RUclips Vanced?
I’m surprised Funkwhale wasn’t mentioned
Well you forgot about the best foss online music player:
BlackHole
Emby self hosted server?
Just wanted to say I don't mind your sponsor and appreciate your decision to go ahead with them!
Monero is the best cryptocurrency available, perhaps the only one worth using.
Thanks tech lore for covering this topic, it’s really I subject no one ever talks about. But still an important topic in this digital age
In my opinion, you should download your music. In the present day, it's not illegal and you won't go to jail. Plus, for whatever reason, if your music is removed from whatever service you use, you're screwed. It's all up to you, but that's what I recommend.
That's a fair recommendation. However, I think this is good for people who do use those services and want to know more. Thanks for your input!
I completely agree. I have no idea when most people decided to stream their music rather than have it offline on their device. I will never, repeat. Never rely on anything that needs an internet connection. Everything must be usable offline without an internet connection. That goes for software, videos, music.
Where you can legally download music that doesn't rely on a service?
@@robertpaulson8790 the only music that I managed to download legally was soundtracks bought in Steam
you can paste them into an SD card
unsure about non-game music though
@@robertpaulson8790 I like Bandcamp although they don't have much mainstream music.
I use Syncthing to keep my Music library updated on all my devices. When I add new music to my desktop, I know that it'll be there on my tablet and phone within minutes.
Syncthing is great - if your mobile device has a lot of storage space, or it has a recent enough Android version which allows Syncthing to write to an SD-Card. I have neither, so I have to copy stuff from the internal drive (or my PC) to my phone's SD-Card.
Napster has been surprisingly good since using it and on Aurora it only has the one firebase tracker, but I do agree with others having music downloaded or a separate mp3/flac player is the way to go.
Great job! Honestly wouldn't have thought of it, never realized how invasive music streaming apps are.
I like how yt music is such a bad option it's never even mentioned
This was a cool video. I haven't even thought about something like this before. Great video
As a Newpipe user I can say it's a pretty good option, One thing missing on the video is that you can even export your "profile" to other phones, that is: playlist, subs, history, etc. The only thing I don't like about it is that in order to listen to music offline you have to download it with no way of listening to it other than your local music player
Finally some one else who uses new pipe in the same way💀
Good timing. I was recently trying to get rid of Spotify and use better alternatives but couldn't find anything. In the end I opted for downloading my music and using a better music player for my needs. I still haven't completely got rid of Spotify but I'm slowly getting there.
RUclips music outside of the app on anything else but desktop is torture. It’s insane how bad it is.
Yeah on mobile it's horrible, they try to force you on the mobile app
It’s not only horrible it’s actively working against you e.g. random stopping of music, you CAN’T turn off video, while in background it can’t start the next song etc. It’s actually unusable as a replacement.
@@owlmostdead9492 yeah also the ui, let's just say looks like RUclips things
This was incredibly helpful! I typically use AppleMusic but have been thinking about switching back to an old iPod. I suspect with the new iPhone offerings coming in the future, I will no longer be upgrading and that CalxyOS Pixel I have will come out of the closet (so to speak).
One question - does Monero work with any of the hardware wallets that are offered? I have a Ledger Nano and I'm pretty sure it doesn't work with that unless I'm missing something.
Also would be good to mention if you have a Mega account the mega app will let you stream audio you have saved
There are 100 and 100 examples of private music streaming for RUclips Music
There are also Spotify applications like Spotube or Moosync + others which don't work
All are terrible because they have huge difficulties with running Spotify music with their public API
I mostly use Spotify for discover weekly so I could just copy it to YT
Henry, this is great. Do one of these for news apps please
For me using an API to download music directly from deezer's servers bypassing the app and giving deezer no usage information has done me wonders. From there I just treat all my music as purely local. For any music not on deezer or not available through their servers directly I can download the music elsewhere and add it to my local music app no problem. The metadata being standard it will automatically be sorted properly no matter the source.
MP3/FLAC players and backup on 2 HDDs (one SSD one old school spinny disk) ANd my car player can play FLAC which is a bonus as I've a LOT of FLAC files.
