- The challenge for this painting was to use only variations of GREEN. Spring and summer landscapes bring us a lot of green and it is helpful find ways to energize the greens and make them more interesting and less monotonus. In this demo I show you how using another color UNDER all the green can make a more interesting painting.

I think beginners don't appreciate the raw beauty and design of the underpainting ! It's my absolute favorite part as it's where you really get to design and align all the elements and then get crazy with the colour! Love this underpainting
I totally agree!
It can’t be more beautiful 😻
I had a feeling you'd be popping in this morning!Im gonna take some time this morning and have my coffee, squeeze the dogs and cat, and watch you paint👍🏻🤗
I am still struggling with painting the under painting in contrasting colors or getting peak-through to read for me. I will have to keep watching more videos! Thank you for sharing your expertise and process, I am thankful for your videos and your open teaching style. Have a lovely day.
Thank you!! I appreciate you watching!
Wow! What a beautiful painting! You make an ordinary photo look so much interesting! Genius!
Thank you so much 😀
What a beautiful landscape!
So lovely and helpful. Thank you.
You are so welcome!
Thank you Karen! Another great video, you are an inspiration to us all.
Thank you so much!
I think when we use less expected or local colour , it gives our work a whole different spin! I'm a big fan of using colour just to see what I get so a weird choice is a good choice
This made me think of Scotland. It’s so beautiful and ‘green’ there. Absolutely love it!!!! ❤️
Thank you Kimberly!
Thank you. I am three weeks old. My budget allowed me the sixty half stick blick pro and four ten half stick Rembrandt sets. I have nupastel I found out after asking you. I found 93 of the 96 set. Many brokers and smalls but to find that many was great. Thank you for your help.
That is awesome! You are doing great!!
Thank you, I learn something everytime....and I always love to watch the process!
I'm so glad! Thanks for watching!
Very helpful to watch- and enjoyable!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much for another great tutorial, Karen. You give so much of yourself and explain everything thoroughly for us in these lessons. I want to let you know that it makes a big impact and you help us so much with all that you do. I'm a beginner and a new fan of yours. Best wishes from Kennesaw Georgia, just right down the road, hehe.
You are so welcome! It is my pleasure to share with you!
I enjoyed your color and value teaching, I'm a plein air oil painter but you gave me a lot of helpful tips to think about, beautiful work! 😊
You are so welcome!
Thank you Karen. I appreciate your generosity in bringing us these lessons. I always learn something, or am reminded of something I’d forgotten.
I’d be interested in a virtual class.
You are so welcome!
This is one of the most helpful pastel videos I’ve ever seen! Thank you!
You're so welcome! Thank you for the kind words!!
That was the best set and the best deal going at the time! I got it maybe 10-12 years ago and they've long joined the rest of the sticks and squares😂😍💥
I know! I think the only reason this box is intact is that it is hidden under other boxes so I forget about them!
Just saw your video on less expensive pastels. So helpful. Not only are you a fabulous artist, you are also a fab instructor.
L
Thanks so much 😊
It is fantastic! This underpainting is amazing! Thank You!!! I would be interested in a virtual class. My English is not so good, but I understand everything you say, you are very good teacher :D

OMG: You are extremely wonderful with your teachings. I've been trying and it is not going so great. So, I watch even though my husband tells me to go to bed. lol Thank you for all that you do for us. :)

Love green. You are wonderful. Painting amazing!. You're so appreciated!!!! ❤🖼
Thank you so much!
Great video, as always! I would be interested in a virtual workshop for sure!
Coming soon!
Karen first of all thanks for every tutorial you post their is always something of value and I always look forward to them. Can you tell us more about the Wallis paper it takes pastel not like any paper I have seen before it looks amazing to work with.
Wallis is a sanded pastel paper that is no longer made. It used to be a favorite of many pastel artists! I still have a small stash left and use it with care!
Yes, I would be interested in a virtual class.
Great! I'll be announcing details soon!
Thankyou for another excellent demo. So pleased you are working on some online classes, I've just bought some of your PDF demos and there are so many hints and tips in there, can't wait for your virtual classes. Yorkshire Dales, UK

