  • In Congress Thursday, the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere is holding a hearing titled, “The Myth of the New Cuban Entrepreneurs: An Analysis of the Biden Administration’s Cuba Policy.”
Since no Cuban entrepreneurs were called to testify, Belly of the Beast asked some of them whether they were a myth or not.
“Of course we’re not a myth,” said Carlos Gómez, founder of Cuban film production company Wajiros Films. “The members of Congress who deny we exist have been completely disconnected from the reality in Cuba for a long time.”
The Biden administration has made support for Cuba’s private sector a lynchpin of its Cuba policy, but hasn’t yet to pass a modest sanctions relief package for Cuba’s entrepreneurs, announced nearly two years ago, due to pressure from hardline Cuban-American politicians like Salazar’s ally, Rep. Mario Díaz-Balart (R-FL).
“Instead of debating our existence, they should be debating how after two years they still haven’t passed any concrete measures or solutions for Cuba’s private sector," said Amel Herrera, CEO of Cuban e-commerce firm Acubamos.
