Is Doll Collecting A Disease?

    Hi! Thank you for taking the time to watch this video. It’s really important for me because I know I have a problem, an addiction and I have been worried about my well being.
    Since leaving "the clubs" I have realized how spoiled I was. The agressive nature of the work, however, would not pay for any more dolls or anything in my life for that matter. Earning that money, in that way, was no longer a part of my abilities.
    With my last livestream, I do declare it will be the absolute LAST doll order for me, I have so much more doll & toy content planned, toys and dolls to unbox, stop motion, face up’s, kawaii DIY & more. So I know I need to focus on that and halt my doll spending habits.
    I feel very very lucky to have gotten Pipy, Endomiel, Acid Akemi and I can’t wait to do my Dal kit. I know I am very lucky and I feel more than satisfied with my collection. I am scared with my self-control but I know I can do it. I worked so hard to achieve this collection in such a short time. I think my existing collection deserves more of me, and I just can’t attend to them if I buy more dolls.
    I had my credit cards at zero balance the entire time I bought my collection. It was only that they had balances after Japan. I thought I would pay them down quick as I always did with cash from "hustling” but that hustle had become something impossible to do for my self & my soul. My family had their own worries regarding it as well.
    I was really depressed I couldn’t get doll and toy hauls anymore, I sold some big personal crystals to buy some Barbie’s, and then had to hit up pullipstyle one last time, I was worried I would feel left dissatisfied but making this video has been very helpful - I do feel complete with this journey in many ways. I tried to get a job at Toys R Us but I believe I wasn’t hired for my appearances. My body and schedule can’t take on teaching dance and yoga/ fitness FT either. I’m taking it all as a sign to full time pursue content creation on RUclips.
    I have many other face up’s in queue Pullip, RHD & OMG, and I really don’t NEED anymore dolls. It started out as a huge high which was exciting but has also became an anxious journey with mixed emotions, this summer since Japan, it DID boil down to: debt & clutter. If I buy more dolls without cleaning some I already have, my health will decline and I won’t make it back to Japan.
    So it’s time to re-pattern my habits. I hope you will help encourage me and support me in this journey. If you relate to my story in anyway, would love to hear from you in the comments.

    Amazing break-down!
    Dolls are a great fall-back for when life gives you lemons. Dolls are therapeutic and make great companions, there's a reason we use words like "adopt" and "my doll family". Dolls, unlike flesh & blood friends/family, will not abandon us or suddenly die of cancer. I am not gonna lie, when I spend more than a week away I miss my dolls. Sometimes I look at photos of them on my phone and that helps. I think that if you see your doll family as a permanent replacement for engaging with real friends and family it's time for a break.
    As for the costs, it's about budgeting and living within your means. As a collector, it's important to be realistic about the risks (pleather [oh god I hate pleather], re-releases, yellowing, hardening/brittleness, stains, scratches) and not treat your collection as an asset even though it is true that expensive/rare dolls may retain their value. I think that if you are justifying buying a doll based on potential resale value (but have little successful experience in selling dolls) it's a red flag.
    Having dolls has helped me achieve "inner happiness" and by participating in doll communities I've met some wonderful people irl too. So for me it's worth every cent.

      Awe this was so insightful ! I agree that my dolls are like family to be and the doll community is a community with much authentic connection. But yes … realistic about the risks of each doll. I’m also now meditating on playability and just creating new criteria for doll things I buy! And speaking of pleather… I totally have to prep my sailor scout outfits 😝

      Doll collecting is something that has brought a lot of joy for me. I've met some great doll people over the years and it's nice that they have the same feelings about dolls. Most people don't understand it. There's a history, a nostalgia, a reminder of our youth. I think doll collectors are creative, artistic, caring, and kind people which nowadays is hard to find.
      I've never bought a doll thinking that down the road it would increase in value. I bought it because I liked it, it spoke to me, whatever the reason. Sure, I've spent quite a bit of money on dolls but my house, car and other things are paid for and I'm comfortable and no one does without because of it. When I'm stressed, worried, or just having a really bad day, I can just walk into my doll room and look around and everything is good.

      Thank you so much for sharing! Sounds like you have monitored your spending in a balanced way and can enjoy your doll hobby to it’s full extent. I also have allllll my stresses relieved when I see and play with my dolls or walk into my doll room. On the other side, I have looked deeper into understanding if I need to downsize or control my spending habits within the hobby!

    Yes, I am addicted to doll collecting… I am being more careful, but I buy and making myself choose. It’s been tough, but I’m making progress and enjoying my collection more…. Plus as I’ve said before I want to have a beautiful room to put them in, so I can enjoy them more than I do now. I have no money tree therefore, I must stifle myself!!😂

      Carefulness is something I didn’t even really consider I think !! I’ve created new criteria for buying a doll now- basically pay down my debt to under 30% and then for every two dolls out- I could consider getting one! At equal price! For your room plans!! I thought of a theme and then I spent months scouring Facebook marketplace and thrift stores !

