The secondary hull plating release being only accessible from Cetacean Ops actually makes a weird kind of sense: It's a backup to a backup of a system that's only supposed to be used while in drydock, so the designers probably figured that accessibility wasn't a key concern; they probably never imagined that a California-class ship would have to jettison its entire shell plating to go rescue a starship that was about to fall catastrophically on an alien planet.
Good things. Very good things. More Farscape. More! Naked starships, could be a new design aesthetic. OK, maybe the Y-wing fighters fit that, but I liked those too. If the starship has plenty of hull plating whee it needs it, but is naked... wait, so it's a half-naked starship? A starship with a Speedo? Hahaha....
This episode felt like an absolute classic Star Trek adventure. Jeopardy, a ticking clock, an incredibly risky plan, the whole crew working together, all the great character moments in between, and they even pulled out a dramatic end of season cliff-hanger! Pure Trek!
did anyone else notice the officer on the Archimedes pointing at the Cerritos the same way Boimler was pointing at the Titan in the last finale? They have come a long way from holding out long enough for the rescue to arrive, to BEING the rescue
The show has fucking done it... it's reached the potential for the show I've always wanted... great stakes, character moments, entire crew coming together, two parter cliff-hanger, so many feels and twist ending... this show is truly more Star Trek than the recent live action Trek shows!
And it’s only Season 2! Most other Trek Series have taken until at least Season 4 to get this into their stride. It’s going to be amazing to see how great they’ll be able to get before diminishing returns start kicking in like it usually has tended to by S6-7. Though that said, there’s an argument that three seasons may be as far as they reasonably *can* go without losing the premise of the entire show. By then, it’ll be way too difficult to overlook our heroes still not being taken seriously by the senior staff or promoted to a level that they have lower deckers under them. Especially after the way everyone stepped up hard at the end of this season and will no doubt distinguish themselves further by helping exonerate Captain Freeman.
Their dolphin-centred view of life (use of 'calves', refering to Boimer having a blowhole and being required to kept wet) is neat, especially when they're angry about there being a human-centred piece of ship infrastructure within their area.
It's small but I personally liked how, during Mariner and Jennifer's scene together at the end, when Boimler runs off to tell Captain Freeman that he made the banner Jennifer comments "I like that guy." and Mariner responds "Yeah, he's great." If Boimler did something so silly and childish in season 1 he'd probably get mocked for it, but instead here Jennifer and Mariner seem to just accept it, maybe even finding it a bit endearing.
I am so happy this show exists. Captain Gomez is a lovely callback to the first Borg episode when she spills hot chocolate on Picard. You do such a great job spreading joy and positivity. Your love for Trek really is inspiring. I am so interested in seeing how you like prodigy. Lower Decks is my favorite too.
One of the things I really like about Lower Decks is that the characters are cyclical. They're not static - we've seen all of their character arcs advance over the first two seasons - but they retreat back to their comfort zone at times, as real people often do. Boimler is improving at being a Starfleet officer by leaps and bounds... but he's still kind of a buttkisser. Mariner is getting better at opening up and being honest... but she still defaults to angry and closed-off when stressed. Tendi is becoming more self-reliant, but she's still got a people-pleaser problem. Rutherford... well, is honestly the least developing character due to being the happiest with where he is. But he also overintellectualizes everything.
Apparently it's a new ship, Obena-class. But in the best tradition of Trek, it does look like they made it by taking parts from an Excelsior and Sovereign class together.
@@lorcannagle I'm already spinning headcanons for it - like that it's a way to get fleet numbers up after the Dominion War by combining new Sovereign-class technology with a proven, easier-to-fabricate spaceframe.
@@lorcannagle well that would explain a lot. Until the Sovereign Class ship was revealed, my absolute favorite was the Excelsior Class. I thought this one was spectacular. 🥰
this episode was spectacular- the main plot was incredible and something we've never seen in trek before and god damn the character development and character moments in this one was WONDERFUL (also- it feels like they're setting up a jennifer/mariner relationship, or atleast hinting at one)
I’ve always struggled to get into Star Trek shows (Star Wars guy here) but your genuine excitement when talking about Lower Decks is going to have me take the plunge and check this out. Thanks ❤️
Personally, I like Jeckett better since it's both of their first names. Also, I am so excited that we might see more of Jen with her romantic arc with Mariner, I think Andorians are a super cool and underused species and it will be awesome to see her take an even more prominent role in the series. Super excited for that.
