Stormsunder Miniatures & OSL Light Map "Cheat"

  • Painting FeilHeim, the intimidating Norse inspired hero from the board game Stormsunder I decided to try an ambient colour scheme (without an airbrush). Like he's lit by a distant storm on one side, and a burning ruin or flowing lava on the other. Never having tried anything like this before so I devised a bit of a cheat OSL light map to help me along.

    Might I suggest a video on the topic of "Why am I not improving?"?
    Totally asking for a friend here. I am DEFINETELY not frustrated at an attempt at wetblending yellow and red or shading orange with a purple glaze. Anybody who suggests differently is a heretic.

    • @damjan4435
      @damjan4435 3 года назад +16

      Perhaps it is that as you improve, your expectations go up, and your aptitude for spotting mistakes improves too, I'd check my first minis if I were you, and then the newer one's, if you still feel like you aren't improving, don't worry, we'll all get good eventually
      And even then, there'll always be someone that will be amazed by the level you're at right now, better look on the bright side!

    • @52Miniatures
      @52Miniatures  3 года назад +9

      Ah, tricky C! I think my big theme when it comes to this hobby is "am I having fun?". Improving seems to has come as a bi-product. Mainly because of my experimentation I think. If improving is important to you, as in not improving is making things less fun, I'd recommend, once possible to see if you can find some courses or workshops - not online but in real life.

      There is nothing wrong with finding your personal skill ceiling:
      geekandsundry.com/miniature-painting-101-finding-your-personal-painting-ceiling/
      I've accepted (or continue to put work into accepting) that i'm not and never will be a great painter, happy in the "it looks ok on the table from a few feet away" level of ability, but am now trying to focus on efficiency; reducing steps, making each coat do multiple things etc.

Since they seem rather nice and approachable, but hard to remember everything since you have a lot of "pleasant chit chat" in between the steps. • @52Miniatures
      @52Miniatures  2 года назад +1

      I now have a larger compressor, with a tank. My former compressor did not have a tank, so it was smaller. But it also means the compressor runs constantly. There was never any psi issues. With miniatures, usually very low psi works well for me and my work.

    I wonder if it would have been easier or harder if you had used separate photos for each of the two lights. Or indeed if you'd gone to the effort of illuminating the model with lights of radically different colours (say red and blue) so you could use image processing tricks to see the effect of one or both at the same time. Hm, as they say.
    Always excellent, of course!

    • @52Miniatures
      @52Miniatures  3 года назад

      Anything goes really :) For me personally, trying to set the lights in the same photo - i.e in real life gave me a good understanding of how the two sides corresponded with each other. Colors could be great, but might also trick me into painting colours "I don't want". For me a loose sketch is preferred... letting imagination take over while painting. Thanks Stephen!

    • @stephenspackman5573

      @@52Miniatures Mm, I think I didn't explain properly: my idea was that if you used red and blue filters on your spots, then hauled the image into a basic photo editor, you could print the photo as black and white and get the same result as now, but you could also print just the red channel (as b/w) or just the blue channel (as b/w) and get the lights in isolation. I mean, in a perfect world you'd also have the ambient light be green so you could see the dark part more clearly, but that's obviously more fuss…. Anyway, I was just thinking you could isolate the lights in postprocessing so the alignments and composition remain true. Of course, if those aren't the tools you have handy, it's a hassle.
