honestly this case and the “Slenderman” stabbing case both bring the horrible mental health care systems of a lot of countries but in these cases the US to light. i experienced a few things similar to what Donovan went through as a young teen (though i never actually tried to kill anyone). there was a lot of tension between myself and my parents. they were very absent from my life and the few times that they were present, they were always hostile and emotionally distant. i was severely struggling with my mental health at just 10 years old. the summer after fifth grade i discovered creepypasta and i felt such as strong sense of kinship with a lot of the characters. i was convinced that they were real and i needed to take a life to join them. that delusion went on for about 4 years before i was put on a few medications and actually got friends, which helped a lot in getting me out of that delusion. i never thought i was an existing character but i had created a personality that i thought i would become if i killed my family. fortunately, i started getting treatment from mental health professionals and i never went on to hurt anyone, besides randomly hitting my brother on numerous occasions, but it was never anything more severe than some mild bruises
I’m glad you didn’t give into darkness because i have had intrusive thoughts myself, but i always tell myself i have to be a good person i couldn’t bring myself to hurt anyone.
Hunter made a great point when he said that if it wasn't this, it would've been something else. I think the same thing for Morgan and Anissa. I've looked deep into that case, and one of them introduced the other to creepypasta, and the obsession went from there. It could've been anything, but it just so happened to be this fandom.
Anissa introduced Morgan to it. Also Anissa had a strong dislike of Payton for years and felt she was a 3rd wheel in their friendship. The latter is just food for thought because she's the one that got off easier of the two, and basically pinned the whole thing on Morgan who's mental illness made everyone discredit everything she said. Which after watching their interrogations and reading up on their backgrounds is extremely upsetting.
You don’t have to be a Licensed Clinical Therapist (that works with this exact age group) to come to the conclusion that it’s *almost* guaranteed that a serious traumatic event happened to this kid some time before the creepy pasta infatuation began. This is tragic and I hope some healing is found for all of those involved.
I am also a child therapist and I was thinking the same thing. I also have the bonus of being a kid who exclusively grouped with the troubled kids. I have a lot of serious empathy for this kid and also for Heidi. I tell my middle school clients often that I would never, ever, ever in a million years go back to being a middle schooler. Every day you're fighting for your life, if this boy really was facing abuse he was also being told this was the best time of his life.
As a mental health professional you should know it is unethical to make a diagnosis without actually seeing the patient and that it is unethical and impossible to “guarantee” a diagnosis based solely on other cases.
This really happened to a friend of my brothers. His mother abused him for years and he told his friends he was going to do it and they went to the local police the day before he killed her.
Compartmentalization sounds like what happened. It's when a person rejects or suppresses a part of themselves to the point that it becomes apart yet still in the mind. It's similar to DID in concept but far less deeply ingrained.
"push him to get proper counseling" and "make sure he was never alone". ok so they werent helping him? since when is being over bearing helpful? So over bearing they take his phone and look at his personal conversations, limit his access to young love? I dont think heidi was a saint, I do beleive she would trash talk him. And I beleive she would favoritize her own kids, which is why they see her differently. I have seen this first hand. Not to say his action is justified, but people dont magically snap.
also since when can a 14 year old "get proper counseling" why "push" someone who cant do it alone? a kid has no money, no knowledge of what's available or if its even socially ok to go to different types of mental help.
yeah, I have distinct memories of my step parent obviously changing their behavior when they were alone with me. I try not to rely too much on character witnesses in these situations because people are notoriously multi-faceted, and no matter what, people tend to look on the dead in a better light than is accurate.
Yes exactly! Of course her family & friends are going to think she was an absolute sweetheart of a person. But Heidi could have very well have been a nightmare of a person to deal with from Donovan's side of his day to day life behind closed doors. I mean how many times have we seen examples of this from true crime stories?? Like "That person is an absolute angel they would never have done this horrible thing!" But do those people actually LIVE WITH THAT PERSON everyday in their home?? Usually the answer is NO! Again this obviously doesn't excuse what Donovan did. Because at the end of the day Heidi had friends & family who loved and cared about her. But yeah what the victim's family said about Heidi not being this horrible person Donovan painted her as did kind of rubbed me the wrong way. Because how do they really know unless they lived with her every single day? But who really knows at this point when mental illness is possibly involved 😕.
