  • During Episode 85 (January 7th, 2018) we announced our plans to RV Alaska. It’s hard to believe that seven months later, we’re finally on the Alaskan Highway. Mile “0” is the official start of the Alaskan Highway and the unofficial start to Season 5!
In this episode, we share lots of dash cam and drone footage so you can see the road conditions from Dawson Creek BC to Watson Lake Yukon. We also stop at Liard Hot Springs (must stop) for a two-hour soak after lunch. Next weekend we’ll hang the KYD sign in the Sign Forest in Watson Lake and finish the drive to Fairbanks. Stay tuned for more - we’ve done some amazing things in Alaska that we can’t wait to share with you!
📚In this episode, we mentioned one of our fav books “Younger Next Year”. There is a version for men & women that you can find on our Amazon page under “The KYD Reading List” amazon.com/shop...

Alaska the final frontier, Because RV's don't float, we encountered the worst storm i have been through on our way there, you guys should do a storm tips video when you get time. we spent about three weeks just helping the locals having an RV in a storm isn't cool but if it survives it's a true blessing. The people that had RV's trucks,Jeeps and suv's really came thru during that time, just a memory that came back from our trip up there. sorry loved the video,

This brings a lot of good memories 1971. Travis, Air Force Base, California orders to go to Alaska. We got to Dawson Creek found out the orders got canceled go to Whitehorse and turn around and went back to California and open road. 1 ton truck. Good memories now it’s 1923. Thank you for the videos.

Our fifth wheel sits in our driveway waiting for our next trip, but

This reminded of a Far Side cartoon where there were all these bears and wild animals looking at a bunch of tourists getting off the tour bus, with the caption, "Alaska - Welcome to the Food Chain". Great video, but don't forget you ARE lower on the food chain when you're in Alaska. Have fun, be safe.

My Grandpa & extended family live in Tok! There isn't much there, probably why he has chosen to live there for 4 decades. He's known for toting his shot gun every where he goes, from the bar to the grocery store. They're a different breed up there but we love them! 😉 Safe travels.

Love Liard Hot Springs! It was snowing when we went March 2017. My grandma still tells me stories about when they got stationed at Elmendorf AFB and they trekked up the Alcan in the 50’s when it was a dirt road and they had there camper. Semi trucks would have to pull them up the big hills. We miss Alaska everyday!

Love the videos, keep them coming. We traveled in our RV to Alaska with our English Setter (Cotton) in 2015. You have had more rain and traffic in this one episode than we saw our entire trip. On our return trip we took hwy 37 out of Watson Lake to hwy 16 to hwy 97 to hwy 1 and back into the US just above Seattle on Int 5. It was an entirely different view of Canada and all wilderness. Have Fun enjoy your adventure.

OH MY GOSS!! Has the Alaska Hwy changed since I drove it, the 1st time was mid Winter in 1977 I think. And then I drove it again 3 more times. Another time in the Winter, and two times in the Summer. And back then the road was "NOT PAVED" at all like you are having it now in this trip of yours. To see the Alcan Hwy, paved allmost 100% is really something!! Back when it was not Paved, it was so much better to drive it in the Winter Time that was for sure. As in the Summer the Road was a "SEA OF MUD" and I have photo's of my Car that you can't even tell what color my car is dur to all the Mud that covered my Car. I was in the US Army and stationed at Fort Wainwright, at Fairbanks, AK. I loved my time I was up there for sure.

What an exciting journey ya'all are on! I have also been viewing the video's from LJMJ, on their trip to Alaska, and it amazes me the quality of drone footage you both get while traveling! I plan to order both those books, although I don't know if that trip will ever come to fruition for me, since I have a truck that is now 203,000 mile's, can't afford a newer one, and pull the 2011 Gulfstream Visa 23RBK, (26'). Think I would need to plan the $$ for a new engine/transmission, as well as other upgrades, to make that long journey. However, if I don't get to make that dream come true, it is video's like your's and LJMJ that take me there, if only for a few moment's in time. I thank you for that!

