There's one more, very obvious, sign. Exhaust smell, depending on the conditions how/where you start your vehicle. The stink from the exhaust becomes rather obvious. Probably one of the best signs it's time for some maintenance. ⛑ Cheers
Why does that smell happen?
This video was so needed. First ive heard someone mention the glowplug relay in conjunction with the dpf. Cheers bruh!
Understood all that thanks, just to confirm the glow plugs are only there to start the motor, once started they are not in use, why then will the motor lose power once running and fuel usage increase?
Because the glow plugs are also used to raise the temp of the car for a dpf regen, so if they are faulty, the car wont dpf regen
If I’m driving down the motorway I can feel the engine like judging if stay at 60 it’s like holding back then if I speed up it’s gone
I've had one glow plug issue for about 16 months. After having the car in for a service now it's two plugs. I've only in the last few days been told by Vauxhall. That the engine will not do a self re gen, because of the glow plugs. I've always had petrol engined cars, this was my first diesel and the last. Its done 110k and only ever had one new glow plug. I'm going to get the four of them changed. That's the one thing I didn't look in to when buying the car. And that was how expensive glow plugs are. (Astra GTC sri 2.0)
started without glow plugs at minus 12 degrees Celsius ..E46 320D 110KW
Damn that's impressive!
Thanks, this is very useful information.
Everything is expensive to replace on german cars. My suzuki has all filters, plugs upfront. I paid 4 euros in labour which includes tip of 1 eur. Got NGK glow plugs for approx 8 eur per piece
Why is that?
@@leviyambao5575 different design philosophy. German cars are way harder to work on and parts are sometimes located at the back of the engine so you have to take the engine off. Everyone here in India knows this now and sales of German cars, which are good for driving pleasure btw, have tanked.
Can you explain please the abs errors and how to fix ?
I got Passat tdi 2.0 I needs to change 4 glow plug nd it’s shit on the fuel could u plz tell me cause of glow plug or something else ???
try replacing your fuel filter and glow plugs. Also try running a good diesel injection cleaner and a couple of full tanks of shell fuel through the tank. I have a VW and that was advice given to me by a VW specialist garage. Worked a treat on my tdi Bora. Hope it helps!
I have a Passat 2.0 tdi. Winter has come again and it struggles to turn on, it drives shaky and struggles to change gear the first 5 minutes I’m driving it. Once it heats up it drives normal. I’m also getting a step my diesel smell. I’m thinking maybe it’s the glow plugs? And if it is do I have to change all of them or just a few ?
hi can bad glow plug cause rough start and white smoke after start? the smoke disappears after few seconds
Yes, white smoke is unburnt diesel, or can be condensation from a cold day.
I’ve noticed my car is struggling to start when left overnight, it seems like it’s catching but dies out. No engine faults come up when scanned. Sometimes the car starts perfectly, sometimes it takes 4/5 attempts… SO ANNOYING. Can’t take it to garage because there’s no warning lights/no fault codes and the issue doesn’t happen all the time :(
Have you tried the fuel filter? Their could be air entering the fuel system!
@@drivelife.channel I wouldn’t know how to check but I could try get it booked in so the mechanics can check. I’m about to get brand new discs/pads all round for my car so I will ask if they can do some checks.
Did you find the fault ?
Is it possible to have a glow plug issue without any failrude code in diagnotic program ( f.e. INPA)?
Please answer someone
Hi hope I get a reply I hsve a vaxhuall corsa sxi 2012 diesel, the glow plug sign is always flashing and sometimes turns off the fuel is very bad for full yank I only get 120miles I'm not sure if it could be gloe plugs hopefully getting it to mechanic this week
Hi I'm having problem with my mercedes a class 2.1 diesel it struggle to start in the morning but when it starts and warms up it's fine and I have a error code p0196 so do you know what the problem can be. Thank you 🙂
P0196 relates to the oil temperature sensor, chances are that the sensor is faulty! or it could be a one off reading. Clear the code and check if it returns :) if it does it is a very easy fix :) let me know and I will film a replacement video :)
@@drivelife.channel I did clear the code but come back so is this sensor causing the issue with the starting
Yes, it will mean the car thinks it is warmer than it actually is! the car won't use the glow plugs or use a rich fuel mixture which it should do when cold starting :)
@@drivelife.channel if I change the sensor will it fix the problem
It should do! if it doesn't it will still be beneficial for your car!
Mind gives out white smoke first start up in the morning and is lumpy but then fine all day
My grandfather has a 1997 diesel, glow plugs never changed, it doesn't make black or white smokes even on cold starts, no warning light, misfire, is it a good idea to change now or wait?
glowplugs are cheap, sounds like there aint a real reason but it wont hurt to change em regardless
Quick question:
Anyone experience that the engine will seem like it's catching but then die out?
