If you don't like a new song from The National you just have to play it 50 times more.
Same for Radiohead
Disagree.... this was their worst album yet, but this song I loved INSTANTLY when it came out. I still feel the same about all the choir songs on the album as I did when I first heard them, which is: hard pass, lmao. SWB had tracks that grew on me like a cancer: namely Dark Side of the Gym, which is my second fav from that album. I just... I hope they don’t try to add a whole goddamned army to their 9th album. Good on them for trying to branch out on 8, but just... no more of that again. Also they did Rylan dirty but adding non-Matt vocals to the studio version. KEXP version is still the only version, AFAIC.
Well if this isn't the most accurate comment I've ever read.
@@Paylala So true man, totally share your sentiment!
@@Paylala Good on them for experimenting with guest artists, if that's what they need to do to keep going and growing as a core band. I mean, imagine if The Beatles had been like "Alright alright Johnny, Yoko can sing on the next album, if that's what you think we should do." One guest artist that hasn't been commented on is the director Mike Mills, whose minimalist yet emotional asthetic is absolutely perfect for this album. ...Mike Mills is really amazing! And in the life of The National, in the grand scheme, as this band continues to create a discography with variations and - honestly - the soundtrack of my last two decades ... why the heck not collaborate with Mike Mills and Gail Ann Dorsey at least once!?! Anyway, I'm obviously super loyal to this band as a group of musicians who don't need to stay static for me - I'm appreciating how they experiment and every song they offer.
The National: my favourite sad dads.
and in the end the album doesn't appear to be that sad.
They're not sad, but they like to pretend they are, for the aesthetics, you see...
It's the kind of sadness that has been with you for so long that in its familiarity it has become comforting
Solitary backup singer (African American woman with very short hair) is Gail Ann Dorsey, David Bowie’s longtime bassist. She’d do Freddie’s vocals on “Under Pressure” during live Bowie shows.
oh my gosh i knew i recognised her! came to the comments to see if anyone knew her name, she's amazing! amazing with Bowie and amazing with The National too, the two of them have been my top two favourite artists/bands for years now
cheers for the info
Incredibly talented woman. Had the pleasure of seeing her perform with David Bowie at Glastonbury
No it isn't. It's Siedah Garrett.
Nope. It's Gail Ann Dorsey. Thanks for playing, but try to keep up.
Matt (the lead singer) always reminds me of Hobbes, the tiger from Calvin & Hobbes. Can't explain why.
Ahahahaha, SO MUCH
lol
the holy beard
fanart plz
🤣💛
Another National song for me to overplay a million times but never get sick of 👍💫
You're so right Christine. I never ever tire of listening to all their albums ❤
SOOOOOO true
When I was small, and growing up in England, my late father introduced me to the music of Scott Walker... and now, in the early autumn of my years I'm listning to another class act from the State of Ohio... God bless that state... hope I get to see the "Lights of Cincinnati" before I pass away... thanx to The National from all us sad dads out there
Matt Berninger is learning with Thom Yorke how to dance !
haha! right on spot!!
Hahahahahahaha that is what I thought right away.. reminded me about Lotus Flower 😆
Yep, the force of Radiohead is strong ☺
? What a weird commentary🤮
Lotus Flower video is amazing. God yeah though, how much the National and Radiohead share - both great bands.
dessner brothers are TRUE MAGICIANS! Thank you so much that you guys exist!
@Brit & Patrick & Son Haven & Mullen & Mullen the dessner brothers are the lead songwriters (guitarist and pianist in this vid)
Considering they have one of the most inventive drummers in music, a fantastic bassist and not to mention Matt's genius lyrics and vocals...you are selling the rest of the band short.
Without ALL FIVE of them, there is no National.
@@swarmmaster i absolutely agree
2013: Trouble Will Find Me (Resistance)
2019: I Am Easy To Find (Acceptance)
the production on this is so insanely good
the dessner brothers are awesome producers
@Brit & Patrick & Son Haven & Mullen & Mullen same, the video feels disjointed and jarring. Makes my sense of hearing feel disconnected from what I am seeing. That said, the movie sharing it's name with the album title is a beautiful and truth filled view of a life. Be well!
One of the most gorgeous parts of the song is at 3:25 when the drum beat returns, with that gorgeous dark crash.
You are sooooooo right!
This album isn't even out, but it's already made every year end list possible.
Overwhelmingly gorgeous.
Kevin Morris Rylan alone pushed it on those lists haha
I think this album may make it as my favourite of the year, this or the new Andrew Bird album
John Oregon 'My Finest Work Yet' is sooo good. Probably literally his finest work yet.
@@halt.halt.halt. Ikr! Kinda sad that I don't see enough people talking about it
@@ng3933 The Laura Stevenson and La Dispute albums are pretty solid too, amongst others.
I love your music. Thank you for being with me in my best and worse
Hit the nail on the head
@@unitedsknight7476 🤗
The National, thank you for meaning so deeply much to me. Every time I listen to a song of yours it feels like I'm talking to myself. You guys literally changed my life. I'm forever thankful.