I haven’t been this excited for a next season since Archer and company headed to the Expanse 👍 ….speaking of that, was it wrong to hope there was an aquatic Xindi in the tank with the dolphins ?
I'm going to assume those two dolphins are on some sort of "List" and Starfleet keeps them on a lower tier ship like the Cerritos where they can't sexually harass other aquatic species. Plenty of Xindi on other cetacean ops ships.
Aren't the xindi supposed to join federation only in the 27th century? Also aquatic xindi are freaking big! Uplifted Dolphins are a throwback to the work of sci-fi author david brin though (Dolphins make kick ass pilots!)
@@nickschmucker8836 They definitely wouldn't fit the frenetic pace of the show, although it might have been fun for the guys to ask a xindi a simple question and have him take five minutes of screen time while all the craziness is happening to answer, main reason no way they could be as cute as two beluga whales in Starfleet uniforms.
Also curious on who Rutherford was before his implant. All we know is from episode 1 is that he’s only had it for a week, but no telling how long he’s been on the ship. When he tried different jobs he didn’t know some of the people or the jobs themselves. So could Rutherford have been a very different person before his implant? Could those fighting skills have been muscle memory from before? He could have been a Shax like rebel fighter who got turned into a Mr Rogers like guy
Interesting to note that the implant knows how to defeat multiple borg in hand to hand combat, can perform vulcan neck pinches and generally act as secret agent... all while it's installing updates. Very suspicious. Why would someone place a cyborg spy onboard a cali class ship?
@@matthewrye3156 Sleeper agent? In the red dwarf episode, "back to reality", when the guys were under a group hallucination, Rimmer was supposed to be a special, hand picked agent from the space corps, and his memory was erased and given a new personality so no one would suspect he was on a mission destroy Red Dwarf. Maybe Rutherford is some sleeper agent. Remember Total Recall?
Something to mention about Boimler: I was worried he was going to be killed too. They do have a backup Boimler in his transporter double, and I thought they might kill Boimler prime and replace him with the double.
I love that the the show manages to make this both seem epic without raising the stakes so high that it makes everything that comes after it feel like a let down. But it's really the little moments of this show that are fantastic. The one I caught was when Boimler wakes up he comments about seeing a Koala. That's a callback to the episode in the first season where one of the crew members ascends and sees that the universe is balanced on the back of a giant koala. That implies that Boimler may have almost ascended... or it's just a silly joke.
Exactly! I hope the writers working on the other shows realize that not every story has to have a galaxy or universe sized threat to be epic. Lower Decks truly embodies the heart and spirit of Star Trek at its best and my money is ready if they ever release a Lower Decks movie. I've been ready for a Lower Decks movie ever since I saw what they were able to do with Crisis Point back in S1. Also, I like the idea of Boimler being close to ascending. There are some interesting things they could do with that concept. Think of the Daniel Jackson parodies!
I called it like some weeks ago, i knew that Mariner liked Jen romantically but couldnt express her feelings. This is also great because this lessens the chance of Brad and Mariner being a couple, cant wait to see the vulcan girl next season.
If they explore the romantic angle with Jennifer, it could be an interesting way to introduce the multi-gender nature of andorians (4 or 5 genders I think)
I did love that the first thought of the doomed crew of the Archimedes was that if they hit the planet "it would cause devastation to the planet" rather than "we're all going to die." I know it was a little thing, but I like the fact that this silly comedy show still has that fundamental Star Trek morality at its core.
The bit with Jennifer and Mariner was my favourite part of the episode. No idea why it got to me so much, but it really tugged at my heart. And yes, definitely shipping Jariner here too. Also, I thought it was adorable that Jennifer's spacesuit helmet had little pod things for her antennae.
I think Tendi on the Science track could be amazing, especially if T'Lyn ends up on board. Given Tendi's established flaw in needing people to like her, a sarcastic Vulcan is a perfect foil for her to deal with that (since T'Lyn isn't someone that'll fall for her charm), deal with adversity (since Tendi will have to learn what it means to actually not be the best, not just feel like it), and deal with personality conflict. And for T'Lyn, we see her discomfort in dealing with a hyper-emotional person (to contrast her discomfort south the hyper logical crew of the Sh'Vaal) to see more sides of her. Everyone has talked about how T'Lyn will live with humans but Starfleet (and the Federation) are more than just humans. We've been talking about Mariner/T'Lyn, but I think this might be the way better dynamic from a story standpoint, but this could be a chance to re-do a Tuvok/Neelix style dynamic but in a way that works better and less problematically than other Vulcan/non-Vulcan character pairs like Spock/McCoy.