    I absolutely love this video 😊. I don't regret my doll purchases but I do not want to collect anymore. I want to play and appreciate the dolls I have ❤. I am a collector at heart and I have collected many things...I came to the conclusion for myself that it was the thrill of the hunt(especially during the Beanie Babies era of my collecting...I am that old) but now I am just wanting to stop and just reflect and give thanks for the fun I had and appreciate life in general. There is always going to be a pretty doll...
    And I hate the feeling of something else controlling me but me! My Spirit is giving me the signal it is time to take back my control. When I say No, I gain more self discipline and control 😊
    Enjoyed watching and thank you!

      I can appreciate this feeling. It kind of reminds me of a friend of my grandparents who quit smoking by keeping a cigarette in his pocket and pulling it out when he wanted to smoke. He would look at it and say, “I’m the boss!” It worked for him, and the story stuck with me for decades because it could apply to lots of bad habits and addictions. Easier said than done, but it fundamentally comes down to getting to the point of taking back your power.

      @dollvee  9 месяцев назад

      Awe !!! I had a beanie baby collection too!!! Turning 33 in a month - reflection and appreciation is something I want to focus on too. Yes… I don’t want something controlling My Spirit either … discipline is something I am also always working with. Thank you for sharing - and I’m glad we could relate - I feel even more motivated to make these changes and create more minimalism in my life!

      I love this story too. Taking back our power is something we can do daily. For me, I didn’t even realize how much I was spending on even little things. Little visits to Daiso or the dollar store- it all adds up - right now I have a blog in my phone regarding cherry blossom season in Japan because I really want to pay my credit card debt down and save for that. So that’s my little cigarette !

    I started buying dolls a little after my birthday in august of this year. My first doll was the Chelsea Barbie doll that was technically inside my birthday cake, yk those Barbie cakes where her dress is made out of cakes? I was so overjoyed because I was having a “Barbie summer” and I ended it with a real doll. I loved her and still do because she gives me the comfort I wanted from dolls when I was younger but wouldn’t get because I was a boy so I did not want to get judged. Now I have around 12 dolls. In the span of a month I’ve bought that many. Thank you for making this video. To hear it from another doll lover, especially you being my first doll oriented content creator that I ever Watch is really refreshing. I don’t think you are painting anything or anyone in a bad light. Only message I got from this is to get priorities straight with luv x and always look at the bigger picture.

    • @dollvee
      @dollvee  9 месяцев назад +1

      Wow… thank you so much for taking the time to share your story and also congratulations on your collection! It’s important to accept our choices but also to enjoy them and like you said - look at the big picture and settle and ground into our priorities. I never meant to target anyone and I feel relieved some people can relate to the main topic I wanted to discuss. Barbie Summer was the best! I have no regrets on all my Barbie’s but I’ve already sold 7 where I just kept their outfits and have a small group dolls I’m already letting go. It’s not easy! Dolls can definitely give us comfort- specific ones definitely. That chelsea is so cute !! (Just looked her up). I’ve learned a big group of dolls and a small group of dolls can be equally comforting but basically to really accept what’s in my budget ! And for every doll I buy- that’s money that could go towards like a trip to Japan -
      my doll addiction had me forget about other things I wanted to experience in life too!

    Amazing and insightful video! I recently hid a doll I purchased from my partner because even though she wasn’t expensive I just don’t have the space AND SAID I would stop… that’s when it clicked for me that I am actually addicted. Dolls have been a part of my life for a long time but it’s just something I need to gain more control over.

  • @Pandorafriends
    @Pandorafriends 7 месяцев назад +8

    Oh my! So many thoughts about this. It’s a very thought provoking and honest video. I think I sometimes wonder if I am buying more dolls than I need in order to maintain a youtube channel. I think for those that struggle with doll collecting, it’s basically a shopping addiction. And that could be toys, cars, clothes, or jewelry. I know I have struggled with depression. I have tried therapy and medications. I think I was in a constant state of fear as a child with little happiness that my brain doesn’t naturally produce enough happy endorphins anymore through normal activities. Presently, I love my life and family, but the general melancholy is still present.
    But then, it all comes to moderation. And sometimes, that’s pulling the plug if you're having challenges with moderation (like alcoholism.) I do agree that we often don’t spend enough time on the dolls we have and instead we’re looking for the next best thing. That is something I still need to work on as well… I try to have a monthly budget. I am married. So I am honest with my husband about my budget. And I am willing to change it if necessary. But that helps me. I still feel internally guilty with how much I spend on dolls. But it’s not hurting anyone in my scenario. Thanks for sharing your journey! It helps other people that have similar challenges feel less alone.

