I've always took Ru's "Last time to impress me" kinda literally, for example i think Amanda definitely did better than Q in their lipsync but not enough to impress Ru, so she chose Q regardless bc of her track record/potential designs. However, here plasma has the better track record but Mhi’ya gets to stay because she did better in the lipsync. I've been watching drag for 40 years. There is no rule- except for currently on Drag Race- that a great lip sync MUST include outstanding dance/gymnastic skills. Of course we love seeing them, and they're among some of my favorites from the show...but a lip sync is primarily about interpreting the song (anyone remember Jujubee lip-synching "Black Velvet?" It was stellar! ) The first 9 winners of RPDR weren't incredible dancers, and If they (seriously) had to lip-sync for the crown by showing off DANCING skills, many of the best winners (including RajaJinxx, Bianca, Bob) would not have won against their competitors. I find the whole Lip Sync for the crown ludicrous, because lately it's been feeling like a fixed race. Suddenly, Queens who'd been killing it on stage all season strangely choosee to phone it in at the finale (on what other planet can Willow Pill beat Lady Camden in a lip sync?) Yes, a surprise game changer happened for Sasha. But it never really happened again for anyone else since then. This season Mi'yah is considered the lip sync assassin because she does gymnastic flips. Yes, that requires talent. But hell, Katya could do them, too and still lost to Alaska (who doesn't dance.)
What I see Mi'yah doing is dancing INSTEAD OF INTERPRETING THE SONG. Symone could STAND STILL and sell a lip-sync by interpreting what the song meant, what the words meant, what the feeling of it meant. She could make US feel it too.

I think track record should only really matter at the finale. It's like any game or sport, it's not over until it's over. The rules as stated are, if you do the worst, you end up in the bottom and you have to win the lipsync to stay, your track record should only matter if they performed so close that they need something else to call it by but in this case, Plasma clearly did the worst in the challenge and Mhi'ya(beanie aside) completely destroyed her in the lipsync. Those are the rules of the game, of they bend them to save someone then that would be what makes it unfair, not a frontrunner slipping up and going home.

Track records coming into play with lip syncs is confusing to figure out, because it’s not as simple as how runways should matter for determining placements, like how Nymphia’s runway saved her from the bottom in Snatch Game, it’s more complicated than that, and we’ve seen a queen get saved from track record with The Countess, from season two of Drag Race Holland, and the backlash that decision had.

I love the comparison someone made on Twitter of Mh'iya to DeDe in UK5 - both have taken out three people who've won at least one challenge, many of them fan favorites (Plasma, Banksie, Kate Butch). In my opinion, Drag Race gives so many opportunities nowadays for beloved queens to come back, whether for a conventional All Stars season or for a Vs The World format - because of that, I think the discourse over who should stay or go can get a bit extreme, considering we'll be seeing all these fan favorites on TVs again soon anyway. So I hope ultimately, the takeaway is that we've got a bunch of exciting, fun lip syncs with a ton of rewatchability - not to mention great, dramatic reality TV.

As much as I don't think the performing abilities should be the only thing deciding who is an amazing drag artist, it's not the rules of the show.
If you take the track record in account, you never get legendary lipsyncs, because the lipsync doesn't matter anyway. I only agree they take storyline and track record in account if the performances are even.
But I don't think there is a right way to please the fans, the vocal part of the Fandom will always be mad anyway 😂 I just think the show should respect the rules they set and roll with it.

  • @laceisaverb

I feel like 2 win eliminations often happens for queens who have pigeon-holed wins. Take Plasma, who did have 2 wins but for two very similar challenges. Plasma's first win was for a singing interpretation of a musical theatre legend, and her second win was for the Rusical, so she hadn't shown that she could excel in a range of challenges. She had two wins, yes, but production didn't see her as a potential winner of the crown, so they decided to give her a dramatic elimination rather than let her go further. That's the throughline I think of these eliminations, they're for queens who have done well but for whatever reason aren't contenders for the crown, and as you pointed out, whose narrative usefulness (as far as telling a reality tv storyline) had run its course. For instance if Plasma had won vs Mhi'ya, I don't see where her arc could go from there besides just coasting. But giving Mhi'ya the win gives her a great storyline as the lip sync assassin, the drama that can arise from taking down a frontrunner, and all the rest create a great narrative arc for the season's third quarter.

