"I'm Nikolas Van Helsing, professor of proctology and other related tendencies. A graduate of the University of Rangoon and assorted night classes at the Knoxville, Tennessee School of Faith Healing."
"You may be a little overqualified for this job."
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Rick Aviles.
In And Out Award Fact: The bulk of the stars in this movie only worked for two or three days.
That's My Jackie Fact: Jackie Chan made one of his first U.S. movie appearances. Inspired by director Hal Needham's notion of including bloopers during the closing credits, Chan began a tradition of doing the same in most of his movies, from this point onward.
Blink And You'll Miss It Fact: At the end of the movie, during the big race to the finish, a black Trans Am appears. The driver of the car is seen in the foot race scene and Captain Chaos' (Dom Delo) dressing down scene. The driver is wearing Bandit's jacket worn by Burt Reynolds in Smokey And The Bandit II (1980).
Director Cameos Fact: Director Hal Needham shows up in this movie four times. First as the EMT in the back of the ambulance, then as the voice of the cop in the speed trap ("Remember when we used to chase speeders?"), then as the truck driver who calls Roger Moore on the CB, and finally at the end of the bloopers.
Historical Fact: The Cannonball Run started as the "Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash" and has since evolved into an unsanctioned speed record for driving across the United States. It is typically accepted to run from New York City's Red Ball Garage to the Portofino Hotel in Redondo Beach near Los Angeles, covering a distance of about 2,906 miles (4,677 km). As of October 2021, the overall record is 25 hours 39 minutes, with an average speed of 113 miles per hour (182 km/h), driven by Arne Toman and Doug Tabbutt.
Automobile Enthusiast Fact: The Ferrari 308 used in the movie belonged to director Hal Needham. The ambulance used in the movie is the actual ambulance that director Hal Needham and screenwriter Brock Yates souped up and raced in the real Cannonball Run. It had been modified with a Landy built 440ci wedge engine , that made it go up to 145 miles per hour (233 kilometers per hour), and was equipped with four gas filler holes, so that the required 90 gallons (341 liters) could be pumped quickly. Needham and Yates didn't win the race (the transmission blew in Palm Springs, California) so Needham kept it in storage for several years, until the time came to make this film. After the movie, he gave it to a church charity, which raised a good deal of money auctioning it off. The 1964 Aston Martin DB5 driven by Roger Moore is the same Aston Martin used in Goldfinger (1964) when it was driven by Sean Connery. The iconic Bond car went through several owners before being purchased by car collector Anthony Pugliese III in 1986 for $250,000. The car was stolen from Pugliese's storage facility in 1997 and has never been recovered.

This was a real race done for quite a few years and many of the characters are based on real people that were in the real race.