    • @dollvee
      @dollvee  7 месяцев назад +1

      Wow … I relate to you so much ! Thank you for your honesty. I also suffer from general melancholy and my childhood had a lot of confusing and un happy moments. I love my life too but sometimes just a little new thing here and there helps…. If it’s not dolls … it’s manga or clothes. I’ve learned to curb my appetite and I’m trying to work towards enjoying what I have vs wanting more or letting go and selling what I have to raise money for new things. Moderation is a practice ! Daily ! I appreciate your words.. happy holidays to you and your Dolls and loved ones.

    Thank you so much for this video and for shedding light on the clutter and the debt part of doll collecting. I’ve been going through the balance of organizing my collection. I grew up in a doll collecting home so I’ve always been exposed to constant collecting, and dealing with friends at a young age, explaining stigmatism that comes along with that. I truly enjoy my collection. I am the president of a Doll Club in my community. I am trying to make sense of it all. I believe self check and balance is long overdue in our community at least from my perspective. Hope this makes sense.

    I've collected dolls since I was very young. My father, who was in the Air Force, brought me back dolls from whatever country he had traveled to. Now, in my older years, I have many different dolls, antique, artist, ooak, cloth, bjd's and any doll that I find interesting, artistic, and creative. I set them up in displays, which I change from time to time. I don't hoard, as I have sold dolls that I could part with. I've upgraded over the years. Sure collectors could be considered additive. But I don't spend what I can't afford and no one in my family does without because of the collecting. No climbing over boxes, dolls or the great hoard. There are collectors of just about anything. Who knows why we want more than one of something? But if it brings you pleasure and happiness and no one is being hurt because of it , well, so be it. Have fun! Audie.

    I've enjoyed watching this video very much. Wanted to thank you for making it. I'm old school so I do very little social media. I 100% agree this is a topic a lot don't want to talk about or face in this community. I started collecting in 2012 and by 2016 I realized I had an entire extra room dedicated that was wall to wall billy bookcases of dolls, mostly pullips, custom pullips and monster highs, that I didn't even look at or enjoy. It is true the high is very short lived if you collect obsessively. For some you can even fall into the rabbit hole of a being a completest. I do believe there are healthy ways to collect things. I started to sell my collections. I kept dolls I love and I actually enjoy them now. I still collect dolls and some toys here and there but I buy them every once and a while like as a treat for myself and I buy the ones I want not the whole wave or series. I actually enjoy selling my dolls and toys if I feel I've lost interest in them. I like the feeling that someone else can enjoy them. I exchanged my collecting by making customs dolls, making custom clothes for dolls, building dioramas, restocking or redressing my dolls a hundred times, photographing them and last but not least I love to watch other collect and talk about their collections. Again thank you so much for this video and thanks to all the comments as well it was nice to hear from others on this topic. Appreciate it.

      It felt so nice to read this ! I really want to do the same exchange and I haven’t bought any new dolls now in over 120 days - I did a challenge and passed it and in that time did more restyles and now have a line up of customs to repaint ! I would love to expand my photography skills too. I’m relieved to know that I didn’t feel alone in these thoughts and feelings, and reading your words I completely completely resonate with how it feels good to let go of a doll that you know someone else is going to appreciate! I realize two that my doll spending was taking up space in room in my life financially where I could’ve put that money towards other things I do enjoy like reading, and I was sacrificing even getting a haircut and things like this 😅😅😅 I flipped the script in my head recently too with social media - that I don’t have to get new dolls or certain outfits even - I can enjoy the photographs other collectors have made and keep albums of my fave dolls on Instagram. So now, instead of just scrolling through Instagram, and feeling FOMO - I make it a point to just make albums and I really would love to sell more of my stock Dolls and have instead of 10 Stock Dolls. I don’t handle or pay much attention to, one custom doll that I would play with a lot! Thank you for sharing your story, and for the reinforcement that the choices are making in my doll, hobby are ones that many have had to make!! Of course it’s still hard though because I have a little bit of fear that I’ll miss a doll after I let her go it’s been hard really deciding who to let go!

      @@dollveeSo happy to read your response and that my comment resonated with you. I can say in choosing what dolls to give up was a process and still is. I notice it happen after I was collecting for a while. My tastes in what dolls I wanted in term of their aesthetics or theme changed. I went for dark theme at first and while buying customs I feel in love with mori style. I'm also an out of box collector. I think collecting dolls or anything for that matter and not opening it truly robs you of enjoying it. You'll find that high very short lived because your just looking not really interacting or engaging. But I keep their boxes because I always keep in mind "if need be" I can sell them in the future. Not to get too Debby Downer but one gets old and at some point I will have to think of the future in which I would prefer my collection to go to individuals who will enjoy them after me. Happy to see your customizing though. That was one thing that really got me to slow down and enjoy doll collecting. I customize and sell my dolls although just customizing is wonderful hobby. For me it's so relaxing. I so enjoy the process of creating a new doll or making something new for my doll. Watching videos of amazing people out there giving you tips on how to make things for your dolls is also helpful. You'll be surprise how crafty you are. Again thank you for the all the content and sharing your time. 🙂