I've seen a lot of complaints about Discovery and Picard having actual windows on the bridge instead of viewscreens. I appreciate that they're actually giving a solid reason in this episode on why a window would be GREAT to have! Viewscreens can lose power. Windows will keep being windows.
The fact is, I always watched the Trek series long after they were premiered, so I never had to wait for second parts. That's the first time, and I'm not quite sure if my heart will resist the strain!
I am so very sad now. No more episodes for a whole freaking year. 😭😭😭 If someone 2 years ago had said that this was going to be my favorite Star Trek, I would have laughed in their face. Politely, of course. 😆 But this is one of the few shows that excite me to watch right now.
I appreciated that Captain Gomez was still trying right down to the last second. The episode sketched out her command style and personality in a relatively short amount of screen time. I hope the Archimedes shows up again.
Jessie! Go back and rewatch in slow-mo the scene when Rutherford deletes his redundant memories and you'll find 4 new bits they added for us: * New year's eve * Bee in the glass * Finger Trap * Ransom's portrait
I loved the moment where Mariner responds to Billups on the bridge about the final piece of hull plating: "Boimler's got this, give him time!" She didn't have a quip or a joke, just confidence that Boimler will do his job. Felt like real growth for her.
I liked the part where Tendi suggested going to the Rubber Duck Room on the ship, because the TNG ship diagram had a room with a giant rubber duck for some reason on it. Same way with Cetacean Ops. Maybe one day we'll see the Sports Car that's in the Hangar Bay. Or the Rodent of Unusual Size.
Considering how much stuff runs software on the ship, I'd guess the rubber duck room is a room full of various rubber ducks to use for rubber duck debugging
The solution to take off the outer plating of the ship to navigate through a magnetic sensitive debris energy field is a very Trek thing... I was genuinely impressed whoever thought this up for this show
I think First First Contact is a reference back to the first episode of Lower Decks. It was called Second Contact, and was a humdrum standard job - get them connected to the subspace network, find out the good places to eat... But this time because of the damage to the Archimedes, Freeman and her crew get to do their first first contact mission. I love the way that Rutherford and Billups and Tendi and T'Ana have this friendships and respectful recognition of their skills going on - between this and Ransom's recognition of Boimler last week shows that everyone (except maybe Mariner) is putting in their dues, so to speak. They're good Starfleet officers making their mark and growing in their careers. Other highlights: Definitely got the vibe of possible romance between Jen and Mariner, loved the dolphins, the running joke about Captain Freeman day, Sonya Gomez being understanding of the Ensign who tripped on the bridge... EDIT to add. If we're brainstorming relationship portmanteaux names for Jen and Mariner, how about Ma'reyan? Pronounced like "Marion"
Mike McMahon said that the Archimedes is an Obena-class starship. And Gomez was in two episodes. Her debut in Q Who and she was also in Samaritan Snare, the episode that introduced the Pakleds. And she spilled hot chocolate on Picard, not coffee 😂. Ok I’m done.
So, one thing in this episode that kinda came to me as I was watching it was about Captain Mom refusing the promotion made me think about Kirk's monologue to Picard in Generations. "Don't let them promote you. Don't let them transfer you. Don't let them do anything that takes you off the bridge of that ship. Because while you're there...you can make a difference." Freeman onboard the Cerritos can make a difference.
All I can say is, I see Starfleet Security is continuing its tradition of disappointing me because they continuously fail at their job whether it’s redshirts incapable of keeping intruders off their ships or useless on away missions or figuring out they’re being lied to or tricked by some vast conspiracy………they are really just not giving me much confidence, I think Starfleet needs a serious overhaul of its security divisions 🤔😛 Also Seán Ferrick is gonna absolutely lose it that his dream of cetacean ops has come true!!
This was a great episode seeing the entire crew work together to remove the outer plating gave it an epic feel. I'd like to see Gomez as the Ceritos Captain temporarily next season and a story arc about who framed Captain Freeman the truth about Rutherford's implant.
