I felt way too seen when Tendi was offered her a science position and she immediately said "Like Jadzia Dax!?" and the doctor responded with "What? No! Like Spock!"
Okay; you probably already know this, but spray-on sealant is a must for anything involving body paint, lest the paint get everywhere. It's gonna be especially important if you wear body paint to a con. Homestuck cosplayers became infamous at cons specifically because most of them were new to cosplay and body paint, didn't use sealant, and proceeded to get paint absolutely everywhere.
"Jessie briefly interrupts a gleeful analysis of the show's layers to get hot & bothered over a naked Cerritos while accidentally not wearing pants because Orion body paint" That might be a metaphor for about half the reason why I love Lower Decks
I loved the fact that when Billups’ mother was trying to have him lose his virginity, he was provided with a man and a woman. No heteronormative assumptions there!
As a kid who watched the original Star Trek (when it came out) I have to say, your cheerleading of Lower Decks has gotten me back into the trekkieverse, thanks.
My favourite recurring joke is the fact that the Federation deals with so many evil supercomputers that they had to build an entire prision compound only for them.
The Cerritos stripping it's outer hull to save the other ship from crashing into the planet was definitely one of my favorite badass star trek moments. It was intense and thrilling and all to save interplanetary relations as well as everyone on the other ship.
I adored Lower Decks. I can’t wait for season 3 . I’m also liking Prodigy very much. I love you for standing up for Discovery… I am still not a fan, but you bring me to balance about it. Your passion for Trek makes me genuinely happy and makes me want to be more supportive to all fans. So thank you for your passion and positivity. I also loved the episode on a Klingon ship A Vulcan ship And the cerritos And the gag at the end with the borg gave me the giggles so bad.
Same here re: the borg scene. It kept looping around to be hilarious again and nobody in the room could explain why, but we all started laughing again at the same time.
Idea for LD season 4: while visiting Starfleet Academy, newly-promoted LtJg Tendi is recognised and approached by an enthusiastic cadet, voiced by Jessie Gender, who has apparently read all her mission reports. She asks to get a picture together before going on her way.
0:40 You truly embody the spirit of Lower Decks. Edit: 20:05 That transition left my head spinning, but then again, us trans folk _do_ know a thing or two about stunning transitions. 💙
As of writing this comment, I’ve only seen the first two seasons & it’s making me want to hop onto the bandwagon even more than I already have. On an unrelated note, I can’t get over how chaotic Tendi is. Somehow this joyful chocolate muffin got the most laughs out of me than the more loud & eccentric personalities like Mariner & D’Tan.
I have a CONSTANT tug of war over what my favorite Kurtzman era Trek shows is. Prodigy is adorably charming. Picard/Discovery are at the same time depressing and unabashedly hopeful. Then there's this show. How tf can I be THIS invested in these characters after only 7.3 hours? And how tf can we keep getting this level of quality week to week? It truly is an amazing time to be a Trek fan
About Kirk and Spock, I always thought that in-Universe they would be remembered as sort of legendary heroes, the way we remember WW2 figures today. The show kind of proves that.
I'm right there with you loving the optimism of this show, and all the legit love thrown into it. As a composer I get to work on a bunch of projects, and that feeling you get when the whole team loves what they're doing is both intoxicating and rare. I hope the team making Lower Decks gets to make as many seasons as they want. Show's rad.
I'd never seen an episode of Star Trek before starting Lower Decks. The only things I knew were general concepts and references that I picked up from spending too much time online (and from briefly watching TBBT way back when). I knew about Star Trek, but I'm not a fan of the "very serious hard sci-fi" kind of genre so it never really spoke to me. But I do love a good comedy show with strong character writing and a lot of heart. And Lower Decks is an incredibly good comedy show in its own right. Over the course of these first 2 seasons it became one of my absolute favourite shows, but beyond that I'm also really glad it's provided me an "entry point" into the Star Trek universe. I'm actually curious about what other Star Trek is out there now! So I might start watching some of the other stuff soon.. If I figure out what a good place would be to start for a newcomer like me. So yeah, I loved watching your reviews where you come at it with all of this Star Trek knowledge (and provide insight in the 100s of jokes and references that completely went over my head) but I just wanted to add my own experience that even without any of that background I'd say it's still very much worth watching.
