    When people describe a game as "arcade perfect" for this era of games I always bring up XMen vs Street Fighter on the Sega Saturn, and better yet if they happen to be at my place I show it off. Usually jaws drop when it comes to the loading time and to be honest it still impresses me to this day. I am watching the video now but something that tends to get overlooked for the Saturn port is that once you beat Arcade one time you then have the ability to select the same player twice on the same team. My brother and I would have 4 player Juggernaut fights but the ultimate in seizure inducing madness was when you did the double super attack for Gambit, the game goes almost completely white.
    Much love and thank you for covering this game, it's been 21 yrs since I got my Saturn and I have been singing it's praises ever since.

      The Saturn version loads faster with the 4MB RAM cart because it has enough RAM to do background loading from CD while there is something going on in the game, and there is data that never gets unloaded from RAM (most likely the select screen and character portraits). The Playstation doesn't have any RAM to spare for background loading or keeping things perpetually in RAM, let alone run the game without drastically cutting frames of animation and two whole characters.

      Lassi Kinnunen Saturn's fast loading times is something that is often overlooked. Even 3D games, that don't have RAM expansion can often load really fast for example Sega Rally and Daytona.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  6 лет назад

      It has a slower CD drive. Plus something that nobody ever brings up is how slow the PlayStation and PS2 are at saving data to the memory cards. Even when using a memory card on a Saturn it's much faster.

      Street Fighter III: NG and 2i share a lot of common assets and was ported by Rutubo. Third Strike uses brand new assets (except for the fighters' sprites, which were reused of course) and was ported by Capcom themselves.

    I can't describe how much I love this game. I first played it in 1997 in Spain (I was on vacation) in an arcade. I was blown away. I already loved Street Fighter and X-Men and this two united in a crazy crossover fighting game? There must be a god!
    Sadly, I couldn't afford a Japanese Saturn or a mod and in 1998 I sold my Saturn for a PS1 (yeah, I know ...). BUT few years later I bought a multinorm Saturn and (of course) the Saturn version of XVSF with the RAM cart. Imagine my smile ...

      You can thank the incompent management over in the west for that. If even half the games from Japan had come west the Saturn would have done much better and been much more fondly remembered. I know in my case it is now in retrospect whereas back in the down I hated on the system bc let's be honest the Playstation did have the better overall library and being young enough that I could only afford one system back in the day it was a no brainer at the time.

    • @Bloodreign1
      @Bloodreign1 3 года назад

      @@ThoughtformsOfTheSubconsciousM Without the RAM cart, the Saturn versions would've had to be cut down as well or not even run at all like we know them now (you can't run this, Vampire Savior, Marvel Super Heroes Vs Street Fighter, or SF Zero 3 without a RAM cart). Sony should've played it smart and added RAM cart capabilities, the games would've turned out better for them. The stock Saturn did have a hair more of onboard RAM than the PS1 did, but the expanded RAM capabilities afforded by the carts surely helped.

    Ah yes, X-Men vs. Street Fighter... The game that further established what became the Marvel vs. Capcom series with its fast-paced 2-on-2 tag team fighting and over the top action. I've had the pleasure of playing the arcade version on more than a few occasions. It's a shame the PlayStation port X-Men vs. Street Fighter EX Edition was the only home version released outside Japan (one that wasn't outsourced to an external developer as with X-Men: Children of the Atom); it doesn't hold a candle to the Saturn version or the arcade original, and the Hidden EX Option cheat code for enabling a limited tag team mode (both players choosing the same two characters) fails to do justice.

Side note: did you know there was actually a windows version? Apparently it was released in Korea only. I’ve never seen a dump of it, but the developer’s website has been preserved on the internet archive. It has links to a bunch of patches for the game, but none of them work, not that they’d be usable anyway without the game.

    Good video. The Saturn port is excellent, I played it a lot and still play it from time to time. I am not convinced that the refresh rate is exactly 60fps on Saturn. Sometimes it feels more sluggish, like 30fps. Maybe that the framerate is lowered when too much stuff is happening. I am certain that there is something going on about the framerate in this game...
    Resolution is lower on Saturn, but that's because the CPS--2 uses a weird 16/9 resolution. Still the games were displayed on a 4/3 screen, making the graphics compressed. On Saturn however, the game runs at 320*224 while retaining the full size and resolution of the characters and backgrounds. So when you compare CPS-2 and Saturn, everything looks wider on Saturn. But that's not a problem in my opinion as everything looks perfectly crisp, and this is what matters the most to me. This applies to all CPS-2 games by the way. On Dreamcast they tried to retain the aspect ratio of the CPS-2 games, but that resulted in slightly compressed sprites, which makes them a bit blurry.
    You can select the same character after finishing the game, and that also unlocks two new colors per character. One of the unlocked colors for Zangief makes him blue, which is pretty weird. You should check it out.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  6 лет назад +1

      The Saturn game does have slowdown when things get really busy but I'm sure it's still running at 60fps, just at a slower pace.
      That's true about the strange resolution of the CPS2 board. I wonder why they did that when all of the games on it are 4:3 aspect ratio? On some CPS2 Saturn ports it does give the option of "Arcade screen size" while this is not 16:9 it does widen the play area a little resulting in the character sprites moving off screen a little.