Gosh, WOW! What an episode to make me want more! How dare it be the season finale!! Starting this show, I never thought i'd be so attached to these characters, never mind get so engaged in an almost entirely dramatic episode. The tension was incredibly well done and it all worked so well because of how much time we've had to get to know all of these characters. The dolphins were hilarious with their blatant attraction to Rutherford, it really got to show off how much Rutherford and Tendi care about each other and the ship, I'm really curious to find out what's going on with Rutherford's implant, and I'm constantly caught off-guard by how much the bridge crew act so friendly towards each other and their officers. Boimler has had so many good moments this season and him just telling Mariner why she's upset with her mum was another great one (not to mention all his Captain Freeman day antics were consistently funny) One thing this episode and the previous one has proved to me about this show is that it's remarkably good at getting you invested in characters quickly by giving them humanity and kindness where others wouldn't. Jennifer and the other Captain became so endearing in such a short time just by acting like good people. I never would have expected the running gag of Jennifer and Mariner to turn out this way but honestly?? I really ship it. I think it would be cute to have that sort of side relationship, even if Mariner is still closer to Boimler, Tendi, and Rutherford
It's not being forced, this is an editorial choice, based upon the concern of the algorithm not popularizing the channel as much. No one is being forced to do anything. Google isn't making it happen, RUclips isn't making it happen. The channel creator is doing this based upon an unfounded fear of a theoretical event. I think the choice of moving reviewing a kid's show to a channel titled 'After Dark' is really fantastically unwise, if not actually intended click-bait controversy. It's begging for someone to notice and object loudly and publicly, and while it's been said there's no such thing as bad publicity, this is not a good look for the channel or the content creator. The unintended consequences of one's actions is a frequent Trek riff. This is something that doesn't have to happen. The content creator would do well to take a few steps back and look at things from a new and different perspective. Because whatever happens, they'll own it...including what they didn't plan for. One person's opinion.
@@Shard18 That's also something to consider. Maybe, if it's possible, it would be better to give Prodigy it's own channel and keep it there, separate from everything. That way, the issue is side-stepped and Jessie's on firmer ground for content.
@@alexanderriley2979 I haven't seen Jesse after dark but I can't imagine it's at all blue. More just like a Jesse fan hang out. If CBS can do Big Brother after-dark ... which I believe is rather tame as well, I suspect Prodigy will be just fine on the Jesse Gender version. It might even get queer youth to wanna see what's going on.
Oh my Madokami, that was an awesome finale. One line that I found oddly cute was Tendi asking Rutherford if Freeman and Mariner always came to the Captain's Yacht to fight, and if that's why it's off-limits. That's such a Tendi question. Really interested to find out where they'll take the mysteries going forward, and hoping for lots more cute Tendi & Rutherford scenes as well as Mariner & Jennifer.
What a great episode, excited for the plot elements of next season. My theory: tendi being put on a science officer track despite still being an excellent medic makes me think they'll have a short arc of her trying to be a science person but not being the best at it: in comes the Vulcan from last ep, newly swapped in and ready to take that slot instead, letting Tendi keep the medical officer role of this LD crew. Hopefully without any conflict between the two lol
OR... Hear me out, giving Tendi someone to conflict with to give more depth to her character and room for growth by having to struggle AND deal with someone who is definitely not going to immediately fall in love with her.
I would really like Tendi to get promoted (especially since she's one of the characters LEAST interested in promotion from what we've seen) and struggle to keep her connection to & grounding with the Lower Deckers while simultaneously learning a role with higher authority... And maybe showing Mariner at the same time that she's not REALLY as averse to ranking up as she wants to seem.
TREKCORE: Fans are clamoring to see T’Lyn again, they really fell in love with her. McMAHAN: Kathryn Lyn wrote it, and she’s so deep into it - literally, T’Lyn is the name of the Vulcan she has cosplayed as for years at conventions. There are a lot of people who are like, “Have her join the Cerritos!” - but listen, I have a story for T’Lyn figured out. Season 3 is written, and like, the first episode of Season 3, she’s not on the Cerritos, you know what I mean? But I have stories for T’Lyn that are coming. I love T’Lyn - and I love Ma’ah! My whole thing with Klingons is that I just love a Klingon that doesn’t backstab. A Klingon that’s like, the most honest in their motivations.
@@mikcnmvedmsfonoteka A Klingon who backstabs has no honor! Ma'ah behaves in an honorable way. And what better proof than the reaction of the targ... They know who is reliable and who is not, oh yes, they know!