    We are two collectors (and a hetero couple - say this just to explain a male doll collector) - we collect and interact differently with our dolls, but we both find joy in them. I prefer to be more interactive (dressing, redressing, photography, dioramas), he loves the character building, storytelling and to an extent, just the visual inspiration. I will "trade out" dolls - and my half of the collection changes often (what dolls are there), he is the acquire and keep forever. He is also a "completionist". And we have two very different spending "scales" - I have less disposable income than he. So I find I have to pick and choose more, maybe that informs my playstyle (getting my money's worth, getting all the dopamine I can) vs. his ability to enjoy "instant gratification" and seek the next dopamine high (he also loves enjoying the collection as a whole). Its a fair balance, I will remind him and get him to slow down and maybe NOT click the buy button and he keeps me from burnout or remind me its okay to keep things (kind of the reverse of a hoarding problem). We both keep it limited to a luxury and make sure we do not go into debt and also not take over the house or become a clutter/safety issue. But this is with ALL hobbies - trains, video games, funko pops, plushies, knitting even (yarn stashes! oh my).
    I think folks who have that risk for addiction will develop doll addictions if they aren't careful. I think social media encourages consumption and excess. I think hobbies can go from a way to de-stress and comfort to escapeism and become a bad "coping mechanism". Covid meant isolation and lack of freedom for folks - they looked for escapes - whether its becoming a plant mom to a jungle, candle making, or collecting. Toys are accessible, click and buy, and delivery. And we are so stressed and life is so hard (economy, climate, politics) - we yearn for the time when those things didn't matter, when we were innocent of them. We want to escape in play and we can even use play as therapy. Dolls are neither good nor bad, but what we make of them.

      I really enjoyed reading this and thank you so much for sharing. Dolls are definitely what we make them and it’s cool to know I’m not the only one making changes in my collection monthly 🤣 I definitely personally have a risk for addiction which yearly I check in with myself to see what I am addicted too and if it’s throwing me off balance ! I’ve definitely learned to let go of the guilt with my doll purchases because I really LOVE and adore all my dolls and doll things. I do feel like if I had less dolls- I could have more valuable time with them. I spend ALOT of time worrying about dust and dusting / cleaning which is relaxing but not the most fun. I think photography is something I am more and more curious about and would like to buy a good camera next! Of course though, there are always dolls I want to buy 😅 it’s so hard letting go of dolls ! I totally was a plant mom during covid 😂 It’s cool to know how different you guys are within the hobby! Again thank you for the valuable perspective !

I now collect mostly modern porcelains that i know have little monetary value but i love them and reborn dolls. Unlike most reborn doll people i see my reborns as my dolls. I do not treat them as if they are real and take them in public. I have always been responsible with my collecting. making sure i save up and if i do use my credit card i can pay it off within a few paydays. I only have 3 dolls, but I do enjoy watching people talk about their collection. I do agree that many collectors just buy out of fomo. im so confused.. i admit i have a borderline addiction. but that's because of my individual actions.. blaming social media or companies isn't going to make things better for myself. i need to take the time and do my own reflecting and change my own actions accordingly.. for example, i've limited the amount of BJDs i add into my collection in a years time. i allow myself one purchase a month for clothes and accessories. it's hard. i don't always stay with those goals and limits, but i'm taking the steps to improve my individual actions. i am confused why social media continues to be the blame for this stuff.. or maybe i missed something 🤷🏽 🎃🎃🦇

    • @dollvee
      @dollvee  9 месяцев назад +2

      One purchase a month is self control! I didn’t mean to blame anyone - I just mentioned thoughts, summarized article facts written by published journalists and cited NDP facts (all are referenced in the description). There’s references I read myself to tend to my own addiction and forwards the end of the video I mention them too. I made the video for anyone who may be struggling with the addiction (like myself) and to see if theres a conversation around doll culture and spending/ collecting. It’s more so how if someone does have a newfound liking to dolls could they be affected by doll culture on social media and I was really intrigued by that Reddit post and what psychologytoday.com had to share. I basically was doing a bunch of research for myself. I didn’t realize that the doll community was just so big on the Internet. Also, didn’t realize that there was a lot of debate on companies, releasing limited edition, dolls, in small quantities and not controlling the scalp or situation. I wasn’t meaning to blame social media. It was more so that there is a lot of social media around Dolls and I definitely got affected and influenced by doom scrolling, creating feelings of FOMO. In terms of spending, that is a persons individual responsibility to control but for myself it’s so hard to control when new dolls get released or I find a BJD account on instagram with dolls I fall in love with.

