LOST & ALONE: We Should NOT Have Done That! | Sailing Australia

- Being lost is not something we are used to. Especially after 25,000nm and sailing half the World. However it appears that our ability to navigate oceans is not matched by our ability to hike through forests. So after a few hours, we find ourselves pretty lost in the rainforest.

We met travelling around India, and quickly agreed that rather than “settling down” and doing what most normal people do, we wanted to travel and adventure instead and started our sailing lifestyle adventure stories, since then, we’ve been working hard towards achieving our dreams, and now we’re finally living them as sailing cruising lifestyle!

Just loved this vlog. Just felt grown up, funny and beautiful.
Thank you so much!
Nick is such a romantic , ". . . 5 minutes later , the teapot's on and the marital bed is warm " 😊
I dk if any one will read this..but it was really touching to see the two of you just enjoying your life together...I just suddenly lost my man of 18 years. Its been heartbreaking...but watching your. Show takes my mind off the loss for a few minutes...thank you...safe travels....
Thank you. Also, so sorry for your loss xx
One of my favorite activities. Bush whacking! Especially in a country that is known for having 11 of the 10 most deadly spiders.
Love how Terysa's Aussie accent is getting stronger each episode. I have the same issue when I go back home to Melbourne from Thailand.
An explorer who never skins his/her knees is no explorer at all. Love your willingness to expand boundaries.
thanks mate
Awesome vlog, really enjoy watching, you are both so humble and give us a good chuckle 😄 too.
Thanks for sharing
Best wishes from South Africa
Don’t ever change your opening sequence music. 🎵❤️
I'm happy you guys have found a helm position that fits you, I personally would like a fly or sport bridge.
I wonder why Nick prefers anchoring rather than mooring buoys? I (as a charterer, not a liveaboard yet) prefer mooring buoys as they give a more stable position, don't need to worry about anchor drag or that the boat may swing onto another yacht which may arrive after you've anchored and gone ashore
Great episode.........Nick cracks me up with his background antics (dancing in the background while the Mrs is doing a piece to camera classic) good work guys
Hi Nick and Terysa, I have been following SRR for a few months now and really enjoy your channel. This is my first comment and it is for Nick but applies to both of you. I was born in Zimbabwe, brought up in Zambia and now live in South Africa. I noticed that you go hiking in slip slops. I strongly advise that when walking in the bush in the southern hemisphere you should wear proper walking shoes. Both in Africa and Australia there are many poisonous snakes and spiders that can ruin your day. Shoes provide much better protection. Even just a cut on your toes or foot can make things quite difficult when far down the trail. Take care and thanks for sharing your adventures.
Apples and peanut butter are definitely a thing in my upbringing here in the U.S., as well as with banana spears. Also, try whipping in some honey or sweet molasses with the peanut butter for a slightly sweeter treat that is still healthy. It is indeed one of my childhood comfort foods. As always, another enjoyable video. I'm always learning something from each episode and hope to learn plenty more about your cruising experiences. Cheers!
PB, Honey, and Banana! Yesssss! :)
Yes on the peanut butter and apples, with a touch of celery salt.
Exposed helm positions are for short trips ...... I sailed from Puerto Rico to Florida on a Pilot House Motorsailer. It was such a comfortable trip. Exposure to the Sun makes you get tired faster plus those headaches ....
It's so cute that you call grilling things a "barbeque". 😊
Thanks for the memories, after sailing around, my girls and I climbed up to the top of that waterfall years ago, and got lost on the way up and down.
Within the first 60s you can see that Terysa is really loving being back in Australia. It is hard to describe the smells, colours and sounds of Australia... but it is those things that ex-pats (like me) miss the most. I start thinking of Dorothea Mackellar's poem... My Country....... I still get choked up reading it.
I like the placement of the grill on this boat and the seating area.
You should get some type of portable GPS device. Write down the coordinates of the beach and if you get lost. You can just backtrack to your original coordinates.
Or use a cellphone? Plenty of free mapping apps available, including ones that do proper maps offline. Alpine quest for Android is decent.
You guys are simply outstanding!