That second user feature is the only one that i like in samsung one ui known as Secure Folder
I use it to install apps like whatsapp, facebook, instagram
Because of secure folder my photos are safe or they don't have access to all my photos
Also, Apple Music pays almost double what Spotify does per stream. Not as much as Tidal or even close to as much as what an artist would get from a song being bought directly but it's nice to see that Apple Music as a more privacy friendly streaming service also does slightly more for supporting musicians if you decide to use it. Thanks for the video!
Buying the CDs and going to live concerts to also buy some merchandise is the best way to support music. Apple and Spotify are just "middle men", they skim their percentage before musicians see anything.
I used to switch between Spotify and Apple Music every few months, but now I will just stay on Apple Music
There's also Transistor on F-Droid.
Is Cider still a good alternative for privacy if I buy it from the microsoft store on windows?
I downloaded all my favourite albums in FLAC highres format and play it in Poweramp (for Android) & Foobar(for windows~which is open source)
What's your opinion on Warden on Rooted phones?
It allows you to disable trackers and loggers per-app.
6:24 me internally screaming "SYNCTHING!!" 🤣🤣
I'll continue to caveman it. A 70GB collection of music -- modest by some measures -- that provides well over 30 consecutive days of non-stop listening that I listen to on a GNU/Linux PC or is synced to my AOSP phone and fits very easily on a microSD card.
I have a lot of audio dramas as well, I think all together they come to about 300 hours of audio. Though I think it all takes up less space than yours haha so you might have more
Me too. I just hope (although somewhat futilely) that the younger generation will rediscover offline (not physical) media.
@@negirno well I'm under 20 so there's still a few that see the benefit haha
RUclips to Mp3's the way to go.
i use an ipod touch without data, connect via wifi to download then back to airplane mode. it ONLY has spotify and pocketcasts. i otherwise use android for everyday phone so apple id not connected to anything except sporadically used itunes on pc and the ipod
How does Plex compare? Not open source for sure, but self-hosted at least
Vinyl records never tracked me
Thank you for the video and your work for such educative videos!
I'm still using Spotify and while I actually kinda want to leave it, I'm still too used to it mostly due to convenience reasons I guess. What I do though is to block the embed nasty trackers with my blokada DNS and also their email trackers, so this at least something. Apple music is not really an alternative since I'm on Android and I'm still to reluctant to give up the comfort modern streaming services offer me :(
I'm also on Android and I can't switch to other services since Spotify has really great recommendations
apple music in on play store m8. greetings
It looks like if i’m sticking with freemium options (i will move to Apple Music...one day) then spotify is the more private option compared to deezer, going by the number of trackers? Should the number of permissions also be taken into account or are trackers the main thing to avoid?
Plex seems to work for me. I don't use streaming services. As a musician I'd rather support the artist directly by buying their mp3s. Spotify screws over artists unless they have large followings
Can you make a video on private calendar options?
Is there a program that works just like new pipe but for Linux desktop?
Self-hosted Jellyfin, but ovbiously you need a good mp3 collection loaded to it.
Techlore can you please make a video on Firefox Relay and DuckDuckGo Email Protection and what will happen if we combine them
Thank you 😊
I must admit that I had never considered Apple music before, but it does seem like a pretty good option for both privacy, convenience and creator revenue. Of course it doesn't beat buying the music on bandcamp or directly from the creator, but the convenience of streaming can't be ignored. I'm happy that I learned about this!
It's not private if Apple (or any other evil corp.) knows your habits. Stop falling for the hype and sales pitch.
@@terrydaktyllus1320 Nothing is 100% private dumdum.
If you have access to previously unreleased information about the data collection apple music does, elaborate.
Or stfu, either way nobody gives a crap if all you're gonna say is "whinge whinge, that's wrong"
@deh You are fooling yourself if you believe Apple is any better than Google, Microsoft, Facebook or Amazon.
For me, I use a modded Spotify client which blocks ads and allow premium-like features for free.
Now, I understand that the best privacy music solution is just download songs and listen to them that way.
You will be missing out on something like discover weekly playlists, top 50 global, and release radar which based on your music preference will give you songs weekly.
There is truly nothing free in this world since if you use Spotify then you are paying with your data.
