I remember growing a bit of a dislike, but even up till now, I remember him as a...sort of annoying old friend.
But hold up, you wanna talk about Barney being CREEPY? Just look up that recently posted Barney documentary and check his "Backyard Gang" persona. That shit gave me nightmares as a child, which would explain why I'm so OK with his "modern" look.

Heck, Henrietta Pussycat had issues with self-esteem. She was insecure. King Friday the Thirteenth was a bit of an egomaniac. Lady Elaine Fairchild called everyone Toots. I had to wonder if she was some relation of Bobby Heenan that he never spoke of. 😂

@@IcyDiamond I don’t think it’s a reboot as much as a more in-depth look at the Neighborhood of make believe. Although the show is decent in it’s on right it just doesn’t seem to have any charm. It’s a decent show for kids that teaches good lessons but I think that anybody want to watch it should start with Mr. Rogers neighborhood before Watching Daniel Tigers neighborhood

owenpeterson at the very least they have to be able to properly emote. Even the muppets can convey various emotions from a wide spectrum.

@@IcyDiamond Ok, well somebody could write a fanfic where Barney gets sucked into a portal to Equestria where he gets to face off with a dangerous enemy for the first time, and he gets to help everypony out and bond with them, but part of the conflict is that most of the mane six find it odd he's always happy, even Pinkie Pie finds it odd, towards the end when the mane six is scared and hopeless Barney steps in and encourages them to be brave and save the day and they realize about Barney is although hes not sad or anything he shows concern by cheering people up and helping out

I remember there was an episode of Barney where all the kids get a letter of the alphabet and have to find an animal who’s name starts with that letter. Baby bop or whatever her name is got the letter U and grabbed a toy unicorn and Barney said “Unicorns aren’t real!” And 6 year old me just stared at the screen with my jaw dropped in horror.
Now that I think about it, a purple dinosaur told a toddler green dinosaur that unicorns weren’t real. Trippy.
You know, does it really matter whether unicorns are real or not? It's still an animal that starts with the letter U. I can't think of many real animals that start with that letter.

Because he was drawn. Because he was a cartoon then. Cartoons can get away with this, realistic depictions though make it a bit creepy because they show the disturbing flaws in the design. That’s why people hate the movie version of Sonic so much.

I was obsessed with Barney as a little kid. I learned how to tell time because Barney was always on at 4:30pm and all the clocks in the house were analog so I had to learn to know when to start bugging my mom to turn on the TV.
Fun story, right?
Well, I'm no internet critic or game theorizer, but I'll give this a try.
The two girls summoned barney with the power of there imagination which made it impossible for the boy to imagine barney away for two reasons.
Reason one, it was two girls vs one boy.
Logic and reason never meant much to there kind anyway.
Reason two, once the boy saw barney it became impossible for him two deny barney existed.
After a whole day barney grew so strong that his dinosaur friends were able to manifest one after the other, only growing stronger as he draws more kids into his crazy.
Much like Freddy Kruger can't exist if people forget about him, barney grows stronger the more crazy adventures he makes up with random kids.
Ironically while Kruger goes after teens, Barney targets actual kids for the same reasons.
Of course that's just a theory, A COW THEORY. thanks for reading...

Maybe it could’ve worked. This movie (and the rest of the show as well) would be a little less irritating if it was animated.
IKR? In the late 90s, the Barney characters had this 2D redesign which made them look like they came from Nelvana shows(Little Bear, Franklin, Berenstain Bears, etc.). These designs were animated, to an extent, for Microsoft Actimates PC games, and though there aren’t much in betweens, the characters still have that solidity and fluidity as a show from that era.

On that note, I have a funny story that involved my mom and a Barney costume.
My mom was asked by her best friend to dress up as Barney for her son's birthday. For some reason, a relative (of the friend) was supposed to dress up and they thought she couldn't make it. So the day of the party, my mom is out entertaining the kids when a bunch of people started pinching my mom's ass. When the relative showed up, the guests were confused as how she was not in the costume and they were horrified when they found out who was in the suit.
That's a funny story however I don't get it I thought your Mom was supposed to be in the costume why did they think that another relative was supposed to be there?

@@andreasmeelie1889 well, maybe I should have stated from the get-go that my mom's friend (let's call her Alicia) and her friend (Blanca) decided that Blanca was gonna dress up as Barney for Alicia's son. Well, Blanca decided not to and Alicia asked my mom last minute and she said yes.
Nobody got the memo that there was a switch up last minute until they saw Blanca attend the party as a guest and they put 2 and 2 together. Which is why they were mortified when they found out it was my mom's booty they were feeling up...

I was born in May of 94', so when this came out, I was just moving past my Barney phase. I remember having a slight desire to see it, but was too embarrassed because "Barney was for babies".
Barney is a special childhood memory but unlike other kids shows from my childhood I can’t go back and watch it, this was a good revisit though

I remember back in 2nd grade, we used to sing songs about shooting Barney with a rocket launcher to the tune of “I Love You”. *That’s saying a LOT, that by the time we’re in 2nd grade we already absolutely despise Barney.*
I was the target audience age for the show, and whenever Barney came on screen, I was just shy of running from the room screaming. I was terrified of him. Even at the age the show was intended for I hated the character.

Dragon tales was awesome! And I learned a lot from that show I only learned the I love u song from Barney, so far its failed me when picking up chicks.
That was one of the major complaints with Barney; how it was mindless singing &.dancing with no educational value.
