Noise When in 4WD Auto Turning Corners 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn

  • My 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn has a very noisy 4 wheel drive Auto system. I can hear louder than normal driveline noise with my foot on the gas when in 4WD Auto. The noise is like a scraping or groaning noise. The noise gets much louder in tight turns. I get no wheel hop. The owner's manual states you can use 4WD auto on dry pavement. Of course I would never try 4WD High or 4WD low on dry pavement! The 4WD Auto system is designed to sense slippage and engage the front wheels when it happens. 4WD high and low have the front wheels engaged all the time and should never be used on dry pavement. But, my 4WD Auto makes groaning and scraping noises when in use. Others on 5thgenramforum who gave the same truck day their 4WD Auto is whisper quiet.

Good luck getting resolution! Mine still makes the noise.
The zone manager and the dealership both say it is normal.
Funny, the F-150s I drove or the Chevys never made that noise.
Mine can be so loud at times, that you think the tire is scraping the wheel well liner. Ugh..

It’s binding and front differential might need to be rebuilt. ( had my rear differential rebuilt because it sounded like metal to metal scraping while driving). Definitely have it checked out.

I did have it checked out and, of course, FCA said it was normal.
The truck only has 7,000 miles on it now. I bought it for retirement and it's not my daily driver.
It'll probably disintegrate after the warranty is up.

Mine does it too. One dealer said normal. Haven't brought to another yet - was too busy having them fix my drive shaft bumping problem twice.

Thanks for your comment Nick. My truck is in today to have the entire rear differential replaced - another separate problem. I wanted the service manager to ride with me to listen to what I am hearing in either the front differential or transfer case. . He said he would, but the noise is normal when in 4WD Auto. He said the Chrysler area manager said it is normal as well, so no point in a test drive. The owner's manual states you can drive the truck in 4WD Auto on dry pavement. Both the service manager and area manager said you should not. I want to drive another truck like mine to hear for myself. My Ford never did this. I'm so sick of dealing with FCA's factory defects for the entire year of ownership! This is my first and last FCA product. The service manager said they have about $15,000 worth of repairs in my truck so far.

@@cjspease are you the guy on 5thgen where they rebuilt the diff wrong?
My drive shaft would stick and then slam forward when letting off the brakes after a stop. First time, they replaced driveshaft. Came back within 500 miles - turns out the replacement shaft didn't have grease on the splines of the rear slip yoke. Brought back, dealer had to order a boot kit and the special grease, plus a special tool just to do the job. Got it back last night, it's 99% better but I can still feel it every now and then, ever so slightly. Could just be the 2-1 shift, but I'm so used to that hard bump that I don't know what's normal or not.
Not impressed either, but reading forums for Ford and GM - they're plagued with their own issues too. Kinda wish I went with the Tundra like I originally planned.

@@vietnamrebel Yes Nick, I am the guy from 5thgen with the diff rebuild, now to be completely replaced as we speak. Also Ivory 3 coat Paint issues, a bolt found in the heater box that rolled around and made noise, pano headliner fasteners issues, the harsh downshift from 2 to 1 ect., ect. I really wish I would have bought a Tundra as well. My cousin owns one - 15 years no issues. A coworker owns one as well - 10 years no issues. My Longhorn will keep these issues up over the course of its life. FCA has a world-class design with entry level quality.

Great video my 2019 5th gen ram used to do it even in 2wd test yours ,
stop vehicle make hard left or right turn and then accelerate vehicle on dry pavement warm or hot tires preferably they stick more and noise is more pronounced, when wet pavement or snow no noise from rear end.
To solve problem change rear diff fluid to Mobil 1 synthetic 75w140 with limited slip additive buy additional mopar additive for limited slip diff $11.00 on Amazon put whole small bottle in rear differential it will solve problem guaranteed if so you own me a beer 😀
what was happening since is limited slip diff (anti-spin rear differential) clutch pack was sticking not being able to free rear wheels when cornering trying to turn two wheels at same time which is good for drivetrain nor differential,
Most likely MOPAR used low quality rear differential oil with lack of limited slip additive ,I hope this can help.
(oem spec is 75w-85) I personally wound’t use it its a fuel economy. Scam to save 0,5 % on fuel economy same as CAFE agreements 0w20 oil between automotive industry and government they get credits for every vehicle using low viscosity oil (use 0w30 cold climates ,0w40 for south high quality synthetic oil) in your engine oil ,
    Best of luck.

