So timely. I'm relatively new bass fisherman, and have just had so much luck with green pumpkin. Was out kayak fishing on a rare cloudy day here in the Ozark summertime. I tried junebug trick worms on a Texas rig. That was the number. I was watching other guys with spinners and crank baits striking out while I came in behind and was just pulling out of the lilly pads . It was a great day of fishing.
Florida angler here, go watch my videos of how many bass I have caught on a green pumpkin chatter bait in our tannic water, BUT with that being said when I'm flipping soft plastics June bug, black and blue are my go too. My PB bass 11.7 was on a green pumpkin jack hammer with a green pumpkin zacko.
I live on Live on per acre the most populated lake in the state of KY….Tantic murky water we call the mudhole!!! I found this very true!!! Yes Green pumpkin works but seems like black/blues June bugs to even purples solid bucks do stand out and I’ve noticed wheeler even in clear water throwing white a lot and anglers talking some about how alot do not flip it enough..I may be in that category. Being so pressured I’ve picked up on white/grey working flipping timber filled murky home lake heavy pressure that white works ..I like to down size and sometimes even try to throw some very bold colors in murky and tantic water and found it seems to work even in stained water to caught one over 6 in 12 ft visibility the sun going down on junebug…but so true u can’t go to dark especially in murky tantic water and white and white greys /chartreuse’s..bold colors flat out work and blacks even in crank baits I found that to be weird but it cast that sillete…spoons I enjoy but we don’t have big shad thread fin only and some suckers few and decent amount of gizzard shad so mimic the gizzard but around shad spawn it’s so hard to mimic 2inch 2.5in thread thin over then shallow cranks..I’ve found smaller jerkbaits can work but that tantic water it’s tough!!! Thank god we rip rap and timber everywhere 😂
Most anglers agree with dark for darker conditions, but recently listened to someone who said just the opposite. In fact what he said made some sense to me. He had on a darker shirt, and had lighter shade paint on the wall behind him. When he held up a dark bait it disappeared in front of his dark shirt, but when he moved it out away from his shirt you could see it much better. He said dark colors work great in bright conditions.-, more contrast. Light color bait was hard to see in front of the wall, but when he moved it in front of his darker shirt- once again contrast- you could more easily see the bait. What do you think of his way of looking at it please?
I’ve been fishing to the extremes lately as you suggested in a precious video, and I have noticed a huge difference. I’ve been throwing 13” curly tail and 10” straight tail worms and loading the boat. I also caught my best bass in 3 years, an 8.6. I remember when a 7.5” worm looked big, but now they look like a grub. Lol
Agreed. This was the first year I threw glide baits for bass. And big 5" class underspin swimbaits. I've caught bigger fish this year. It seems about half my rods i'm creeping way up in size. On the other half i'm going down to mop up the fish that don't have the aggression or to get me some dinks when the bite is tougher. Karashi, 4" OG dead ringer or fonesse worm, super fluke jr, neds and baby jigs etc. I didn't throw any big worms this year but I did rig up one for this weekend. It's been fun.
Tannic water is definitely an interesting one, that's all my local chain is. Was up in N. Georgia last week and it was crazy to fish and actually be able to see in the water below you.
I haven't fished this "tonnic" water a lot, but the few times I have, both salt and fresh, I have found that red colors work the best.. even light green with strong red flake. Also a heavy blue has seemed to work. I used to fish these color waters in North & South Carolina. Great video. You're my favorite for actual, factual and to the point information that I can really use.
Thanks Tyler. Definitely gave me alot to think about. Shad, throw more whites and silvers. Mornings, throw darker colors. It all makes sense sitting in my recliner it's hard to put your go to colors down.
I fish a lot of green pumpkin and often times don’t catch as many as I think I should so I’m definitely gonna give the darker colors a try. Thanks for the tips and advice
I live on a 200 acre lake in N. Florida. Extremely clear brown water. Pumkinseed Senkos are a staple and work well. March 13, 2021 I caught and released my PB @ 27.75" bass (no weight available est. 11_12lbs) on a fly lined pumkinseed Senko. I also will use a dark Senko at times however the pumkinseed color gets more consistent action. I will try the June bug color after the next time I'm in town and buy some! 👍
Great tips my friend thank you. I Fish the River and it’s a whole different Animal in terms of lure presentation, it’s always moving lol and yes I have great luck with the Greens and Blacks or dark colors and Red especially.
G pump red flake and g pump magic produce well in tannic water too. Tilapia and tilapia magic colors are g pump base with gold, blue, and green flakes... and they also produce real well in tannic water
Great video Tyler! Up here in New England I like throwing a lot of black and blue and even totally black presentations. Not only are they great for low-light conditions, but I also think they do a good job at mimicking the fry of bullhead catfish which are a large source of forage for our bass!
