I'm going to suggest a very old (60's) one from Japan, called Tampopo. It's sort of a foodie movie, but it DID influence Tarantino's performance in Sukiyaki Western Django. It's in color, all subtitles, but very fun and just enough strange to be engaging. The MAIN story is about a widowed woman trying to have the best ramen shop around, and the help she gets accomplishing that, with a couple of odd side stories that pop in and out. It's a comic delight, you might believe Oriental comedy can be rather inscrutable but it's up front and evident with this one.

Gahhh, I just canceled my Max/hbo subcrptn after 2 yrs of having it. They really annoyed me after I changed my sub to the $99 w SOME ads, but also changed from the payment from my debit to my credit card (I wanted the money back % on reoccurring charges) and they saved the changes to my subscription, added my credit card, but STILL charged my debit card, gahhhh!!!! And I had other things charged at the same time & of course they refunded it, but it still took a few days to land in my account and I had to rush to the bank to make sure I didnt overdraft.
VERY annoying & they said they werent sure why it did that. I waited to renew to make sure the refund went through, then just too annoyed to renew and now Im not sure I want to, lol, but this video might just convince me I should..... Lol!
THankssss Darren, gonna cost me $99 today ;P Lol!

Badlands is based more on Charles Starkweather. Also, when you watch it, you’ll immediately recognize it’s vibe from True Romance, which took directly from Badlands. Absolutely stunning film.
Also, those shirts are killer. Some of the best merch I’ve seen on a channel. Especially love Saint Nicolaus. Might be the first shirt I buy from a RUclipsr. Curious how one gets a shirt like that done. I can’t draw, but I’ve got some designs I’d love to have on my shirts.

Darren, I usually agree with a lot of your selections of “hidden gems”, and this list is no exception. Spartan, The Grey, Upgrade and Mud in particular are excellent films. But House of Sand and Fog. OMG - No! I had to digitize that film when I worked on the Nominations Package for the Oscars that year and had to sit through that relentlessly depressing film. It just never let up. I felt like stepping in front of a bus by the time it was over. Sorry. I guess it takes a special person to get through that one.
That being said, I heartily agree with some of your other choices, including Strange Days, Source Code, and The Getaway (although I think the remake is almost as good as the original). Spartan is a movie I can watch over and over again. It’s one of David Mamet’s best pieces of writing, with a terrific cast. And Mud - well, Jeff Nichols has done some excellent films, like Loving and Midnight Special. And as much as I like Mud, to me his best is still Take Shelter. My first exposure to Nichols AND Michael Shannon, it is one of the most eerie and disturbing films I’ve ever seen. Plus it has Jessica Chastain. Highly recommended. Thanks for all you do in recommending lesser known films.

I think I've seen "The Grey" enough in theaters that they made back their budget. I love it! Liam Neeson gave a seriously underrated and understated performance. He was as tough as his "Taken" character, but with 100x more emotional damage that you just empathize with throughout the film.

At a friend's birthday party years ago we browsed Netflix and came across the synopsis for _Rubber,_ which we all knew we _had_ to watch immediately.
It is one of the best Mind-Eff movies, particularly it's surreal opening/entrance (with the chairs), where we're then instructed to keep in mind that Nothing Matters...

'Strange Days' is one my favorite 90s Sci-Fi flicks. It oozes 90s to an excessive degree, but I don't care. It's still a really cool movie with a fantastic cast. Teenage me was definitely crushing on Angela Basset and Juliette Lewis when I saw this the first time. I've also always had a special place in my heart for Tom Sizemore. He's always that side character with way more gravity and appeal than his few short minutes in the film warrant. Anyway my rule is if they like/love one movie I like/love, then I give their list a try. So thank you for the list. I'll be checking them out.

Appaloosa! The book it's based on was actually written by my all time favorite author, crime writer Robert B Parker. He did a small series of Westerns and appaloosa was one of them - the best IMHO. Westerns aren't typically my thing but I read the book because I'm such a Parker fan, then saw the movie because I'm such an Ed Harris fan. Very much did not regret it, the movie was my favorite western since Pale Rider. You've got some great picks on the list, might have to rewatch some of them!

Good choices. I haven’t seen them all, but I agree with ‘House of Sand & Fog’, ‘Out of the Furnace’, ‘Upgrade’ and ‘Strange Days’ (which until recently, I had never realized was a Kathryn Bigelow/James Cameron project.) Some of my other underrated favorites would include ‘The 13th Warrior’ with Antonio Banderas, ‘Serenity’ with Nathan Fillion, ‘Warrior’ with Joel Edgerton, the remake of ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ with Jim Caviezel, ‘Deja Vu’ with Denzel Washington, and more recently, ‘The Menu’ with Anya Taylor-Joy.

I'll never forget walking out of the theater when I saw the movie Mud. I was completely awestruck. It's still one of the best films I have ever seen and it was the first Matthew McConaughey film I saw that proved to me how amazing of an actor he truly is. Such and underrated movie, It can NEVER be recommended enough.

@@lokabrazi I haven't seen either of those films. Prior to Mud, I only knew him from Dazed & Confused, romcoms and the dreadful Sahara. Although I had seen Reign of Fire, but it was a pretty forgetful movie other than it having dragons in it. I was only 11 when Reign of Fire came out and only 5 or 6 when the movies you mentioned were released, so I had no understanding or real opinion on what good acting or cinema was. Spartan is great, and HIGHLY underrated. And Strange Days, haven't seen that in many years, but I remember loving it.

Interesting...Appaloosa seems to be the birth of "the man in black" in the modern version of Westworld - same actor, too. Appaloosa is now definitely on my list of things to watch. Thanks, man.

Just watched "Gray" the other night. Very well done and it keeps you on the edge of your seat right up until the end. And then you look at whoever you watching it with and say " what a terrible ending!".

I read the novel The Getaway not too long ago. Jim Thompson is so good, very underrated. He also wrote The Grifters which was made into an excellent movie starring John Cusack.

Never saw House of Sand & Fog. I will say that this is Jennifer Connelly's golden era, late 90's to early 00's. She is so hot

I have a special shelf for my favorite DVDs all-time and "Mud" and "Out of the Furnace" are on it. Both are great movies! My favorites are generally intense character-driven dramas with little to no CGI, so these two really nail it for my tastes.
Others on this special shelf of mine are Mystic River.....Falling Down....Wind River....Winter's Bone.... Derailed.....American Beauty....Blood Father..... Spotlight....The Hunter..... The Square....Hell or High Water.... Chloe....The Lincoln Lawyer....Lost in the Sun.....Best Man Down....Sicario

    The ones that I've seen;
Slow West-Not bad, but I'm not that much into Westerns.
Rubber-Weird, but fun. And then some more weird, but still fun.
Strange Days- It's been awhile since I've seen this one, but I remember enjoying it.
    Source Code- Hated it.
The Grey- Overall a decent film.
Upgrade- Mind-blowingly awesome. I haven't seen it since it came out, but definitely going to have to watch again.

“Strange Days” remains for me a Top 3 “wow” on first viewing movie. Best watched on a large screen with a good surround sound system, it’s a yearly rewatch. It also had one of the best cinema teaser trailers you’ll ever see.