I love, love, LOVED seeing Cetacean ops! I'm so glad for the payoff of that running joke. Meeting the dolphin characters make we want to rewatch for tone on previous mentions of Cetacean ops. There are definite horny dolphin vibes there. Which is scientifically accurate. They can get randy with people. It's definitely a thing. So many great moments for our quartet. Again seeing Rutherford being more confident while still being the adorable nerd we love is great. I like that we're getting a bit more depth to his character and more stories with him at the forefront. And his triple backup... yeah, that's me to a T. I just cleared out my phone and I totally made triple back ups of all my pics. I feel this. And I CAN'T WAIT to learn more about the mystery! Tendi's moment with T'Ana was so sweet. I loved that she caved to the hug, and started purring. That made my heart happy. I can't wait to see what she does as a science officer rather than medical. I see her as a very Tilly-like character. It was great seeing her have a BAMF moment telling off Mariner. I had the moment of wondering about Boimler, too. The stakes felt real. I figured there would be some twist about Freeman's promotion at the end, but I was totally gut punched by the arrest. So many things to look forward to next season. Wow! This continues to be a beautiful love letter to Trek.
The fact that LD can shift to a more dramatic tone is one of the things that makes for a great series. I recall how often people decried that lower decks was basically “New trek trying to rip off of RIck and Morty” however it has a much more Red Dwarf feel, (strangely enough when visiting the UK, Patrick Stewart remarked seeing Red Dwarf and thought it was IP theft enough to call his lawyer but got the joke, before his lawyer got on the line) Red Dwarf was amazing for how it started as a comedy and could dip it’s toe into other stories with more drama. So good to see more sci-fi that can (but does not necessarily have to) take it self seriously. Also both make great cat gags.
@@davedahl4461 The first thing he'll do is tell the counselor to stop dressing like an English professor and put on a proper uniform. Then he'll tell Mariner to button up her tunic and roll down those sleeves.
I really loved this episode! I think my fave storyline was with Tendi & Rutherford. They always surprise me by being so wholesome & optimistic. Like being happy to make new memories after the amnesia hit or deciding to enjoy Tendi’s supposedly last day on the ship together 🥰
First! I’ve been waiting here watching ST:TWOK waiting for your reaction video to drop… Im happy that Season 2 is going out on a ‘high note’ - can’t wait to see it later today🖖 I agree Jessie - Lower Decks has ‘moved me’ beyond belief as well - it’s not just the BEST of New Trek but the BEST Trek series conceptually and from a ‘polished finished product’ standpoint since TOS Thanks 🙏
@@rommdan2716 Notice they had rounded ears, not pointed ears. Meaning they are most likely human. Meaning Section 31. Which could bring back Bashir, hopefully?
Now I have a ton of questions. Did humanity (and by extension the United Earth/Federation) revaluate the status of whales and dolphins after the events of The Voyage Home? Did they explain to a pod of Orcas once they translated their songs, "Hey we humans have gone to space and created a Federation of Planets would you like to join?" And did the Orcas or maybe a bottlenose dolphin asked, "Can we go to space too?" Did the Federation contact the Xindi to create an entire wing of the Starfleet Academy to house and train the new cadets? Do pods of Cetaceans (Orcas, dolphins and the like) swim up to San Francisco bay and bid their pod mates goodbye as they enter the academy?
I love that the removal of the outer hull was subtly foreshadowed, early in the season, when Rutherford and Tendi were working on their model and were casually removing sections of the outer hull, revealing the inner hull, looking _exactly_ like it does in this episode, all the way back then!
When I watch your reviews or other videos I always expect to see the number "1M" as I scroll down and I am always surprised that you're under 100k subs. Great episode and fun review, this episode had a lot of heart. It started out a bit weird for me with all the F bombs but this is just hands down an amazing episode of Star Trek.
I love this show... what an ending. SIDE NOTE: You know Mariner and her 'guardian angel' Jennifer will be spending some off the screen rewarding time... It's kind of implied and you know Mariner struck a nerve when she said to Jennifer earlier "that you must have me in your mind all the time..." You know Mariner, and she made that clear earlier in the episode 'we'll always have Tom Paris' her style is pretty much open...Bad boys, bad girls... I hope they surprise us with a series in Feb or March 2022 (fingers crossed).
honestly I get the feeling Section 31 are coming, their whole point is to protect the Federation and the Packleds were becoming a possible threat. So using S31's logic it's best to nip it in the bud (a lesson they learned from dealing with the Dominion and the founders)
That is who I am guessing installed the implant. I would suspect the implant would not have anything to do with the Packleds though as he was around before them (unless they were slowly bumbling into power). It is possible Section 31 bombed the planet, but equally possible the one with the biggest hat on the Packled homeworld was having fun pushing buttons on the new Klingon bomb. Also, the Packleds are a fantastic choice of bad guys.
