2020 Acura RDX - An MVP with a critical flaw

  • A tremendous value, there’s only one detail holding the 2020 Acura RDX back from being best in class.
Shop for the 2020 Acura RDX on CarGurus: cargur.us/wCbzY
Few cars luxury compact crossovers offer more luxury than the 2020 Acura RDX. A strong, 272-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder and a flawless 10-speed automatic transmission make it a joy to drive on both highways and backroads. Its sharp looks and upscale interior make it a joy to park in your driveway. And with a starting price of $37,600, the base trim is an unbeatable deal.
But Acura’s insistence on the True Touchpad Interface makes dealing with the RDX’s infotainment system a chore. Similar in function to the Remote Touch trackpad found in Lexus vehicles, the RDX trades a simple touchscreen for a high-tech control device. While it’s clever in theory, mapping 1-to-1 to the infotainment screen, George found it frustrating to use.
On the bright side, the RDX is downright spacious for a compact crossover. Nearly 30 cubic feet of cargo space expands to 58.9 total cubes when the rear seat is folded. There’s also a hidden storage compartment under the trunk floor. Add in advanced safety tech, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and plenty of cupholder and USB ports, and the RDX is a great choice for small families shopping for a luxury car.

I've had my 19' RDX A-Spec Trim since July 2019. I upgraded from a 16' CIvic EX-T Coupe. I must say what an UPGRADE! I initially thought I was going to dislike the shifter buttons. However, it's been a breeze. my only two gripes with the RDX is the squealing brakes and infotainment system glitches that i'm currently experiencing. Like other's who commented said the Infotainment system is intuitive #FACT it is. It's also important to note that Acura is currently working on a fix regarding the squealing brakes which happens in the morning when I'm reversing out of my driveway. As for the carplay, that's an issue with Apple and we're waiting on a new build to be released. Car play would knock out and I wouldn't have any sound coming out regardless of channel (FM/AM, XM or Bluetooth). The current fix is to reset the infotainment system, which is far more in depth than pressing and holding the power button. Overall the RDX is great value and premium vehicle. I chose Acura because of the brand loyalty and incentives, as well as not wanting a RIDICULOUS lease payment that BMW and Benz expect. Can't wait for the SNOW so I can see what the SH-AWD does!!

    • @Prairiedogma
      @Prairiedogma 4 года назад

Matthew Markman, I hope you got winter tires before playing in the snow! They make a much bigger difference in staying out of the ditches than any kind of AWD. But having both is the way to go.

I've had my 2020 A Spec for about 2 months now. The things you're complaining about go away with the first day of ownership. The touch pad is intuitive and keeps your eyes on the road. I had a baby and needed something that was big enough for a stroller and groceries while having enough space for passengers and this suv was perfect. The handling is unbelievably enjoyable. One of the best handling SUVs I've driven. My complaint is the lack of power. It should have at least 300 hp since it's basically a Type R motor. I'm anxiously waiting to see if they make a Type S for the RDX.

I live in Massachusetts and the car thinks it's in California for some reason. Not sure if it just needs a software update or what but I haven't had a chance to bring it to the dealer. Also, the car is limited to 110 mph which is strange to me. If you like going fast once and awhile this isn't the best SUV to buy but it's perfect otherwise.

We bought a '20 tech in Jan '20 (2 mos ago) We've had the car 60 days and I'm on my 5th trip back to the dealer. I've never had this happen before. We're Honda/Acura loyalists, this being our 9th Honda/Acura vehicle and it's an embarrassment to the brand.
Within the first month we had to have lower control arm bushings replaced, which is a known problem that they're still not repairing but selling this way. The brakes constantly squeal and there's no TSB, so no resolution. The lift gate was misaligned and damaged the tailgate trim and the Acura rep wants to "sand down the clear-coat" to smooth the damage versus replacing the trim - on a NEW car, and it has the worst leather seat upholstery stitching and assembly I've ever seen.
It's also a gas guzzler, averaging 17.5 in mixed driving and only 20 or 21 on 500 mile highway drive. It doesn't even approach the EPA numbers on the window sticker, EVER. All the complexity of a four cylinder turbo w/10 speed transmission to get what MPG? Huh? My pick up truck does better!
The only bright side is that the dealer is great, but they can't make up for a poorly designed and manufactured vehicle.
There are much better choices. Save yourself from the mistake we made, look at something else. There's already one class action suit for this redesigned model. Buyers beware.