Auto mode transfer case clutch engages 4×4 if
      Temperature is below 40 Fahrenheit
      Windshield vipers on
      Detects water on the roads
      Detects wheel sleeping
Gear mode shifting activation + -
And when you start cornering sensing clutch input in transfer case reduces 4×4 to prevent binding ,
Best 4×4 system ever made unless you are going in heavy long off roading where clutch would overheat and 4×4 goes in reduced mode,
Ram 1500 Rebel models are equipped with good all direct locking 4×4 better for off road but not for driving every day in different types of road conditions snow ice dry payment.

Thanks for the comment Mike. I hope there is a flash to fix the issue, if it does indeed exist in all trucks with the 3.92 rear end and 4WD Auto. Unfortunately FCA or at least my dealer will not offer the flash unless you complain about the issue again and again. I'll have to keep checking TSB's for updates. The entire year of ownership has been a completely miserable experience. Wish I would have bought an F150 or Toyota instead. All brands have their issues, but FCA appears to excel at them. Great world class designs but lack of quality and customer service to back it up.

I have a 98 f150... howls when i hit the gas already at higher speeds.. howls when i turn tight enough too... just replace gear oil in the front to find insane amounts of metal shaving it looks like liquid steel it was wicked... but the new stuff has dropped the noise down a little however its still there... now for the good part.. one thing the new fluid didnt change was the binding around turns... almost like the brakes are being applied. wanna know what a death trap is on a snowy road? Its when this problemcauses you to actually get sucked into the ditch when you hit the plowed up bank. So imagine 45mph on a road and then a turn comes up and you still going 30 to 35, well sometimes you hit the snow thats on the shoulder right? well with this binging issue it hits that snow and then the wheels almost lock up and the instability actually sends you off the road to the right cuz its a left hand corner and you're really just going straight.. well it feels like the brake is applied which would make sense... and with my rear breaks weaker than my fronts right now its making an easy drive a death trap... also im wondering if this guy had the front modified to a limited slip front diff.. that would make sense the binding... if its not a limited slip do you guys think my front end is failing?

Why not leave it in 2WD and only engage 4HI/4LO when you need it instead of 4-Auto? There is more chance the computer may detect slippage during turns and engage 4WD when you don't want it.

Can I understand what the benefit of 4WD on dry pavement would be?

    • @cjspease
      @cjspease  4 года назад

There is no benefit using 4wd on dry pavement. The idea would be to use it when the weather conditions are slippery. But, when driving in winter weather, you never know exactly where the ice will be, especially at night. So, leaving the vehicle in 4wd Auto, allows the system to sense slippage and engage when necessary. My whole point, which was not picked up well by my phone microphone, is just how noisy my system is when it is in 4WD auto waiting for slippage. I know different manufacturers do things differently, but I just drove an F150 Limited and Raptor, who's systems were completely silent. There is a transfer case output seal ordered for my Ram as it is leaking. The rear differential has been completely replaced in my truck. Possibly, the dealer damaged the output seal when removing or reinstalling the drive shaft.

    • @cjspease
      @cjspease  4 года назад

I never did get it fixed. As long as you are in rear wheel drive only there is no noise up front. FCA insists that the noise is normal. I obviously would not use 4wd on dry pavement, but I certainly would use 4wd auto, when conditions are uncertain - such as a day when there may be some rain, snow or ice. FCA replaced the entire rear differential assembly after they first tried to rebuild the ring and pinion gear. That was a miserable failure. The rear differential made all kinds of whines and noises after the rebuild. Finally they replaced the entire assembly. It's much better now. But as far as the transfer case or front differential, I'm not happy. You'd think they'd get it corrected after all these years of building trucks! There are way over $15,000 of just parts in mine so far to fix factory "F" ups. The video I recorded doesn't do the front noise justice. It's way louder than what the microphone on my phone picked up. The first time I heard it, I thought the wheel was scraping the fender liner. That's how loud it is! FCA has awesome design for their vehicles, but quality totally sucks.

FCA claims that is normal as well. I totally got screwed. This truck had a $70,000 window sticker. Unexcusable! It does ride better than the F-150's though. I took out a 2019 Limited and Raptor. The Ram definitely outclasses both in ride quality. Obviously the Raptor is the off-road version, but the Ram still has more finesse.
