- In order to create a miniature version of the giant Douglas Fir tree known as "Big Lonely Doug", my first task was to find one!
I was inspired by Harley Rustad's book, Big Lonely Doug to create a bonsai version of the full size tree after his visit this summer. For more information on the book, click the link below....

Special thanks to Leszek, a great friend to me and to the world of bonsai!
For a look at the bonsai article in the Walrus magazine, here is the link....

My favorite part of this video is the friendship between these guys. Thanks for sharing.
What a wonderful personality Leszek has!!! So energetic and fun and he's so generous to think about you to gather these trees. Anxiously awaiting part 2!!
He is such a sweet friend of yours getting you these babies and packing them so beautifully to have them delivered in the best condition. Made my day watching this video and you are lucky to have such friends around you with such a deep interest in bonsai as yours. Thank you for sharing this experience with all of us.
Thank you, the world would be a better place if everyone had a friend like Leszek!
@@TheBonsaiZone So true Mr. Nigel. If I get a chance I would definitely visit you. You have taught and inspired me a lot in the World of Bonsai.
Wow what a gift. Everyone should have friends like that.
Tom Zifer hii
not everybody deserves friends like that
What a nice and valuable friend you have! He was very excited and happy to bring you the trees! Nice, nice and very nice person. That talks of you either.
Awesome trees! What a great guy!
Really looking forward to seeing you Nigel doing your magic on those trees.
AWE! You guys are SOOOO cute! Goodness gracious! I can't wait to see them develop! Oh my goodness, I could feel the excitement in your voice. Like me when I picked up my new Doctor Fish from the pet store yesterday. Shaking.... Good People deserve good things.... Your friend is correct, they are in capable hands!
Enjoyed seeing the unveiling of the trees. Can't wait to see part 2.
Thanks for this opportunity Leszek! Can’t wait to see how they all go
I always feel so happy when I watch your videos! Great trees! 😃
Hi Nigel, looking forward to seeing you again our Fall Bonsai Show and Sale on Saturday Oct.20 and Sunday Oct.21.
I'll be there! Thanks!
How exciting!!!! Looking great, so healthy! Planting arrangement looks very good👏🏻👍🏻
Thanks, I was very happy to get some Douglas Fir trees and to see Leszek again!
I wish I had friends like you and him. What great friends.
Very cool! I look forward to updates.
This makes me so homesick! I moved to Nova Scotia recently and had to leave all my Doug fir, western red cedars, and Sitka spruce seedlings with my mother in Oregon.
Really wish to have a friend like him .... lovely Doug he brought for u, great....
What a sweet guy. I look forward to seeing them get their starter trims.
Fantastic, what beautiful gifts. Looking forward to what your going to do with them Nigel . Going to go read the article about you now . Thanks for sharing!
Great trees. And wonderful packing. Thanks Nigel for his nice video.
Regards
i had a smile through the hole show
thank you
Some people need to buy a Ferrari to be happy, I just need a few trees!
You are great, your friend is also so committed. Hope all of them will take nice shape in coming days. Curious to follow up the development.
I guess im officially a plant nerd now, i went awww with you guys when he pulled out the babies!
I had no idea Douglas fir grew so close to Calgary. There is some wonderful old growth not far from lonely Doug, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the Douglas fir in that area were as tall or not bigger. The red creek fir is not far from lonely Doug and that is recorded to be the tallest. Love old growth. Great work Nigel.
Thank you Adam, i hope to visit BC sometime in the future and check out all the wonderful sites. Your videos have certainly captured the beauty of the province. I hope 100 years from now, all this will still be there to look at, but I'm not so sure it will be.
I am waiting anxiously for part 2
That all worked out well. Been meaning to get one myself, luckily for me there are a few growers that offer tiny saplings over here.
Sounds good Mikey, I'm in the middle of planting the trees right now! All is looking good so far.
What a great friends, and nice video like always.
What a great friend ❤️👍
Yes he is, I miss talking bonsai with him!
Looking forward to the next part
So generous. True friend
Yes indeed!
Trees are amazing mate
im surprised how hard it was to find them. here in new york they are at least sold as Christmas trees. looking forward to see what you will do with them.
Thanks, I have found that Fir trees can be found, but Douglas Firs are harder!
Beautiful bonsai
Nice seeing you again Leszek. It's been a long time. How is the bonsai world out west?
Oh my God.. how did he manage to pack them like that? Seems the trees have flexible trunks.. 😳
Ok looking forward for planting video of those gifts.. 😍
Thank you so much for your sharing.
Hola mi amigo del Canada , no as pensado hacer bonsais de Araucaria?... un saludo desde Chile
Oooooooh!
I love the new old Intro! ^^
Hi nigel saunders how are you? Beautiful trees. From where they are collected
would love to see that old truck in the background brother?
So beautiful Bonsai
Hi Nigel, can you tell me where you bought small nice toy figures of wild animals, cars etc.. I think you have shown us some exhibition or shop of those .. but sorry .. I don't remember now.. can you please tell us?
Is your friend part of a Bonsai club in Calgary and if so where can I find information on that club?
Wow! Very existing.
Thank you Elaine, so far the trees are doing really well!
What a spirited guy . !!
nigiel what do you think about pruning jade bonsai now?
Do you have any references/documentation of hybridization between Pseudotsuga and Abies??? This would be news to me. Cheers!
I watched it further, and that is just a regular Abies, just a case of erroneous collection. Remember Douglas Fir is not a true fit, that is a common source for confusion.
Lol and that last one with the flat orientation of needles is most likely Abies grandis. I thought bonsai guys were good at tree ID!
Thanks, I'll check the cones on them to see if they have the little tail on the scales. The Douglas "Fir" has these very distinct mouse like tails on each scale.
Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone yep like little trident, snake tongues. You can also ID them through the shape and groove found on the needles. Also, true firs (Abies sp.) produce cones that stand upright (like candles) even at maturity, while Doug’s droop down (the cones themselves look completely different too). Abies can hybridized within its genus, but I have never heard of Dougs intermixing with them. There’s kind of a famous grove (at least for mushroom hunters) of white and silver fir around Mt Hood here in Oregon, where you can definitely find hybrids of the two Abies species. There’s also a really nice older growth of noble fir by me that also has some hybrids, BUT at neither place are there true firs hybridizing with dougs. There’s plenty of regular ol dougs around, but there are varieties/subspecies of dougs throughout North America.
Hi my name is Ramon McIntosh im from the USVI i have a question for you i also do bonsai trees and i was wondering why don't you ever use bonsai wire or wire your trees when training them?
I use wire very sparingly or not at all. I like to guide the branches with pruning rather than position them with wire. It creates a very natural tree and you'll see branches that you would never design into the tree on purpose. I do have a video on this....

