Riddick bowe threw the belt away due to politics. He was definitely not scared, just didn't want to play by their rules...at that time Lewis had all the political pull, WBC, HBO etc
It's never ducking when you have multiple belts and bigger fish to fry. Both bowe and lewis signed a contract to fight and all lewis had to do was get by mcall. We all know what happened there.
@Greenfields 12 bowe had offers to fight foreman, rematch with holy and others, and signed 7mil contract with hbo at that time and YOU LIE when you say he refused. bowe signed a contract to fight lewis at that time and it was LEWIS who refused to sign. it just wasn't the contract lewis wanted. lewis was offered 3mil for the immediate match or 9mil for a fall fight. the WBC was also sued by rochigiani and had to declare bankruptcy and restructure and was allowed to continue existing only by the grace of rochigiani. the demand WBC made on bowe after beating holyfield was that if lewis didn't accept any offers (he refused them all) it would go to purse bid end of january (bowe had just beat holyfield in november) and the lewis fight had to take place within 90 days of the purse bid, and the standard WBC purse bid splits would be rewritten just for that fight, which is corrupt as hell, especially considering all the bs they have pulled over the decades with other fighters. AGAIN, bowe signed a contract to fight lewis about a month after beating holyfield, which lewis refused to sign, and then bowe later signed ANOTHER contract to fight lewis, which lewis DID sign. all lewis had to do was get by mccall, but got ktfo, then lewis got ktfo AGAIN by rahman. i just provided FACTS that prove you have no idea what you're talking about or you are a liar. one or the other. bowe signed twice, and both times lewis failed, and the WBC is corrupt as hyell and is lucky to still exist.
lewis's first fight after being handed a free title? the greatness known as tony tucker. a year after that first free "title fight" when he was signed to fight bowe next, lewis got kfto by mccall.

Dont think Bowe was scared, I blame his manager who gave Lewis a 10% deal which is outrageous. Bowe got like 25% for his fight against Hokyfield. Then Bowe and Lewis were supposed to fight again if Lewis beat McCall and well that didnt happen. Then Bowe was supposed to fight Lewis if he beat Golota which we knew what happened there.

Then Bowe ducked Lennox by dropping the belt in the trash because Lennox was WBC # 1. Unless you mean later on when their camps were negotiating again and Bowe wanted an 80-20 split which is silly. This is actually epic, back in the day it was a different energy, Lewis was commentating as well and he had a headset on just like he does here. Lewis probably just went back to that memory and then realized they are older and Riddick Bowe was actually being kind to him.

I feel for Riddick, he and I are the same age, I sound, walk, and can do more pullups than I could 20 years ago. Understandably, boxing seems to have damaged him. Also, Riddick is broke after earning 50 million in boxing. I remember feeling Riddick was better than Evander, but didn't like to train, and he had a lot of charisma.

Bowe didn't duck Lennox Lewis. Riddick Bowe was a champion when Lennox Lewis was barely starting his pro career. Lewis fought Holyfield and Tyson out of their primes and also missed the fight with Riddick Bowe (also out of prime) by a hair.
Lewis was to meet Bowe in 1994. Lenox Lewis was to defend his World Boxing Council heavyweight title against Riddick Bowe in Las Vegas between November and May.
(This depends upon Lewis' successful mandatory defense against Oliver McCall at Wembley in September, and Bowe winning a comeback fight after losing his titles to Evander Holyfield in November.)
But as history had it, Lennox Lewis got knocked out by Oliver McCall, and the fight never happened.

Bowe cost Lewis the chance to fight for the Undisputed title in 1992 when he ducked him and gave up the WBC belt. It took Lennox another seven years to get his chance when he was cheated out of it again with that outrageous draw decision against holyfield.
Bowe will always be the man who gave it the mouth but when it came to the crunch, wouldn't face Lennox in the ring. Outside of the US he's always been regarded as a coward for that.