My favorite live action star trek series is ds9 but it's very different from the original series or the next generation. My absolute favorite star trek episodes are both in ds9; "Past Tense" S3E11&12 and "Far Beyond the Stars" S6E13. "In the Pale Moonlight" S6E19 is incredible Whatever series you go with, I hope you have fun!
The first season is quite bad for like all the star trek shows and then they pick up and get better. The original series The first series is old and can be hard to watch now. Star trek TNG The next generation is the show that have most referenses in lower decks so it can be something to start with. The first season have a story telling a little bit to true to TOS. DS9 have is the show many more hard sci-fi nerds like. And have more of an overarching story than the other series. Voyager is about a ship lost in the delta quadrant. A lot of theck bable and have a little bit a problem with the combination of the old style episodic nature and the overarching story. Enterpise is aboaut the story before all the other shows. When humanity first explore outer space for real and take contact with various ailiens. It have longer arch with stories with bigger conflicts with ailens races. Discovery is the new series where the forth season just started airing. It's quite bad at respecting cannon both story wise and visual/estetic. The acting is better than in any other shows even if the stories not always hits. Then there is a bunch of movies....
@@butternutsquash6984 I wanted to a while ago, but the sexism was too strong for me to get into. So I'd rather watch stuff I'm into :) Might give it another chance at some point, though. I realize that it was far ahead for its own time, but being a non binary black femme in today's society it's a bit rough.
its really not easy being green here's hoping 3rd season will cover more of Rutherford's story, and finally make Tendiford canon PLEASE I NEED IT, I'VE BEEN GOOD!
🤔 It just occurred to me that Lower Decks isn't just about Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, and Rutherford, but also the bridge crew on the Cerritos in relation to more famous bridge crews on more well-known starships, which are on more well-known missions. Captain Freeman and her bridge crew are Lower Deckers to them! 😆
Yes. "Here we are..." and closer to the end of a strangely momentous year; even slightly lax, a little slow, and mostly almost incredibly tragic. Heart to you for how far you have come, all of your accomplishments. Perhaps this is terribly parasocial, but it remains true that you have brought a serious population of the insulated, isolated, and likely lonelier groups of online individuals good comedy and even greater company with your coverage of numerous, deep topics.
Parasocial relationships don’t have to be a bad thing. They can be genuinely enriching to a lot of people, in a lot of genuinely positive ways. It only really becomes an issue when you start thinking of it as a two way thing, it starts replacing real life relationships, or if you feel like you are “owed” something from the creator. It’s often used as an insult, but parasocial is a neutral term.
@@Donnagata1409 I wouldn't attribute that to being a non-native speaker. I don't think the term existed prior to the recent social media use. I could be wrong, and I'm definitely substituting "I hadn't heard it" for "no general audience is familiar with the term", but I would not use the word offline and expect it to be understood. (I'm also 40, which makes me feel like a non-native speaker of online culture most of the time.)
(I know this video is a year old, but I just finished season 2, so it just came off my "later - spoilers" list.) One thing I love about how they portray Mariner is that she struggles with feeling like she needs to be the one to take the big heroic action, but when her friends end up saving the day, she isn't threatened or jealous, she's happy for them and proud of them. Being a glory hog would be consistent with what we know about her insecurities (and modeling herself after Kirk...), but this tells us that something more nuanced going on. Abandonment issues can totally make someone afraid to rely on other people and/or feel responsible for everything, and (to me) that is a lot more interesting than just wanting the spotlight to soothe a fragile ego.
Admittedly given how often TNG Era cliffhangers had quick and anti-climactic resolutions, I am somewhat worried that the ending to the season will be resolved almost immediately as a clerical error or some other simple resolution, even if the the Pakled/Klingon storyline continues.
I know that Shaxs coming back did lower the stakes a bit… and I agree… but ultimately I didn’t care because I need my bajoran security daddybear on the show, dammit! 😅
I personally want more of the Kzinti guy. I mean, he doesn't even get a name, but I'm excited every time I see him, because it means that my favourite race of sassy, man-eating cat people are cannon to Star Trek again and thus so is the crossover to the Nivensverse that they represent
One thing about Lower Decks that I liked is that while it did seem to roll back to a status quo in the beginning, it did not ignore that it had been disrupted at all like some other shows have done. Though I'd say one of the highest praises I can give it is that it made me want to see the other shows and listen to others talk about said shows. Never would have found this channel without Lower Decks, and that's one of its best points!