The only star trek I've ever seen was the random episodes my dad would watch on TV as a kid, and while my knowledge is limited I could listen to you talk about it all day lol you're so excited about it I love it
I gotta say, when Mariner told her mom "I never want to work with you again", I was getting so many death flags. I'm glad Freeman wasn't killed off. :P
If they explore the romantic angle with Jennifer, it could be an interesting way to introduce the multi-gender nature of andorians (4 or 5 genders I think)
I think you really summed it up perfectly when you explained how invested you were in the episode in spite of the fewer jokes. I'm having a hard time picking one thing out of all the great stuff that happened, but I think Tendi's storyline was definitely a highlight. Specifically, I really liked that she was the one who called out Mariner and reiterated that they were all family. All season long, Tendi has been learning to be more assertive, and I think it makes perfect sense that it would be something like that that would finally push her to take charge of a situation.
A perfect analysis. It wasn't unfunny, but it had a great depth of emotion. It was great. The humor and the drama didn't clash with each other. Awesome!
It seemed a tiny bit contrived that the manual release for the hull plating was at the bottom of the dolphin tank...how would that be easy to get to, even under normal circumstances?
I’m a bit disappointed that boimler and his time on the titan was really only shown in one episode and almost all the cliffhangers from last season were solved in the first two episodes. This show is awesome I just hope they let the arcs they have set up this episode actually play out a tiny bit more seriously. I think this episode had a great balance of comedy vs serious all trek has funny moments I think LD the last 3 episodes has found that sweet spot. My favorite moment of the episode was the dolphin crewmebers giving life saving advice “his blowhole is broken keep him wet!”
Thanks ever so much for taking us through this epically fantastic show. You and cutie Seán Ferrick have made me love it even more. Cetacean Ops! 💙🐬 I tear up just hearing the Lower Decks theme song - and spend a whole day smiling when I have it as an earworm. 🌹🖖🏼
I really hope that the finale of this show shows all of them getting promoted, with Boimler as the captain, Rutherford as the Chief Engineer, Tendi as the Science Officer, and Mariner as either the First Officer or the Security Chief
I don't care about your reviews themselves so much (sci-fi isn't my tea) but the sheer joy and excitement you have is just so great. I'm here for that. For your joy qnd passion
Yes... I wanted the show to be a little more serious, with some laughs here and there.. like Orville had done in their 2nd season. I was very emotionally invested in the ep and I did not expect that. I am going to have to agree to disagree but I want these type of eps and storytelling more as the show progresses... to take things more seriously but still have the fun charm as usual.
I would love to see a live-action movie of Lower Decks. If McMahan, is interested in producing it, I think It would probably be one of the best Star Trek movies ever made. The animated characters look very close to the actual actors doing the voice-overs, so there would really be very little casting worries.
hey now, cetacean ops HAS to be near some hull platung, and you can't say we can't be thankful for the payoff. I've really enjoyed the last few episodes, not that i didn't like the show before, but i feel like it's coming into it's own, I'm keen for season 3 in a way i wasn't necessarily for season 2. Thank you Jessie, lov u 💜
There was a moment where I thought they'd kill off Boimler and bring in his transporter clone, and then deal with him having had a whole different season 2. I'm glad that's not the path they took though
Honestly, that scene where they had to navigate manually really reminded me of that one episode of DS9, where the Defiant was damaged in enemy territory, but they still had to complete the mission. The coms and I think some systems were down, so a lot of things that would normally be automated had to be done manually instead, and since they couldn't use coms, they had Nog with a little earpiece, relaying orders/messages between the Bridge and Engineering. Just that scrappy, buckle-down-and-get-it-done, do it the old-fashioned way bad-assery that Star Trek (for obvious reasons, being a Sci-Fi) rarely gets to indulge in.
23:00 I could've sworn Mariner wasn't able to reciprocate the "does that mean you like me?" so Mariner tried to hook Boimler up w/the Andorian. Wouldn't have worked out either way though since "Andorians are cold in all the wrong places" according to at least 1 nymphomaniacal human prisoner in Discovery Season 1.
Actually, it was JENNIFER, not Freeman, who caught Mariner.
