LAJES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (TER) TERCEIRA ISLAND AZORES PORTUGAL (What is it like)

- Hi everyone welcome to Travelzilla. This time around I will be your travel guide at the Lajes International Airport, located on the island of TERCEIRA, part of the Azores Arquipelago, Portugal. Terceira is home to many tourist attractions such as the incredible city of ANGRA DO HEROÍSMO, a city that has been the capital of Portugal in the past and that has served as a model city for Portugal's most important colony, Brazil! In fact many Brazilian cities today look a lot like Angra do Heroísmo (Diamantina, Ouro Preto, Goiás Velho etc). Terceira is an incredible island, home to amazing attractions such as the Boicoitos Natural Pools, Victoria Beach, several volcanoes, caves such as the Algar do Carvão, the fajãs and furnas!
In this video I will tour the Lajes International airport (TER) with you, talk a little about the Aerogare Das Lajes, commercial terminal, how it is a mixed used airport located in a military base, give you some stats regarding this particular airport and how traveling in the pandemic has affected the airport in the past couple of years.
The Lajes International Airport ( Aerogare das lajes) is the Azores main hub for international flights, it is used by Tap Air Portugal as a stopover point for flights linking Portugal to Boston and other destinations in the United States as well as a hub for Sata International. Is is also served by airlines such as Sata Azorean airlines, RayanAir and Tui.

The US Air Force sent me on a temporary duty assignment to Lajes Air Base for about 3 months in the spring of 1973. I worked in Engineering and the Site Development shop at Lajes was behind on engineering projects, so I was picked to go. We had a civilian working in the office. Through him I got to know a number of his family members and friends, and travel around the Island. What wonderful people, and what a great place. One of the many memorable experiences I had in the Air Force.
BTW, this is who handled what for the US military assigned at the Base there; the Army operated the tugboats (yes, that's right), the Navy did the flying (hunting adversary submarines, the Cold War thing), the Air Force maintained the facilities, and the Marines guarded the many fuel storage tanks at the fairly expansive storage facility. Ocean going tankers delivered a variety of fuels for different applications, thusly the need for tugboats. Again, memorable.
It's a small world. I'm from the UK, my ex work colleague, used to be in the Portuguese airforce, based at Lajes. My current Portuguese work mates father was born there on the base. And, my grandfather, in 1943, was in the Raf, and helped to establish Raf Lagens , so that the German U boats could be defeated.
Not long after, Terceira became a staging post, so your bombers could fly from America, to the UK.
After my grandad came home, the Raf handed over to the Portuguese.
wooooow what an incredible story! Thanks for your services. It makes me so happy when a simple video like this reaches people such as yourself. I have a little story to tell you myself ( although nothig compared to yours of course!) My ancestors were the first people to inhabit not only these islands, but also Madeira. Navigators João Gonçalves Zarco ( the discoverer of Madeira) and Antonio Leme (Whose father financed the takeover of Ceuta and the seige of Arzila and who was a well known friend to Columbus for 10 yrs) were both my ancestors. Their descendants as well as many of my ancestors from the order of Christ moved to the islands as well as some Jewish ancestors who were often sent there. After colonizing these Islands via many branches that I descend from, these branches moved onto Brazil to colonize and populate it, but we kept the history in our family alive which is why we have kept our Portuguese citizenship to this day. I am not from the Military, but many of my ancestors were so I appreciate what you guys do very much!

I used to live there from 2010-2012! Lovely people there & beautiful views of the ocean everywhere. You can drive around the whole island in about 2 hours.
hello there, thanks for writing to me. Can you believe that my ancestors were the first inhabitants of this archipelago? lol they stayed there for 300 yrs and started migrating to Brazil in waves. The azores are so pretty. I need to go back there to shoot a big special about it. Been to one island so far due to the pandemic. Back then it was really difficult to fly in between the islands.
@@TRAVELZILLA That’s really cool! The island is also free of franchise restaurants in which we never missed because all the food is fresh there. Biera Mar was my favorite restaurants on the island with fresh fish daily & delicious wine! Their Alcatra is outstanding!
I have been to only one other island, and that was São Miguel & it was a bit more tropical.

I would love to fly to Terceira Island someday. I must go to the azores at least once in my life! There are a lot of Azoreans in Brazil! Huge population of Azorean descent there. I know a lot!

I love that place. I visit back in 2000 for 3 weeks and I also stay. I am Puerto Rican and if at the time I knew a little bit more Portuguese I stay.

hello there, thanks for writing to me. How long are you staying there? I would totally spend the night and maybe the moring in the city of ANGRA DO HEROISMO. It is so pretty there. That city was the capital of portugal 2 times, the island was the first place to ever be called Brazil and Angra was a model city to all those Portuguese colonial towns in Brazil like Ouro Preto, Diamantina, etc...it is very pretty, small. Spend some time there, grab a cup of coffee if you can. It is a world heritage sight. Thanls for writing to me, please subscribe!

@@TRAVELZILLA this was in August 24 2001 when flight air transat 236 lost both engines over the Atlantic because of a fuel leak and glided for more the 30 minutes and landed in emergency, there is a movie about it it’s called Piché entre ciel et terre its Canadian French.
@@TRAVELZILLA Thé plane was too high and too fast but he managed to land it successfully
I guess the military merged with this airport bc when I was there was a terminal for the AF and the Aeroporto for the other areas. I used to live in a hill in Lajes where I can see the planes arriving and departing.

Great vlog!! I will be the airport for whole night, so I am wondering that can i stay there overnight? i'm confused because i saw some reports that the airport would be closed 10pm - 5am. And could you please tell me is there a tax return center? If I buy something in Europe, can i get the tax return before I leave in the airport? Thanks for your help!!

We need to leave our car at the Lajes airport for eight days. Does anyone know if there is a long term parking area and how much the fee is? We have our own car on Terceira.

heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey I'm following you here already! You know, I descend from the first inhabitants who have ever lived in both Madeira and the Azores. I mean literally, not kidding! I got my Portuguese citizenship from an Ancestor who migrated to Brazil from Ponta Delgada, but I got Azorean ancestors on both y mum and dad's side ( and Also Madeira and Portuguese from the continent). I have found ancestors on 7 out of the 9 islands! I've been to Terceira only.....due to covid, but I am due to go back sometime soon! You should definitely visit and feature in your channel the incredible Azorean influence in Brazil and also film FLORIANOPOLIS an island that calls itself the 10th island of the azores!
