Okay, so this is gonna be a long comment so bear with me!
“Blood Sweat & Tears” is the title track of “WINGS”. This particular song and entire album uses a plethora of references that link to one book: “Demian” by german writer Hermann Hesse. This book tells the story of a young boy named Emil Sinclair and his childhood growing up during pre-World War I. He struggles to find his new self-knowledge in the immoral world and is caught between good and evil. Already we have some clues as to what this song/MV is about: the battle between good and evil and temptation.
The video opens up with the members in a museum; notice how every member have symbols of innocence, such as a bike or slingshot; also each younger member is paired with an older member, their “mentor”, referencing “Demian”. Jin, the oldest of the members stands alone. He is staring at the painting called “The Fall of the Rebel Angels” by Peter Bruegel the Elder. (good angels fighting Lucifer/evil angels fallen from Heaven). He is about to begin his journey towards finding his true self and identity. On the left & right, there is a white and a black door, which represent the paths Jin can go on: the good side and the evil side.
Now, If you notice at 7:00, Jungkook is on a swing, and behind him is the painting called “The Lament for Icarus” by Herbert James Draper. Jungkook is representing Icarus troughout the whole video (V also represents Icarus but in a different form). The swing could represent Icarus being safe, the Icarus following orders (he is supported by a swing, safe from the wrongdoings of the world). Also, notice the lollipop in his hand. This could symbolize either another symbol of innocence, or Icarus’ age as he was a child. Later we see a drop of wax dripping on JK’s finger (7:59). This is a representation of the fall of Icarus and foreshadows what will happen to him later in the video (JK licking the said wax from his finger, a symbol of Icarus’ temptation that would later come in as his downfall, foreshadowed by the painting in the back).
At 9:10, V is representing Icarus but also a fallen angel (this scene can also symbolize the fall of Lucifer: he rebelled against God and fell from grace, tempting more angels to do so in the process, thus connecting to the painting at the beginning “The Fall of the Rebel Angels”, maybe this is why he smirks after he falls down the balcony). Behind him we see the painting “Landscape with the Fall of Icarus” by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. This scene represents the death of Icarus (he ignored his father’s warning about flying too close to the sun, until the wax that kept his wings attached to his body melted…and so he fell to his death-again we have the theme of temptation-Icarus falling to temptation. But…at 9:27/9:35 we see Jungkook again, but this time he is floating. He in this scene is dead, and him floating in the air represents how Icarus started “floating” in the water after he fell and drowned, connecting V’s and JK’s scenes. We also see feathers floating in the air and on the floor as well (being underwater). So the whole Icarus imagery in this MV comes in like this: stage 1: We see JK on the swing, Icarus being alive; stage 2: V/Icarus falls off the balcony and into the water; stage 3: The painting in the background (“Landscape with the Fall of Icarus”) foreshadows JK/Icarus when he is floating/drowned (him being dead/underwater); stage 4: the painting behind JK (“The Lament for Icarus”) foreshadows V/Icarus having no wings on anymore which is the final stage (7:00/7:11, 7:59/8:08, 9:10, 9:27/9:35, 11:17).
Now, the kissing scene. (BTW, RM is reading a paragraph from “Demian” at 9:56, if you didn’t read the book, you will not get it; also, this scene portrays Jin letting go of the balloon. This can represent letting go of his childhood innocence, his youth and moving into adulthood) During the interlude of the MV, all the members run towards the exit except for Jin and V. If you notice, Jin has a very confused and scared look on his face while V blindfolds him with his hands. After that, a white statue with black wings appears: this statue represents the god Abraxas-the deity is a representation of good and evil. It is not good or evil, it is both (good and evil into the same word). After that, Jin walks closer to it, takes a look at it then kisses it. This scene represents how Jin has finally embraced both good and evil into himself (by kissing Abraxas), thus destroying the world of innocence he has lived in prior to this. We then see V with his wings cut off, giving a smile to the camera (him smiling could symbolize that Jin’s growth is complete, and he finally accepted chaos into himself which leads to self betterment-theory of Carl Jung: accepting your shadow). Again, Icarus but also a fallen angel. So this whole MV is revolving around Jin most of the time, he is the main protagonist of this MV (his path to adulthood, maturity and acceptance of an evil realm). The quote above the mirror at 11:37 is written in German (belonging to philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche) and translates as: “You need to have chaos in yourself in order to give birth to a dancing star” basically meaning that if you don’t accept chaos (evil) into yourself, you will not be able to grow to your full potential. At the end of the MV we see the only-innocent version of Jin (childhood-like innocence). Since there is no chaos in him, he cannot give birth to the dancing star, since chaos is missing. He is making way for a better version of himself, a new version that will lead him into the next chapter of his life, maturity.
Other scenes that further strenghten the overall theme of the MV include 7:38, RM “drinking” the poison/temptation, 8:22, a “Last Supper” kind of setting in which all the members have an apple and a chalice, both signs of temptation; 9:07, again, a blindfold and an apple (forbidden-fruit) and so on.
This is the Icarus/Demian imagery that appears in the MV and doesn’t really connect with the BU that much: the BU side of the MV is a totally different story like you already know. This is written by me 💜 Love your reaction and insight guys! 💜