Ah thank you so much
@@sailingrubyrose Your an inspiration for other sailors, keep on living the dream.. I'm a full time sailing skipper.
I agree, I sleep the best on a boat floating "comfortably" in a bay, Nick may need to bring along an extra pair those hiking flip flops just incase he has a blow out!
When hiking up or down rough steep terrain always remember the three point rule..try to always keep three points of contact and stay leaning forward if going up and leaning back if going down ...and of course bring 50% more water then u think u need...also seems those engines are quite loud ..does nick have any sound proofing ideas for that ...
Download a parking app on your phone and save where you parked your rubber duck then its easy to find it :)
Been watching you for years. Most wholesome and mature of the boating vlogs out there.
Ah cheers mate.
Right on bobojr ! These two have a special vibe happening that I haven't found on other channels. Now I don't even look anymore.
@@JustMe-pp1mp Ya it's unfortunate they fell off that cliff and died though. Heard the crocs and snakes got them.
We had the same experience on Lindeman. We're thinking of leaving markers on our track. Good to see Nick's high quality hiking shoes. Best take bandaids with your snake bite kit.
This makes heading to refrigerator for a cold one all the more thankful.
Enjoy your cold drink mate
You two are great !! Stay Safe & Fair Winds !!
I'll tell you that is one sweet looking catamaran. You guys look very happy on it. Cannot wait for Ruby Rose II.
Thanks mate. Us too
Reminds me of a great quote in the 1980 movie. The Mountain Men.
"- Nathan Wyeth: Haven't you ever been lost?
- Henry Frapp: Hmm... been fearsome confused for a month or two, but I ain't never been lost!”
i should watch that
Thank you for an absolutely amazing and a different view of Australia than I have seen before.
Some times it’s just nice for a slower pace and easier days. Enjoyed watching this video - thank you and looking forward to many more.
I would recommend a handheld GPS for land navigation and tracking your trail.
Nick isn't lost, he is just taking the "Scenic Route" back. Great episode guys. Fair winds and following seas Ruby Rose.
I can’t let my wife see this episode. I’ve always told her to trust me because I’m a sailor, and sailors never get lost! You’ve just proved me wrong.
Yeah mate, possibly skip this one 😉
Being lost doesn't mean you don't know exactly where you are, but that you don't know how to get to a known location.
anchoring versus buoys ? Having chartered bareboat in the Whitsundays in the 1970's three times, three years apart. In those 9 years the damage to the corals in a large number of the anchorages we routinely anchored in on previous visits and dived in (now most have buoys I believe ?) are badly damaged, this wrought by the thousands of visitors was bordering on catastrophic. And that in the 1970's. Like you, I prefer to swing on a hook that I have checked for security and ground holding myself ,than use an unknown strength buoy. But, there is a case for buoys in heavily used anchorages.
What can i say, beautiful Aussie waterways, add a touch of bush and to top it off hiking in flip flops. Welcome to Aus.
Ah thanks mate
We improvised around the Bahamas and had issues getting back just the same!
13:16 - never change Mr Fabbri 😂
No chance of that mate
@@sailingrubyrose This is a very good thing :)
The Minister of Silly Walks
I really love how your vlogs are so genuine and real.
Ah thanks mate
🙄 tosh, lost!?!
With all the GPS tracks aps available (which are very useful for hiking as they make it simple and hassle-free to navigate on trails), I was able to use a Handheld (U.S.A. loaded) Garmin GPS device in 1993 when I was in Italy. Navigating from Massa Marittima to the train station in Tuscany, in the dark then toward daylight.
Next week looks smashing. Thanks fo the honest look..
Bloody impracticale to go wondering about in the bushbush with flip flops, Mr. Nick.
Yes I know that now
Great seeing you again. Keep safe and most of all enjoy
Another awesome video! Just loving these. Thank you for sharing. 😎
It seems the transition to this boat has been a good move for you both, I don't think I've seen you more content, happy and in harmony, together, very long may that bee. Best wishes from Paul :)
Sounds like you need a hikers GPS. You can pick them up from a sporting goods store.