I also think the determining factor in this eliminations is what they can bring to the competition. Like a recent example ppl thought Amanda won over Q in the lipsync (me personally thought Q won) but the things Q would bring to the competition is a lot more exciting than what Amanda would bring. Plus track record is looked at in some cases in determining the winner of a lipsync like Krystal Versace vs Vanity on UK 3 they both did great in the lipsync but Krystal won. Vanity said in a reunited episode with the CVTW cast no one can beat her in a lip sync and someone mentioned Krystal beat her. She was like did she beat me or did she win bc of her track record. Not saying Krystal lost but it’s definitely a factor fs if both queens do good in the lipsync their track records are looked at.

I don't understand what the fuss is with the fan base some time. RuPaul said it is a "lip sync for your LIFE". If the judges ever used track record, then the lip sync wouldn't be as fun - it would be called "lip sync for your RECORD/RUN". That definitely missed the risk of what makes lip syncs fun with Drag Race. If there's no lip syncs in Drag Race, then the show wouldn't exist. My only criticism with the most recent lip sync which kicked of Plasma was the song choice. That Wednesday TikTok is dead now. They should've gave us the original version of Blood Mary by Lady Gaga. It totally changes the atmosphere from chaotic to moody.

I think weirdly Trisha Paytas had something going when she got M'hiya with "Well then youre gonna win the whole thing because no one can send you home" comment.
Lip sync assassins are becoming dangerous because frankly no one can confidently send home M'hiya. So that begs the question: why should M'hiya even bother TRYING.
If you can do the best but flop a lip sync, and do the worst and kill one, what is the incentive to being good at challenges at all? The very least you just wont win the crown but you're basically guaranteed top 4/5 just by being the lip sync assassin.
Lip syncs should matter but once a queen gets to that 3rd or 4th lip sync you start to really wish they could just be sent home already because its clear they just arent succeeding at DRAG RACE.

Eliminations should be based solely off the lip sync instead of track record because it just makes it transparent that lip syncs don't matter and it makes production bullshit too apparent. This is also why I'm still not a fan of lip sync for the crown because they also show that lip syncs don't matter at all and it makes it too clear production meddling. Jinkx winning against Monet in a lip sync will never be believable, and her win on AS7 would have been way more satisfying if they did not do lip sync for the crown.

The problem, for me, is that Mhi'ya's lipsyncs are always messy. Mama can flip in a gown and that's IMPRESSIVE AF, but like Dawn or Morphine said, she broke many lip sync rules: the shoes, the stocking cap, the bad reveals, lip syncing to background vocals or not moving her lips at all in favor of moves. Without the amazing flips, her lip syncs remind me of Silky on S10 against Nina. It's just not polished. Not saying Plasma, Megami or Geneva gave memorable performances either. I just don't see the "she ate, devoured, annihilated" people talk about.

  • @madeleine61509

In my opinion, a lipsync should take into account "who has shown the talent needed to carry them on in the competition." by that, I basically mean that both the lipsync and the previous performance in the competition should count. If you're facing someone who is doing significantly better than you in the competition overall, you should need to give an even more amazing performance to kick them out. Track record basically sets the bar for "how well do you have to perform".
I personally hate it when "storylines" are taken into account to save a queen.

Those lip syncs were slightly lost by frontrunners, but they put up a good fight and proved they deserve to stay.

ngl they cut kennedy of, bc we know she would have destroyed that last performance, but with the edit/reputation she had with the fans at the time, she would never have gotten the win. I mean that's what led to Ginger not winning. It's just sad, Kennedy deserved the finale.
also man seeing Loosey does kinda sizzle in my heart. it was sad to see her always trying to justify her win equity and her performance, which just led to a semi delusional edit and a lot of peers of her not respecting her actual performance, which was awesome. She had two actual wins. And fully deserved them too. Also she was basically the reason a finalist got her second win, so it was sad to see her not being able to stand up for herself esp. to this queen that fully had a win bc of Loosey and still tried to say she's not fierce competition. (but also the unreasonable hate and racism Luxx and MIB got - why?! I mean I get not liking them and saying so as well, but no reason to tag queens in hate nor to be a bigot)

The lipsync for your life is what it comes down to at the end of the day & impressing Ru, with track records more often than not only mattering if the lipsync is truly close. That being said, if a lipsync is closer to the beginning of the season and could possibly go either way + they already have the challenges lined up, OF COURSE they will keep a queen who has been doing better and who they think will do better in future challenges(i.e. why Q was kept over Amanda)

I’m also in the minority when I say that lip syncing should not be the be all end all. I think it should weigh heavily in the decision, but they should weigh everything. Not all queens can do flips, dip and do splits. It makes a lot of the competition feel pointless. Keeping queens you know will never ever win just feels like a waste of a spot tbh.