Tyler..first off your awesome and i am a big fan..i dont use green pumpkin as much anymore because of the fact that everyone uses it!..I can catch more on watermelon red flake..june bug..etc in the same boat with my brother..he's using green pumpkin..keep up the good work and stay safe.
I definitely agree with the black I fish at night a lot and I even use black in the darkest night. I have more black in my box than green pumpkin. Great videos keep up the good work You’re amazing
Was fishing in dark water recently, specifically Black Creek (aptly named), and hooked up on a 5 pounder in upstate NY! By far the biggest bass I've ever caught here in 30 years of fishing. Dark blue curly tail worm did the trick!
I find that man-made lakes (in IL) usually have mud bottoms and fishing black or darker colors work better than the green pumpkin. My black chatterbait with a single curly tail, black plastic will keep me from a no hitter. Great channel!
I recently realized that I love Zoom's California 420 color. To me, it seems like half green pumpkin, half watermelon red flake. Been having great luck with trick worms that color.
Zoom has some absolutely killer color patterns! That being said Cali 420 is one of my go to summer baits. Why? Because as the water is getting maximum sunlight a lot of the forage that bass feed on the color pigmentation tends to change. I.E. they’re getting a solid nice green color on top while the bottom half stays lighter. Especially black bass.
In a bunch of ponds and lakes I fish green pumpkin and black and blue are a must but some days a watermelon seed senko will out produce both, and I have no idea why
I live in Palm Beach county Fl. green pumpkin will work in the black water but only when it's sunny and the middle of the day. Any other time it's black and blue for me. I fish those two colors 95% of the time down here. My pb is 11 lbs 2 oz., so I'm doing something right. I also have caught at least 10 10 pounders. I live in S. Fl. so it's not that hard to catch big bass once you figure out how. When I go for big bass I only catch 1/10 as many as I would just regular bass fishing. Shiners work and punching thick mat with a 2 oz. weight. Shiners get you too many smalls but sometimes a giant, punching thick mat is when I only get big ones. I'm sure there are other ways, those are just my ways.
The thing thats so great about Tyler’s videos is how he puts a ton of emphasis on doing something different. Im also from Ohio and you absolutely need to be doing something different than everybody else. Our lakes are smaller and heavily pressured. I almost never fish full size baits around here im always using the smaller sizes and using weird colors.
I fish a very tanic colored lake it's actually classified as a marsh and you are absolutely correct I catch more on black or June bug just like you said
I asked one guy whether he had ever tried gin with his “tonic” water. A couple guys have “tantic,” which gave me ideas, but my wife isn’t interested in “tantric” anything.
Simple fix. Go with black or black n blue to start with. Put the green punkinhead stuff back on the rack. Looks good on paper but... go with black. Good anywhere.
Here in the deep south and our shallow waters, I go with junebug way more often than I use green pumpkin or watermelon red flake. In fact, most of my plastics are either junebug or black blue flake. And yes, the water clarity is often more than 5 feet.
great info Tyler. I agree 100%. I am a little surprised that you did not say muddy water, because I definitely find that a black blue, or June bug works better than green pumpkin in those conditions. then again, it’s more a scenario where I think green pumpkin does not do as good as the other colors but, can still get bites and muddy water. Especially if you chartreuse the tail. Ha ha Thanks!
Up North it seems that lakes seem to be clearer to me. I noticed when I'm crushing them on a Green Pumpkin jig once it gets dark the bit dies off. I switch to a white chartreuse swim jig and it works. Very interesting, Thanks for the video.
Candlewood in CT, which is fairly clear but there is a color that Yamamoto used to make, Black with Gold Flake, is killer on Candlewood. Especially in a Spider Grub. You used to be able to get a special order of that color if you ordered a ton of them. Tackle Shops and clubs would pull together to get a big enough order to get them made
I wish candlewood was clear, we have 2-3 foot visibility at best. I’ve won many events there and none have been with a black and gold flake being a part of that 😁
Hey Ty I love what your doing here and the way you explain why do this way or that way. If you don't mind could you do a video on your top five lures to fish when in Arkansas.
I always use copper blades on my spinnerbaits and inline spinners when fishing in tannic water, also. The copper shows up much better than nicely ang gold blades in these conditions.
Rumer has it Bass can only see red and green and I also witness a man the other day who made a lure out of a small block of wood and was catching bass. Sometimes I think we get to technical with are Bass fishing

Dude, what on your camera causes that red spot?! I keep thinking something is jacked up on my TV until I see it move. 🤣 Ever punch with white or silver? That’s part of my future punching plan.
I have been leaning towards black and blue or black and silver because its natural but strays away from the greens everyone is throwing. great color.
Me too. Junebug and Black/Blue.
Pumpkin orange with black flake works good in that color water but black n blue works good junebug red works too.
I needed to learn more about color. I'm going to chase down some white or silver tubes!
Thanks
Have you done a video on soft plastic jerk baits, when to use them and what colors to use?