Joke's on you, I needed something to watch/listen to while I did the dishes. Anyway that bit about crewmates wearing a hijab sparked an old memory from TNG where Ensign Ro wasn't allowed to wear her Bajoran earring (can't recall the specific cultural significance of it at the moment) while on duty and I remembered that bothering me as a kid and not understanding why. So basically glad that policy got canned at some point. Especially as Worf always had his bandoleer thing.
I agree with this 100%. I unabashedly love this show. I'm so glad it avoided the dreaded sophomore slump suffered by so many shows in their second season. This season was a step up from an already good first season, with great character moments, great plots, deep cuts, plus humour that really works and is never cheap. It has been a long time since I have felt such an exhilarating punch-the-air moment of awesomeness from Trek as when the Cerritos crew stripped their hull plates and saved the Archimedes. Seriously, I tear up just thinking of it, it was brilliant. I'm really looking forward to season 3, and to Jessie's insights to those episodes. With or without pants.
I have loved star trek ever since I first saw it back in the 70s. But this is the first version that I have ever loved so unreservedly and with my whole freaking heart. And for me, at least, your reviews are an inextricable part of that experience. I want a DVD set of each season with your reviews following each episode. Thank you.
This show has definately given me something to look forward and I'm super excited for season 3 too. I'm not as familiar with old trek but I definately got major tos vibes too from the 2nd season (good to know it wasn't just me lol.) I did love Mariner's arc in particular and I think the setbacks were probably part of why, so many shows do portray forward progress all the time but relapses happen and it's nice to see on screen.
I'm the same way with older trek, ESPECIALLY when they reference the animated series from back then so it's a boon from the online community that they can almost instantly specify those references that escape us newbs. Et Al the Giant Spock skeleton in s2e1? I def. love Lower Decks and yeah, call me out for having a huge crush on D'Vana Tendi too!
30 minutes is absolutely *not* too long a review of Lower Decks. I would literally watch an in-depth review of each individual episode from you. You pull out so much that I totally missed, and I love it!
Lower Decks accomplishes so much for me. I think that it really stands out because its stablemates thus far have been underwhelming. We love to see the character development, the constant payoffs of plot threads, the drama and action - it is in such stark contrast to Discovery. Discovery seems to constantly let down on the story telling. Dialogue is often very cringe, things happen that just feel contrived and vapid, and moments that are clearly intended to be dramatic feel so hollow because the show hasn't done the work to make me feel anything, instead it just lights up a big neon sign that says "this is a sad moment, feel sad" or "this is an epic moment". Disco really excels in just a few ways, mostly effects and set design. Watching episode 1 of Disco S4, I'm constantly blown away by the cinematography. They really nail so much of the technical aspects of the show, but there is no art to it. At the end of season 1 when Shaxs died, I actually felt sad. The character had earned his place as one that I would miss if he were no longer there. Most, if not all of the characters in Lower Decks have. I can't say the same for almost anyone in Discovery. I don't know the names of most of the bridge crew, they're mostly background noise to me. When they are present, they're seemingly just a bunch of teenagers that have somehow found their way onto the bridge and no one told them to go away. Burnham seems to be maturing a bit, but her being captain feels odd to me still. Lower Decks, in contrast, has Captain Freeman who, although there are often jokes at her expense, feels like a captain. She makes decisions in a way that I would expect a captain to. She has experience dealing with things and although Beckett likes to portray herself as a world-weary person and butts heads with her mom, we find that the captain is often times still the one in the right, and Beckett had a lesson to learn. Burnham in contrast is argumentative and undiplomatic with almost everyone at times, she never seems to consult any of her officers for anything or really communicates with any of them in any meaningful way, she doesn't delegate, and just generally still acts very much like a junior officer, with occasional moments of celerity. When Pike left Discovery, I felt sadness, because his was the only character that brought anything to the show for me. He felt right, and while sometimes his dialogue would have that patented Disco cringe from time to time, the actor *really* sold the character and rose above the really bad writing in a way that no one else on the show does, except for maybe Saru and now the new President in S4, and the admiral guy. Honestly, character names in Disco largely elude me still, even the ones I kinda like, because I have virtually no emotional investment in it. When the show expects me to feel sad, I just feel bad that it's been so poorly executed. I'm embarrassed for them, I guess is how I would describe how I feel. Clearly, there are people who do great work on the show, and I don't want to bash everyone involved, but - my god, the writing still needs a lot of help. This text wall is not to say Lower Decks is perfect. It's much closer to perfect than anything else we've gotten of late, but it still has its moments of weakness and cringe. For example, I'm getting really tired of hearing "starfleet" tossed around so much. "We're starfleet" etc etc. It is getting a little overused, but honestly, that's a minor complaint relative to the real whoppers that exist for Disco, like "that's the power of math" or "I like science" or basically every other line of dialogue that exists in Disco, honestly.