    Just started recently after years of forbiding myself because of self image etc😅 didn’t know it is a trend though, gonna try to ignore that. I was faszinated by dolls since I was a kid but felt ashamed always. So it’s nice with 30+ to give (almost) not a shit anymore. But I know the struggle with excessive behaviour (with everything I do, this is one of the rather harmless things) and I think the problem are not dolls or doll collecting. You can find that with almost everything and I think we become more aware nowadays that it’s not just drugs and alcohol.

    I feel anything can become an addiction and be a problem. It's all about self-control. Use alcohol as an example. It is known to be addictive and not very good for you but it is still socially acceptable and many people drink without it being a problem. I have been collecting dolls my entire life and i have never gotten myself into debt for dolls (im in debt for unrelated reasons) it is all about self-control and acceptance. Im addicted to shopping in general but i still can control my impulses and not cause a problem. Most of my dolls are second hand and i have had many of them for a long time. I love redressing my dolls and playing with them and i dont see a problem with it.

    What an excellent video! Your passion for dolls all-encompassing (not just collecting but thr sociology behind it) is amazing.
    As a semi-doll collector (Pullips) on amd off for 10 ish years, the FOMO is real bc there are actually dolls I decided to wait on before purchasing but they turned out to be popular and sold out fast.
    And we're not even talking about designer blind box toys which can be more expensive than dolls, are another thing too.
    I think adults (millenials and gen-z) are obssessed with collrcting toys bc they're what we can 'afford' -- we're no longer able to afford housing (ie noy renting, but actually br home owners), so the next best thing to feel like you can afford life ispurchasing 'smaller' things that have value (ie: dolls, designer toys, designer blind box toys, sneakers, etc)
    Your video was so good it got me thinking ❤

      You are so insightful - I think you’re completely right!! It’s so hard to get approved for loans for some people- this economy has been insane since covid.. collecting cool stuff is just so accessible and feels good in the moment.
      this creator, who creates really relatable content around gaming and he also collects anime figures: Dino Cornel! He has this one post about how adults are living their childhood dreams because they can afford it!! also that we are at a age when we don’t care if people make fun of our hobbies. And that they don’t even really get to enjoy all the things they spend money on because that free time is limited when we have to work and parent.
      I’m glad that it got you thinking and I appreciate you taking the time to share !!!

    Oh and another thought I had is that the term kidult is a good expample why people struggle (with themself) in the first place. They rather try to fit into a standard than doing what they really like. We have this idea of a „normal“ „adult“ person and I think a lot of people have difficulties to keep up with that. But we think everyone else does because we are all pretending🥲

    Sorry its 6 months later but I absolutely Loved this topic. I have been 100 percent addicted. I started my journey when my mom was diagnosed with Leukemia and its been an excellent crutch, however its made me broke. Im selling off some of my collection now, realizing how bad putting myself in debt over all of this was. Im also selling off my collection because the doll community I was in was soooo toxic. Warnings wouldnt matter. I think just like when people buy cigarettes they just ignore the warnings. I think doll collectors would too. I think an excess of anything puts humans at risk of addiction. Information on how to break the cycle would be fantastic and groups that were supportive of breaking doll addictions would be very helpful. At this point my friends are not like "maybe you should think about this purchase." They are buy buy buy. So resources and groups would be very helpful.

    • @dollvee
      @dollvee  3 месяца назад

      We are in this together !! Don’t buy !! More so like …. Refine ;) - I definitely have had some credit card bills that have stressed me RIGHT OUT in this hobby and I wasn’t being a good friend in the doll community flaunting all the dolls I bought hap hazardly. Now I only buy doll clothes and no new dolls. I’m selling a lot of my collection too! Slowly … it’s important to ease into next stages of doll hobbying! Going cold turkey is hard too I think and selling off too many at once could also be stressful. It’s important to know we are human as well and sometimes retail therapy was better than paying a psychologist - personally I always felt threatened and unsafe with therapists and dolls made me safe. Now too many of them has me feeling unsafe and uncomfortable so I’m not buying any new dolls unless I’ve already sold 2. So it’s two out and one in or even just 2 out and none in. Of course we love our hobby and it’s helped us a lot mentally but there is toooo much FOMO in the community and that’s the one thing I don’t like about collectors mentality. I wish you the best on your de hauling journey. Taking photos of dolls I realized is one of my favorite things and I have a list on my phone of dolls I am planning to keep and ones I am going to sell. The list sometimes changes but the goal is to sell at least two dolls a month this year. I know I can do it !! Addiction is real and I’m trying my best to acknowledge my own addictions!

    I found this video interesting. Are you aware there are cultures such as the Japanese who have a holiday that celebrate dolls? I understand you didn’t coin the term kidadult. I’m not a kidadult just because I buy and love dolls. I work, I take care of my adult responsibilities. I do not consider my doll hobby as childish. It brings me joy. What’s so childish about experiencing joy? Any thing and I mean anything can become an addiction when trying to fill a void.