Check out how badly Honda/Acura have fallen in quality ranking and it tells you everything you need to know. When Mini has better reliability it's time to take stock of your situation and how your brands legendary reliability has been trashed, and FIX IT.
Old 7 months, over 10x to dealer and they can't do anything without Acura's guidance and approval to fix. It's an impossible situation.. There are manufacturing issues they KNOW about but continue to build and sell - and let owners deal with the fallout, hoping there's a percentage that just live with it while Acura figures out if they want to issue a Technical Service Bulletin or not.
Gas mileage is an abomination for this size vehicle. We've had full size SUV's that got within 2 mpg. Its "sporty" positioning is a joke, it just rides firmer, but has steering that is so numb that there's not enough feel to be "sporty".
Check out the Volvo xc60, Model Y, X3, Acadia or Terrain Denali, Cherokee High Altitude, Corsair, or Stelvio if you want out of ordinary. Or go larger because there's no benefit in losing so much space, comfort, and quality by going with the RDX. The RDX has 10 gears all designed to make it feel strong at lower speeds - but it's gutless at highway speeds, has indecisive shifts, and cant' manage even mediocre MPG at speeds over 65 MPH.
You'll see posts of owners claiming high-20 mpg, but "you have to keep it around 65", then reflect on the 19 /20 we're getting with adaptive cruise set to 72-73 with 2 pax, and the dealer and Acura admitting that's what they're seeing in their own RDX's. It cannot even manage the lower published MPG number. Never has.
We turned in a '17 Acadia Denali lease for the RDX, and the contrast is massive. The Acadia was smooth, roomy, luxurious, better equipped, QUIET, and had a better sorted drive train that was more powerful and energetic - and would return 26 mpg easy, loaded with 6 pax, gear, and driving at speeds in excess of 75 mph and in mixed driving matched the RDX but had a wonderful 300 horsepower V6 that pulled like a freight train from stop.
I was an import buyer my whole life, and still have an import sedan and pick-up, but after 3 American SUV's (Buick, GMC, Jeep) my experience has been that American brand SUV's are the easiest to live with; less problems, better equipped, thoughtful options, and by a large margin the the least costly to maintain.

I could care less about the infotainment system unless it was a real pain to operate. The main selling points for me is the great drivetrain with it's powerful Turbo charged 4cly and SH AWD. Its as close as you can get to the performance of the AWD Kings, the Lancer Evolution or Subaru STi but in a more comfortable family friendly package.

my sister has the rdx i had the chance of driving it for a entire month. the true touch pad is actually quite responsive and easy to use. it does ask a couple of days to get use to because its a new interpretion of a mouse. i dont think its fair for the people who actually consider buying this car to tell them that is a bad system when the truth is you probably didnt spend enough time with it. after a week or so you should be able to use the mouse without even looking down . from the moment your arm is rest on the leather supporter, all you have to do is look at the screnn and touch exactly where u wanted. i personally think its a great implimentation. i wish the exhaust sounded better tho

    • @normt5463
      @normt5463 5 лет назад

      ● The system is confusing to use even when the RDX is parked, and it’s very distracting for drivers when the car is moving. For example, they’re forced to look at the screen to execute common audio tasks, and some adjustments are buried deep in submenus. We think it requires too much concentration, multiple steps and extended time with eyes off the road and hand off the wheel. It’s one of the worst systems that we’ve encountered recently.
●Braking performance is strong but the brake pedal has a spongy feel. The suspension quashes most bumps, but we found the ride to be rather firm and choppy. The cabin is quiet, barring a somewhat grainy engine noise.
●We got 22 mpg overall in our tests, which is average for the category, and no better than what we measured with the V6 in the previous-generation RDX. This figure also trails the performance from competitors’ small turbo engines, such as Audi, BMW, and Lexus.
●posting 52 mph through the course. Acura makes a big deal about its Super Handling AWD, which only comes into play when drivers accelerate through a corner.
●Most bumps are absorbed well, but the RDX has a jittery feel over rougher roads and on long drives.
●Most of the time the cabin is very quiet, but a coarse engine hum punches through under acceleration. It’s acceptable when driving aggressively, but annoying in everyday driving
●The brake pedal feels as if it isn’t responding at first, and it requires a bit of effort, which can make the driver feel less-than-confident.
●Although it’s nicely finished, the materials and build quality don’t quite match the best SUVs in this class. For example, the storage cubbies aren’t lined, there were some uneven panel gaps on the center console, and one of the dash vents didn’t move as freely as the others. Finally, there are plenty of soft-touch surfaces throughout the cabin, but the material on the upper dash and window sill is quite thin.
●The RDX’s controls are among the worst we’ve experienced. There is a steep learning curve to use the infotainment system, but it is still distracting and confusing to execute common audio functions even after drivers have some familiarity. The system is slow to load after the initial start up.

