    What's your favorite elf movie or book? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
    Edit: A lot of people are asking about Santa and Krampus. I cover them in my new video here if you want to check it out: ruclips.net/video/ty7AGMixO6o/видео.htmlsi=kN5diu_e8HXaZwe5
    Personally, I really love Noelle with Anna Kendrick (even though it's newer and not entirely about elves, her character reminds me of Will Ferrell from Elf), and of course, The Santa Clause series for Christmas! In general, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit series are my all-time favorites.
    Thank you so much for all the support and stay mystical!✨

      @@joezar33 Haha, I love those elves too (and will most likely be covering them specifically in the future), but they’re not part of the Santa elf origin story. Tolkien’s and Skyrim’s elves are part of the fantasy elf tradition, but the elves in this video are rooted in older mythology tied to Santa's helpers.😊

      In essence, what are we looking at? I see that the elves have created the tradition to gift one another. However, I believe the reason there are so many things in this world that are made with have forgotten one true thing about this tradition. We must gift the elves as well.

    In the Nordic countries, elves have nothing to do with Santa Claus. Here Santa's helpers are called tomte, or nisse, or tonttu, or päkapikk. They are bearded gnome-like humanoid creatures related to the spirits of homes, stables and barns. They are especially known for the fact that they love oatmeals, they love aninals (especially cats) and they wear Phrygian hats.

    • @zeldatrek
      @zeldatrek Месяц назад +12

      Asking for clarification. How do they "love" animals? Is it the normal healthy way, the same way they love as oatmeal like Haitians in Ohio or like the meth head "more on this story at Eleven" type way?

    • @johndavidnew
      @johndavidnew Месяц назад

      I'm confused. Who likes cats? The elves or the tomte/nisse/tonttu/päkapikk? Either way, if I was an elf, I wouldn't have anything to do with Santa either. After centuries of being enslaved by that fat lazy son-of-a...

    • @danielmalinen6337
      @danielmalinen6337 Месяц назад +24

      @zeldatrek For example, if you hurt a cat, a tonttu will come and carry out revenge on behalf of the cat. But most of the time, it makes sure that the cat is doing well and stays healthy.
      But if you have done something that has angered the tonttu, you must give them oatmeal and beer as an appeasement and a food offering or they continue to seek revenge, cause bad luck, break objects and steal items.

And it still happens! The elves in the workshop work for love of santa, that's all. 😮

    Very Saturnic, in a father time sort of way, great depictions of elves and amazing subtle references to Christianity, like the baptism of fire moment with Teddy, "A pierce always sees it through!"
    Best Christmas films ever!

    I have heard one theory about the changelings. One ethnic groups, perhaps the Celts, were being subject by a genocide by another, perhaps the Anglo-Saxons. The mothers of the children in the group being eradicated would sneak into the homes of members of the dominant group in which they knew that there was an infant. They would remove the infant from its cradle and put their own infant in its place, taking the other baby away. Mothers would realize that the baby they found in their cradles in the morning were not the same one that had been there the night before. This horror, which they could not explain, resulting in the myth of the changelings.

    Fun fact about the fae. If I’m not mistaken, at least. The Fae (faeries) are indeed often depicted as smaller or child-like. However, there are the more “elf-like” fae, they’re taller, similar to the way the elves were depicted in Norse Legend, and they were called the sídhe! Now I am not sure wether or not those stories arrived before or after the two beliefs got mixed up :)

    I read in a book of British folklore that changelings were basically people on the Autism spectrum or had ADHD since back in the day we had no knowledge about it and the Children of Rhys were later dimished into faeries too, just like the Celtic Gods who were descended from Lord Rhys who once was a Welsh King, I can see where Tolkien got his inspiration for the green elves in the Simarillon and where his love of different mythology and languages stems from his surname is Prussia, Prussian is an extinct language due to much invasion which is why he strive so hard to keep these traditions alive that society doesn’t rarely do anymore, not in Great Britain which is quite depressing because stories like that are important to maintain the lessons within which is fellowship, love and above all else faith.

    • @Jimalcoatl
      @Jimalcoatl Месяц назад

      Be careful with modern people interpreting folk lore with modern ideas. Yes, it's possible that autistic and ADHD kids were thought to be changelings, but universally and unilaterally declaring that they were is impossible to say for certain as we have only limited accounts from people living in verybdifferent cultural and scientific contexts to go by.
      We can muse and hypothesize about changelings being autistic, werewolves being manic depressive or having borderline personality disorder, vampires being onsessive compulsives with Actinic Prurigo disease, etc but we cannot know for sure and can't claim those to be the only or even primary origin of the myths.

      Odin also put the dwarves to work holding up the sky building the rainbow Bridge to asgard and making his weapons. So a flying sleigh would hardly be a challenge for them. Also Odin himself is a troll or atleast the word jotun is used to refer to trolls and also to refer to all of the Norse gods not just the frost giants.

      Totally agree.
      For a modern twist try "the Dresden files".
      You won't be disappointed. A good 18 book series and counting. Covering almost anything you can think of.

    Norse mythology really has corrupted so much of what we have. Even the most simplest things we think are okay turn out to have been norse corruption. Hard to see how things are in this world now knowing where it came from.

    This is a good telling of how religion and literature have affected our ideas. I just had to stop for a moment though …. the image of Robin Williams playing Puck just glimmered in my mind.
    He was always a little bit Puckish but, did he ever actually play Goodfellow?
    Cheers to Robin this Christmas Day. Blessings to his family, who are without him. Cheers to my Father-in-law, who had just a little Goodfellow in him also. We miss you Dad!

    Gasp! These visuals!
    This really almost show us the potential for oppressive rhetoric in elf lore. The factories of the Victorians were staffed by very real impoverished child laborers at the same time as wealthy children were being understood as separate from adult and doted upon with ever evolving traditions and conventions like those involved with Christmas. In that context, how convenient for oppressive factory owners and the rich to encourage parents and kids to associate toy making with stories of elves, a happy magical workforce of little people who could be imagined as the perfect willing workers, always working under an equally benevolent boss.

    as far as I remember, the English translation of Grimm's fairy tales is incorrect; it should be "heizelmaenchen" and not elves, they are closer to gnomes or household spirits than to elves

      @Silent_Soliloquies I'm sure you're correct because my German is rusty and I only remember what my mom told me when I was little and I believe that leprechauns could be closely related to the Heinzelmaennchen

      The Heinzelmännchen are a helpful household spirits or kobolds associated with the city of Cologne in Germany, akin to brownie or broonie (Scots), also known as a brùnaidh or gruagach (Scottish Gaelic), is a household spirit or hobgoblin from Scottish folklore..
      The little house gnomes are said to have done all the work of the citizens of Cologne during the night, so that the inhabitants of Cologne could be very lazy during the day. According to the legend, this went on until a tailor's wife got so curious to see the gnomes that she scattered peas onto the floor of the workshop to make the gnomes slip and fall. The gnomes, being infuriated, disappeared and never returned. From that time on, the citizens of Cologne had to do all their work by themselves.. ;)