I now love Lower Decks even more than I already did thank you for your review. My biggest current wish ist that tawny newsome, noel wells, eugene cordero, and jack quaid reprise their roles from Lower Decks on a live action show like Strange New Worlds
As someone who has had purple or blue hair for close to a decade now, my shower regularly looks like I host cage fights with Barney the Dinosaur and a pack of Smurfs. Also, working in pants is highly overrated. My recommendation is to avoid whenever possible! I totally agree the embedded references felt far more natural this season. I think they really started to find their groove with how to use them to their best effect. Lower Decks has rekindled so much of my love and nostalgia for Trek. I tend to be serially monogamous to my fandoms. I get really intensely focused and dive so deep that I tend not to have brain space for more than one at a time. Picard was the one that brought me back into Trek because of my love of PStew, but LD reminded me why I love the franchise as a whole. The sheer creativity of it has also helped give me the shot in the arm I needed to start writing again, something I haven't done in far too long. And also connecting with fandom peeps! Many of the friends I had made in previous fandoms have moved on to new ones that I don't share, but reconnecting with them has been great and meeting new people to geek out about Trek with has been wonderful. And now I have to stop watching RUclips videos and get back to my Garashir NaNoWriMo. One big chapter left to write and SO MANY dialogue tags slog my way through!
@@JoelFeila It's the horse sized duck vs duck sized horses argument. Although they are largely peaceful, evolutionarily speaking, smurfs are pack hunters. Depending on whether we take Barney as an approximately human sized dinosaur or theorize that he has been altered in scale much the way dinosaurs in other media have been, there are different answers to this question. At human scale, I would say it would take ~20 smurfs to take out Barney. Depending on tactics and weapons available, it could be fewer. If Barney were scaled up too much, I'm thinking you'd need a proper swarm to achieve victory.
I used to get this when I redyed my hair, but since I started leaving it in for 12-24 hours there’s almost none of it. I’d originally done it to reduce fading over time but I guess the reason why is more pigment is absorbed? I also notice a 6 hour dye soak has more colour leakage when rinsing out, but still significantly less than a 1-2 hour soak.
@@kaitlyn__L I usually leave mine in for about 4 hours or so and get very little fade. The initial wash is the worst... and then a couple weeks of minor purple 'dandruff' as any of it that stained my scalp comes off. I'm WAY less messy than I was when I first started using the blues and purples, but there are definite legacies of the early days in my bathroom.
30:02 Even though his culture requires him to have sex as a prince, Billups would still be asexual regardless of the social demands of his home. Of course, his objections in that episode may have more been about being a starfleet engineer than a king (and it looked like it was played out that way), but still
This Tendi Orion cosplay is terrific. I still maintain a dark green wig would add to the look. But hey, green hair on Jessie, also good. :) I wish we'd get news on when we'll see Lower Decks season 3 and more Prodigy. I thought we were supposed to et more than 10 eps for season 1, then 10 or so for season 2. Whatever way it goes, I'm hoping for more. And now we've gotta wait months for SNW season 2. Good thing there are still four episodes of the Orville season 3 to go.
I feel like the show really started to hit its stride after the Jeffrey Combs cameo. Legit raised the bar for the whole show. Like, "Shit, that was awesome. We should make every episode that good."
I haven’t seen a single episode of Star Trek, and I had no idea what you were talking about the whole time. I loved the video regardless, thank you for it ❤️ your enthusiasm is contagious, maybe I’ll check it out 🤔
I gotta say, I never gave this show a chance because the thought of a Star Trek comedy show wasn’t that appealing to me. But after seeing someone who clearly has a love for all the eras of Star Trek gush about it, I gotta give this thing a chance.
oh i also love the character development. Beckett even though a badass, is emotionally immature, but she matured towards the end. I love that she was saved by jen. Boimler a bit of a running joke, becomes more capable. in season 3, I scretly suspect it will be revealed that Tendi was a badass pirate leader, which was why she punched her cousin in the stomach while he was trying to say something and why she was chosen for a special forces mission in season 1 and could take out romulan guards with ease. I also liked the reveal that the opptomistic rutherford had something darker that was done to him and i'm really eager to find out more about it next season!