This is "lay it on the ground" gang level . Breaking Bark
Those trees definitely have a story to tell!
Good vibe Nigel
Thank you, it was an exciting day!
tremendous.
Thank you, part 2 is posted now!
13:26 no sounds in a second?
I muted Mike's last name for privacy.
oh I see
Mr. Nigel, is that a mango tree back there?
Hey Nigel, do you have any other social media for updates?
I don't, just because I can't find the time for other media posts. There is a Instagram site that is approved by me, but not managed by me....

SMALL DOUG HAS FRIENDS! LOVE UKULELE ATLANTA HOLLY
Is Leszek Polish?
I read and enjoyed the “ Walrus “ article.
Perhaps the death of the Japanese emperor’s 800 year old bonsai could be attributed to separation anxiety.
Indian SUMMER here at VIRGINIA
drive to Florida! check out my plants and take some tropical cuttings
your hair is a bonsai tree on its own :D
Very true, I hope there's no squirrels living in it!
Send some seeds
I thought you got a haircut from the thumbnail! haha
Maybe some day!
Thats the spirit haha haven't cut mine in almost 2 years
Ay Alberta
I've done a lot of work for the Calgary stampede stage show over the last 5 years, fun stuff!
If I wasn't watching the fight I'd be Foist
Very close Dubsy!
@@TheBonsaiZone I mean really
I am simply jealous. :-))

Number 1 in the Foist zone tonight Samu!
😄
Wow get with it! Take too long to get to the trees... if part 2 is as bad i may give a thumbs down
I'd stay away from bonsai as a hobby, maybe try sky diving?
he really made if look like a drug deal and he seemed paranoid
Maybe the neighbors were wondering what was going down!
