  • After I was released from quarantine, I quickly headed out to explore Terceira's top attraction: the UNESCO World Heritage City of Angra do Heroismo. The city, founded in 1478 (before Columbus' voyage!), boasts a myriad of historic colonial ruins, cream-coloured churches, mosaic cobblestone streets, and crumbling, charming alleyways.
    From Angra, I headed to the Lajes International Airport to catch my afternoon flight to Ponta Delgada, the capital of the Azores (just a short 45 minute flight from Terceira).

    We spent a week on Terceira in November 2021. It was one of the most amazing places we've ever been! We spent a lot of time wandering the country side and it was incredible. Great food and wine, really friendly and charming people!

    Amazing beauty! I was in Terceira very briefly in 1985. Our US Navy flight to Sicily and Spain stopped to refuel at Lajes AFB. In 5 yrs I'm retiring and have been seriously considering a second home there in the Azores. I've been watching a ton of videos, especially Carlos and Laura's videos from Pico Island.

    I was born there and don't remember it looking that old. I walked every step you took on a daily basis. Left in 1972 went back in 1990 and still don't remember it looking that old.

    WOW! Great Video! May I ask what it is like on Terceira if you are not a car driver? Have you been able to see how the bus networks are developed? Is it possible to experience the sights or hikes without a car?

    • @DrifterDave
      @DrifterDave  2 месяца назад

      It would be very difficult to rely on local buses, especially for off-the-beaten-path hiking and exploring. Buses travel between Praia & Angra, but schedules aren't exactly tourist-friendly. I'd say your best bet is to budget for taxis as needed, hitchhike (Terceira is very safe!) or rent a bike (or a combination of all of the above). Joining a guided tour would also be an option. To be honest, you may be better off just negotiating a hired taxi for a day or a half day - I'd estimate the cost to be approx. 50 Euros for every 3 hours - a pretty good deal if you consider you have the driver as well!

    What strikes me is the complete lack of garbage in the streets and the absence of any graffiti. In most cities, when you get to the decaying / decrepit buildings, you also will have both of these things, but not in Angra do Heroísmo. You can tell when the residents love and respect their home.

    Hey! Awesome video! Thought I would let you know that my husband actually helped build the Angra Marina Hotel and it is not anchored to that giant rock which was used to look out for pirates and because it is a pi vê of history it cannot be used for anything or as an anchor! If you are wondering about anything else don’t hesitate to ask away!

    • @DrifterDave
      @DrifterDave  3 года назад +1

      Good to know! I enjoyed my stay at the Angra Marina Hotel but was concerned about so many cracks in the walls! It is impressive that they were able to build this structure along the hillside, but I’m wondering if nature will take its toll on the hotel over time 😬

    • @jts7806
      @jts7806 3 года назад +1

      I’m trying to translate from Portuguese to English, so it will take about 20 years for that type of structure to make its home because of tiny earthquakes that most of the time you don’t even feel them, so that’s where the cracks come from and it will be completely settled in approximately 8-9 years!

      This is the island where my parents are from. They moved to the US with my brothers and I was born in the US. I’ve visited Terceira many times over the years as we have family there and I hope to live there for 3-6 months at a time in the next 4 years. I love it!

    my beautiful birth place unfortunately we had to move to the mainland as there's hardly no opportunities being such a small island and sadly and quite honestly from what my angel of a mother told me there also wasn't much opportunity in the main land so when my parents divorced i was 8 my moms side of the family had all pretty much moved to Toronto Canada and sadly i never been back to my country sense im 30 now so over 20 years my game plan is work my ass off same as much as possible and retire back to the mother land

    Nice Island. Too bad you didn't have time to go around to explore more and try out the food. They seem to have a balance between keeping it's culture and charm without selling out to Tourists like those Canary Islands!

      You’ll notice I don’t eat a ton of food on this trip - mostly because the majority of restaurants were shut down. I did mostly self-catering, so I missed out on many great Portuguese meals.

    Dude, you didn't have an experience with the locals.
    Unfortunate.
    Your footage was only in Angra.
    If you go back, go around the whole island, TALK TO THE LOCALS.
    You'll find yourself fishing, having wine, sleeping at peoples homes, being fed till no tomorrow, being taken to the hidden gems, laughing your ass off.
    Go back, trust my suggestion!!
    Maybe it's not your thing as you didn't explore at all.
    You missed out on a lot!

      I went during the height of COVID under heavy restrictions, and spent all but two hours in hotel quarantine in Angra (26 hours in confinement). There was no opportunity to travel in that sort of way, but I do hope to be back in Angra eventually (ideally during summer) and experience all the island has to offer.

      I spent the majority of my two days in Terceira in hotel quarantine (not by choice) so I missed out on a LOT of the things I had planned to do. I was told my Covid test results would be in within 6 hours, but they took well over 24 hours to be reported back to me (at the very end of what would have been my day for island sightseeing). As I had all my tickets booked, there was no flexibility to extend my stay.