Idk if this counts but i had a fascination with earthworms as a 3-4 year old child. My mom has stories of washing my clothes and finding wadded up, dried out worms in my pockets
From what I've seen about this case, the MW girl Donovan was talking to was obsessed with the things he was. Her Facebook was covered in Jeff the Killer art and they talked about some weird shit together.
15:00 - 15:15 the way he keeps repeating the same things over and over in his explanation is just like the Creepypasta. "The anger was a feeling, a weird feeling, a feeling of anger and pent up feelings."
0:40 I was a middleschooler in the 2010s and I must say there was some creative ones I actually got interested in. I'd listen to them like if they were podcasts lol
Why does everyone “black out” and do horrible things… you never hear “I blacked out and donated money to the local homeless shelter” or “ I blacked out and adopted a baby from Africa”.
as someone who was terrified but obsessed with creepypastas back then this story scared me silly but to this day is still one of my favorites and to have one of my favorite people of all time talk about it makes me happy so thank you hunter ❤️
There's a recording of the call when the police told his dad over the phone, what happened. It's really difficult to listen to. He was at work at the time. I believe they were pretty close. He sounds absolutely broken.
The band Bolt Thrower was inspired by early Games Workshop stuff and its heavy as heavy can be death metal. Check out the album Realms of Chaos if you dare!
Parents never see it coming because they don't make kids show them what's on the phone, in their school work or art or journal. My mom did and she thought the Sith code meant I was sewer slideal. I just was to lazy to memorize it for KOTOR.
@@EagleTimberWolf If you can't trust your kid to have a private journal or entries on their phone then you've already fucked up as a parent. This type of shit breeds resentment and with kids that have extreme anger issues it results in the video above. Monitoring media intake is not the same as what @caterpuss is suggesting. ("school work, art, journal"). Obviously it's responsible to make sure your kid isn't watching ISIS beheadings on their phone, but they should have a private space to write down their own thoughts.
@@EagleTimberWolf ..what is the parent supposed to do? Take the phone away forever? Your kid will see things they aren't supposed too, regardless of measures being made. It's the parent's responsibility to notice something wrong with the child and act on it. I have personal experience with this and the problem hasn't been fixed. Blaming the device and the media is not going to help either party. Parents need to take responsibility for not noticing that their child is not ok.
As someone whose been offically diagnosed with a type of identity disorder like that, this story hit HARD. It's a very good warning on why therapy is so fucking important nowadays.
"Donovans image of Heidi seemed far from the truth". People see the dead with rose tinted glasses. And abuse/neglect is often overlooked. Let alone by those who wish to overlook it. Of course her own children had a different experience with her. Her friends, too. If she had ever done anything to Donovan, only he would know. Unfortunately she is not here to refute or confirm.
It's always incredibly sad whenever a child commits a crime like this, and a tragedy when troubled children can't get the help they need. I can't imagine the feeling of betrayal the mom must've felt when her kid hugged her and then stabbed her. I feel so sorry for the family that was torn apart by this event. I hope that he gets therapy in prison and as intense as the guilt will be when he gets to the point that he feels it, I hope he feels it, Heidi deserves for him to feel guilty about this. Edit: I didn't realize he was out of prison when I wrote this comment, I think the siblings are right for not wanting anything to do with him, even if he became a saint afterwards, he still killed their mom and being around him must be such a trigger for them. I hope that he continues to get therapy and improve himself as a person, but I still hope he feels guilty for the rest of his life about this.
I bet he suppresses the guilt to an extent so he doesn't feel as much pain. I mean I have suppressed some negative things to the point where I feel almost nothing about it before, although it wasn't anything like killing someone.