Protected Helm position? No much better to have a monohull with open cockpit and tiller steering!.......
Just kidding Therysa. I have never been sailing, so I know nothing. However, I enjoy being your phantom shipmate. And of course, I get less phantom sea sickness now you are sailing a super comfortable cat.
Great video. Maybe purchase some hiking boots. Sandals are a questionable choice for hiking. Glad no one got hurt or bit by a snake.
us too
1:41 = major crisis in this house that I have to resolve while the rest of the household goes into hiding :) I liked the different feel to this video and the way you picked up so many different themes. For a non sailor like me, focusing on approaching a buoy was really interesting. That must have been a bit of a moment when you lost your way in the forest, but keeping calm and keeping on won the day!
I often eat apples spread with peanut butter. A great way to eat peanut butter for people who want to avoid eating bread.
It’s an amazing snack
a special feature of catamarans Seawind is 2 steering posts. In one of the issues, I would like to see the work with the staysail sheets of Genoa when changing tack (you run from one side to the other or you can do everything from one steering post)
Pretty sure it has a self tacking jib, so not much I guess.
Nicks like a handsome, funny, intelligent, thoughtful and talented version of me just kidding I like to think we are very similar ha ha ha see your blogs always put us all in a good mood
Such stunning scenery. I enjoy this a lot. Reminds me of my trips where I take the good music like the Guns N Roses, Imagine Draongs or the Delta Parole and then enjoy the powerful feeling of the sea. ¡vamos!
Pink lady apple with peanut butter..the best snack! Enjoyed video.
ABSOLUTELY AGREE!!! That exact Apple !
Try some honey roasted peanut butter on apples.
With a cup of tea.
Perfection.
What a totally awesome episode, love it! 💥⛵️👍🏻
Glad to see you guys having fun
Thanks mate
Another person that is not a spider killer. Good for you, dee and deb Chesapeake Bay, VA
Been on a few cats recently and experienced the different helm positions. My preference is the half up / half down combination with all lines lead to the helm (electric) winches 👍
Picnic at hanging rock ;)
Nick and Terysa knocking about in the bush with no pub in sight. That was different and you survived. LOL Great vid guys.
It's great watching Bushman English Nick beating the bushes with a stick looking for scary critters. ;)
Yes, good. Everyone descends from the coastal mountains)) Thank you for the quality and your view of this world
A pleasure mate
Apple and peanut butter is delish! 👍
Having sailed a Seawind 1160, I personally really like the helm position. I think you get the best of both worlds. It is protected when you want it but you can easily sit to the side and get your wind in your hair when desired.
Absolutely love peanut butter and apples.... do not like Heineken!!! lol... beautiful place... thank you!!!
When I went for my road trip in Australia, I got myself a small handheld GPS gizmo.
It helped me finding my way back to the car after a day hike.
Good idea
@@icedcoffee5766 I agree to a point, a compass gives you a bearing, it doesn't tell you if you went by the rocks from the east or the west. Also some places rocks/mountains contain lots of iron that will totally mess up your compass.
You can do all that stuff with your phone, no need to carry more junk.
@@sheerluckholmes5468 11 years ago that was no option and there are many places in Australia without service.
@@dutchglobetrotter4513 My response wasn't so much directed at you or what you did 11 years ago rather at what you can do now. Nearly all phones now have a GPS chip in them and do not need coverage from a service provider. There are many apps on which you can record a track and as long as the GPS can see the sky, it's good to go.
Wow sailors lost on land, Nick wearing flip flops now I have seen everything . . . maybe I have seen too much !
I don't like the blindspot from the A-pillar on my car, so I don't think that helm position is for me.
we have a video coming out dealing with this. It's not an issue.
