    In today's video I bought myself a mental barn find, restoration project, TVR Cerbera, this car has sat in a barn for over 10 years and is going to require a lot of love to get it back to its former glory! This is going to be an interesting long term series at the very least!

    Wheeler Dealers restored one some years back, I think that was an AJP engined car which needed a new chassis. I love the Peter Wheeler era cars, so unique and have aged so well. Looking forward to seeing this develop.

      I heard they tried to get a chassis for free, might have been from RT racing in Sheffield (not 100% sure on this) When they couldn't, they filmed it being powder coated instead of giving them a plug on TV.

    The outriggers rot first quickly followed by the rest of the space frame because it was n't properly powdercoated in the first place and next is the electrics. Dean I wish you all the best with the car it certainly ain't gonna be dull with this one.

    I'd go for a mallard green like that used on the MG-Bs, it's basically the original British Racing Green colour, it's much deeper, richer and I think it will really set the design alright!

  • @angry7518

    Had that Meta alarm/immobiliser system on my Mk2 Golf, really good system. Button fob did the central locking and removed the alarm. The USB type thing does the immobiliser and you get something like 20 seconds to start the car once you have pushed the stick into the slot, after 20 seconds (ish) the immobiliser is reapplied.
    That engine was developed by TVR in-house so not used in any other car (other TVR’s aside).
    Great project and looking forward to seeing it come along. I always (still do) wanted a Griff 500.

    You might be a bit disappointed on the 'parts-bin' front, a lot of the Cerbera was bespoke unlike the earlier Griffith and Chimaera. I've got a 2002 Cerbera Speed Six, give me a shout if you fancy experiencing a fully sorted one- you'll realise then that the labour of love is well worth it as they're absolutely stonking cars! Oh and the hazard switch is on the end of the indicator stalk 😁

    • @matty6848
      @matty6848 2 года назад +4

      Sounds like fun Mike. How is your TVR reliability wise? I’m in a position financially where I can finally afford a Cerbera but I’m hearing stories about mechanical issues. What’s the biggest issue with them any particular production year too avoid? Thanks.

    • @mikeseabourneracing4854
      @mikeseabourneracing4854 2 года назад +7

      @@matty6848 mine has been pretty good, honestly most of the mechanical issues are just 'old car' problems at this point, perished rubbers and the like, the sort of thing that needs keeping on top of on any 20 plus year old car- the only running issue I've ever had was a failed expansion cap causing it to dump all it's water- and that's a VW sourced cap! It took me a while to reassure myself that the engine wasn't made of glass, but once you have confidence in it they're a pretty sturdy thing- my Speed Six has been rebuilt though which is important, I'm not sure I'd feel so confident in one that hadn't been unless it was a very late car. TVR did seem to have it cracked towards the end of their life, just look at all the Sagaris' and Mk2 Tuscans running around with the Speed Six happily unrebuilt. The reputation had long since been set in stone by then though. I can't really speak for the AJP (the V8 engine) other than to say that it was a racing engine before it was ever a road car engine and did its testing in the most gruelling environment, they do seem to be pretty reliable but the small journal crankshafts were causing issues in the Cerb's early days, to be honest I think any of those that were going to go pop have done so by now. I wouldn't be too worried about the reliability of an AJP, but I would be VERY worried about parts supply if anything major did go wrong. I'd make sure I had some sort of loose plan to source all the NLA bits, then cross everything that I'd never need to rely on it. At least with the Speed Six you have the warm fuzzy feeling of having huge aftermarket support and parts availability should the worst happen, that's what swung it for me.
      I have experienced electrical gremlins, there is usually a simple reason but the Cerb is a lot more complicated than earlier TVRs in terms of its electronics and where with my Chimaera I'd whip out my multimeter and find the problem in 10 minutes the Cerb is a lot more tricky- it's daft stuff like the door and window control systems and the steering wheel controls and their associated ribbon cabling, nothing that will leave you stranded though as the 'running' electrics seem to be pretty resilient. I'm not a very accomplished mechanic and I find it a bit intimidating to work on my Cerb, as opposed to my Chim which I was happy to fettle everything on. Though a lot of that is also to do with the quality of finish as the Cerb is much better screwed together, you could have given my old Chimaera to a loosely trained monkey to pull apart and put back together and the end result wouldn't have been all that different to how it left the factory. They really upped their game with the Cerbera. I personally have noticed a huge difference in quality between earlier and later cars too, generally the later the car the better put together. The interior is a huge part of the Cerbera experience for me but in typical TVR fashion there are rough edges and on a worse one it can really take the shine off, I don't think any of them qualify as perfect but the later the car generally the closer it was to perfect when it left Blackpool.
      The chassis issues are well documented and a major one to look out for, a lot of cars have their problems hidden away under fresh paint or layers of undercoat so it's worth getting a proper nosey at the chassis and particularly the outriggers when buying. As an example my 2002 Cerb is still solid on its original chassis but it's not unknown for them to be well on their way out at that age.
      It's also worth noting that at this point in time they've all had 'a life', some have been absolutely cossetted and some have been neglected- luckily they've such an enthusiastic following that the former generally outweighs the latter. Service history from a specialist such as Str8Six, Powers Performance etc. speaks volumes about the kind of care they've had- these aren't just scaffolding tubes with Rover V8s plonked into them any more, they're far more bespoke and the specialists are specialists for a reason, they know these things inside out. I'd also have a lot more confidence in a Cerb that has been well used and regularly exercised, like most mechanical items sitting around being polished doesn't do them any good- when buying you'll probably come across staggeringly low mileages and maybe that's great for a collector or a museum but if you intend to actually use and rely on the thing I'd be running a mile from anything that's done 10 miles a year, a lot of use tells you that the previous owner had confidence in the car and intended to keep it running, not stationary.
      Ultimately- they're generally pretty reliable, but they're not a Ford Focus and they will test your patience sometimes! Awesome cars though and a truly unique experience.

