      I dont think it was ahead they just didn't deem it profitable as there wasn't any competition and consoles were focused on. I hope they make it better and come back I don't like that the portal is a streaming handheld

    • @LPcrazy_88
      @LPcrazy_88 2 месяца назад +41

      @@thenoobreturnz8968 By not profitable do you mean the Vita? Because the PSP was 100% profitable with selling over 80 million units (#11 in best selling gaming consoles). The Vita did end up being an abject failure largely thanks to cuts in game development for the platform and the 3DS completely eclipsing them on all levels. The Nintendo DS released in 2004 while the PSP released in 2005, so there was also very much competition. The Vita released in Dec 2011 (Feb 2012 for NA) and the 3DS came out in Feb 2011 (March for NA). I do very much agree about the Portal, that was a huge disappointment.

    PSP is a great bit of hardware, has a really good handheld library, I really recommend Pilot Academy, a really addictive Pilot Wings inspired game, next good one is Retro Cave Flyer, which is like a spiritual sequel to the Mega Drive game Sub-Terrania, Blast Off is another gem of a game.
    The PSP had great media capabilities, including music that sounds incredible thanks to the high-quality audio DAC and headphone AMP.

    Amazing video! - wanted to shout out a few things. The GPS adventure is amazing and definitely impressed me and made me laugh! Secondly, it's wild to say - but the screen going half pixel dead save for a tiny half cm on the bottom is exactly what happened to mine! No idea what we both did! lol... Lastly - I went through five replacement screens off amazon, all of which were busted and or filled with torn and horrible dead pixels. It's a shock but everyone seems to have the same experience, and I'm curious once you get that replacement screen off amazon. I've ended up going with another PSP like you did. DEFECTUOSA! Lastly part two - first video I've seen on your channel and it was a blast. I'll be watching more!

    Why not just get a Vita? You can just play all PSP games on there with a better screen (OLED) and better battery. And on top of the PSP compatibility, you get Vita games like Gravity Rush, Persona 4 Golden, Hotline Miami, Telltale's Walking Dead, Mortal Kombat, Final Fantasy X / X-2, Terraria, etc.

      Especially with the white headphones and remote control on the PSP-1000 Value Pack, I remember wanting over an iPod because it could game, play music and also hit the web.
      Probably would have fully committed to it as my MP3 player in 2006 if flash storage was farther ahead. Memory Stick Duo was $$$$$ for not a lot of capacity - at least compared to HDD media players of the time... and I had a HUGE library I wanted to carry around.

    So much old memories from this video. Got the original PSP 1000 in the early 2000s with FF2. Left it in one of my table drawers 3 years later. Just took it out last week, charged it up and everything still works including the battery. The older PSP versions are bulkier, but that is fine for me. I put one of those clear Transformer Optimus Prime case when I first got it and it is still in original condition. Such a great system that Sony built.

    On one hand, I'm glad I had a DS (not being able to afford both systems), and I had my fair share of soul-changing experiences on the handheld, but, shoot, PSP was so cool, and had at least a handful of games I really wanted to play, and never really had the chance, until I met my wife, who had a PSP she took overseas with her, so... I have that now. It feels so dang good in the hands (pretty much the perfect form factor - PS Vita supporters need a reality check on that thing), and absolutely has a library of games worth having/exploring/owning. I need to get around to figuring out if the issue with it is just the battery (that I've taken out/disposed of, because I'm not going to wait for it to start its transformation into a spicy pillow), or if there's a bigger problem. Would be nice to pop a new battery in/get a new charger and start collecting for the system/playing some stuff.
    I've still got an old WRT-54G router connected to the network that outputs a 802.11b WiFi signal, which the PSP (and original DS models) need for connecting. I should mess around with that.
    Anyway, this video was especially painful to watch. Thanks.

    1) Use round tip tweezers if you don't want to damage flex pcbs (cables). I doubt that iFixIt kit doesn't have one.
    2) Probably there is some dirt on display flex pcb from fingers which is preventing from good contact, try to use eraser to clean contact pads.
    3) Dont wiggle flex pcbs when they are in connector, last thing that you want to do is to rip apart the traces or damage the connector itself.
    4) If you want to check the connectivity, there is diode mode on multimeters. In this mode the multimeter will beep if you have contact between probes. Touch connector pin with a multimeter probe and with other probe touch the destination point.
    5) When you are soldering, use flux, because soldering process will be so much easier and have a better looking.
    6) Don't "play" with components with power/battery connected, you could literally short components on the motherboard and fry it.

    For the old loud drive, I would have attempted to grease the gears first instead of fully replacing the drive. At least he somewhat acknowledged that in the post mortem section.

    Can you do a PSP vs PSP Vita and let us know which is the preferred emulator between the two? I know the Vita has a bigger and better screen but from what I've read the PSP regulars are more in demand? I could definitely be wrong.

    I started going down memory lane with buying older consoles again last year and the PSP was one of the many I bought. My nostalgia glasses clouded so much of that original PSP experience, omg. UMD games are just painful to play nowadays, from the load times being almost unbearable to the noises this thing can make, it just does not hold up today imo. Especially when you compare the experience you can get with the 3DS. They are both comparable if you put custom firmware, but man I finally get why the DS and 3DS were so popular back in the day.

      I just bought Japan exclusive kingdom hearts psp and I plan on modding it to play all the games off the memory card and only use the UMD drive for the UMD movies I’m collecting. It’s basically gonna be a modern Walkman/DVD player that plays some of the best games ever

    • @LPcrazy_88
      @LPcrazy_88 2 месяца назад

      @@ZenSymphonia Rock on man, I do gotta agree there are some seriously good games that came to the PSP like FF7 Crisis Core, Final Fantasy Tactics, God of War games among others. I just personally hate UMDs, but like you mentioned, playing games off an SD card is an easy solution to that.

    • @HunterAtheist
      @HunterAtheist 2 месяца назад

      Just soft mod it and use an SD card adapter like in the video. Best thing I ever did. Fast load times, no loud disc drive, AND better battery life because it isn't spinning a disc while you play.

    I kinda wish the UMD were a bigger hit than they turned out to be. Even in the age of streaming and digital downloads, having a tangible copy if a great game, movie, or album is amazing.

    When I got my first paycheck, I had the choice of buying a PSP or a pair of really nice workboots (much nicer than I needed). I wanted to make an adult decision and went for the boots. I don't have the boots anymore and I wish I had listened to inner child and went for the PSP.

    This happened too, when I first frankesteined my old PSP. I carefully pulled out the lcd screen with the ribbon cable and when I put it back in its origianl housing, green lines came poppin out of nowhere. Ruined the flex ribbon cable and just had to get another screen. So ur're not alone in this world where we accidentally ruin these fragile ribbon cables from Sony lol

    There's a black PSP (I don't know which version unfortunately) at a local thrift store for $40. It's got a cracked front faceplate (thankfully the screen at least looks fine. It's also missing the battery cover, battery, and charger. I'm thinking about getting it to restore it with a clear shell if it is the final revision.