    I don't agree with this video. People should collect what makes them happy, there is nothing wrong with collecting dolls so to try to make it into some type of 'illness' is wrong. How is it hurting anyone? There is a difference in hoarding and collecting. Not all doll collectors get hundreds of dolls, some only have a handful of dolls. Overspending, hoarding and obsessions can apply to anything, not only dolls. Why try to turn it into some type of psychoanalytic thing? Would this also apply to stamp collecting, or antique collecting, or shoe collecting? No. So why make doll collecting into a problem when it's not and brings happiness to a lot of people. To say that there should be a warning and disclaimer to this is just wrong and is turning something that brings people happiness into something negative.

      Thanks for your feedback- not sure if you watched the video from start to finish, my only intention was to seek out anyone who related to my feelings that I shared with the redditor I referenced. A few people came out with your same reaction who I’m not sure watched the video in entirety. I think the doll hobby saved my life in many ways and is highly enjoyable and positive - on a personal note, it has its own dark sides for myself. Everything is open for debate, I never said : there *should be disclaimers* I asked : should there be? - you don’t think there should. And I think there should be more media on saving or being resourceful, on doom scrolling. I didn’t say all doll collectors get hundreds of dolls? You’re adding context to my video that is not there at all. I also agree there is a difference between hoarding and collecting, but there is a fine line and a balance that I *personally* experience. This video helped me to gain perspective for myself and now I am on a path of saving for other goals like travelling. I realize I don’t need *more* and that many other collectors went down the same path as me already, as I’ve researched on social media. Personally Doll collecting was a wonderful hobby then sort of a mental illness like a disease. The title of the video is a question, not a statement.

    • @caiteyullah5143
      @caiteyullah5143 8 месяцев назад

      @@dollvee ok you said 'should there be' not there should be, but I was referring to the suggestion rather then anything else. Everyone has their own experiences, but I think that by sharing experiences like this it makes other people feel negative about a hobby that they really enjoy. I was simply sharing my experience and my point of view. I do find on you tube that everyone agrees with all the videos and messages and personal experiences of others. I think everyone should be able however to express their views even if it's not agreeing with someone's point of view. I did watch the video from start to end and it started off well, saying that doll collecting can be seen as a hobby for some rather than a situation where people collect huge amounts of dolls which can cause them financial difficulties and I can see how it could become a hoarding situation. For me, doll collecting isn't a hoarding situation of hundreds of dolls, I have a handful who I think the world of and have helped me through some incredibly difficult times. They bring me comfort and company when I've felt most alone. I consider it more of a hobby rather than collecting. The part of the video I disagreed with is just how the focus was only on doll collecting, but situations like hoarding, financial difficulties, and obsessions can come with anything, some people compulsively buy clothes, or shoes, or handbags, or furniture etc to the point that they become hoarders and it leads them into financial difficulty. Hoarding of anything is an illness when people take it too far, I just think that this can apply to anything, not only dolls, but the video was specific to doll collecting. That's my view and that's all I was trying to put across. I just found the title quite negative 'is doll collecting a disease?' that implies something negative rather than something that is positive for many people. I think it could have been rephrased to say something at the end like 'for some' or 'when it's taken too far' or ' is compulsive collecting a disease?' rather than referring to only dolls or giving it a blanket approach.

    • @dollvee
      @dollvee  8 месяцев назад +2

      @caiteyullah5143 7 месяцев назад +2

      @@dollvee All I'm saying is that the title 'is doll collecting a disease' it's very negative and very strong words. A disease is a very negative way to describe a hobby which brings happiness to so many people. Diabetes is a disease, so is cancer, TB, HIV, cholera, ebola etc. There are mental diseases too such as OCD, depression, sczophrenia, bipolar, etc, but doll collecting is not a disease. If someone collects dolls because it helps their depression for example, then depression is the disease, not the doll collecting. There are many reasons why people collect dolls, and not all of them have a disease, for some it's just an enjoyable hobby. I don't believe it's a disease, Compulsive collecting on the other hand, which can refer to anything, is a disease because it's compulsive, like Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), that's why I made reference to the term compulsive collecting, if it's going to be described as a disease. At the end of the day everyone has their own opinion and perceives things differently. I'm merely giving my perception, I'm not questioning your intention.