There is something about the way you talked and continue to talk about Star Trek that finally pushed me to check it out. I’m enjoying it and it was during last year I checked it out along with Lower Decks (which premiered on my birthday).
I’m really excited for Season 3, I think it would be really interesting if the bridge crew got a few changeups with what I assume has to be a new Captain. I’m kinda hoping Boimler gets a promotion and becomes a Lieutenant with a new Captain maybe recognising him, or maybe even doing it at Ransom’s recommendation. If they’re a new Captain, I imagine they’ll want to know as much about the crew as possible and we know Ransom is in Boimler’s corner a lot, so I think that would be a really cool way to progress Boimler.
I'm so glad that I'm not alone when I gush about this show, Jessie your enthusiasm and straight up excitement about lower decks reassures me that this show truly is as special as I think it is. we both also agree that Wej Duj was one of the best episodes of Star Trek ever made periodttt.. thank you for always providing insightful and good spirited reviews that breakdown all the episodes so well rarely do the other trek ytubers give such lighthearted reviews without the eventual disdain for "new trek" much love and light young warrior, I'm a big fan..
Trek has been trying to tantalize viewers with scantily-clad Orion girls since basically the very beginning, yet imo Tendi's kindness and optimism makes her more attractive than all those slave girls combined lol.
I really enjoyed how much your pure unadulterated geeky joy came through in this. In a world with so many complicated and difficult things to navigate, it's deeply nourishing to just revel in a totally unrestrained love of something that gives us such a positive vision to be inspired by and aim towards.
Thaaaaank you for this wonderful video. You can somehow put words to the jungle of thoughts I have about this incredible season. I truly feel your love for the show. I watched it with my boyfriend, who did not wach any Star Trek before. Even he loved it (and despite me talking about it for hooooouuuuuurs). And don't get me started on my reaction about cetacian obs. I absolutly freaked out.
The highlight from season 2 for me, was seeing the literal revival of T'ana x Shaxs, and the mother daughter dynamic between Tendi and T'ana. It was a good season and I can't wait to see season 3.
I love all things Star Trek but Lower Decks has quickly become one of my favs. I just love the positivity of it. Long may it continue. (Also your videos are never too long and always a joy to watch). Live Long & Keep Smiling (my version of the greeting lol)
Green Jessie is such an aesthetic, I love it. I would say "why not just wear green trousers, then you don't need to worry about making them green" but I feel like not bothering with trousers and just filming yourself above the waist is weirdly in keeping both with the show you're talking about and the times we live in. Anyway, although I tended to have different favourites and preferences on an episode to episode basis watching through these, I couldn't agree more on the season as a whole, I loved S1 and S2 really just stepped up the game, definitely my favourite of the new star trek series (that I've seen). Looking forward to S3, hopefully I can watch it as it goes out instead of six months later like I ended up doing this time.
I can't say I've liked anything I've seen in Star Trek post Enterprise and I had some real issues with Enterprise, DS9 and Voyager -- poisoning planetary atmospheres, section 31, and so on. That said, I don't have the ability to see this show, but based on the clips, it interests me a lot more than Discovery or the JJ Abrams movies.
I laughed long after you pointed out how the ship is naked..... No elphalba jokes this time, and I agree this is a great show!!! Excited for the next season! Thank you for another wonderful review!!!
Would love to see Jessie and Steve Shives spend 30 minutes or so discussing this because Steve did a video a week or two ago, that came across as him feeling meh about it.
It's been so fun watching lower decks, showing it off to my partner; I'm a long time trek fan, they love animation but haven't watched trek much before, and now they're hooked and keep asking when the next season comes out even though the last one just aired. Love watching these videos full of enthusiasm and love for the show. Even though these kinda videos dont get so many views, it's so awesome to those of us that love this stuff.
100% there with you about Shax. Much as I love the character, it would have been more meaningful for him to stay dead. And yeah, kind of shortchanges Kayshon. This season was very very good. Probably better on the whole than season 1, but I will say, I don't think they topped Crisis Point from last season. That was just fantastic in every way.
