It's amazing that opensource, community funded projects can be better than their for profit counterparts. They do so much more with much less resources. :D
Linux is a great example.
Windows is such a shit show and its not cheap at all. Its insane to me
Open source is about the only way to make safe software these days. When money gets invovlved, interests change.
Those FOSS videos are really great! Keep them coming pls!
So much value, respect. I’ll start donating you bro
I think you missed out on Blender. It’s seriously awesome and while you can find closed source alternatives that do similar things there’s nothing quite like it for versatility, extensibility, and wide usability.
Great review for privacy thank you.👍😎
I installed fedora yesterday. It is really impressive how much Linux evolved recently. It is a enjoyable experience. I'm not ready for changing to Linux permanently as I game a lot on 4k and need each of those fps for playing hahaha. The difference from 30fps to 35 is massive.
Actually GNU/Linux is an enjoyable experience since a very long time and your comment proves that except for not serious things like gaming, the FOSS platform is already more than enough for every usage ;)
Stop wasting time. Drop the games.
There are actually games that run better on Linux than on Windows.
@@professorfukyu744 we are live for happiness, Gaming is happiness,so it is not wasting time lol
@@sanjai784 thanks for making this clear. What are we working for else than having fun from time to time
Nice Video, already use most of these services.
The great information this channel provides is very helpful, but it would be even more so if you would put links in the description to the software you mention in your videos.
Big fan of you mr. henry
great content
Interesting- have to look into these, thanks
Wonderful list👍👍
Agreed, except Calyx. Graphene seems to be more stability. No errors, clean updates, everything works smooth. I would like to use Calyx. Maybe my knowledge isn‘t far enough...
But I‘m thankfully for all these guys doing this hard work for us!
Good video!
You sir, are a legend!
Good stuff, good stuff.
Bitwarden has "Sent" built in so you can send files over that. Not sure on size limit though.
i haven't used onion share thanks for suggestion😉😉
00:00 Introduction
00:40 Breave browser
01:32 Signal messenger
02:18 Bitwarded (password manager)
02:58 Foss Opertating Systems
04:38 Onion Share
I use brave, bitwarden and LineageOS, planning to migrate to MicroG LineageOS
2 years later, tired of my data being harvested so I installed grapheneOS. So far I'm loving it. Main desires on phone is calling, texting, secure messaging, and decent navigation.
Anything else is bonus.
Wondering why grapheneOS is not on this list and if it would make it in 2022.
Last I tried, which is more recent than this video, was importing my text messages into Signal. It got most.. but excluded MMS messages (lengthy texts & images). I deleted it for the time being, but really hope they can fix that.
And now the ones you have forgotten:
Vlc
Postgresql
Gcc
Every good neural network library (Tensorflow, Keras, Torch, ...)
Blender
Godot
Every Linux desktop (Mate, Gnome, KDE, Lxde, ...)
Nginx
Gazebo
OpenCV
OpenAL
Pulseaudio (despites all the critics in the past, the last few years it has become aweasome)
ROS
Lots of text editors (Geany, notepadqq, atom, vim)
Every good programming interpreter which language is still used (python, Php, Bash)
OBS
Lutris
Wine/Proton
OpenGL and Vulkan
OpenXR
I might still be missing a lot.
The 4 dislikes on this video are people who use non-privacy softwares
Too true, FEED THE ALGORITHM!!!
1K like vs 8 dislike, fake dislike?
They are developers who support proprietary software which i support.
Could also be guys who think Tor browser the best browser in terms of security and privacy and Brave is so far behind, that it is hard to understand what Brave is doing in this list.
For the same reason, why Bitwarden, when KeePass provides so much more security and privacy?
Why Signal, which needs your phone number (a personal data) to work, while you can use Briar or Matrix?
Or why a android based OS for your phone, when there are alternatives that don't share the same code base, to they don't expose you to the any of these threats and privacy issues?
And while I liked the video, I see why some people could find this video too "normies oriented" with not enough real privacy/security combos for someone concerned about this issues.
@@skylinecyber3538 honestly proprietary isn't bad inherently, you may not make enough money with foss. However most proprietary stuff is not private.
happened to know any open source offline sharing apps? if i wanted transfer my files between my mac and my android phone
Henry for president!
Did you show case pop-os already? I am so happy with it :)
Why do you need a review if you already use it and you are already happy to use it?
Do you think you might be wrong to be happy if Techlore doesn't share your point of view, or would you feel validated it Techlore says good things about your OS?
@@wrenchdisroot2451 really just want to show it to others :)
I generally use fdroid as my standard for 24k Foss
I wasn't knowing how onion share works, thanks for letting us know
When you use 4 of these
Make video on best andorid open soruce keyboard plzzz
I find that small tools tend to be better when they are FOSS, major FOSS software developed by companies also tends to be high quality.
Nice.
Please make a video is online shopping is safe for privacy?
Any FOSS app for payments and banking?
i used brave for 2 days now and with many youtube tabs open and still better then chrome got almost 4 to 5 percent cpu temperature drop
How do I harden Brave Browser on desktop? I know Firefox is better but this is for my dad and he prefers chromium. What extensions do I need or not need so I dont have a unique fingerprint?
ublock origin :)
Check "TheHatedOne" youtube channel, He's got great video on that.
@@RyuFitzgerald He's asking how to harden the browser not find out his browser fingerprint
Brave: adblock built in WITH BUILT IN EXCEPTIONS for big tech tracking like google, Facebook etc..!
Danke
Please do a video on Windows 10 Ameliorated edition.. It claims to be privacy friendly and telemetry free
Godot is a FOSS game engine that beats unity in a lot of different ways it's still pretty young but it's got a lot of promise.
Portmaster is amazing.
Jitsi Meet over Zoom
Onion share is actually the best
Brave vs Hardened Firefox
I'm split between each
please give your opinion
I used to use Brave, but switched to hardened Firefox a few months ago. I personally prefer hardened Firefox to Brave. You can set it up just how you’d like and it feels more lightweight than Brave since it’s Chromium based. I do still use Brave on my tablet and phone. I also like that Firefox isn’t based on Chromium.
Both
Whats about ungoogled chromium?
No sms/chat app is secure even signal as long as registration requires phone number. The problem with website are making it hard to use wihtout them accessing our private data like cookies.
Just buy a sim with cash then toss it after
Any other option for onion share that works on mobile?
You can download an Onionshare file from any mobile browser that connects to Tor. Upload no AFAIK
All great suggestions, but trying to get the lay person to change their habits (re: Signal vs WhatsApp) is something I've given up on. People just want simplicity over privacy.
I wouldnt say simplicity. They just dont care about their privacy and just follow the mainstream.
Signal ist simple. PopOS is simpler than Windows10...so...
@@TheVertical92 I don't think I agree with that entirely. Sure some Linux distro are great for people used to that sort of stuff, but not Joe Six-pack or Molly Soccermom.
Simplicity doesn't necessarily mean ease of use, it's the entire process. Buy a PC with windows preinstalled, not having to think about the process, or using the same software as everyone and not have to ask everyone how to reach them is far more simple than seeking out a Pop OS distro, installing it and learning how to use it, or getting a messager app, trying to figure out who's using which, having one for some and another for others... It's a massive pain in the ass especially to someone who's not a technophile.
I think people (at least around me) make a conscious choice to go simple. That's not to say they don't care, more that they prioritise, and if offered equal simplicity, would probably choose privacy. Caring about privacy is a gradient, not a binary; lack of education makes the position on that scale pretty low because again, common folk don't necessarily have the context to appreciate what impact lack of privacy entails.
Some people I know totally don't care, but others don't seem to care because they don't evaluate the impact with a full deck.
My 2 cents. :)
@@pixlplague youre right. I just thought you mean ease of use.
Like you said: Most people just use what is commonly used (thats what i meant with "follow the mainstream").
But i agree with your 2 cents.
Use Krita if you are into digital painting. You won't regret it .
I just realized how much better MP3 sounded than .m4a. So, I watched a few videos by audiophiles and they say .flac and .wav sound far better than MP3 audio files. What are the best FOSS apps for Android (preferably from FDroid) and PC using Debian Linux that will play .flac and .wav and e around for a long while (still get updates once in a while)?
I use VLC
@@nonya_bidness I did notice that I can use playlists on it. I thought the sound wasn't as good as on mpv or Parole, but I'll test it again.
Google CEO disliked the vid. Along with 3 buddies.
Mattermost (discord/slack alternative )
What about GrapheneOS for phones?
GrapheneOS is currently king of both privacy and security. Edward Snowden endorses it as being the best in the business. Only Pixel phones are supported.
*Could you talk about how Brave is better than Hardened Firefox?*
This was never stated
@@techlore I didn’t say it was though... I’m just curious if you could make a video on how Brave is better than hardened Firefox? Or vice versa if that’s not the case. The tone of this video implied it’s better from a (unique) fingerprinting perspective but I feel these points could be elaborated upon.
Gotcha. It’s not a clear winner by any means. Each seem to have very distinct pros/cons which are pretty thoroughly covered in things like our Go Incognito browser lessons, and even our top 5 best privacy browsers video.
@@techlore Cool, yeah I’ve seen all of your videos, just curious if in recent days anything else has changed. I also think a cool video would be hardened Firefox vs hardened brave. Seems to be a hot topic over on Reddit on which is better. Cheers!
Firefox former Netscape, I think
Henry you should try Manjaro linux
I am using it right now as I am typing it. Definitely one my fav distros.

