As I sailed into my 50s, I decided I needed to spend more time being creative instead of watching DVDs and videos. I still indulge in old TV shows, but I make sure to spend at least two hours a day in my sketchbook. This video was a good reminder of that.
What a brilliant thoughtful video, so true, we don't need to lose our unique perspective and individuality and become just another by product of an intrusive tech dominated world. Creativity is the best way to be ourselves and enjoy life as it's meant to be.

I agree. I’ve been a professional artist for 39 years as I write this. As I head into retirement, I’m starting to create my own art and stories and it’s the most free I’ve felt in decades.
I wasn't able to get up the gumption to do art at all until I had a couple art fundamentals classes to help me know where to start. (I use "draw a box" & Brent Eviston's "The Art and Science of Drawing" series on SkillShare, if you're curious.)
But now that I have some vague idea what I'm doing, it's so much easier to "just draw".
"Just draw" sounds straightforward, but when you literally have no idea how to render what you're seeing/sensing in your own head, it can be an unbearable stumbling (art) block.
I was never able to "just draw" until I had some simple mileage and instruction.
There is a fine line between consuming content that helps you grow as an individual artist and just consuming content that can hurt your creativity. I’ve been working on cutting out social media and I’ve seen a noticeable difference between the art that I was making and the art that I am now making. How I feel about it and what drives my creative desire.

I’ve seen people do portraits of the same few actors & musicians so even art is losing it’s individuality. Thankfully, there are still enough artists ( myself included though I wasn’t always like that) who are willing to draw for themselves,not just for the ❤ button..👍

It’s not just feeding us, it’s mining/watching what we do and selling it. I take pride in being completely opposite of what they think I will react or interested in. My choices will not make more like others…I buck the system 🙃
I always enjoy your weekly essays and this message was no exception. This video was especially nice given it was in your own words in your own voice. The essence of a poem seems best if read by the creator. An audiobook hits differently if read by the author. There is just something about the delivered intent when heard through the intonation in the voice of the writer. The same rings true, in my opinion, with music where the original just always seems to be ingested with optimal intent. No wonder books always seem to outshine their movies. When we read books we create the story in our imagination. There is room for creative interpretation. Movies based on books are someone else's interpretation and we all consume the same outcome. Your essays are thought provoking, personally connected, and original, but in your own voice it just hit differently. We are products of our environment that today 'consumership' tends to label and put us in boxes that fit a certain mold and yes, you are absolutely correct....we are more than that. We are original and creative. This was much appreciated. Thank you.