A little gas once starting (kept at min 1,000rpm) to keep the engine running until warm has hits and misses and lumpy and then runs fine once engine is warmed up.
Sign for me is that the glow plug light stays on when ignition is on for the same amount of time whether it's 30c or -30c (About 3-4 seconds) then the glow plug relay audible clicks off after about 3 minutes and the rpm spikes.
Sounds on my Fiat Punto 2 (188) 1999 has a big power draw on the glow plug system so I'm suspecting glow plug relay now. It's a new battery and alternator is fine.
Should relays tick once when key on but then make a loud audible click (like someone has tapped the bonnet) when they switch off?
Check your engine and egr thermostats also this can also hinder dpf. Regens
I got same issue with my car, the glowplug light dosnt come on in my vauxhall astra, and the car tries to start but doent first I thought It was the battery but after using jump pack still struggled so cheaked and the relay seems to be gone so need replacing, but yeh its same on all diesels.
Is is an expensive job to replace
Hi, I got a vauxhall astra 1.9cdti, and it starts but only if I take the intake pipe off and spray easy start in it and still struggles to start, but the glowplug light doesn't come on dash at all, and doesn't start up just cranks and cranks, what can be the issue I've done new fuse and glowplugs as well still doing it
Hi, seems my gloe plug module has failed. I live in hot climate never under 10oC. Dpf is also off. Does it make sense to fix this? Or are the glow plugs not used? Thanks
Helo, i have a corsa d with these samwe issues. But when my car revs over 3 thousand, my engine warning light comes on for a few seconds and i lose a bunch of power and cant rev over 3 thousand again. Is this a plug issue aswell?
Yes could also be injector issue :) this is most likely because as you rev the engine the fuel pressure is increasing, if the injectors are blocked than this will cause excessive back pressure which can cause the engine management light to come on :)
How do you diagnose the fault to see if it's the plugs or module?
And obd reader will bring it up :)
@@drivelife.channel I've plugged my obd in and I have nothing saying there is a fault but when I start the car (only when it's cold) it either struggles and has some smoke of just has smoke if it's not cold, it's weird I thought the same that if a glow plug was outside its range it should throw a code but I have no codes
@@drivelife.channel after its had a warm up or once started it will start no issue at all ?
@@markweeks7548 hi what was you problem plz
@@Face2Fox if I knew I'd tell you buddy, I had a poo battery that I had replaced that helped but when it's really cold it still takes a bit longer to start maybe 5 to 10 seconds but when warm start will take no more than 2 seconds
"That's definitely probably"😂
My e87 runs lumpy for about 15 secs after 1st start do u think it could be glow plugs mate? Runs good other wise apart from iv noticed my mpg has gone down but iv done a res and backbox delete so have put it down to that
Yeah that sounds just like glow plugs to me :)
@@drivelife.channel nice one mate ill get them looked at
Get them tested first, as it maybe the module that's gone which is much cheaper than replacing the glowplugs 😅
@@drivelife.channel thanks for the Info mate, I'll get my mate to check it over tomorrow top man 👍
@@crf250rider9 what was the error?
hi i have a 2006 jeep cherokee 2.8 only hard to start in the morning with loads of white smoke for about 20 second then fine all day been told its the glow plugs are a weeping injector any help on this problem pleas
cheers
did you replace the glow.plug relay module? mine is the exact same year with the exact same error code and mime wouldnt start first time today
Not in the end, the car was written off before I could do it!
Hi mate how much did the glow plug module cost you?
Cost alot. OK. Hope that answers your question
On my 335d it's around £130, so probably less for that 1 series.
just wondering but if on say a e90 bmw 330d if the glow plug module has failed will this stop the car from starting ?
Thank you,my garage has put me three new ones is,he said that would be enough,to fit a fourth would cost another five hundred quid,as there is so much more work to acces it,anyways,my freelancer is firing up now no flat battery, and as you stated the engine accelerates nice n smooth, all the best.
I hope you kno glowplugs cost 10 pound each? Lol you got ripped off
Tell me about it, I have a 4th Glow Plug that requires removing the intake manifold and dropping the injection pump, high pressure lines. 3 are easy to get to.
On a 4 cylinder you'd get away with 3 good plugs but it'll run a bit rough and out of sequence until the engine warms up.
Ideally you'd want all of them replaced and as it's not something you'd do regular it's better to do it.
@@slatkamala4900 I know yeah hahahaha wtf that garage is raking the money in
Mate the music is drowning out the audio
Nevermind it was a glitch where the audio from an advert was on top of the video
Does it affect the monitor?
