I always learn something new when i watch motoman. I never realized the plastic clip in my lower driverside windshield was a card holder. Secondly this is my new favorite car. Volvo has once again reinvented the automobile.
+tingokuman It is meant for paper parking tickets "pay and display" - not for cards. If you would put a card there and leave the car sitting in the sun for some hours, the card may be fried. (It happened to me when leaving a parking card on the dash in my car.)
We picked up a T6 earlier this week and I'm just blown away from this SUV. I'm a huge fan of BMW and we also considered the X5. I own and owned many BMW's but this SUV, in my opinion, blew away the X5 in pretty much all aspects. The 4 cylinder engine feels anything but a 4 banger, the safety features on this car weren't even available on the X5 and its just such a beautifully done SUV. This is my wife's car but I constantly want to drive it and let her take mine!
Thanks for this review. Just test drove a T8 Inscription with a tow hitch for every weekend purpose of pulling trailer/motocross bike to local tracks. LOVE this vehicle, especially with the new (and as I understand it free) 2017 software upgrade for nearly fully self-driving capacity according to the sales guy. The 1,400 Gothenburg Concert Hall sound setting made me giddy, the fluid air suspension settings were a treat to feel and watch move, the hybrid propulsion is like a fun puzzle to solve and understand, the tablet in the dash would make Jobs proud and its understated bad ass aura (especially with 21' wheels) rather blew me away. My three children and all grown and out of the house. My next car is not for carting the kids around. It's simply for me to enjoy. I get my motosport thrills/jollies on the MX track and trails. The T8/I could well make me feel phat and happy for the years of life on asphalt like no other. Bravo Volvo! Extremely impressed and getting to work now on my wife to increase our budget a bit to get one in our garage as soon as possible.
I have been in a Volvo for the past 22years. presently, I'm in a 2011S-80 inscription with a 3.2 6cilinder engine. It has plenty of power and it rides like a Bentley. I love the S-80 and I can't see myself in any other car.
Excellent video as always Motoman, Volvo has actually walked the walk after talking the talk. When are we going to get a glimpse of that gorgeous green S65 AMG?
MsiEvgaAsusGigabyte The stunning Emerald Green Mercedes S65 fitted with equipment you can't even imagine will premiere the first week of June . . . Belt in.
Yes they do, but they are a investment company, not a car making company ! they have given Volvo the money they needed to produce such stunning new designs and set new standards.
correction. they do make cars in china, but as with Jaguar Land Rover owned by TaTa, they have given Volvo the financial clout only, little if any input into Volvo car designs.
When I saw the Porsche 918 last year, I knew it was going to be the game changer. Superior gas mileage with excellent performance is a winning combination. The e-motor improves the torque and the gasoline has the hp. What is not to like? However, the battery upcharge will slow down sales, it's too expensive for what a battery is.... an old tech source of power. I hope it isn't perceived as a bad idea. This Volvo charged 30% of the battery in about 20 minutes. That is clever engineering that would be great for the masses and the environment.
Just had this car for 4 days driving around Scotland and down to London with 5 pass and bags. Blown away by refinement, comfort and technology. Got 31mpg with 3 overnight plug in charges. Only gripe is that with autopilot it sits too close to the inside of the lane.
Volvo hit a home run with the 2016 XC90. Fantastic SUV which deserves the North American SUV of the Year. The XC90 CRUSHES the Acura MDX and Lexus RX 350.
There is a semi-similar propulsion system in my parent's 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid. The high end market spins it to where the electric part is just an addition makes the feel very different. I would like to see similar hybrid systems as the Accord Hybrid and the XC90 T8 in as many classes of automobiles as possible.
I want to see that propulsion system in every commuter/family vehicle for the obvious reasons of driving dynamics and efficiency...but I would also like battery to be more like the Tesla for a minimum standards of 100 miles on electric. This Volvo XC90 T8 is a serious contender for its segment...maybe the leader right now.
Speaking about the duel power tech, i think every manufacturer should have this on their road map. it will make better work of the noisy start and stop system in most cars when a car comes to a complete stop at a traffic light or when running at a very slow speed. I think most hybrids do this already but i think it is time to adopt it on other cars. While we at it, can we get rid of the light on the side mirror when a car is in your blind spot in favor of the camera system like the one on the Honda accords
They should certainly put this powertrain in all their newer cars. I wish other manufacturers will do this as well, in addition to increasing the all electric range.