I feel like one area they could step up their representation game is disability. They’ve used hellish Captain Pike beep chairs as a punchline three (or is it just two?) times now and no one is using any other kind of mobility aid in the background that I’ve noticed. There’s kiiind of prosthetics rep with Rutherford and the background lady with a VISOR but ehhhh. Discovery has way more different VISOR-esque things but totally different prosthetics too, plus they have their unnamed wheelchair guy extra. Plus think about the possibilities with animation! IMO they’re squandering some opportunities there.
I wish Mr Alggy Rithum would pick up enthusiasm as well as it pick up whining and negativity because if it did the only reason one of your lower decks video's would not be in the top ten would be that it was crowded out by the rest of them. Keep it up lass & on to season 3
I love these long reviews. I love to hear folk talk about things that inspires and fills with passion. I love hearing your opinions and the emotions in your voice when you speak. You're one of my favorite RUclips reviewers
Fantastic writing and presentation for the review, and amazing editing by... Lucien? Lotion? someone give him/her a shout out please. This is a full Lower Deck episode length review, and I enjoyed every second of it.
I still think the backtracking on Mariner/Captain Freeman was doubly intentional. Obviously it was a status quo reset but lampshaded, but also I think there is one more deeper issue to their relationship that they haven't actually addressed which is why the 'fixing' their relationship didn't take. Since the season is over I'll post it in an open comment instead of hidden in replies now. I think Mariner was gene-augmented like Bashir. Captain Tiger Mom wanted her kid to have every possible advantage because she worried maybe it was something she herself lacked that held her back from getting that promotion. A decade of 'you have to be Star Fleet at it's best but also don't stand out too much' would explain a lot about why Mariner rebelled against command path/parts of Star Fleet ideals. Just saying that she got jaded due to Star Fleet bureaucracy/rules seems too little for how much she rebelled. And it would also explain her hyper-competency of being as big a brawler as Ransom but also as great a tactician and potential leader as her mom and also knowing everything and being able to get along with everyone.
Thank you for your wonderful reviews. I finally started watching older Star Trek series because of your reviews. Lower Decks essentially opened the door for me as well. Lower Decks is just such a great show.
Jessie Gender making Tendi Rule 34 a thing intensifies. But seriously, bring on season 3. Prodigy is okay, I'm given too much star Wars Clone/Rebels vibes (especially episode 1 and 2), but with all Trek, the first season is always the one that has a rough start. Lower Decks still has that static show feel that like more than arching Picard and Discovery. I can only hope Strange New Worlds continues the easy episodic nature of old, and if not, that's okay because it still means more Star Trek to binge.
Yes. You point its excellence exactly. IMHO, lower decks is the best Star Trek ever. It couldn't exist without the shows before it but it builds on previous and current shows in a way that expands their narrative while still maintaining separation and space for its own. It's for Star Trek Nerds by Star Trek nerds while being watchable by the norms. Thank you.
Yes I agree with you 100%. i loved the drill episode of all the drills be other star trek movies and shows. I loved the one where they show the lower decks of the other ships, lol the end where they show the lower deck of the Borg cube. Just the whole season two was just great. Lol My theory for one of the season three episodes will be a transfer with Mariner going to a Volcan ship and Boingler, sorry I know I spelled his name wrong, going to a Klingon ship. Then there counter parts coming to there ship, but hey that's just my theory. Lol
lol, no pants? Sounds like good point for a quote, "Mariner: Actually, usually Boimler leaves that one open for me. He has issues with communal nudity. Jet: Well, I'm not him and he's not here." XD
Agree 100% with the entire video, and thank you for sharing it! TNG is where I used to live, in my head, and I'm just so happy and ... comfy, to move between there and the Ceritos as I progress through life.
I"m loving your love letter to the Love Letter to Star Trek. Jessie is the best sort of Trek fan, she can critique the flaws while gushing endlessly. 💞
I’m a white guy so growing up I didn’t notice the lack of diversity in Trek, but now that we’ve seen it so completely in Lower Decks and Discovery it’s really jarring to go back to the old shows. The majority in the background is are white men. I had just always assumed that it was doing better because IDIC is the Trek ethos, but until recently it was slow going. I’m glad (almost) everyone gets to see themselves on screen now like I always got to.
