Yep I bought a cheap drone couple weeks ago and the first lift off once I arose above the roof line of my house it just started flying up and away I couldn't believe the range was that short it disappeared forever so my next drone will be the mini 3 pro (Scratch that now the mini 4 pro lol)
I lost mine last week filmon the stars and spinning in a circle and it took off and tried to return to home point because it was critical low battery but it could not figure out where homepointe was it was Pitch black. Ended up in a subdivision and a half a mile away I'm not kidding I use the find my drone on the RC controller and drove right to it got out of my car walked in someone's yard and it was right there in the Tallgrass I could not believe it thank goodness.

Upon enabling it, you tap the map and it will show you the distance flown and location. Use that line to figure out how to return to the point of origin. You can do this with the proprietary remote or your phone or tablet. Best with a phone (over tablet) as you can mount it onto your DJI controller. A tablet has a bigger screen for viewing but recommended only if you have someone with you. The more premium version of the DJI controller (with a built-in screen) eliminates the need for your phone or 2nd device; however, it is great when filming and you need it to show it externally where you don't have multiple people literally looking over the operator's shoulder.
The VLOS requirement needs to be updated ASAP. It is more in line with old dummy drones. Newest drones with GPS, remote ID, anti collision, know and report better where they are than any visual estimation of their position. In addition the Mini 3 is practically the weight of a bird, doesn't pose any threat and because of its size it is basically invisible a few feet away. So it is penalized for its harmless size? So the VLOS law would rather have you fly a huge drone so you can see it from a longer distance? I think it should be the opposite. If the drone is smaller and harmless and has all the GPS tech onboard then remove superfluous fly restrictions.

You are correct, however there is no way we can determine how much distance between the drones and the clouds from the view provided. I can speculate that the drone wasn’t flying within the clouds, as the video image was still clear on the remote as the drone passed over into view. There is probably a violation on LOS, but I am unaware of the pilots certifications, which I could assume he has a Part 107 certificate if he’s making money off his content, or if he possess a waiver for LOS.
This happens to me all the time. The small form factor with that range makes it really easy to lose track of, especially when you’re trying to watch the camera feed as well. If it’s possible to fly with a spotter, it always makes it much easier. So long as you know where your home point is and have your return height set right, and you’re keeping an eye on your battery life, you’ll probably be fine.
@@emilnilsson4320 that seems excessive if there’s not an online platform in place to accept notifications of that kind. Especially if you’re flying a sub-250g drone. If everyone flying a mavic mini did that, it doesn’t seem sustainable.