This T8-engine in a more sporty S60 would make it my next car. Currently going for a used V40 with the "old" 5-zylinder T5... I don't drive that much, that I really care about a little more fuel-consumption - I want engines with character.
I think the XC90 looks incredible and I love the drivetrain; hell yes I wanna see more stuff like this. One minor nitpick, though... Volvo isn't nearly the first to do AWD with a 2nd electric motor driving the rear axle independently. Toyota has offered that option on the Highlander Hybrid (called 4WD-i) and the Lexus RX400h AWD since 2005. The Acura RLX Hybrid has a similar setup, which actually uses 2 electric motors in the rear driving each wheel independently (in addition to a 3rd between the engine and DCT transmission).
MOTOMAN...I want the propulsion system in the S60 Sedan/V60 Wagon/XC60 Xover...And possibly in a (FINGERS CROSSED) Shooting Brake/Drop Top! Imagine the P1800 Revival w/ 400 Electrified Horses galloping around Calabasas/Malibu Canyon Road...or closer to home, the Dallas North Tollway!
+MotoManTV +Nic Dunbar FWIW, if you live in Europe, you can already buy a Volvo V60 with a drivetrain like this one. Turbodiesel 5-cyl + electric motor up front + 70HP electric motor driving the rear wheels. They claim 0-60 in 6.1 seconds and 31 miles all-electric on a full charge (yes, it's also a plug-in hybrid). Oh, and you can get it in R-Design trim too (which you'll also be able to get the XC90 T8 in).
I would like to see this power train in every segment with different gasoline and motor options depending on the application. If you can make more power and increase fuel economy it is a win win situation for the consumer. With enough economy of scale the cost if the system should decrease allowing Volvo to either lower the cost of the vehicles or add more lightweight material decreasing the overall vehicle weight and thus mpg and performance. Another win win situation.
Once you get the T8, optioned out, you are very close to the cost of the Cadillac CTS-V that I just watched you review on another video. The competition is not between the Volvo and other SUVs as much as it's with high end, high tech vehicles. Which would you get between these two? You sure seemed to like both.
I know the car is heavy and still needs to serve its torque utilities , but does it really make up for the twin charger setup? It would make sense if they did some twin geo turbo setup to save space and increase efficiency because the supercharger forces the engine to work harder in low rpms. If they wanted to maximize the efficiency I think they should have just ran the turbo(s). Its awesome none the less, its the most sophisticated suv available, and still none the less it's my dream SUV right now. Volvo has come such a long way from half a decade ago, Damn good for a mommy brand. Looking forward to more dope Volvo cars. Do I want to see more of this engineering feat, Hell yes, always a sucker for more unique and more efficient engineering!
Very interesting new generation Volvo. I haven't thought about driving a Volvo since the 90s station wagon days. Its a 3 row too! Keep that price under 38k & this is a real winner.
chltmdwp that's unfortunate. For the right price I'm sure this would be a segment leader. Its hard to find a three row that I'd be happy to valet as well road trip with...
I think the Propulsion system would be good in like in cars like the Maxima, Q50 or the CTS and to go down to other cars maybe even to economy car. I think that would nice. Good Video.
Its a very interesting Propulsion System & got lots of potentials... As shown by the P1 & 918. Do I like to see it in more cars & segments? Why not ... It would certainly help improving the technology & make it more accessible Will I own a car with a such system? In this specific configuration, Highly unlikely... But if I get to choose my own configuration, I'd be very tempted. Back to the Grand Cherokee Diesel & Pathfinder Hybrid discussion ... I'm not sure how to put this so bear with me on this one: With the combination of a Supercharger, a Turbo Charger & an Electric Propulsion, it sounds like a ticking time bomb waiting to happen .... Does the added complexity of such powertrain really worth it over a comparable NA V6 (or Turbo 6) over the long term? I mean, for Volvo, its the golden goose ... It helps em with the CAFE regulations, being a 2.0L it help avoid any Displacement\Emission Taxes (reach more markets & become more accessible) & more importantly ... Reduce their operational costs & expanses significantly... Their entire engine line up would be centered around One Block, share most of the parts, but with add-ons depending on the application ... Just like what the Military is trying to achieve with the F35 program (A, B & C have the same engine, but the B gets an Add-on Lift-fan & a swerving exhaust nozzle) But for owners ... (Usually the 2nd\3rd owner) once it starts breaking down ... Time to get another mortgage? Excellent demonstration M!