    As someone who was excited to recently discover your content and give you likes and views on multiple platforms, I feel completely disappointed, shamed, and downright alienated. This video is so rife with fallacious statements and unfair assumptions my head is spinning.
    You are completely missing the point that over consumption is a widespread cultural issue and ultimately the sickness, not the hobby of dolls in itself. Shopping addiction and any related self destructive behaviors such as hoarding or negligence of responsibilities exist everywhere, in every hobby. Fashion, makeup, video games, crafts, books, home decor, ect. If it is currently being sold in a store or online you can bet it is being over consumed and people are going into needless debt. A problem you are experiencing, along with the handful of individuals whose testimonials you've collected, is a shopping addiction. In addition, your case is extreme. But you've projected your own experience onto others and attacked an innocent hobby that is already heavily stigmatized.
    Now that you've "seen the light" on the errors of your ways you have behaved rather boldly. You publicly called out other RUclipsrs in the community. You stated that parents who buy toys for their own enjoyment as "hoarding money for themselves." assuming they are somehow neglecting their children of something. How do you know this to be the case? You're calling out people for spending large amounts of money on bjd as if by virtue of simply owning them and sharing online there a damaging or brainwashing others into a deceptively expensive trap. So what if someone can afford a $500 smart doll for their child? You literally have a thumbnail on a video stating "My $20,000 Pullip Collection." huh?
    You continue the assumptions that other RUclipsrs whose picture you used as an example are "potentially swimming in credit card debt." Do you know their personal finances? You glance over the follies of social media in itself saying doll collecting is somehow what is dangerous. Social media is driving consumption to dangerous levels in all areas and industries. But you are vilifying individual people, not the platforms themselves ,while you even monetize your own content on those very platforms.
    You say there is a problem with youtubers selling their collection, again posting pictures and making examples of other specific individuals. hmmmm. Say you decided to downsize your collection. You go to sell a doll on ebay only to discover it has grown in value as they often do. I hope you only sell it for exactly how much you bought it for and not a penny more after calling so many people out. I agree scalpers suck, but they are everywhere, they weren't invented by the evil, dangerous doll community.
    Not everyone who collects dolls has unresolved childhood trauma. You described other adult collectors, your VIEWERS, as being jealous like children and unable to control making a purchase. To add insult to injury you start to backtrack towards the end of the video. I think this is the point wherein you start to realize your own hypocrisy and are trying for some damage control. After all the shaming it comes off as disingenuous.
    If the evil, manipulative influencers you've called out are causing damage to the community and promoting unhealthy consumption, why did you go on live last night to share your own recent haul?
    That was less than 24 hours ago. I regrettably watched the whole thing. Like I said earlier I really liked your content.
    Your channel is full of purchases, hauls, and all the things you equated to the sickness of doll collecting. Do you plan on demonetizing all of that "dangerous" content? Because if you do profit from them you are profiting from what you claim to be sickness and sick people. And that would be wrong, wouldn't it?
    You said on your live stream yesterday you want to do RUclips as a career. In your case I hope you are successful then, because soon you will be too old to return to stripping. And since you shared on video on the internet where anyone can see, including future potential employers, that you are a former adult entertainer it may be tricky to find a job.
    And do not mince my words. I would never shame or disparage someone who has to do sex work a a means of survival. People have bills to pay and mouths to feed. No one HAS to sell their body to buy dolls. That was your choice. Not a single influencer or member of this community forced you to do that.

      I receive you in the sense of your shame and alienation and I do know that this style of content may be triggering. Personally I myself am triggered by my own new perspective and I sit also in a sense of shame.
      ---
      You are completely missing the point that over consumption is a widespread cultural issue and ultimately the sickness, not the hobby of dolls in itself.
      ---
      A: You are absolutely right. Overconsumption is an issue. I just binged watched a tv show the last two days. It’s not exactly "healthy” but for me, it distracted my shame of the debt I realized I really am in.
      ---
      Shopping addiction and any related self destructive behaviors such as hoarding or negligence of responsibilities exist everywhere, in every hobby.
But you've projected your own experience onto others and attacked an innocent hobby that is already heavilv stigmatized.
      ---
      A: I by no means meant to attack this hobby. I will be involved in this hobby until I die. I’ll always go and look at Sanrio stuff in stores. I’ll always catch myself “doom scrolling” content around dolls. Just yesterday I spent on hour making folders of my favorite Pullip Doll photos I have recently seen, on instagram.