I guess she really did catcher her with contraband.

*The episode implying Mariner likes Jennifer*
Me: Oooooooh.... I get it....
"When I was in Starfleet I had a crush on a girl & didnt know how to deal w it so I wrote her a letter that just said "get out of my ship""
OMG the dolphins have dialogue and uniforms! That is enough to give it a 10 out of 10.
i belive this was a hats off at Seaquest DSV, a great series thats ran at the time of TNG and for many reasons had the same fanbase.
@@Thurthof5 It might be a hat tip to David Brin. His Uplift universe has a dolphin crewed spaceship.
@@tintinaus they are excellent pilots and navigators, a bit perpetually horny though;-)
Their dolphin-centred view of life (use of 'calves', refering to Boimer having a blowhole and being required to kept wet) is neat, especially when they're angry about there being a human-centred piece of ship infrastructure within their area.
My favorite moment was when Tendi was doing CPR on Boimler and the dolphins were saying “His blowhole is broken” and “Don’t let him dry out”

YUP YUP YUP
It's small but I personally liked how, during Mariner and Jennifer's scene together at the end, when Boimler runs off to tell Captain Freeman that he made the banner Jennifer comments "I like that guy." and Mariner responds "Yeah, he's great." If Boimler did something so silly and childish in season 1 he'd probably get mocked for it, but instead here Jennifer and Mariner seem to just accept it, maybe even finding it a bit endearing.
Don't forget that Jennifer was one of the Redshirts, so she had a front row seat when Boimler joined the group.
I love this show. I only hate that they make 10 eps a season
Cetacean ops appearance had me cheering!
I loved it.
That was FANTASTIC! The refit Excelsior class is just out and out beautiful. I was beyond impressed- what a way to end a season!
And Dr. T'Ana accepting Tendi's hug and purring? Too cute!
this episode was spectacular- the main plot was incredible and something we've never seen in trek before and god damn the character development and character moments in this one was WONDERFUL (also- it feels like they're setting up a jennifer/mariner relationship, or atleast hinting at one)
Beckifer
@@TheMsLourdes That one is way better, hopefully that will be the standard
I haven’t been this excited for a next season since Archer and company headed to the Expanse 👍
….speaking of that, was it wrong to hope there was an aquatic Xindi in the tank with the dolphins ?
I'm going to assume those two dolphins are on some sort of "List" and Starfleet keeps them on a lower tier ship like the Cerritos where they can't sexually harass other aquatic species.
Plenty of Xindi on other cetacean ops ships.
Aren't the xindi supposed to join federation only in the 27th century? Also aquatic xindi are freaking big! Uplifted Dolphins are a throwback to the work of sci-fi author david brin though (Dolphins make kick ass pilots!)
I also assumed it would have aquatic Xindi
@@matthewrye3156 my best guess its likely going to be either some form of Romulan or Section 31 Conspiracy.
I did love that the first thought of the doomed crew of the Archimedes was that if they hit the planet "it would cause devastation to the planet" rather than "we're all going to die."
I know it was a little thing, but I like the fact that this silly comedy show still has that fundamental Star Trek morality at its core.
It was Jennifer, not Freeman, that saved Mariner. This was an excellent Star Trek episode! 👍 I can't wait for the next season!
It would’ve been great if one of the dolphins had been named Darwin. It would’ve been a great SeaQuest DSV easter egg.
On the Lower Decks ready room, Mike McMahan made a reference to SeaQuest!
Jessie! Go back and rewatch in slow-mo the scene when Rutherford deletes his redundant memories and you'll find 4 new bits they added for us:
* New year's eve
* Bee in the glass
* Finger Trap
* Ransom's portrait
I loved the moment where Mariner responds to Billups on the bridge about the final piece of hull plating: "Boimler's got this, give him time!"
She didn't have a quip or a joke, just confidence that Boimler will do his job.
Because while you're there...you can make a difference." Freeman onboard the Cerritos can make a difference.
really looking forward to future Beckett & Jennfier adventures! ship name: Jeckett? ... or BENNIFER???? :D ✨
I'm going with Beckiffer.
@@kayfoulkes4345 I saw someone on twitter calling it Beckiffer, so that's what I've been going with too. BECKIFFER IS OTP
I loved Billips going off in Captain Freeman's ready room. If you asked who would go off, Billips would be the last person. Hilarious.
