Pod Stallions: Doctor Who at 60

  • We at Pod Stallions are not ones to dwell on the passage of time (and let's face it, no one wants that shock to the system), but it IS hard to believe that it's now been 60 years since two schoolteachers went to that junkyard for the trip of a lifetime, and Doctor Who began. Luckily, according to the Doctor, time is immaterial. But let's throw caution to the wind and have a jumbo-sized PS episode celebrating Adventures Through Time and Space. It's safe to say DW is embraced and referenced more by us than any other topic, and it's been a long, strange journey. Reverse the polarity, Sonics at the ready, Allons-y!

This was brilliant - can't wait for the much-anticipated Pod Stallions Battle of the Network Stars Christmas special!

This was a lot of fun.
With all the negative BS out on the internet, this big nostalgia fest was much needed.
I started, much like you guys, with Baker, on my local PBS station, and have been hooked ever since.
While every Doctor has had their good/bad moments, I love them all.
Won't list for every Doctor, like you guys.
Baker is my favorite Doctor, with a 14 Doctor tie for second place, and Robots of Death is one of my favorite stories.

Yeah. Tubi in the U.S. has all the classic Dr. Who seasons in HD. It's even better than PBS back in the day...

I was listening today to the part when Jason was comparing the actor change who played the Doctor with the change of actors who played James Bond and I realized... James Bond is a Time Lord!

The three specials are entitled The Star Beast - The Wild Blue Yonder - The Giggle.
My feeling is that regardless of how well-loved and impressive Doctor Who can be ... it is 60 years old and creaking at the joints. 60 doesn't seem as big a deal as 10 (Three Doctors era) or 25 (The Five Doctors special). Very wise of the 15th Doctor's era to be re-labelled Season One, yet it is emerging out of the shadow of the 60th Anniversary and a 10th Doctor Victory Lap ... a massive lurch backward for my liking. I'd had enough of Tennant by the end of his run, though more likely the scriptwriting quality and its 'soap operatics over science fiction'. However, I don't begrudge anybody for being very excited and I'm sure they will get what they want. I'd prefer to go straight to the 2023 Christmas Special and discover something that is striving to be fresh and surprising.

I have the dvd where it has the beatles in it. I want to say it’s from the episode “the chase” ? I’m pretty positive because those really old episodes I only would have seen on dvd. It’s tragic if they are taking stuff out. I’ve heard that you can’t access “ unearthly child” on streaming.

Mego should have had Doctor Who figures. Maybe a Cybermen. Missed opportunity. I know Bif Bang Pow had their series in 2011.

Mego did Doctor Who in the UK, I asked Marty Abrams about it and he deemed it "too cult" for the US and at that time, it really didn't have the marketshare.

@BrickMantooth I just don't want to fork over $200 to $300 for a vintage UK Mego Dr Who. Love Marty, but I have seen Dr. Who action figures in 2011 at WalGreens Pharmacy toy section, and they were gone within a week. If it's a cult, it's a 60 yr old cult.

My problem with doctor who was peter capaldi on it was a bloody mess. None of it made sense or fell into the lore and it was just a mess. I Really really hope they fix this mess but i dont expect them too. And the bad part is i just dont care if they do.

I also wanted edris alba to be the doctor instead of jodie witaker. She wasnt that type of actor who could play dr who. Edris on the other hand he has so much life in him and he was working at bbc at the time too. Ugh i just didnt get it. The new guy who i cant spell his name looks like he might have something.

For me it was Peter Davidson that made me not care. Just about every story seemed to be him dragging a companion to a place that everyone was being killed off and then leaving after they were all mostly dead lol. Colin Baker's early episodes were rough but he reeled it in and was decent. Sylvester McCoy was awesome imo and was returning the mystery to the show and making you ask who exactly is Who?
The modern series were ok but the whole Donna and Clara storylines made me cringe. Capaldi was great imo but his companions were annoying AF. Whitaker's Dr was a big no for me. Her stories all seemed to be "white man bad, diversity good" or such. Seemed to me Chibnall was just fucking over the established lore to make it all his scrambled brain thoughts.

The Beatles scene is still in the UK releases of the Chase, there’s some copyright issues for North America. The Season 2 BluRay (the big limited edition UK version) is region free though.

The series has arguably interjected a lot of preachy politics since Matt Smith left too. It does NOT make for good storytelling.

I didn't really notice it during Moffat's tenure but my goodness, Chibnall was heavy handed, even when I totally agreed with the notion, I found myself rolling my eyes at time.

Just a few more thoughts on this subject,
    Favourite Stories:
    1st Doctor=
    The Tenth Planet
    2nd Doctor=
    The Web of Fear/The Invasion
    3rd Doctor=
    The Three Doctors
    4th Doctor=
Genesis of The Daleks/Pyramids of Mars
    5th Doctor= Earthshock/The Visitation
    6th Doctor=
    Attack of The Cybermen
7th Doctor= Rememberance of The Daleks
12th Doctor= Victory of The Daleks/Asylum of The Daleks
I tapped out after Matt Smith,
It's a cliche I know but I think it became far too woke!😩
My Personal Choices for The Doctor would be,
    Benedict Cumberbatch
With Tom Hiddstone as The Master.
They're both too big for Doctor Who now but it would've been so cool😊
I Think it needs to get back to being a Sci-Fi Adventure show and Not a soap opera!🤔

Speaking of Bendedict Cumberbatch, fun fact: the female lead role in 4th Doctor story Image Of The Fendahl was played by Wanda Ventham, Benedict's mum! 😃

My fave has gotta be the Pertwee story "Planet of the Spiders." Not only is it Pertwee's swan song, but how they handled Tommy's transformation was brilliant.

Not a fan of Calpaldi's Doctor. But it could be the writing, particularly the Sonic Sunglasses. Seriously. Sunglasses. Haven't watched the show since. I did mail order Doctor Who books and merch from an ad in Starlog Magazine. I remember TVO had Baker Doctor Who, then the cable PBS channel started the run. I still have the plastic Baker era Sonic Screwdriver

I loved Capaldi but wow I hated the sunglasses!
