Five minutes in and I’m totally engrossed. I’ve followed Vivian for years and love the way that she connects with her state. I’m from eastern Kentucky and I relate to the way that she cherishes the food and ways that came down to her. I loved her PBS show The Chef and the Farmer. 🌟

My mother who was born in 1926 also made hand pies, I am the youngest of 10 and we lived in Manitoba, Canada. My mom would make them out of whatever she could find at the time, leftover apple pie filling would turn into apple turnovers. My older brother and sisters would hear about something "new" like burritos, pizza pops or egg rolls, and she would get creative and throw some things together and see how it would turn out. Man now I am craving some hand pies of any flavor!!

What?! I scroll and see Kinston, NC where I used to live 😫
    The feels....
    Ma's Hotdog house 😭
I spent the summers there wuth my momma, who lived there most of my life when she remarried young.
I went back as a young adult for a few years. Created so many unbeatable memories. I'm so nostalgic right now.
I even worked for a brief 3 days at Vivian's restaurant! 😅 I couldn't get into the pace of a fancy, exoensive restaurant. I'm more of a country girl. But she was a nice lady.
I just can't believe this crossed my timeline!
I'm back home in Ohio now. But Kinston will always be my second home. ❤

My husband and I make hand pies from Huckleberries that we pick on Huckleberry Hill in Pebble Beach. The are coastal Huckleberries so it takes a huge amount of berries to make them. Heck of a lot of work to clean and stem but well worth it! My husband is the dough maker and he will tell you lard is king!

In India, you might know, we have samosas, which can be both vegetarian and non vegetarian. In the western state of Maharashtra, we have a "hand pie" named the karanji, which the South Texan empanadas look like. Karanjis are filled with dried coconut, nutmeg, gul, which is a hard molasses, and other spices. Yum!

The pepperoni roll certainly goes beyond West Virginia. The region includes West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. I grew up in Pittsburgh, and we ate them all the time. Like pierogies, they transcend race and class; everyone makes and eats them in the region.