    • @cireza_
      @cireza_ 6 лет назад

      @@RetroCore That's a strange decision for sure. The only reason I can see is that they wanted to make even more detailed graphics, at the price of having them a little bit "compressed" when displayed at 4/3 ratio. The graphics were created with this in mind however. The characters do look really wide on the various CPS-2 ports. The proportions look more "normal" when compressed to 4/3, in the arcade.

    The Saturn port is near-perfect, but suffers from momentary slowdown, some very minimal frames of animation missing and, most notably, Armored Birdie (Sabretooth's partner) shoots lets bullets in her special. But this is about the closest you can get to perfect.

      The arcade game had subtle framerate issues too, especially when run on turbo speed so that’s not too far out of left field. But about the animation, I’ve heard about this but I’ve never seen it compared side by side to see which ones were either missing or altered. I’m really curious about this since as far as I could always tell it was about spot on.

    The PS1 version has a cheat where you can play with the tag-team mode on 2 players mode. But each player chooses 1 character, so both players play with the same team.

    Might get flack for this or not but when people trash all over the ps1 version they tend to forget that the system lived on during its era without any expanded ram.
    The N64’s Expansion Pak increased the ram from 4MB to 8Mb
    The Saturn’s ram options were either 1 or 4 as far as I’ve noticed.
    I remember reading a comment a long time ago that said a rare 8 or 10 MB cart existed for the Saturn and that games like XmVsSf ran even better then before when using the 4MB
    However I couldn’t find anything on it so he might have just been trolling ppl.
    I’d say had a 4or5 MB Ram expansion had been made for the PS1 it would have been almost or as good as the Saturn Ram cart.
    However i don’t think Sony believed it was necessary. Their Console was at the top during that Generation and sold about 100 million units worldwide. It was a common console to find in almost every household at the time.
    I believe the main prob with X-Men vs SF on PS1 was its poor optimization on the console. I believe the game would have ran pretty well as a 1V1 type of game had it been like MvC1 on ps1.
    At first i thought maybe they were very inexperienced with the console and that may have been possible but what makes me wonder is how did they do so well with the saturn for its time considering game developers always say that at the time programming for the system was a nightmare.
    So they might have been just lazy when making the games for ps1 because later games like MvC1 and JoJo look like they were given a lot more effort.
    I believe the best companies on the job were Capcom and Sega themselves. Games like Suikoden and Symphony of the night weren’t optimized that well however and are often considered not that good. MK Trilogy and Gex were 2D games that looked as good as their ps1 counterparts but had those mesh patterns when displaying transparencies.
    I think the best 2D Fighting game imo that showed what the ps1 was possible of was Guilty Gear. Its not as smooth as most Capcom games on Saturn but by god its the closest i’ve found.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  6 лет назад

      Ah, the good old ultra Saturn Ram cart story. Sadly that's just a trolling story. There was a 3D booster cartridge however that neve rmade its way past the prototype stages. It was designed to give the Saturn the polygon power of a model 1 Arcade board. Something that powerful would have blown anything available until the Dreamcast out of the water. Sadly it was expensive and the Dreamcast was coming so the cart never came about.
      The PlayStation could have had a RAM extention at one point until SONY decided to remove the expansion port. This is what ultimately destroyed the idea. Still, even with a ram cart the PlayStation was still slower at disc accessing and general processing speed. So a ram card would have only resulted in more animation but we don't know if the hardware could have handled moving so much at 60fps. PlayStation was designed around 3D which it does very well for its age. The Saturn was designed around powerful 2D arcade hardware with 3D as an afterthought. Both Saturn and PlayStation can do good 2D and 3D but it's clear to see which is each systems strength and weekness. I could play Wipeout 2 on the Saturn and it is very smooth but the textures are lower resolution than the PlayStation. This is the exact same situation between Capcom Fighters being played on the PlayStation. You can enjoy them but they lack features found on the Saturn ports. Even ports that don't use extra ram carts.

    SEGA dropped the ball when they didn't port over X-Men vs Street Fighter for the American Saturn. The PlayStation version was an atrocity, but the bootleg SFC version was even worse! And may i add, why didn't Capcom repackage that game like they did with their Marvel vs Capcom Origins will remain a mystery.

  • @vasileios6301
    @vasileios6301 6 лет назад +3

    Without the 4mb ram cart,Saturn wouldnt have the tag feature and it would be (still) just a little better than the Psx.