Touchscreen or touchpad, people will always find something to complain about. Both would be the preferable option but then the screen position in the RDX would have to change. It should be hard to argue against the current position though, for ease of use while driving and keeping your eyes on the road it is the optimal location. Not reaching your arm up and having to touch a pad while moving in a vehicle is also pretty optimal. As far as safe driving goes this combination is hard to beat and should be hard to complain about. You don't even have to search for a mouse or pointer.
Coming from the touchscreens on the Ford F150 and Subaru this is a clear improvement in every facet. Lets face it, there is inherent risk in trying to use a touchscreen while driving and this system does a fair job.
Paired with the standard safety features and the Advanced models HUD (SHOULD BE ON ASPEC) this car is about as safe as you can get for ensuring your eyes are on the road. Just think about all the near misses you've seen others or been in yourself and how many are just due to people not looking at the road for whatever reason.

Drives really nice and I live in Alberta and give it an A+ for driving in the snow. one thing i'm confused about is the negative feedback on the infotainment and touchpad. My partner has a 2017 Lexus RX and compared to the Acura , the acura is way better. The touchpad took me a minute or 2 to figure out but now that I've mastered it I would recommend it. I can keep my eyes on the road and just have to put my finger on where I want to click. Its really good. If you're reading neg reviews on it I would say try it for yourself because I've found it way way better than Lexus.

I tested this suv and you are way overblowing the criticism of the infotainment system. After a few minutes it was downright intuitive.

Intuitive? I think that statement is a bit of a stretch...

Norm T I couldn’t disagree with you more concerning the infotainment system. It literally took me no time at all to become accustomed to my 2020 RDX infotainment system. I believe the reviewers who give the new infotainment system bad reviews are really stating their preference or unwillingness to learn a new way to operate an advanced and safer infotainment system. It reminds me of the old saying, “it’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks.” I can’t help but have that opinion because of the ease of operating this new system. I find it humorous actually.

I don't know why everyone 💩s all over the touchpad. I figured it out pretty easily on a test drive. It's a 1:1 ratio w/the screen so it shouldn't be too hard. Admittedly, I do like the simplicity offered by the domestics like my F150 and the Blazer RS I also test drove, but it's not a deal breaker. I think if you don't go in with a bad attitude, it should be pretty easy to adjust to.

Y’all are full of shit if you think a X3 is a better vehicle than this exact model.
The X3 with the same features is probably going to run $10k more than this, and over time will run you dry in maintenance costs.

Everybody pissed and moaned about the dated infotainment system and now that it’s up to date still pissing and moaning. UGH! Way better than Lexus! This car drives like the Porsche Macon and is affordable! Great job Acura. Can’t wait to trade the MDX in for the 2021 MDX type S!

Took me 30 min to get used to the infotainment system.. touchpad makes it very convenient to operate when driving .. , I wished this model had a wireless car charger and little bit more space under armrest.. Acura link app is fantastic and no need for subscription to use built in navigation.. driving this car for almost 2 weeks and loving it...

Touch screens are cheaper to produce than buttons, switches and trackpads, but in a moving car a touch screen NOT (distracted driving) safe or inaccurate oops my finger hit the wrong part of the screen. I have driven or been driven in lots of different vehicles and have yet to find an infotainment system layout that works well, INTUITIVE , safe as old fashion buttons and easy to read. Odd since so many car buyers are obsessed with these systems. They likely add $ to the price, are profitable for the car companies but have features that are outdated for the consumer by the time they are in production.

Didn't glean every last word of this review, but caught one example of why car reviewers have to be taken with a grain of salt...facts. I believe you said the base model comes with leather; I may be wrong, but I believe it is leatherETTE.

I see there's been a class action lawsuit against Honda for the Acura RDX infotainment system, so there are obviously some problems with a lot of them even if every one is not bad. Also some complaints about a "limp mode" problem where the car just loses power while driving. Not too cool... Right now that's what's keeping me from buying an RDX Advanced model.

Touchpad takes a while to master but works fine. It can be confusing and there is much info available to consider while driving. Suggest working with it a fair bit while parked.

I have a 2020 Subaru Outback Limited with a touch screen and it is terrible. You have to touch it just right for it tow work. I will get rid of it soon.