Oh Jessie. You truly are the part of me that go's, " YAY Star Trek!!!" every time its on. Even when you're critiquing it, its with such a pure love that can't be described, only shared with like minded people who get it
I felt way too seen when Tendi was offered her a science position and she immediately said "Like Jadzia Dax!?" and the doctor responded with "What? No! Like Spock!"
"TIME killed Spock II. I merely collected his bones!"- Mike McMahan
And thus the idea for the Moopsy was born.
Yes, this! Jessie, get you some sealant!
So, ( body paint sealant ) in the search box at that online store? -- Nope, I've never worn body paint. So I'm curious.
"Jessie briefly interrupts a gleeful analysis of the show's layers to get hot & bothered over a naked Cerritos while accidentally not wearing pants because Orion body paint"
That might be a metaphor for about half the reason why I love Lower Decks
"D'Jessie Tendi, when she blushed chartreuse," as our Tamarian friends refer to this moment.
Came for the star trek, stayed for the pantsless Jessie
more information than I needed but I am used to it
I am always up for pantslessness
@@davetalley Up for pantless Jessie!

Jessie, I could listen to you talk about Lower Decks for HOURS. Lower Decks deserves it and YOU deserve it!
Diversity! Optimism! Kindness! Brilliant show and brilliant review! Lower Decks!
LOWER DECKS! LOWER DECKS! LOWER DECKS! (jumping up and down)
My favourite recurring joke is the fact that the Federation deals with so many evil supercomputers that they had to build an entire prision compound only for them.
Boimler's censored taint is the reason I focus on Billups in the background, still working while everyone else is banging. Totally ace!
"Booklet, his legs splayed!" 😁
I was born in 1966 and have loved Startrek since I could watch TV. keep up the positive vibes❤
Looking forward to Season 3, I am hoping we get a 4th and 5th Season.
I also loved the episode on a Klingon ship
A Vulcan ship
And the cerritos
And the gag at the end with the borg gave me the giggles so bad.
“Bridge crew are always coming back from the dead.”
0:40 You truly embody the spirit of Lower Decks.
Edit: 20:05 That transition left my head spinning, but then again, us trans folk _do_ know a thing or two about stunning transitions. 💙
Next season, I hope we see the Rubber Ducky Room!
Pantslessness in the first minute, this is going to be a quality video
Show's rad.
Just noticed you commented minutes before me, and since I'm a composer as well, hell I figured worth saying hi-eee!🎶🎶🎶💜
@@mountainharpie Oh nice to meet you! Always great to meet cool people with similar interests.
@@FacemeltingsolosMusic Rad. Rad Indeed 💜🎶🙏🏼\m/
So yeah, I loved watching your reviews where you come at it with all of this Star Trek knowledge (and provide insight in the 100s of jokes and references that completely went over my head) but I just wanted to add my own experience that even without any of that background I'd say it's still very much worth watching.
welcome to the Star Trek universe
My favorite live action star trek series is ds9 but it's very different from the original series or the next generation. My absolute favorite star trek episodes are both in ds9; "Past Tense" S3E11&12 and "Far Beyond the Stars" S6E13. "In the Pale Moonlight" S6E19 is incredible
Whatever series you go with, I hope you have fun!
Start with the original. Everything stems from it. From there, decide what you're interested in (story, ideas, chronology...)
@@butternutsquash6984 I wanted to a while ago, but the sexism was too strong for me to get into. So I'd rather watch stuff I'm into :)
Might give it another chance at some point, though. I realize that it was far ahead for its own time, but being a non binary black femme in today's society it's a bit rough.
I want an episode where Riker clone and Boimler clone get up to some shenanigans that end up getting the originals in trouble
its really not easy being green
here's hoping 3rd season will cover more of Rutherford's story, and finally make Tendiford canon PLEASE I NEED IT, I'VE BEEN GOOD!
@@Tinyvalkyrie410 Very interesting thoughts. I didn't even know the word "parasocial" (English non-native speaker)
It's so sad that Steve Shives somehow can't see any of this.
Good video!
Knowing Lower Decks I won’t be surprised if they poke fun at that.
I really enjoyed season 2 definitely a big step up from season 1 glad I decided to give the show a shot 👍🙂
I know that Shaxs coming back did lower the stakes a bit… and I agree… but ultimately I didn’t care because I need my bajoran security daddybear on the show, dammit! 😅
0:35 this is why you bring the skants.
