- "I remember her profile of Elizabeth Taylor & Richard Burton in Time magazine. It's a brilliant piece." [Jerzy Kosinski]
"I wrote to her and told her she must write a book, yes." [Anthony Burgess]
The book is simply called "Cavett." Buy it. It's by far the wittiest book I've ever read. It's just tremendously interesting. Every other chapter is (appropriately) a conversation between Cavett and his college roommate who by then was an editor at Time Magazine. And oh what conversation - two incredibly intelligent guys, and the conversation just crackles.
I loved the Dick Cavett Show!
Jordan Peterson, was quoted as saying the following about the terrifying novel The Painted Bird by Jerzy Kosinski: "It’s a semi-autobiographical account of Kosinski’s post-war experiences in Eastern Europe as he wandered through the wreckage as a child."
Please be informed that during WWII Kosinski was never separated from his parents. He constructed the work out of other people's sufferings and his own imaginings to create himself a victim's mythology. From this aspect the work is ignoble and debasing. The facts of Kosinski's young life (and survival thanks to a peasant village who sheltered him and his parents) have been documented by journalist Joanna Siedlicka in Czarny Ptasior (The Ugly Black Bird).
i know, it all turned out to be a lie. that whole tanker car full of rats was way too implausible. watching it in 2022 knowing what i know about jerzy all i can say is boy did he have a lot of nerve.
His wife was hot
Can you imagine getting a FAN letter from Anthony Burgess? Ouaoueeeee! I wish t.v. could be like this, omgggggg! They could at least broadcast the reruns of this show, that would be so cool
Well, Jerzy, isn't it obvious? The man who has had no plan, who has no concept of his future, who makes his bread by asking other famous people about their lives-- he's looking for ideas! (This, incidentally, is the same reason we ask kids, "What do you want to be when you grow up?")
Jeez, Dick was quite adept in any sort of company.
I could never sit there while a group of people thoroughly discussed me as a subject. Anyone who can do that and not get queasy is brave in my book. Go onstage and act or speak in front of crowds, sure, but having your true self examined and judged by others in front of a crowd seems so frightening.
Super nice to see that fake flailed. By his own guest no less. When I was a kid and he was in first-run, I was a fan but now that I am much older, I no longer am.
talk about being put on the spot? why are they clapping?? must be for kosinsky calling cavett out on his claim to fame NOT
aheeeeee! 02:07 :D
The entire convo seemed to be a fast pace script...
That woman has since died too? Who was she? I couldn't find any info... Barbara Hower it sounded like?
Anyway, Jerzy is brilliant and it makes sense from who he is that he would be focused on whom one will become.
Barbara Dearing Howar.