No i dont want that powertrain in other segments, because when it goes wrong in 10 years it ll be astronomically expensive to fix. Keep it to high end models. Brilliant system though.
I like this car from a design standpoint. The sad fact is the cost of these systems make the car very expensive and heavy so they tend to be put on larger cars. Acura has this RLX sport hybrid (with sport hybrid super handling all wheel drive) I drove s few months back. Boy that made me a believer in electric propulsion quick off the line and in overtaking. Love that the system helped propulsion and improved handling. If the system get lighter and smaller I would like to see Acuras system in a Lighter smaller package with turbos. Like an ILX hybrid or like a the Mitsubishi Evo (which I think will be similar). Handling and power and fuel economy
Good question on whether or not we want this type of mixed propulsion tech on other vehicles, at this point I would have to say let some time pass to see how it holds up in daily use in a variety of climates.
If Volvo wants to introduce a "green SUV", they should develop something similar to the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which is propelled mainly by the batteries, and only use the engine when you absolutely need full power or to recharge the battery for long distance drive. Outlander's PHEV battery system drives all 4 wheels at all times, and is powerful enough for most daily usage, thus it's possible drive for weeks or months without using the gasoline engine at all. On the other hand, Volvo can still have a cheaper, less-green SUV that uses only a gasoline/diesel engine, but preferably with a rear bias AWD system similar to the BMW. This way Volvo would cover both types of SUV markets equally well.
Put that drivetrain technology into sport compact sedans and mid size SUV's. Why? Because the instaneous torque is the substitute for cubic inches. So achieving gobs of torque plus horsepower efficiency from the gas engine means fun for sport tuned vehicle niches. Also an interesting way to get all wheel drive with two electric motors, brilliant. Like the Tesla P85d.
In a Volvo minivan. SUV's might look "sporty" (pfft!), but they're impractical as people and cargo movers (I've owned 4: 2 large and 2 mid-size). I've rented minivans while traveling and they make so much more sense. But, nobody makes a worthwhile minivan, not for the U.S. market, anyway. If Volvo made a minivan based on this new design language and with that drivetrain, it'd be a huge hit.
a COOL vehicle. loads of technology, great design and materials. But I feel like all those new systems, options and modes. It's too much work to think about. I drive a W140. (yes it drinks fuel like nothing else) but it's "turn key go" not "push buttons go weile thinking about fuel electricity options modes plan your trip etc"
+philip s (Dishano) So is my 2001 colt 1.3l but with better fuel efficiency :O If you don't get my irony sir, you are actually comparing apples to oranges! Newer cars are more advanced but you could always leave it in default (hybrid) and get a "turn key go" experience.
+Hao Liu He is complimenting the Chinese when saying they are intelligent enough to not meddle into engineering and design of a proven formula, this is a well conceived and built SUV. In fact when you consider what China has produced as its own automotive finished product you should fully agree with his comment, not come with misinterpretations.
OMG! I never likes Volvas, but if they give me a deep discount, I would buy it! My main interest is the engine! THe Sorento's engine doesn't excite me and is weak. I like "minimalist" and "elegant" desgin...
Pity you yanks didn't get the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV 3 years ago like the rest of the world. Same dual electric motor + ICE engine as the XC90 PHEV, just no super+turbo, but a reasonable pricetag instead.
This could hurt Volvo. It is great technology, but applied to the wrong vehicle. My mother bought the first XC90 and after seven years and 100K miles traded it for a new one. She loves them. She almost bought an XC60, but the ride was too firm for her. She's 85 years old. Do you really think she wants to pay twice as much for tech and performance?
Then perhaps you need a horse and a buggy? Sorry, no disrespect, It's always like this, when new technology comes... there is scepticism - even when the first car was introduced. Or even the bicycle. The unknown can be frightening... "Those who say it cannot be done, should get out of the way for them who are doing it".
One of these days the Americans are going to wake up to modern Diesel engines (which blow gas engines away). I'm not talking about the agricultural style diesel engines which the Japanese and the Americans make currently. In Europe, half of all cars are Diesel.
Do you mean the Volkswagens;? I think the news is that without their "cheat" or urea injected into the exhaust your "modern" diesels pollute around 20X that of a modern gasoline engine.
OK, everyone is impressed with the sound system...but, are the speakers cheap paper? I would bet they are. My "premium" Infinity speakers were 50 cent cheap-ass crap! In 99% of new cars, I would replace the speakers ASAP! I don't trust any mainstream auto reviewers as they don't has the slightest knowledge or passion for great audio sounds. I wish there was a hardcore channel with REAL reviews for enthusiasts!