    • @jamieduff1981
      @jamieduff1981 2 года назад

      @@matty6848 Mine was pretty good also. It broke down on the way home from buying it actually, then again straight after fixing it - clutch slave cylinder followed shortly after by master cylinder. I had it a few years and did a fair number of miles actually. It was the kind of car that always had some niggle I wanted to sort out but actually always started and finished the journey (aforementioned clutch hydraulics failures aside). If you have tools, inclination and aren't useless with your hands and brain they're very simple cars and not that expensive to own although some specific parts are expensive. A few jobs are awkward but not much needs expert levels of skill. If on the other hand you're the kind of person who needs to pay someone to replace a door handle at home then the Cerbera like most high performance cars will bleed you dry. They're more reliable than say 1980s/1990s Italian exotica, but the difference is that people paying the money for Ferraris and Lamborghinis aren't expecting to run the car on a Ford Mondeo budget, which has always been the true source of the horror stories around TVRs. They were cheap to buy, but still came with high performance ongoing needs.

      @@jamieduff1981 thanks Jamie. Well I’m a engineer by trade so used too figuring mechanical problems out for myself and obviously have a garage full of tools, so naturally I’ll have a go myself first. Sod paying a mechanic money for a job I can do myself. Plus when you get working on them you soon learn a lot about your own car usually from trial and error. What prices are you looking at for a decent condition Cerbera 2002ish year? I’ve always wanted a TVR but couldn’t even afford too get insurance on one, now I’m 45 have some capital behind me I’m seriously thinking about taking the plunge. My money isn’t doing anything sitting in the bank, plus I’ll put a little aside each month for not if but when something goes wrong. I’ve been told on TVR forums always have a nest egg saved up for parts, because at some point something will go wrong, even on the really good example TVRs. It’s the nature of the cars.

    My brother in law bought a new 4.5 in 1999 at the cost of 50k or thereabouts as I recall. It was stunning and to this day it's the most amazing sounding car I've ever heard. It unsurprisingly drew crowds wherever he parked up. It was amazing.
    Sadly, as has been eluded to already in these comments , owning one was an absolute nightmare and in the 3 or 4 years or so he had it , it undoubtedly spent more time back in the garage than it did on the road.. something was constantly going wrong with it.
    So, I wish you the very best of luck!
    It's still one of my all time favourites, just wish I'd taken up one of the many offers to drive it (I refused as I wouldn't have been insured).

    Hi mate, I had a 4.5 back in the day. FYI - the ignition button is on the roundish fob. Press this once to bring car into ignition on status. Then plug the USB looking thing (immobiliser) into the slot fitted into the right lower steering column shroud. You'll hear a beep, you now have 30 seconds to push the starter button before the immobiliser re-arms. The square fob on the key ring is an aftermarket alarm - I'd ditch that shit.
    Serious car, axle-tramp in first 3 gears if you drive it hard - crazy fast.

    As for the colour, I agree fully. That green with the cream interior looks absolutely stunning. So I would restore it with that colour and only maybe wrap it in a different colour to see if that works out better. I am already looking forward to all the future videos for this restoration. So awesome to see a tvr. Small brand, plenty of problems but there is just something magical about it.

    The TVR Owners club strapline: 'Push your car to one of our meetings'. Every TVR owner I've ever met has been a proper Colin, you're in for a ride.

    They were proper world beaters, just a shame the reliability and build quality wasn’t up to par and they didn’t sell well, the exterior and interior design was INSANE I love these so much

    If not already mentioned, it might be worth seeking out the episode of Wheeler Dealers where they did a Cerbera.
    I would suggest pulling the motor, checking the internals and renewing the weak points.

    Loved the Cerbera, my favourite car of all time. I used to work for a TVR dealership in Manchester back in the late 90's, I was the TVR parts specialist (As well as North American GM) and I had a really close relationship with the parts specialist Mike Williams at the factory in Blackpool. Most models had no parts catalogues and I had started making my own. That flat plane crank V8 is something utterly special, big issues being the alternator and starter in the V!

    That video brought back memories lol I worked for a tvr dealership in the nineties that video was on a loop at the 97 motor show stand it became quite tedious after 2 weeks 😂 .actually the car in the vid was a seriously modified 4.5. When at the time only 4.2,s were available to be ordered you also need to be aware tvr horses are not as big as Porsche or Ferrari horses and whenever we had a car on a Dyno the results weren’t what we were expecting but even so they were v quick. Those speed six engines had a lot of balancing issues when they were first released and were re called to have a dynamic balanced front pulley added…. Possibly due to an alleged flywheel ending up in the passenger footwell of one cerebra ….. if you search RUclips Richard Hammond borrowed one from our dealership to test he certainly enjoyed it.

    The USB looking devices are the immobiliser. You need to plug one of them in before it will start. The socket for it is in the big hole under the radio. Good luck

    Had a Griff back in the day…. Sprayed it Rover night fire red. Cream interior too…. Looked stunning. I’m not saying it leaked, but I had a life jacket in the boot.
    I’m hooked, subbed and can’t wait to travel this resto journey with you. Good luck, Sir…. Sadly you’ll need it. BUT boy you will smile when it’s finished.

    Plan to take the body off and then fix everything under that. Also the tapits will need setting and the was part of the big service if you what to keep that came in good order. The "key" goes on the right just under the dash (you can see it in your video). All good fun and doable but a good amount of work (so good for youtube).

    I like the looks of the single headlamps and the overall body. Not a fan of the quad taillights but I'm old fashioned in car design.