Ha, there is a rough but clear track up that slope a bit closer to the waterfall. Still a bit of a scramble but you won’t get lost. Keep walking for about 20 minutes towards West Head Road and there some aboriginal rock carvings that are worth a look. There are several great bush walks from the anchorages in that area but they’re not that easy to find and you do need wet shoes or boots to protect your feet from the oysters.
yeah, we found that out too late
Terysa, I forgot to add, that little spider you so fondly said hello to on the main sheet IS the very same species that Nick almost walked into last episode!!! You can tell by the EXTRA long and spindly legs that are pointing out front, they have a very distinctive arch to them. Have a close look at these next time you're in the bush for comparison. Plus, if I remember correctly they seem to have a little yellow ring around each articulating point on their legs. I could be wrong. It's been a while between close inspections! 🤣 But if you don't want to bump into one of these in a few months time...I'd cast the little blighter overboard! Unless he's a male. then he'll not grow much bigger than you thumb! Legs and all. Cheers
Apple and peanut butter is one of my favorite snacks. Also like banana and peanut butter. And holy cow that kettle would give me a heart attack.
Yeah, we’re getting an electric kettle for RR2
We love peanut butter apple wraps in our family 🥰
Another great video. Great work, you two!
Question about how you are tying up to the mooring balls. Is there a reason why you are not using a bridle set-up to your cleats? That would seem to be better for load distribution and less movement on the mooring ball.
Only posted 4 hours ago and already >14K views!!! Gees you guys are famous! Another nice episode Nick and Terysa! I'm glad you're enjoying the Hawkesbury. I've said it before, so I won't say it again here this week. Love to see you down this way though...Cheers
Flip flops seamed like a good choice of footwear at the start of the walk.
🤣🤣
I made that mistake once in a Malaysian jungle and never again.
Great episode I really appreciate the love you two have for each other. Nothing said, just felt.
Glad you enjoyed it
Apples with peanut butter is the best!
Another great episode guys, l loved the NSW waterways when l lived there many years ago, but I’m a WA convert now l must admit.
Keep the excellent video’s coming and don’t get lost again, oh by the way Nick, tapping the ground with a stick will not frighten the snakes away.....lol
All the best, Jack n Steve. 🐶😎
Bahahaha. Damn I thought it would
Just a heavy step or in desperate times, jump up and down while running as fast as you can..... Haa haa
Love Nick's snake tapping, he's gonna hit one and piss it off haha
As always very nice and lots of fun. 😎👍
Thanks mate
12:18 shows cross-bedded red sandstone at the top of the waterfall. Looks like Triassic (250-200 million years old) red beds. The Triassic marks the dawn of dinosaurs and mammals.
On an unclear track, always stop and look backwards from time to time to try to fix your return route. Take some more water than you expect to need.
Peanut butter on apple, celery, chocolate (dark for me), strawberries (with chocolate, or sometimes just chocolate)!
You're not lost... you're here, I found you, I can see you. LOL
I have watched all your reviews earlier and they are "best on market" for a person like me. Then all have their own opinion about things but that is the beauty of it!
Thank you for the great post gig. Indeed we need more beer.
Radios with hands-free headsets seem like a very good idea when communicating helm to bow. Remember that the ease of sailing a cat has its drawbacks like cleaning much more boat inside and out as well as increased maintenance time and costs. Still worth it though. :)
13:15 Nick's way of saying "This is what you get for making me do these shots".
Apples and peanut butter are awesome. Then again, almost anything with peanut butter is awesome.
You beat me too it! My double-down was going to be... try apple PIE with melted peanut butter (LOTS). Nuke 'em together! You're welcome!
How 'bout P'nut butter with celery that's been soaking in cold water. Cold, crispy and quite staisfying. MMMmmmm
Watch some David Pelides lost 411.
Perfect video for a chill Monday 💙✅💚👌
Glad you enjoy it!
Nice one.. How's your boat build going, have they ordered the resin yet? 😉🙂
Haha. Yes the resin is in. Hull 1 is finished.
Seawind helm position wins it for me. Plus not getting fried in the sun, something our mono does not avail :(
exactly this
Spiders are ok but frogs are a no go!
Apple and Peanut Butter is the snack of choice in our household. :)
You have a beautiful boat!
Thank you.
Nick your one HELLof a mountain man and Hiker......In Flip flops....Your a Legend !!! lmao
Hahaha. Yeah bad wardrobe choice
They're ok going uphill... Not much good going down 😄