I personally want more of the Kzinti guy. I mean, he doesn't even get a name, but I'm excited every time I see him, because it means that my favourite race of sassy, man-eating cat people are cannon to Star Trek again and thus so is the crossover to the Nivensverse that they represent
Kzinti ensign's name is Ensign. He hasnt EARNED a halfname or full Name yet.
@@rakaydosdraj8405 Don't Kzinti just have their job descriptions as names? Oh Gods... His name is Ensign Ensign...
Still watching the video, but needed to stop to let you know the auto captions titled episode 9 "weed douche" and I'm here for it
Haha that is literally the best title
@@JessieGender1 they call it "wage douche" in your interview with Mike McMahan, and I'm here for that also
I agree with this 100%.
I'm not as familiar with old trek but I definately got major tos vibes too from the 2nd season (good to know it wasn't just me lol.)
I did love Mariner's arc in particular and I think the setbacks were probably part of why, so many shows do portray forward progress all the time but relapses happen and it's nice to see on screen.
I love this show and you're the reason I watched it. Keep gushing and keep loving what you love!
Matt and Kimolu are Belugas. They are also pantsless.
That would be hilarious.
Even if it was something of a cutaway gag where being in live action was treated as some kind of parallel universe.
What about Mariner showing up in Picard?
Huehuehuehue how prescient of you
I think the Tamarians will get a new metaphor from this season, Tendi gets her pesto. I feel I got mine with this season.
One big chapter left to write and SO MANY dialogue tags slog my way through!
niw i need to know how many smurfs would it take to win against barney
Thanks for the video.

LOWER DECKS! LOWER DECKS! LOWER DECKS!
30:02 Even though his culture requires him to have sex as a prince, Billups would still be asexual regardless of the social demands of his home. Of course, his objections in that episode may have more been about being a starfleet engineer than a king (and it looked like it was played out that way), but still
Jessie -- You could get green pants. Or some sweatpants or lounge pants. But LOL, we support you being comfortable. :) And we can't tell. :)
This Tendi Orion cosplay is terrific. I still maintain a dark green wig would add to the look. But hey, green hair on Jessie, also good. :)
I wish we'd get news on when we'll see Lower Decks season 3 and more Prodigy.
I loved the video regardless, thank you for it ❤️ your enthusiasm is contagious, maybe I’ll check it out 🤔
Lower Decks is great. I want the seasons to be longer, because damn.
I delayed food to see you rant about Lower Decks. It's been my favorite series of 25 ten minute episodes!
I gotta say, I never gave this show a chance because the thought of a Star Trek comedy show wasn’t that appealing to me. But after seeing someone who clearly has a love for all the eras of Star Trek gush about it, I gotta give this thing a chance.
Jessie, it was basically your enthusiasm for Lower Decks that got me to give it a second chance. I’m so glad I did.
oh i also love the character development.
We are not the Borg, but your unique and individual love for this show will be added to our own.
Yes...Yes...YES!
Thank you for letting me hang out and listen to your great observations and thoughts on Lower Decks!
Those horny dolphins were adorable yes, lol. Lower Decks is by far the best trek.
24:50 Sa'vana?
The highlight from season 2 for me, was seeing the literal revival of T'ana x Shaxs, and the mother daughter dynamic between Tendi and T'ana. It was a good season and I can't wait to see season 3.
FALSE GREEN!!! SHE'S WEARING FALSE GREEN!!!
Your videos on The Lower Decks are getting me to rewatch the series. Thank you very much.
Pantless Jessie, Hmmmm interesting.
Good review. Cant wait to see it.
Hope to see you tomorrow night jessie
The Blu-ray of Season One is released here in the UK in just over a week. Really excited. I'm enjoying building up my collection.
I love these long reviews. I love to hear folk talk about things that inspires and fills with passion. I love hearing your opinions and the emotions in your voice when you speak. You're one of my favorite RUclips reviewers
Always love it when you get to talk about Star Trek, thanks for being your positive and idealistic self & sharing your love of this show with us!
Lower decks gave me adult cartoon meets Star Trek and I loved every min of it.
Trust your viewers, you are making this for all of us who love and live Star Trek. 😊❤️
Well, my day just got a whole lot better. Always happy to see you release new videos. And I sympathize with getting green everywhere.