What r U talkin about ? Super charger WITH turbo - together + hybrid ? NO - we want NO petrol in engines AT ALL ! We want better batteries and more - many more and faster charging stations. This petrol crap - should have NEVER been taken in use on this planet - ever !!!
NoToleranceForIgnorance Whether a country is great or not has nothing to do with the cars they design... Besides. This man is an automotive reviews man. Who's he to judge if Sweden is "a great country" or not? It's just a cringey thing to say.

u said two separate motors that drive both axles??? is that the fact or false statement?

Put this guy on Top Gear instead of Chris Evans........
FYI, the steel spring suspension handles better and has less "float".
Better question is - is this propulsion system better than the V8 counterparts from BMW and Mercedes SUVs?
it's different. extremely different.
Outstanding!!!
It is terrific!
Wait, doesn't the Volt have a similar type of propulsion system?
JustDriveThere The T8 System is similar to the Outlander PHEV. so the XC90 T8 lacks a T-shaped battery pack unlike the Volt.

Is it heavier than the old xc90?
It's lighter. But the T8 version might be heavier due to batteries
This would be towards the middle of the handling spectrum, and closer to the Porsche than to say, an Expedition or Hyundai Santa Fe.
That jacket is waaay too big for you pal.
+nyak63RUS yes, he's wearing the xc90 jacket - he needs the xc60 size.
How much does that model cost....the T8 model?
+Robin Kitonga T8 R-design is 71.000 USD.
T8 Momentum is 69.000USD
Ok thanks.
Would've been a good review, but still there is no need to belittle the Chinese in order to make compliments about this car.
+Hao Liu True!
+Hao Liu I guess Chinese made is a threat to everybody.
+Troy Power You are just sugar coating his words.
No you are misinterpreting.
they finally built a proper suv
The front end looks like an Audi. Nice car.
OMG! I never likes Volvas, but if they give me a deep discount, I would buy it! My main interest is the engine! THe Sorento's engine doesn't excite me and is weak. I like "minimalist" and "elegant" desgin...
YES !!!
Pity you yanks didn't get the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV 3 years ago like the rest of the world. Same dual electric motor + ICE engine as the XC90 PHEV, just no super+turbo, but a reasonable pricetag instead.
Awesome, but, more complicated than a space craft under the hood.......what would it cost to service this shark beyond warranty?
This could hurt Volvo. It is great technology, but applied to the wrong vehicle. My mother bought the first XC90 and after seven years and 100K miles traded it for a new one. She loves them. She almost bought an XC60, but the ride was too firm for her.
She's 85 years old. Do you really think she wants to pay twice as much for tech and performance?
John Carder You still have the normal T6...
Lol awesome. Turpurcharged!
mitsubishi phev has some similar solution
X to the C to the 9 to the 0..
I'd rather not see something this complex in other vehicles.. Way too much that can go wrong
Then perhaps you need a horse and a buggy? Sorry, no disrespect, It's always like this, when new technology comes... there is scepticism - even when the first car was introduced. Or even the bicycle. The unknown can be frightening...
"Those who say it cannot be done, should get out of the way for them who are doing it".
minivan! give me a 4wd minivan with a pure electric rear axils
Hello MotoMan.. you look veri excited about a concept copied from Toyota RAV4 Hybrid :)

+tigerbalm The Speakers are B&W, they don't do paper.
+Tobias Carlén It is proper aluminum membrane.
What's in your pocket?
better call moto man
Unrefined that is why small engines suck why couldn't they take the s60's t6 and make a hybrid from that
i hope tope to
Yanks just love their green screens eh ? Is he a friend of Anderson Coopers ?
volvo has 500 horse power
Resales value is a crap
Ehh
dkm
What r U talkin about ? Super charger WITH turbo - together + hybrid ?
NO - we want NO petrol in engines AT ALL !
We want better batteries and more - many more and faster charging stations.
This petrol crap - should have NEVER been taken in use on this planet - ever !!!
no, we don't want that
"Sweden, it's still a great country.".
*cringe*
+Victorhuhu Why?
NoToleranceForIgnorance Whether a country is great or not has nothing to do with the cars they design... Besides. This man is an automotive reviews man. Who's he to judge if Sweden is "a great country" or not? It's just a cringey thing to say.
