The Art of Canning the Sea

- Canned fish has been around for over a century and has been enjoyed around world. Still, no one loves their fish more than Portugal, where old traditions of fishing, canning and trading have come together to create an art form. What first began as a method of preserving fish in the 19th century has now become a strong part of Portuguese identity. Although, globally, many factories have moved to fully industrialized processes, one factory in the north of Portugal maintains their artisanal roots, fueled by the hands of its passionate workforce and delivering a taste unlike any other.

Only Great Big Story can make canned fish seem to come out from a Wes Anderson movie
I'm portuguese and I agree with you lol
As Portuguese it makes me really happy to see this. Our canned fish is so underrated in our own country but it's the only sector of fishing that we actually get profit from.
If you are from another country, please don't forget to try some of those in gourmet restaurants, the quality is unbelievable and the flavours just as great, taste a bit of our culture!
Thank you Great Big Stories for the great video!
Those packaging designs are beautiful!
I remember first learning about this from Bourdain--- craftsmanship in a product that most Americans at the time saw as having a fairly low ceiling. It was so amazing-- especially as I eat probably 5 cans of sardines/tuna/smoked oysters every week now.
Thats a lot of heavy metals dude. Might want to cut back some lmfao
Do you have a brand of sardines you would recommend?
F for respects
@@aldralee ramirez is the best imo on the quality/price at least
@@Guerrilla727 Sradines are at the bottom of the food chain. They contain no heavy metals.
Nice to watch this video on another country’s culture. This video shows us that we often take things for granted without realizing the historic importance behind it.
See u everywhere.
Did u see the canned fish marked cocaine
Are you stalking me? I se you everywhere😂😂
Literally everywhere bro...
What does Heavy Metal music, Copywriting and Can Foods youtube videos have in Common?
I'm from Belgium and I've lived in Porto, near Matosinhos and I really loved the place and the food
My beautiful hometown of Matosinhos on Great Big Story, who would have thought? Awesome vídeo once again! 👏
can you tell me what brand canned sardines they are....thank you
T C The ones that appear mostly on the video are from Pinhais (conservaspinhais.pt), but you also have Portugal Norte (portugalnorte.com) and Ramirez (ramirez.pt).
A few years ago I visited Portugal and dined at a tinned seafood restaurant. One wall was covered with shelves of canned fish...the variety was amazing. Japan also has tons of high quality canned seafood. It's very underappreciated. Excellent video. 👍👍
Every once in a while, GBS makes great videos like this that seems like an intro to an interesting documentary that will never be made...
The packaging is so aesthetically pleasing to look at.
I love this channel, always sharing cultures and traditions makes me want to go and try every single one of them in the future
Incredible filming and editing on this video. Beautiful story.
Great Big Stories videos always want to make me cry. They are just so emotional and well put together.
Holy carp, you did an amazing job with the video shots, storytelling and the title! Watching these videos make my life worthwhile.
love, love, love this channel!
This Video is so structured and well told! Really enjoyed this one, seeing the culture out of different people's eyes...
The best video title I've seen all day!
The captions is really helpful
Damm it , I'm Portuguese and obviously understand every thing they say, but I cannot stop my self from reading the subtitles, it's so distracting xD
Eva Marques I'm Brazilian and had to read every single subtitle... Can't understand Portuguese from Portugal...
@@ForeverManFunny thing, in Portugal everyone understands Brazilian Portuguese, partly because we are very used to watch Brazilian telenovelas, movies etc. Everyone my age grow up watching " O sitio do picapau amarelo", " New wave" "Malhação" Brazilian Portuguese it's always present.
Im brazilian and the words are basically the same, but the accent is so different and i feel like portuguese from portugal is spoken faster than the portuguese in brasil.
Great video and i liked this discussion here (: have a nice day!
im a filipino the only word i can underdtand is the numbers and lolo, tradisyon, and other few 😶
I speak Spanish and understood almost everything
the packaging design in each on is nice and beautiful

Get "BELA" they are cooked within hours of the catch. HIGH in all the best nutrition available on earth...blows away Salmon.
Also try NURI AND MABUTI, you can find them at Filipino grocery stores specially seafood city, they have locations all over the US
try nuri
This is weirdly beautiful
The cans at the store in Porto are so pretty, I had to slow down the video just to appreciate the artwork.
Awesome vid with a fantastic topic - The subs are so hard to read on the bright or patterned backgrounds though.
i got say, those are some pretty fish caning brands. or however you put .3.
How do you get that master fisherman title? Sounds cool
Meu belo País!!
excellent work Portugal
I felt in love with Portuguese canned sardines from the specialties shop in Lisbon. Non of the brands I get at the grocery store from where I live would even match 10% of the original taste.
*_is it possible to learn this power?_*
kremit the frog (insert Star Wars quote that I forgot)
Love ur pfp
Not from a Jedi.
You can do it even better then they can ! just wear gloves.