ABSOLUTELY STUNNING....I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS....:)
Thank you so much!
I would be interested in a virtual workshop too.
Excellent! Information coming soon!
I’m mesmerized by your work! You are awesome! I’m a beginner of pastel paintings, can you tell me what kind of easel you use and what do you recommend? Thank you
Thank you Shirley! I am using a Blick brand aluminum easel. It is inexpensive yet sturdy!
Karen Margulis sorry, may I ask one more question, why does yours look like an old classroom blackboard? I looked at the aluminum ones at Blick....they look flimsy and any little pressure can fall over ?!
@@shirleyrobinson8900 I am also using a piece of black foam core on the easel to attach my paper. Here is the link to the easel: www.dickblick.com/products/blick-studio-aluminum-single-mast-easel/
I find when you alcohol wash on this paper it tends to wash the pastel away as opposed to on UART or whatever it sinks it in and makes a stain! I think the dry rub underpainting is best on a colored ground, what do you think?
True but I like the dry rub on light color paper to fill in the light bits and tone the paper.
Hi Karen, I’m very interested in the virtual workshop that you mentioned! We’ve moved from Santa Barbara and are now in Boca Raton, FL. so if you’re teaching a live workshop again in Florida please let me know!! With the busyness and stress of moving I haven’t painted since January so it’s time to get started again!!
Hi Lynn! I grew up in Boca and still have family there! Send me an email at Karen Margulis@ gmail.com to get on my interest list for the online workshops!
I would like more information on the virtual class please. Would it be at a specific time ‘live’ or something I could work through at my own speed in my time zone, Europe. Thanks for this video.
They will not be live so well work with your time zone. I hope to have it ready in the next two weeks.
Thanks for the reply I will look out for information.
Hi...is it possible to paint a misty night landscape , with a full moon using pastels? I've googled it and can only find demos using oil or acrylic paints. The scene I'm trying to recreate is a Kentucky horse pasture with a horse in the foreground and trees and board fence in the background. Full moon shining down through the fog/mist. It has a light bluish grey tint. I've tried several times and it just comes out looking muddy and cartoonish. The closest tutorial I've found is your winter landscape demo.
Hi Karen, that was a wonderful lesson and a beautiful painting, as usual. Thanks so much!
Guess what? My Terry Ludwigs arrived a couple of days ago!!! Wow they’re so luscious. At first I just looked at them for half a day. They cost a lot in Australian dollars - $450 including shipping. Our dollar is weak atm.
I’m very interested in your lessons, the ones you mentioned in this video. Please let me know what I need to do.
Best wishes from Sandy 🌷💐💕
Wonderful! I know you will love the pastels !! I am working on an online one day workshop and will announce it soon! send me an email karenmargulis @ gmail to get on the list!
Karen Margulis I love the TL pastels very much already! :) Yes I shall email you tomorrow. Blessings 🌺
I love your painting. Your explanations are ver clear. May I ask, do you ever use Grumbacher soft pastels? If you did, would you let me know what you think of them? I just have a small number of Sennelier soft pastels and I found pre-owned Grumbacher soft pastels on eBay. I would really appreciate your opinion.
Thanks for watching! When I first started with pastels I had an old small set of Grumbacher pastels and I enjoyed using them. Since the original Grumbachers are no longer made I have not tried to find them again. My favorite pastels are Terry Ludwig but those Grumbachers were very nice to use. I found an interesting article about them you might like:www.artistsnetwork.com/art-mediums/pastel/grumbacher-and-rembrandt-two-historic-pastel-brands/
Thank you for taking the time to reply to me, Karen. Not everyone does! I will keep watching your demos!
Excellent work!
How did the Diane Townsend pearlescent work out?
It was fun but a little too light for this painting. I need to find a darker one.
Very interested in your virtual class! please share details.
Coming soon! Thank you!
Buenas tardes . Quería saber como se comporta el carboncillo con el pastel o al contrario . Gracias
You can use charcoal with soft pastels!
Thanks for your help, youre videos are awesome
Karen I would be interested in an online workshop.
It is coming soon! Send me an email at Karen Margulis @ gmail .com to get on my list!