5:20 One of my favorite meat mannerisms, someone brings up an idea or statement and Hunter just copy pastes it in his own way almost as if he has to say it for himself to fully understand it. Nick just saying something is funny on its own, then Hunter adds his ~freaky~ voice to it and just accentuates that statement
I swear every time Nick comes in with a little snippet into his life it’s like seeing into the mind of a serial killer 😂😂😂 and like he’s leaving little clues to where he hid the bodies 😂😂😂
As a step mom, this was actually kind of hard to listen to. I have 3 step daughters, currently 21, 18, and 16. We've always gotten along, but I dealt with alcoholism from 2016 to around 2021 and I had a lot of bad moments. Yelling at them for no reason and such. Yelling was as far as it ever got but I'm now of the mind that even that was reprehensible. I'm 4 years clean now and we have a decent relationship but...idk all that to say that I feel for Donovan. Being a preteen/teen is hard enough without your parents taking out their own shit on you. Especially a step parent because its already hard to accept them into your life. I still think about it a lot and really hope I didn't fuck them up too badly, especially considering they lived with us because their bio mom is an absolutely mess. Fantastic video, just made me reconfront some of my own shit heh. And like papa said, fuckin seek help, fr. Weather your a step parent or a teen, or anywhere in between, if you're struggling, fuckin seek help. Thanks Papa
I can’t necessarily give Heidi’s friends or biological children’s account more weight than Donovan’s experience. Some parents are just selectively shitty and very good at hiding their bad behavior from their peers. When Donovan was alone with his mom, she might have persecuted him for his clear mental distress instead of actually supporting him. I know my mom certainly accused me of having a huge number of psychiatric disorders when I was a teenager, like I was a danger to society, and would put on this front of concern with her friends. She’d say to them that she’s concerned about my weight, grades, and my slowly developing depression, but actually she was “spanking” me for any minor “offense” by slapping me repeatedly across the face, calling me disgustingly fat, and saying if I didn’t get my 3.8 GPA up, I wouldn’t live past 18. I don’t bruise easily, so my teachers didn’t necessarily believe me when I mentioned it to my friends in elementary, middle, and the first half of high school. Even my dad, tho they were divorced and she was emotionally abusive and violent around him, he didn’t believe me because she would tone down the vitriol and violence in front of him. He thought it wasn’t possible for a mother to treat her child so poorly. He finally understood I wasn’t exaggerating when I told him some of this shit after she threw me out when she thought I was a lesbian, which honestly I wasn’t even certain so that was extra traumatizing, during my sophomore year. No real proof. My best friend hugged me a certain way, and that was her trigger. (We did end up dating, but I wasn’t even aware of her crush or my own sexuality.)
I had just made a comment about that. As another person said in the comments people are always multifaceted! What you see from a person doesn't necessarily mean the other is going to see the same person as you did. And Heidi could have very well have been a shitty ass person to Donovan when no one else was around to witness it. Not that it excuses him killing Heidi, but still! Even I can tell you I am not the same person my family & church members see when I am not around them. With my co-workers I can be a somewhat vulgar person. I didn't grow up with these people so I am able to be a lot more open to them than I can with my own family. Which is sad I know. I feel kind of stifled, and sad that I can't be very open to them. Because there are parts of myself I feel like they wouldn't like at all. But it just goes to show people aren't always what they seem from person to person. Heidi could have been sweet & loving to her friends, family, and boyfriend (the dad). But she might have also been a horrible person to others (like Donovan for instance).
papas face doesnt look like hunter. like he doesnt look like his name is hunter. whenever people say "oh hunter this" i always think his actual name is papa meat
25:36 I feel like putting Etika in there is a bit of a far fetch comparison with the other people shown before. The dude suffered severely from depression and other mental disorders but he still tried his best to be positive to everyone in the community. Keemstar and some of the shitty commentator channels are what pushed him towards committing suicide, with little to no remorse on how they treated him in the first place.
nah keem platformed him during his breakdown and then everyone thought it wasnt real (note this all began when he was banned on twitter for saying the nword (soft A not hard R and it brought a brigade of people telling etika to krill himself.