Six days. SIX days... and yet another piece of brilliance from my favourite band on the planet, will be in my eager little, yet older growing, 53 year old hands.
And
I
Can't
Wait
❤
There goes a pleasant sensation through my ears. Some mix of melancholic, edgy rock, electronics, gentle piano, perfect drum patterns, ... melted by the beautiful voices of both Matt and the guest singer(s).
Incredible. Love seeing Gail Ann Dorsey, Kate Stables and Mina Tindle in the video too. Really made my day.
so that is gail. awesome. she's incredible.
In 2023, still my favorite National video / collaboration. Love what these guys have done, thanks!
This band is just absolutely stunning. Everything they do, every single they release, every note they breathe into their work leaves you hanging on their next. Just a revelation time and time again. To me, they’ve surpassed Radiohead as the premier alternative force of our time.
The National are one of those bands that can put out consistent albums that are fantastic as a whole together and not just based on singles.
Stunning song! Here are the lyrics I got by ear:
I liked the old way, I thought
I was hanging in there
You held back the worst rain
from my shoulders then
What are we we going through
You and me?
Every other house
On the streets burning
What are we going through
Wait and see
Days of brutalism
And hairpin turns
Your nervous throat clicks
And my spirit swims right
To the hook
You go quiet and leave me in the wake
Of a terrifying look
What are we going through
You and me?
What is it you want
Me to be learning?
We're always arguing
About the same things
Days of brutalism
And hairpin turns
Say it like I was right
In the room there
(and I)
Say it loud - your head was (keep my eyes open)
On my shoulders
What are we going through
You and me?
Every other house
On the streets burning
What are we going through
Wait and see
Days of brutalism
And hairpin turns
What are we going through
You and me
?
What is it you want
Me to be learning?
We're always arguing
About the same things
Days of brutalism
And hairpin turns
And I
Keep my eyes open
And I
Keep my eyes open
Wow. How thoughtful of you. Thank you
isnt it What is it you want
me to be learning?
Thank you
@@reycian7558 Good catch! I'll edit it.
isnt it "say it like your head was on my shoulders"?
I'm never gonna stop loving this band
I hate how perfect this Music is and how it makes me feel longing for another Life
The crazy lady dance kept me watching, then the song took over when the piano kicked in. Instant favorite.
The percussion is fire on this song. Who agrees?
Finally. Bryan has always been their not-so-secret weapon and he was seriously marginalized on the previous record. Which was easily my least favourite album of theirs. No coincidence. This track is absurdly good.
agreed. devendorf is literally so innovative in his simple, yet very unique drum patterns. no other sound like him.
postmodern drumming
@@nrvs99 marginalized? 'I still destroy you' would like to have a few words with ya
yep..drums are amazing..
Devendorf's restraint and touch is just simply this band's secret weapon. Dont get me wrong, Matt and the twins are great songwriters, but try to imagine their work with a drummer that is just a tad to loud or tad too soft....it wouldn't work. Just listen at the 2:00 mark. These guys were brought together for a reason, and I've known that for a long, long time.
Well put he's one of my favorites
I'm trying to determine whether the cymbal hit at 3:40 is a very dark crash or a China-type.
To drink wine and do shows shitbombed
Yeah, totally GET the 2'00" mark. Good call
That sustained bass note near the end is so soothing and genius. wonderful song.
Dad rock powers in FULL EFFECT!
Album of the year by the sound of the 3 tracks I have Heard
Wow every single was amazing??? I’m so ready.
Piano rifts coming hard this album.
Here is where it takes me to the clouds @2:15... that fender twin reverb sound is amazing!
What a track,it is my dream to see them live.
I hope you get the chance. I saw them a few years back in Asheville, NC and it was everything I had hoped for. Surprisingly, there were many tickets left and I think that is crying shame.
@@radcolortiedye6718 was that the May 4th concert 2018? If so I was there! I got the poster and everything. It was such a good show and introduced me to Big Theif
The one previous to that. Trouble Will Find Me tour. He laid on the floor right next to my seat during Mr November and I sang my heart out, along with everyone else during the closer. What a great memory
Frightened Rabbit opened. I got a picture with Scott, their lead singer, on the stairs behind the theater and just found out he committed suicide or too long ago. So sad.
I hope that you can. I've seen them a few times (and another time this June, outside again)! It's one hell of a beautiful experience.
Their usual subtle brilliance. 😎
Keep coming back to this every half hour or so...
That piano outro is one of the most beautiful things ever, sad it’s not there in the spotify version
also i just want to add that you can dance to any music, no matter how slow or how fast. keep your eyes open
This song made me teary eyed, powerful song and band.
After so many years, they keep getting better and better...
Wow this album's gonna be stunning
"Hairpin Turns" debuted at #2 on the New Alternative 40 Chart this week!
Thank you, the National. I love you immensely for coming into my life.
Wow. Never heard of this band. Love it.
Jason H you have many hours of great music to listen to. Enjoy.