    • @rasmusmalmberg6468
      @rasmusmalmberg6468 6 месяцев назад +1

Sorry to dump my frustration with the fans as a whole on you, but I really hate it when people dumb down lip syncing to just flips and dips. So many queens have destroyed lip syncs before without doing any stunts and it's so hype to see a stunt queen get bodied by a girl who just has great stage presence and embodies the song. Valentina vs Monet, MIB vs Jax, two of hearts, Utica vs whoever was in my humps. Hell if you want to go there lip syncs like Coco vs Alyssa count. The thing is lip syncing is only partly about stunts and moves. There's so many ways to win a lip sync and anybody who bothers to plan things out, has ingenuity, is good at comedy or has stage presence can do great in a lip sync. All time iconic lip syncers like Sasha never needed to flip or dip a single time. It's also extra annoying because most of the stunt queens can also outperform other queens in general. They're just good ass performers but people always want to dumb them down because their fave couldn't keep up. Just like other skills, some people are gonna have it and some aren't, but if you don't have it you're gonna need to get creative. It's not any different from queens who don't do well in design challenges or queens who can't be funny for the life of them. It's a skill you can practice or compensate for by using your wits, and if you can't do either you deserve the consequences.

Removing flips and dips from the criteria of lip-syncing... Loosey was not good at lip-syncing... XD If you put her against a Mistress, she'd lose. Put her against a Symone, she'd lose. Put her against even a Daya Betty(who is only okay), she would struggle. She barely could win against Spice of all people.
And if your latter have is regarding Mhiya vs Plasma, Mhiya showed the week prior she didn't need to do flips and tricks, but it is a strong quality she has. I'd agree if we're talking about an Anetra or a Jax, who mostly did flips and tricks, but if someone shows to be versatile enough to do either, they deserve their spot because they lip-synced for their life and won.

This video perfectly explains why I always say there are simply NO rules to Drag Race even if we can predict SO MUCH of it based on past seasons. Every episode remains a new day with different elements that the producers and judges might have to move around in their favor at the time or adapt when thrown a curveball they don't expect. We can say "every lipsync should determine the elimination, not track record"- but in the same season where Plasma got cut over Mhi'ya, which was fair, we ALSO saw Q get ENTIRELY saved for track record despite clearly losing to Amanda in that lipsync, but its better to keep Q than Amanda cuz she's the stronger player in the long term. If there's anything I personally despise is the recent semifinal fake outs on S14 and S15 cuz the edit tries to deceive us into thinking someone WILL go home- and its honestly SUCH a waste of our time as viewers. If you're not gonna send anyone home in the first place, don't bother making us believe someone will get eliminated.

They should just adopt a point system instead. Each contestant gets a certain amount of points based on their performance ranking and those who accumulate the least amount of points every week will be the ones to lip sync. That way, you eliminate those who are consistently at the bottom while ensuring that those who are consistently at the top stay for their track record. This makes things more fair for those who have consistently done well instead of getting eliminated because they had one bad day.

There are interesting cases though - like Latrice being placed in the bottom for the S4 Political challenge even though she wasn't among the worst two or even three in that challenge, just because she was the only one who could possibly beat Dida Ritz in a Gladys Knight lipsynch.

But back to plasma , I also think the way they edited her didn’t make her seem like a front runner, even tho she had two wins the edit still made plasma and her story feel like she was just starting to pick up steam. But y’all pls stop coming for mhi’ya .

I also think for Plasma that her story was done. She was the theatre queen, she won an acting challenge and the Rusical, so she kinda made the mark on the show that she wanted to make. I didn't see her as top 3, so getting eliminated earlier with these wins is so useful for your fanbase and all-star quality.
I do think eliminating based on storyline is a good thing for the viewers, not so much for the competitors. We don't want things to be too predictable.

If X and Y have basically the same track record, the best at the lip would stay ant that would be fair. If X is doing WAY better on the competition and Y is not, Y being saved just because they were better at the lip sync is totally unfair! Saying that the winner must have charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent and, at the same time, rewarding someone that doesn't have all that just because their lip sync was better is totally contradictory!