I can't believe the dad kept a gun in an easily accessible drawer while he wasn't around. Where I live, all firearms must be locked away in a safe and not sure if where Donathan lived but still, if I was a parent, I would never have a gun in reach of my children ever. It's even worse he was away and didn't lock it away, no wonder so many guns get stolen in the States
I just wanna take a moment to appreciate the editing quality of meats videos if I'm not mistaken I think Nick does them. I just gotta say the editing is a huge part of what makes their videos so hilarious on top of hunter's hilarious personality they just....they captured lightning in a bottle with this channel. Never stop doing what ya love fellas
What kills me about these crime stories is how the killers/criminals are clearly mentally ill or disturbed yet they still try and fake how insane they really are as if that's going to help them get away from any kind of punishment. He was clearly faking this split personality it had me rolling my eyes.
The more I read about this case, the more it reminds me of the BS that the Slenderman stabbers pulled to get out of trouble. And just like this guy, one of them has been released and I imagine the other is probably on her way to being released by now if she hasn't been already. Why does the judicial system always do exactly what these types of criminals were hoping for? Especially when there's evidence that they're faking/exaggerating to avoid consequences?
23:50 - I'll have to say that just because other people say the mom was a good person, doesnt make it true. There are more than enough examples of Narcisist parents who just portray a role in front of outsiders.
I have watched you animations for a really long time but I never saw your videos like these I can’t stop watching them now thank you, you genuinely make me laugh thanks ❤️

The trance is “the feeling!” 😮the feeling Jeff felt himself feeling he felt!
I am not a child therapist, but I have a child and in the back of my mind i fear the day she goes to middle school

What the fuck are you even on about dude @@draculinalilith396
yeah, I have distinct memories of my step parent obviously changing their behavior when they were alone with me. I try not to rely too much on character witnesses in these situations because people are notoriously multi-faceted, and no matter what, people tend to look on the dead in a better light than is accurate.
@@zona872 exactly this. yes.
Donovan talks the exact way that the story goes “I felt this feeling that was a feeling.”

Dude I read your comment and happen to look up at the video as soon as it flashed on the screen.
Parents never see it coming because they don't make kids show them what's on the phone, in their school work or art or journal. My mom did and she thought the Sith code meant I was sewer slideal. I just was to lazy to memorize it for KOTOR.
No? It's because of emotional neglect.
@@Wooble_Deathnote Failure to monitor your child's media intake is definitely part of the problem, technically neither you nor OP are wrong.
*suicidal
I honestly don’t feel that badly for Heidi. I’m not justifying it, but I’m not shedding any tears either.
Well that was a lot darker than I expected.

One of my favorite meat mannerisms, someone brings up an idea or statement and Hunter just copy pastes it in his own way almost as if he has to say it for himself to fully understand it.

Thanks Papa
"Everyone has that killing animals phase"
Me: Scared to kill a spider.

What kills me about these crime stories is how the killers/criminals are clearly mentally ill or disturbed yet they still try and fake how insane they really are as if that's going to help them get away from any kind of punishment. He was clearly faking this split personality it had me rolling my eyes.
Exactly. Faking insanity to try and beat a charge is in fact insanity. That alone should've kept him locked up
The more I read about this case, the more it reminds me of the BS that the Slenderman stabbers pulled to get out of trouble. And just like this guy, one of them has been released and I imagine the other is probably on her way to being released by now if she hasn't been already. Why does the judicial system always do exactly what these types of criminals were hoping for? Especially when there's evidence that they're faking/exaggerating to avoid consequences?
Because you can be mentally unwell and still LEGALLY sane. it's about intent and awareness.
23:50 - I'll have to say that just because other people say the mom was a good person, doesnt make it true. There are more than enough examples of Narcisist parents who just portray a role in front of outsiders.