Yep, been there. I slipped on ice last winter, fell, my controller got knocked around and somehow my Mini 3 Pro hit a tree and took a dive into AND UNDER the snow. I could not even find the entrance to where it fell. That’s when I learned there is a beacon alarm, tracked that and found my drone 3’ under the snow. Would have never found it until Spring without that beacon. Whew😂
there is no problem. As soon as the drone first ascends, it takes a homecoming position. Let it fly next to you for 15-20 seconds on the first ascent. then fly.
I was studying for the 107 stuff for the commercial license and as I understand line of site... I think that means nothing obstructing the view. I think I read that you can go 3 miles from you. I need to spend all day reading all the stuff for the test to be sure.
Here’s a tip. Don’t use one touch landing if ur very high above the ground. 1 being cause u don’t know if it’s gonna land on something and 2 because I’ve noticed with many drones it can go crazy and think it’s already landed and it’ll shut its blades off. So if I were like 10,15,20 meters above the ground it would be fine but more than that I wouldn’t use 1 touch landing till I’m that close to the ground
Impossible to fly this drone more than 30 meters without losing visual, learn how to use the map and the home button, ensure the home point is updated, more than 13 gps satellites are acquired and you should be absolutely fine.
You know you can mute the return to home beeping right? Just swipe down from the top, sand way you adjust brightness, wifi, etc.... just tap the "mute" button and no more annoying beeping until you need it, then just turn it back on. 😊
You dont turn the sport mode off so the sensors turn back on for the auto land? I've put mine into trees a few times, 5th set of props and had to take the gimble apart and fix it (that wasnt fun at all)
yeah i know that return to home feature. and if you lose your drone in the fields or somewhere you can go to the map look at the flight patterns and track it down you can also activate the beeping sound to find your drone
That’s why I love and have their drones but it should be set to RTH when the battery is getting low. I don’t let mine get too low just in case the wind picks up and then the blades are gonna have to work harder and burn more juice.
A good visual aid is to turn on the auxiliary light on the bottom of the craft. I programmed the bottom button (I think D1?) on the left hand. If for whatever reason, you lost briefly sight, because of clouds, or looking at your screen... a simple click of the button and you quickly can see it in the sky. Especially in cases where you do not have a drone observer with you.
@nolan Correct! Before I used the aux light, I had a set of Firehouse positioning lights velcroed to the bottom and top. This just flashes continuously, and you can identify your drone constantly. Those are bright during the day, too!
Funnily enough the CAA guidance I've read up to now talks about *line* of sight but isn't clear that you must literally keep it in unaided view. I have a flight I want to do that covers 4.5km but would put the drone beyond the range of my vision, but now I suppose that's not allowed.
Tried that with my 3pro as it was flying through a cloud and I could not see the starting point/myself via camera. Due to the cloud being recognized as object (like really thick smoke as well I believe), RTH failed. Thought I’d lose it. Fortunately there was a very small hole in the cloud so I could see some structure and navigated there. Took a pic of the controller with my smartphone to show locals where that hut might be. 5min later I had the drone back, just a pair of props damaged. And yes the map is a great feature, but not with the DJI RC where you have to download each region you want to fly in beforehand (now I know). This works way better with a regular controller / smartphone attached.
Scary first time today, I thought the battery was not enough to return, it landed 100 meters from the starting point with 9% battery, but safe. A great drone the mini 3 pro.
I am a maniac. I once flew it as far out as I had signal over the water. then when the signal studded and the battery was closing in to point of return, I just turned off the remote. solid 10-15 min, and it landed right in front of me.
That's why I love my M3...it's way bigger than the Mini3Pro and because of its dark grey shell is easy to spot when against white clouds. The only time I never fly so far away is when I have my anti-collision light on it and I can see it so not hundreds of feet in the air like that. If I'm going be 200 - 300 ft up I stop once it's a little black speck in the sky and go no further
That's what I like about my drones. It can see you but you can't see it. I can't tell you how many times this feature has saved me. I have two air 2s and a air2s. The only reason I got the a2s is because of the zoom and it's worth it.

If for some reason you ever lose sight if your UAS, check your hight, then move it up and down a few mtrs. This will trick the eye which should enable you to spot it a little easier against light and dark cload or sky. 🫡
Actually that only works if it picks up home before you take off. I flew mine the other day and it didn't pick up home straight away. I was hovering over someone's home and it said home located. Not where I left off though. Luckily I knew the place
Yes this is why you always should wait until til it records the home point before takeoff. The other thing is that if it loses signal or goes into a return to home mode before it records it, it will attempt to go to its last known home point (which could be miles away).

It happens but I wouldn't go posting it on social media. FAA says you have to maintain VLOS at all times. Oh yeah and learn to use the map.

I've always thought that line-of-sight rule is silly. I already can't see my drone when is up there barely 400 ft away.

If for some reason you ever lose sight if your UAS, check your hight, then move it up and down a few mtrs. This will trick the eye which should enable you to spot it a little easier against light and dark cload or sky. 🫡
Actually that only works if it picks up home before you take off. I flew mine the other day and it didn't pick up home straight away. I was hovering over someone's home and it said home located. Not where I left off though. Luckily I knew the place
Yes this is why you always should wait until til it records the home point before takeoff. The other thing is that if it loses signal or goes into a return to home mode before it records it, it will attempt to go to its last known home point (which could be miles away).
@@TheDroneHangarLLC yeah I learnt that the hard way. I didn't know it could do that either I always thought when the drone is turned off it erases the previous home point