How are the sardines cooked?
These videos are awesome
Ahhh it makes sense now. I was confused why there was a sardine store in the airport.
You guys make the best videos! :-) I loved the introduction.
Looks delicious
That BPA though!
0:43 sounded like the intro to a brockhampton music video
I don't eat canned sardines a lot but I'm craving them now
Where can i buy these im in los Angeles
Jerik Apuli LAX. Right before you hop on a plane to Portugal
I have an interest in canning jarring and preserving food. Wonder why...
I somehow knew this was in Portugal
Good video
I've really gotten into eating sardines lately and I really enjoyed this video.
sardines are so Good!
This video has many instances of white subtitles on light backgrounds. It's hard to read. Please switch to something like white text with black outline for future videos.
Pinhais in Portugal (Porto) and the the best ones imho are French ones from La Quiberonnaise
Bora Portugal!!!
So.... how does it taste?
FlamingSC Fishy
When the put oil in the can, they dipped all the way in...how about the bacteria around and underneath the can
if you watched the video they explained what the 3 machines does after the hand process.
Love your vids
Canned tuna/sardines/codfish with chicken peas, tomato, lettuce, onion olive oil, vinegar, some chesse and egg, add some mayo if you like, it is to die for on summer days
I wrought they are canning water
☩ In Portugal we trust ☩
No Fish were harmed in the making of this video (LOL)
Looks like a very neat process. Had never given it much thought.
💐
Ola
2:11
see his reaction to that stupid question asked to a factory head
Orgulho nas nossas tradições 🇵🇹
Beautiful
2:56 is that a word?
That sound is typically made when the letter 'r' is at the beginning of a word. In this case the word is 'representa', which in European Portuguese sounds like 'hcheprezent-uh'
From what I could hear sounded like "Eu pensar que esta tradição, já está de minha família quatro generações, representa muito na história deste país, para mim só pode ser um orgulho."
The dude just went real heavy on that inital R so it sounded like he was clearing his throat, haha.
I love to have sardines with soy sauce in the morning, and I dont like many fish.
Glory Sky I eat mine with loaf French bred and butter lol
I wonder if the industry is still okay during this pandemic
It has been 2 years, but it did boom a bit during the pandemic, at least in the beginning. Makes sense, with everyone avoiding unecessary socialization and a bit of fear from how long things will take, most people bought a lot of canned sardines and tuna. By now things normalized, ofc. And is good for the canning industry.
Imagine the smell.
Should’ve been titled “the art of whistling”
This is more of an ad, than a story... and I'm portuguese.
My dad is from Portugal and I saw him eat sardines right from the can, all the time when I was growing up. I tried it a few times and I just couldn't get used to it.
Me2 I guess we had to have been brought up like them to eat it like that..my father passed away 3 years ago and thanks for bringing that up it brought back memories
I've never had sardines but now I want to have a sampler pack of them. Anyone know what the name of the factory in this video is?
Omg I LOVE NURI AND MABUTI, the best brands, better than connetable
ancient greeks used to preserve whole fish in pots ...the first form of canning
Cloudy with a chance of meatball... the father.
I love these stories.... You needed to narrate some of the longer interventions of the owner because there's a segment that is full of Portuguese with subtitles, but would be great to put an English voice with the owner's voice in the background.
Hi
There is something in common between Pinhal and Genesis.. a human touch!!!!!.
THANKS YOU GOODNESS 🌟 SARDINES AMAZING ❤️ 🖤💚🤎 FAMILY DAPHNE COTTON ALWAYS 💜,
Just spent $28 on Nuri spiced sardines on Amazon Prime 🤦♂️
Lol, I did the same thing yesterday! 🤣
*My Dream Job is to be a Sea Canner*
while i was watching this i was eating canned tuna
anyone know where I can buy a can?
All we need is 6 of these "master fishermen" and you got yourself a reality show where they catch fish
The title.
The best canned sardines I've ever tasted hard to get hold of where I live though sadly.
Graeme Nicol whats the company name sold in the US? Would love to try them
I love it. But if we only talking about the taste it’s overated.
I went that that shop afew years ago when i was on a holiday there
entendi quase tudo, acho legal um país com a cultura completamente diferente que o meu falar a mesma lingua :)
That fisherman guy had beautiful eyes ☺️
*the art of high blood pressure*
I thought it was gonna be like that canned air thing
Portugal aii!!
Everytime I hear portuguese language it sounds a little bit more beautiful 💙
You know youre a master fisherman when you got eyes as blue as the sea.
Why aren’t they were gloves when touching/packing the fish in oil?
Because it's not needed
@@lucky43113 how’s that?
Nice to watch a video with no politics
Me after watch this
Woah