      Now that you've "seen the light" on the errors of your ways you have behaved rather boldly. You publicly called out other RUclipsrs in the community. You stated that parents who buy toys for their own enjoyment as
      "hoarding money for themselves." assuming the are somehow neglecting their children of something. How do you know this to be the case? You're calling out people for spending large amounts of money on bjd as if by virtue of simply owning them and sharing online there a damaging or brainwashing others into a deceptively expensive trap. So what if someone can afford a $500 smart doll for their child? You literallv have a thumbnail on a video stating "My $20,000 Pullip Collection."
      --
      A: The hoarding comment for parents was a meant to be a witty joke, if I’ve offended anyone with that. I am sorry. It’s my own joke - as I literally have toys hidden from my own child. As I literally have bought more toys for myself than my own child.
      ----
      A: My reference to other RUclipsrs is not to call them out - they were examples of my perspective on doll collecting in the online community.. I actually really love and respect all doll and toy collectors on RUclips and I wish them nothing but success based on any topics they decide to discuss, or videos they want to produce. Referencing them was to support them. I watch the videos as research. I also stated in my last live stream that I think it’s great that RUclips will go out of its way to show me channels that contain doll content even if those channels only have 300 subscribers. The RUclips algorithm is really good in that way, but may be potentially dangerous on the days I feel FOMO. I am in the cheering corner though for all content creators around Dolls. I want to be clear on that.
      ----
      A: I genuinely do not believe that any doll collectors are trying to brainwash anyone. In fact, I am completely jealous of anyone who has an income that can afford the amount of ball jointed dolls that they do. I hope that creators like pink doll never stop putting out content.
      ----
      A: As for my video titled $20,000 pullip doll collection, I’m actually quite proud of that feat as I worked my butt off to liquidate my entire crystal stock inventory to afford such a thing in such a short amount of time. It’s really not the best thing to be proud of but at the time I was extremely happy, as I had fallen in love with Pullip. And looking back it’s quite materialistic. I am materialistic however. I love fashion so much- and it’s great to see it on dolls in my house vs me, because I don’t have as much youth for dressing myself up like I used to. I’m trying my best to find the balance though, hence releasing this video, I’ve been feeling this way for a while. But yah: I wanted to feature a huge amount of Pullip Dolls displayed without touching each other, I wanted to show a grand collection that I personally paid for. Yes. It seems vain with this video I released yesterday. However, there is a video of someone’s $10,000 adult anime figure collection and I go and watch that video every few months. I think it’s great that the person who made that video took the time to collect those figures and show them to the world, and I wanted to share my own inspiration with that, regarding Pullip Dolls. I could’ve titled it without the dollar amount, but I included the dollar amount as a business move because I saw other RUclipsrs doing it. Did I have a goal to buy $20,000 worth of Dolls? No I didn’t. Every time I got a big paycheque from selling crystals. I just dropped it on Dolls. I ended up calculating it at the end.
      ---
      A: If any parent is willing to spend that amount of money on their child, or a child, wants to buy themselves some of such an amount that is $500+ I think that that is great I have absolutely zero judgements on that. My son literally just bought himself an oculus that is $600 and he is 11 years old. With his own money. I have zero problem buying my son something that he wants if I can afford it and he deserves it. I see that you completely missed the point that I was trying to prove, I was stating that there are two ends of the spectrum - comparing children collectors to collectors like Starlight Vega on instagram. The main premise of this entire video is that this hobby is SO huge now, and that there are a wide range of people within the hobby as well as content around the hobby.

      Not everyone who collects dolls has unresolved childhood trauma.
      --
      A: I never said that everyone does? I said my own trauma is what I decided to face to help myself.
      --
      You described other adult collectors, your VIEWERS, as being jealous like children and unable to control making a purchase. To add insult to injury you start to backtrack towards the end of the video. I think this is the point wherein vou start to realize vour own hypocrisy and are trying for some damage control. After all the shaming it comes off as disingenuous.
      If the evil, manipulative influencers you've called out are causing damage to the community and promoting unhealthy consumption, why did vou go on live last night to share vour own recent haul?
      --
      A: I never said anyone was evil or manipulative. I don’t think anyone in the doll community is evil or manipulative. Maybe the CEO’s of companies at times. I shared my own haul because I believe in the doll hobby and I always will and I want to continue plugging pullipstyle because Mike is a really admirable person who is an Angel to the Pullip doll community. It’s ironic the back to back production and I stated that in my live. It does seem like I generalized all adults as being jealous and I did compare us to children - because of the term “kidult” - you are right in the sense that, that was ignorant. Not all adults are kidults and adults do not buy dolls out of jealousy. But I have. And I do. And that was a projection definitely. I wanted to be funny - maybe make comedy of the fact that adults can actually just go and spend money when children can’t usually. I do believe consumerism has FOMO/ jealousy rooted within all of us as consumers, I do see how it looks like I targeted adult toy collectors and made them out to look immature. For that, I do apologize. As for backtracking towards the end of the video I’m not too sure where you mean this. It seems you have a psychological assessment of my intentions, and I will tell you that my only intention was to share that I believe that this hobby has a lot more to it than meets the eye, especially for my own self. For the references that I shared for anyone who may have a problem I read them myself, and they helped me. I replied in that Reddit post, and it also helped me to read the comment section. I might’ve come off as fake to you, but I genuinely want every doll collector who relates to this video, or is even triggered by this video to feel seen and heard by other doll collectors.

      I feel that I got this response earlier from someone else who did not watch the entire video from start to finish. It’s very clear that I was not intending to shame anyone, if anyone feels ashamed or triggered by this content, that is something they have to confront. Personally, I reiterated my own overwhelmed feelings within my own personal journey and I cited published articles and social media presence to support my claim to the original motif of this episode. This was meant to be a in depth research to the notion of this hobby potentially being damaging to our mental, emotional or financial health VS. It’s intended purpose to supply our need for creative world building. This video was meant to pose the question, do we not monitor our spending within the hobby? And if we don’t, how does it affect our feelings within the hobby itself?