Welcome to THE MAGIC. ;)
0ne of their most beautiful songs
If there's been a better band on the planet these last few years, I've yet to be introduced to them.
THE NATIONAL never disappoints.
i don't know how you guys do it, you make personal, "within", intern lyrics music, so publicly enjoyable and even coincert worthy and it could be experienced in a crowd. you're the goats
The National seem to be taking it to a whole new level with this new album. I thought they may have peaked with High Violet but looks like I was wrong.
Did you miss Trouble Will Find Me??
Yeah you were wrong, they peaked with Boxer
Am I the only one who thought Sleep Well Beast was one of their best albums?
Eh High Violet was the last album I enjoyed by them and I'm not sure these singles are changing my mind
@@apullcan you're not the only one, Sleep Well Beast is in my top 5 ❤️ what a Masterpiece!!
I love the way she dances
Ever since I discovered the band at a concert in Graz some ten years ago they've been one of my all-time favorites. The new National album seems to continue their unique style of playing music ... Chapeau!
Cannot wait - for the album, for the live show , and for the vinyl!
same!
every sound and image by this band is bliss to my senses...
Magic. Thank you!
I know. This isn't their most popular piece but - man! - I LOVE it, so much. :)))
I'm so happy of this album....
Another song and video that touched my soul. I absolutely love the song. "Every other house on the street is burning"
*40 seconds in*
*matt Berninger dad dancing*
??
@@jeffmaher9704 it's not very confusing. Lol
Lol. The penny just dropped. The style of dancing
@@Revealingstorm. The penny just dropped lol
@Brit & Patrick & Son Haven & Mullen & Mullen iI think its a style of dancing, Dad's do at weddings ect. when their tipsy drunk.😜
How do a band do this? I mean, I know I'm a huge fan so obviously biased, but every single is genius. Full of bits and pieces that you only pick up after four of five listens. The soundtrack to my life - as it must be to so many others. For me, the most important band in the world.
something is in his voice that i just cant explain...
It's perfect! I love this song and this band
The new National music combined with the Mike Mills visuals is brutalizing my soul- I feel like a child being exposed to a new heavy truth.
Such a beautiful song.
And hell yeah for more Gail Ann Dorsey.
Since they've been releasing their songs in the morning, (at least here in México is 9 am), they make my day so much better 😍
Beautiful. Simple as that.
Best band on earth. No point arguing at this point.
Thank you again! Obrigado, Portugal 💙U!
Thanks to the National for this song, which got me through a tumultuous 2019.
This was def one of those songs I didn’t like at first. After the 3rd or 4th listen it grew on me and is one of my favorites on this album
Just beautiful.
THIS IS ALBUM IS AWESOME MAN IT'S UP THERE WITH HIGH VIOLET AND/OR BOXER
Strong song with deep emotion the tune stays with you even after its ended ....very well done indeed ..
The piano and synth sounds are so in love with each other.
My second favorite drummer...he's brilliant even on songs like this when he can't cut loose
I love the guitar arpeggios it gives the song a brief sad nostalgic tone
This is my favorite of the three they've released so far
Stranger Among Us
same AF! This chorus is too damned beautiful.
same here
I haven't been this happy from a notification on my phone since 2012! The visual & aesthethetic simplicity are so compatible, especially with euphony in the guitar at 2:14. Beautiful.
The National is always the best
Every single second of this is bliss.
Excellent dancing.
Such a great song. Made my day!!! You guys are the best
Thought this was TV On The Radio when I heard the intro. Beautiful.
best band!!
Already pre-ordered the album. Any year when there is new music from The National, life becomes more bearable 😁. Saw them in concert around the time they released "High Violet" and it was an extraordinary thing to hear them live!👍👍
Beautiful track Thank Tou
Gail sounds amazing. This is a awesome song.
Music of the soul.
Looking forward to seeing them in Columbus
I cried a bit listening this song for the 1st time...
Beautiful. Good song, too.
awesome, just awesome. Can't wait to see them in Philly.
A melhor banda da industria musical.
my day is so much better now
Thank you The National. I don't hesitate when I say that it's the best band of the world with Sigur Ros
Thank you for making such lovely tunes. 💟
Looks like the beast has evolved.
Please add a Turkey concert in your Europe tour !! Love you and your music. Thank you for the good and quality music.
I'm new here, suddenly i love this song ❤❤.
Watched them in Forest Hills last year ,, awesome
Loving the aesthetic of this new album!
So we are having a picnic on a paintball base. It's a long picnic and the party is going to be on in the night. It's a sunset, time of gladsome and silent light, perfect exposure, birds are singing, friends are chatting and laughing. They are on a large swing. Laid on the ground i watched a new video by The National.
Air is cool, but there's no wind. In a perfect exposure I got some grace and it's a beautiful thing that summer is coming because as soon as it starts it would be over.
Oh friends had a picture and then got top of me. We call it "kucha mala" in Russian (a little heap). Everybody turned so drunk, I haven't noticed.
When they announced concerts in Russia I bought tickets at once, and then they canceled them, I erased all their songs, but it doesn't matter.
