The minor pentatonic scale is one of the best scales to use because it works on so many musical genres. The problem though is that it can start sounding predictable. This video will help you break away from the traditional pentatonic scale by. simply re-arranging the notes allowing you to come up with new musical ideas FAST!

It might well be the most important thing I learned on guitar as well. And now, like on a slippery sloping sidewalk, I find myself skating along that path a lot. Speaking of which, enjoy the snow and Stay Well Groovy One!

I really like your vids. They help me to think outside of my normal playing, give me inspiration to follow, and refresh my thoughts on guitar playing. So thanks a lot.

I've been pouring over a variety of RUclips videos trying to find one, here and there, that actually stays on point without going down the "you could do this, or this, or this" rabbit hole. This is one of the best I've found so far... good stuff!

Hey David, great video. Also, instead of starting 2 frets lower and doing 1-2, 1-2-3, 1-2, 1-2-3 you can start on the root and go 1-2-3, 1-2, 1-2-3, 1-2, etc. Hope that makes sense!

Thanks David... You are so right. These "transverse" (across the positions) licks are key to freedom and diversity. I remember coming across that same lick you show here in one of your packages on "GuitarPlayback". That was a real boost for me... If I may ask for a special request: How about a full video showing 4 different examples of "transverse" (or whatever you want to name them) licks : say 2 minor, 2 major? Thanks again... You don't know how much your work is making us better players and has a true positive impact on our musical interactions with other players!

I never did learn the 5 caged position for the pentatonic scales until I started working on some of your course materials last year, I learnt the extended shapes years ago, one rooted on the low E and the other rooted on the A, and it's been my map of the guitar neck since the early 90s. It's been great learning the 5 shapes to fill in the gaps and connect with the chords underneath.

My first guitar teacher taught me how to play outside of boxes, which is a very odd way to begin learning. My next teacher taught me to stay in boxes. My next teacher asked me, "Why are you playing in boxes?" Ha Ha! Again, I went back to playing outside the box. I developed a habit of breaking out of the box. It's good to know the box for the sake of efficiency, but it's not good to get stuck in it if you want to play in different tonalities and break in and out of modes. I love David's approach to guitar. If I had a teacher with his abilities early on I would have progressed so much farther at an early age. The dude knows the fretboard. I've been playing for thirty-five years and I'm still learning.

I went the opposite way...I discovered this pattern BEFORE I started playing the other "slices" of the pentatonic scale beyond position one.

David, any chance you offer private lessons? I am full of a little bit of everything and going in circles. I'm a serious learner and need guidance to excell in the right direction, the first time.

OK this was good, but what about all those comments you made about repeating shapes and soloing all over the fretboard (seeing things in a new way besides just the 5 typical shapes). I hope you are going to expand on this. It feels like the video just stopped right where a new possibility was being divulged! Hope more to come...