I don’t think you can
I know this is a 1 year old video
1. Brave: ehm , it is not that it is bad but it has its share of issues and "events"
Saying that Line is a better OS than its counterparts is like saying that a Ferrari is better than a tractor. Well yes on a well paved road or in a track of course , but on a farm? and the opposite . That is and will always be based on use case and preference (unless somehow devs will start supporting all OSes equal)
what does foss mean?
Free and Open Source Software
Open Source means that the source code is available to check for unwanted things like data collection. So open source software is generally good for your privacy.

Yes Telegram is indeed great but it's not a free software

Bitwarden? Why not keepassxc thou!?
bcs Bitwarden is more convenient to use.

I can't agree with Brave - browser allows Twitter and Facebook trackers; generates referral links for some services; connects automatically to Brave servers and sends data to third parties; auto-updates cannot be canceled. But the browser is great! I'm waiting for someone to create the perfect fork without spying. Brave has Tor and beats fingerprinting, a built-in torrent client based on WebTorrent and more.

Brave? - - - - > Bromite is way better. Brave uses the 'privacy storytelling' in their advantage, but.. I don't trust them.
That's true. Brave has great functionality, but sells data. Bromite is nice, but only for Android :( Anyone can check Ungoogled-chromium.
Brave ? Safe ? Then, Why I always find AVG Spyware and Fakesbook in the cookies section of Brave even when I never use that services ?
Everyone suggests SIGNAL as a secure messenger, but the app needs too much permission, why nobody talks about that issue?
lol, I don't know which signal app you are using

You missed the best foss software. It's "blender". I never saw such a powerful open source software. Blender is not just a software it's a religion.
Though not directly stated, this video was more targeted at privacy & security tools.

Signal isn't good in Bharat, even the messages take 3-4 seconds to deliver.
I live in India too. I didn't experience the issue you are talking about. Could just be an issue related to your network.