Great reaction guys, as always 😊
I think you’re right, as this is quite a common theme with Namjoon and Yoongi’s writing, reflecting on the negative side of fame, the darkness, the fact that you can lose yourself and the reason you wanted to write music in the first place.
For example, in ‘Wildflower’ Namjoon talks about the ‘shackles’ of fame, asks when this ‘wretched mask’ will come off and says, “I can’t go to the stars again, I can’t”.
Similarly, in ‘Shadow: Interlude’, Yoongi talks about how no one warned him how lonely it is and how his ‘shadow’ is growing and becoming a monster, as his fame increases, and talking of his fear that the ‘dark side’ of fame could overwhelm, and even change him.
They really are both brilliant writers 💜💜

Loved your reaction, 💜💜 I couldn't wait until you got to this song, one of my favorites. To me "the kiss" is my favorite part, that was the most important part, because all through the MV Jin fought to keep his innocents, but once he kissed the dark winged angel his innocents was lost, and everything went into chaos and Jins face cracking shows he is no longer pure. Once you lose that innocents you can't go back.

You probably already had heard this, but BTS have referenced the theories of psychoanalyst Carl Jung many times in their music. The WINGS album is based on the book 'Demian' by Hermann Hesse which at the same time is based on Jung's works. This book is basically about the experience we all go through, growing up, changing, losing ones innocence and discovering the evil and darkness that exist in the world and within ourselves, but the approach is really introspective and philosophical, I find it so fascinating

WCK is amazing. I'm so glad you mentioned them. The adults in my family don't give gifts anymore. Instead we make donations to charities in each other's name. WCK is always one of charities that I do. I try to "shop" for a charity that matches the person, while also ones I respect. This is usually the one for either my sister or brother-in-law.
It's one of my favorite MVs of theirs and I really appreciated your thoughtful reaction to it. The Japanese version is a complete fever dream (with very obvious references to the BU). It's really interesting to hear reactors apply current situations to past videos. Not a criticism - it's legitimately interesting. I don't know if anyone would have made the analogy to fame back then, since they had just begun to break through with HYYH (I might be wrong - I wasn't around back then). What's funny is that this is actually the video that shot them even higher, cementing their place as a group to pay attention to in K-pop. We all know how it went from there. 😊

This is the song that got me into BTS I remember watching the MV over and over and being blown away with. Both the song and the visuals, all these years later I’m still as excited to hear it as I was the first time.

About MV and song it is interesting that you go heavy into music with interpretation... It isn't wrong or something but simply interesting, I'm happy you didn't go into simply relationship. But for me this song wasen't about anythinig specific but about feeling - temtation. So your interpretation also fit... Bc fame also is something that seduce. Hmm but yeah for me it was about this, and that is why there is so much eyes closing so no to get temted. Fight agnist good and bad, like white door and black door, like paiting with angeles and demons fighting... Wings album was last one from youth trilogy, so next one they do is young adults (LY series) so when you thinks about this aspect, when you grow there is so much more things that want to tempt you... Money, fame, love, sex, jealousy, greed, social standing, hate, bfoid, safety, vanity, etc, all this is around and it is easier to give in, that why you crack, that is why all around blows bc you can't fight it all and be kid with no worries all life... Yeah that how I see this song without going much into BU...
It is interesting you saw Alice (around table part) bc most people (and me too) saw Last super, bc there is so much religious references, and they have apples on plates when they sit there.... Hmm the same with Hobi part the Pieta statue that is behind him, symbol of mourning...
Then there are 3 paiting (where is Kookie on swing and when V is jumping) that shows Ikarus and most people know what he represents, but simply putting he wanted too much, flying wasen't enought he wanted to get to sun, so he was punished.
There is a lot references to greek mithology, all the statues.
If we talk about art, there is quote from Nietzsche over mirror that Jin is looking into atvthe end, "One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star." You have to experience all the things to become full person, you can interpret it for yourself, but hmm did you see that not only Jin reflection craced but also flowers where different in reflection, why tho?...
Then splashesh of color, green smoke and absenth drinking. Hmm all this feels like geting lost in your mind for me...
I would write more but now it was all the time I had...
But it is important to add this MV is like interpretation of book Damien, like it makes so much sens when you read it and see it.

I really like the scene with the chandelier on the floor, but many, many others also. I found this video shortly after finding BTS; it sealed the deal for me as a talent worth following. As a visual artist the allegory was like some "Myst" puzzle. I've watched many, many times and read some of the inspiration materials. There are several interesting analyses of BST video worth a look. And there's a "behind the scenes video from BTS.
In my opinion, BST and Black Swan are both amazing and were both worthy of grammy nods....sigh!
On another subject: There's an amazing video about the Wannamaker organ in Philadelphia on the Fran Blanche YT channel. I learned SO much about these intricate musical instruments and this video created one of those rabbit hole moments for me that was so enjoyable. It's long but I found it so interesting! (ruclips.net/video/SqVYgBjXURI/видео.html)
