I don't understand Welsh. I'm English. But this I can tell you has beys tough month or so. 2 lynchpins of the most brilliant backline to ever take the rugby field gone.. They bestowed on me my most vivid memories, not just in rugby, but in sport. They're utter brilliance will always live with me. And I'm a proud Englishman
As an englishman who has a welsh nephew and niece and i tried to learn the welsh language. I got a book from my library. Its beautiful to hear my welsh rugby heros speaking about the game in their own language. I understand a little..an englishman. Dioch xx
Thanks you for those comments about New Zealand at the end Gerald Davies. The 1971 Lions had an enormous effect on New Zealand rugby; they changed it for the better in so many ways. Barry John will always be the King here in NZ. It's also a pity we could never lure Carwyn James out here to live and coach; that would have been quite amazing.
Great stuff! I wanted to see, but it don't show, Barry John's try against NZ Universities which, for me, encapsulates all his genius - a dummy drop goal, acceleration and simply drifting and swerving by numerous defenders seemingly unable to lay a hand on him, even though he was in touching distance. RIP.
@@goedwards Yes - I remember that comment too. In a similar vein, I met a guy at work who played in the centre for Cardiff a few times with BJ inside him, and in describing John selling a dummy, said something along the lines of "I could see him pass it to me, I believed it was in my hands, I could swear I could feel the leather and the seam, but he still had the ball and was gone!". Now THAT is selling a dummy!
I heard about that moment in the match. Imagine to decide to dummy something in an instant and do something else. When the pressure is on? Drop goal or anything..genius
They got stuffed in the second test. A backlash. Carwyn felt that the British and Irish lions had not played well in the second test and could play much better. Conversly he felt the all blacks had played as well as they could and wouldn't play better. And so it proved. Sorry for my Welsh. Englishman here. Welsh sister in law and Welsh nephew and niece. JPR fan. Tried to learn the language. Dioch xx .
Come on@@steffanhoffmann everybody knows the are either the British and Irish Lions or just The Lions. The only people still calling them The British Lions are either ignorant or purposely doing it to piss off Irish people. So which is it?

I think carwyn Barry John and Gerald Davies will always be very respectfully held in new Zealand. Mike Gibson Jpr John Bevan and David duckham too
This was the greatest lions tour. In 1974 the south africans were all over the place...1971 the best for me. Bevan. Duckham. Davies.
The language of my parents; I hope it is never lost. As for this era of rugby, simply wonderful!
These men were not only great players but eloquent in two languages.
Thanks so much for uploading ,brought back so many wonderful memories....diolch yn fawr
Marvelous! Many thanks!
Absolute must watch..nice one Bob.
I enjoyed that.... thank you Bob.
We've sadly lost even more of that splendid team since this was recorded. Let's enjoy and admire the ones we have left.
Absolutely superb 👍
Awesome! Eventhough I don't understand anything it is a real treat to here them speak Welsh.
Love it.
It's the first time in 53? years I'd heard that King John had taken the whole two weeks to be persuaded to tour.
Fantastic. Great to see our boys speaking our native tongue. ❤

Yes, Alex Matheson, one of the NZ Universities loosies who tried to tackle him said "Barry John just rolled his eyes at me and I fell over".

The British and Irish Lions actually!
Not in 1971.
They changed it to the current version in 2001.
and Willie John was born in N Ireland but played for Rep of Ireland???