It is official when my husband retires from the army we are going to take a 6 month road trip and part of that will be going back to Alaska. Who knows. I dont know if you guys are planning to come back from Alaska via the alcan. But consider the cassiar highway. You go right at Watson lake. Its beautiful as well. And you can take that down through prince George and Vancouver. ..... you guys should travel the Pacific coast highway. We are stationed now in California. Left Alaska in December at -60. Drove the whole coastal highway once back in the states. New season?!?!😊❤

I went to Alaska in 1963 via the AlCan. It was the longest gravel road I had ever been on. It was a common practice to find a highway sign and fasten it to the underside of the car as a rock barrier. It looks better to me in your videos for some reason... I think they've improved it a bit.

I really enjoy your travels, and all the family antics which seem quite memorable for you and your family.
However, you see a lot of beautiful things and a lot of times you're discussing it rather than showing it.
I would greatly appreciate... since I've not been that route and hope to take it in the future to see as much as possible when you're filming through your windshield.
When traveling is there a way you can shrink a picture to the right or left of your primary screen so subs can see you and watch what you're seeing rather than just watching you in the car?
Also with a newer rig (smaller Class A), I look forward to hearing about the road conditions. I've been concerned with everything I've ever seen or read about taking it through British Columbia. Saying the roads are really heinous. I never thought about going through Alberta and I think that would be the route I'd prefer. I'm thankful you're keeping us informed with what you experience, what there is to do, and the conditions.
Love your recap chats at the end.
    Greatly appreciated.

One question (probably a stupid one) but im guessing you used one of the gro pros when you guys were in the water. Do you also have a microphone on it? I notice
you use the 6d most of the time. I am budgeting to take your youtube course but having fun creating ours right now.. Thank you again for the great videos and inspiration to travel.

Yes, the GoPro Session 5 is my fav GoPro. Totally waterproof with two mics. It's what we use for all the dash cam + time-lapse and water footage. The GoPro Hero makes a good paperweight. I use the Canon 6d Mark ii for most everything as I really like the Rode mic and focus.

One of the MUST learns for my boy is driving a stick shift, LOVE the comment when he said the log was a stick shift. Sitting here at the fire station on a weekend researching trips, I had to laugh out loud on that one.

We have been watching for you guys on the road. We just got back into Anchorage from Homer with stops along the way. We are headed north to Denali-Fairbanks country. Hope we get to see the big hill. Safe travels and hopefully we run into you on the road.....and I don’t mean that in the literal sense. 😁

Hi, We had a Golden-doodle, but the doodle never came to be, she was all golden when she grew up. The return label would not stick to her fur, so we kept her. Her name was Ginger. She passed on about two years ago at the early age of 10. We since got another dog, this time smaller, b/c when Ginger got sick we had a very hard time lifting her. We thought a smaller dog would be easier to handle. So we got a Cockapoo, what a adorable dog . You google "bad boy" his picture pops up. 18 months old now and full full of energy for a senior couple. But he will calm down as time goes on. Accept for Charlie's energy he was very easy to train, for potty, for knowing his name ,to come, lay down rub my belly. We love him, but still miss Ginger. Good Luck with whatever you decide. Carl

There are a number of documentaries on the construction of this road during WWII. What those soldiers accomplished in such a short time is amazing. Anyway cool video, the moose is my spirit animal 😁

Fascinating information. We hope to share more about it during this season. So interesting with Pearl Harbor and the funding for the road. The reason for the purchase and becoming a state, etc. Great history.

You should add the audiobook, The Great Alone, by Kristin Hannah. Even my husband enjoyed it. Very good for a long roadtrip to Alaska!

You two are hilarious; total opposites of what Mom and Dad were like when we were on a trip. Dad was always the one who wouldn't stop while Mom and I were always needing a pit stop. hahahaha

I have to give you guys credit, we pulled the trigger on a 2018 Sonoma 240BHS! Hopping to show our twin little girls (10 months old) this type of experiences. Thanks!

Keep Your Daydream I can only imagine! The moose and bear sightings I can see, that’s what the area is known for, it’s the wait what! ones that surprise you. Best part of traveling the open road! Here in Texas, random wildlife ranges from loose cows to a dear heard! Lol.

    Happy and safe travels!