    Apparently Sega Europe were in contact with Capcom/Virgin about a PAL release , but they couldn't come to an agreement as to what the price should be, given the game was going to be bundled with the RAM cart (would have been risky releasing a Saturn game for £50-60 in 1998 given the state of things). Real shame too as this and the sequel are some of my favourite 2D fighters.
    The PS port is bad even by the standards of SF games on the system in general. SFZ3 is a considerably better experience (even if the Saturn version of that one is also superior), Ive had the opportunity to play the PAL version of it, quite dreadful actually.

    I was lolling so hard for that sfc hack. I had already seen a video of it.
    PS port is missing alot, but still playable. Which is the most important part of any game. Still agreed a piss poor port

      The PS port is a playable game, I agree with that but sadly its not XMEN Vs Street Fighter. I'll be doing Marvel VS Street Fighter next. That faired better on the PlayStation.

    It's a great arcade offering and played it on the ps1 and in hindsight is a mediocre offering.

    I don't see the point of stacking stock hardware against hardware with an after market RAM expansion, of course it wins. If you want to maintain any semblance of balance it has to be stock hardware against stock hardware, it's not like the Saturn RAM expansions were even part of the regular Saturn set-up outside Japan.

      That's because Sega of America refused to bring out every single game that required them or could have benefited from it here, also you HAD to use the packed in 4 MB RAM cart to play this game as it was not optional. But by your logic of comparing games then you also cant compare any N64 games that use that RAM expansion either? Bottom line is that the Saturn port was and is amazing and it is because of the RAM cart.

      we could make the argument that based on the add on = doesn't count logic, games like Starfox, SNES Doom , Rockman X3 , Virtua Racing, etc, shouldn't be counted because they all use some sort of co processor in the cartridge.

    • @johns6265
      @johns6265 6 лет назад

      Sure, why not? N64 arcade ports that take advantage of the RAM expansion is an incredibly small, possibly non-existent sub-set of the N64 library. Before the internet became mainstream only a small slice of the audience could even access import games, they'd have had no idea that Saturn RAM expansions even existed.

      An incredibly weak argument, you never had to buy separate components and assemble functional Starfox cartridges yourself, PAL amd NTSC Saturns didn't come with the RAM expansion.

      doesn't matter ,its not stock hardware.

    I was hoping for a stripped-down version that still impressed on the SNES, like the Alpha 2 port, but this one is suuuuuper lazy.

      I’m not a PlayStation fan myself but Sony kind of just got lucky with some choices
      1. Ps1- Sega fucked up the Saturn launch as most people know releasing it prematurely and which angered retailers and 3rd party developers. It was also $100 more than ps1 at launch which basically guaranteed that Sony would win that war. Nintendo went the route with cartridges on the n64 which made it hard for developers to develop their games on it with limited space on cartridges plus cartridges were more pricey to produce games in then cds. Ps1 basically was handed all the third party support and fan fare because of its competitors making bad choices
      2. Ps2- DVD player at a time when dvds were popular and DVD players were pricey. No other console at that generation had a DVD player (GameCube has the Panasonic q in Japan but that was much later and didn’t sell well because Japan loves PlayStation). With the ps1 being so popular all the 3rd party support carried over to the ps2 despite the ps2 having weaker hardware then both the GameCube and the Xbox
      3. Psp- With how popular the other PlayStation consoles were this was no doubt this one would be popular as well. The first Sony handheld which felt like a handheld ps2, had a great library of games and was much more powerful than its main competitor the ds. Unfortunately Nintendo was in the handheld market for years and understood that demographic so Sony came in second place behind the ds
      4. Ps3 First time Sony fucked up. Although I read that it actually cost Sony $900 to produce each console, that $600 launch price was just too high especially since the 360 came out a year before that with a much cheaper launch price. This was one of the times where the roles were reversed for Sony when they had the more powerful console but ended up being third place behind its competitors because of a shaky start. Ps3 would eventually barely out sell the 360 in its lifespan due to it having a much better second half than its first half but you couldn’t help but feel they still lost to the 360 and Wii during its prime.
      4. Ps vita- essentially the same reason the ps3 had a bad start, the vita despite being very powerful was just too expensive. Between the price of the handheld itself and then the fact that you had to buy the memory card separately which was also expensive and also the fact that it lacked true backwards compatibility, had this console be the biggest flop for Sony in the console market. It does still have a great library of games and tons of support from Japan and indie games that still exists today.
      PS4- basically the same story as the as the ps1, bad decisions from its competitors made it the default console to buy.
      This is my basic reasoning for the success of most of the PlayStation consoles, ironically when Sony had more powerful hardware than their competitors they actually did worse than when they had inferior hardware

    They should've hacked the SNES version of Street Fighter II The New Challengers instead of using that crappy engine.

      I agree. A high quality sprite hack with modified intro would have been great.