All I can say is, I see Starfleet Security is continuing its tradition of disappointing me because they continuously fail at their job whether it’s redshirts incapable of keeping intruders off their ships or useless on away missions or figuring out they’re being lied to or tricked by some vast conspiracy………they are really just not giving me much confidence, I think Starfleet needs a serious overhaul of its security divisions 🤔😛
Also Seán Ferrick is gonna absolutely lose it that his dream of cetacean ops has come true!!
News flash, him and Adam Cleary totally freaked out over Cetacean ops!
I thought i'd hate lower decks... but having watch the whole season... yeah. Definitely not bad, not bad at all. 👏♥️🇵🇭
This was a great episode seeing the entire crew work together to remove the outer plating gave it an epic feel. I'd like to see Gomez as the Ceritos Captain temporarily next season and a story arc about who framed Captain Freeman the truth about Rutherford's implant.
I can not put into words how much I love this episode. It feels like "Let's go for it."
Star Trek as it should be. All the feels. ALL the feels.
Mariner/Jennifer confirmed 👀😍🥰👀
I’m so happy to see that
Boimler has had so many good moments this season and him just telling Mariner why she's upset with her mum was another great one (not to mention all his Captain Freeman day antics were consistently funny)
One thing this episode and the previous one has proved to me about this show is that it's remarkably good at getting you invested in characters quickly by giving them humanity and kindness where others wouldn't.
It's ironic that a Star Trek show, whose target audience is kids, is being forced by an algorithm to be reviewed on a YT channel called 'After Dark'.
One person's opinion.
lower decks isent a kids show
@@Shard18 That's also something to consider.
@@Shard18 They're talking about the Prodigy reviews (when they start).
@@KentuckyKaiju I can see that. Particularly given the talents of T'Lyn
Such a great finale for an animated series destined to last for so many years.
So well broken down Jessie! Love your Uniform...
Oh well, now the ship will get a new captain.
Be hilarious if it was Jellico! Captain Jellico versus the crew of the Cerritos.

What if it was Section 31 who put on the implant on Rutherford
Honestly that's my theory based on the scene we saw.
Or Romulan or Vulcan, could be anyone, damm it humanoid shaddy figures looks all the same
My first thought.
@@rommdan2716 Notice they had rounded ears, not pointed ears. Meaning they are most likely human. Meaning Section 31. Which could bring back Bashir, hopefully?
my first thought were those extra-dimensional robed aliens from that one episode of TNG (not sure which one)
Heres hoping this two parter becomes LDs "best of both worlds" they nailed the first part and I cannot wait to see what this show does next.
I'm here for the Jariner pairing, but is anyone gonna talk about the potential for Rutherford x Cetacean Ops?
Their names are Kimolu and Matt, and they are Starfleet officers. Put some respect on their names. /s
I love that your reviews are the same length as the episodes! I'll definitely be tuning in for the Prodigy discussions! Thanks for everything!
I always come to watch your breakdowns right after I watch each episode. These always so much that I don’t notice
Same. It helps a lot to notice little things we've missed.
So many great things:
-New interesting backstory for Rutherford
-CETACEAN OPS
-Captain Sonia Gomez
I hope next season we get one or two more episodes.
Did they just "The best of bother worlds"ed us?
Just so. 😭😭
honestly I get the feeling Section 31 are coming, their whole point is to protect the Federation and the Packleds were becoming a possible threat.
The only star trek I've ever seen was the random episodes my dad would watch on TV as a kid, and while my knowledge is limited I could listen to you talk about it all day lol you're so excited about it I love it
Those were beluga whales not dolphins. You can tell by the color and face shape.

An aquatic Xindi, 2 dolphins, and a Tardigrade swim into a bar.....
And?

A perfect analysis. It wasn't unfunny, but it had a great depth of emotion. It was great. The humor and the drama didn't clash with each other. Awesome!
It seemed a tiny bit contrived that the manual release for the hull plating was at the bottom of the dolphin tank...how would that be easy to get to, even under normal circumstances?
First thing that went through my mind as Boimler blacked out was that they do have that other one on the Titan. Glad they didn't go that route.

Ok first, I need to see the rubber ducky room Tendi mentions. Second, I don't think Rygel would be pleased that he has to share shelf space.

I'm actually amazed people aren't tripping on the bridge. So many steps and wood arches.
Something I find really cute is that the actors who play Captain Freeman and Admiral Freeman also played Hermes and LaBarbara on Futurama.
You're fun - I love listening to you geek out over stuff