Henry, Is there a solution for this problem? Can we get the release radar and discovery weekly playlist on a privacy option?
If we use the web version (Which has a 128kb sound quality only option), will that protect us?
I also like Spotify because of their good recommendations, I suggest turning off all the unnecessary data collector, don't use Google or Facebook account (use an email and password or use a simplelogin/anonaddy email alias), don't give them unnecessary permission like microphone
"nothing free in this world" ??? Try Internet Radio with a program such as Streamwriter for Windows, which allows you to listen to thousands of stations and download the tracks automatically. The Macintosh has also had similar programs for decades.
what client do you use?
@@aich5myqj9r7 As I said, I use Streamwriter on PC. I also use Snowtape on Mac and Radiosure on PC. There are good alternatives to those clients, depending on the OS versions.
spotify also has open source linux client
What do you think of Nielson?
If youre on Android and have root access, you can lock down stuff like Spotify a little more.
Soundcloud and bandcamp are hell too?
I was looking for something like cider a few weeks ago and couldn’t find anything. This is perfect. iTunes is severely outdated on windows.
Spent so much time on the decent options and just ran through the alternatives... You should compare only the good ones to Spotify directly. How exactly is the experience compared to Spotify? Otherwise I'm not switching
VLC?
Could someone explain me in simple terms what data Spotify collects about me? Because I generally don't understand why would I want to hide it in the first place. It's not personal emails, messages or the fact, that I communicated with somebody. It's just my music tastes, my name, date of birth, country and email, right?
I think BlackHole is a great option from f-droid
What about qobuz and roon?
Where is Plex??
Musi is great though I don’t know how secure it is though
This video was everything I didn’t know I needed and wanted. 10/10
Battery powered DAB radio is a decent option also!!
No bandcamp
I get Spotify for free and I can't let go of personalized recommendations and Spotify playlists.
I gave away crucial data years ago when I signed in and I don't care that track my listening habits are being tracked.
The convenience is just too high and this
never stopped them from banning my Account though because I'm registered in the wrong one
Being an audiophile and datahoarder already makes me private cause i don't use streaming services lmao, arrrrr.
It's dumb if you have to have internet everytime to listen to your music, download your own shit people, hard drives are cheap. I have zero streaming accounts.
In my exp the apple music app on android is TERRIBLE
RUclips Music is feeling left out lol
If i use spotify on iOS, with tracking disabled, I should be mostly covered right?
No, not really
@@melikepork7906 why
@@Ale-to3fv it tracks all your moves inside its own app by logging into it. It just can't track you across other apps.
@@cjcq7 well they know what i listen, that is not a problem for me, i was worried about ip, and other stuff on my phone
@@Ale-to3fv it still knows your IP, Apple and device ID, phone number, etc...
What about Kazaa or Limewire
What is this, 2005?
What about Telegram music bots? They get music straight from Spotify's, Deezer's, Yandex's, and RUclips's APIs at maximum quality.
I know, you would say Telegram itself isn't that private, but you can create a separate profile using a phone number alias, turn everything off in the Privacy settings, and turn on 2FA.
Telegram has a pretty convenient player like any other music app does, and a streaming feature as well, so you don't have to download all songs if you don't want to, or download them if you do.
What about Libretube ??
That's Piped and yeah it's ok but main issue is discovering new music
None of them, store your media offline.
Thanx. Got a BIG question....
I hate apple...tell ya why....you pay for music that they take back if you stop your subscription! Give me a break! Especially sucks because I am going to start using a degoogled droid.
Is there a way to transfer your music AWAY from them?
THANX!
Also....isn’t the government breaking into crypto? Is this montero safe from them?
Thanx for your work!!!
Blud don't even think of using an apple product and just get new pipe💀
Basically apple music is the only convenient option
U forgot blackhole
I have never streamed and never will, my music library. Pointless if you already own more music then the Streaming apps have. Physical media ONLY. The ENd, Stop wasting your money.
It's literally impossible for you to own more music than the streaming apps have.
Local library + Syncthing.
I am Waiting For This ?
OH PLEASE DO VIDEO STREAMING.
S flix
@Techlore Spotiflyer is in most countries illegal (look at theit bottom of their github page). Don't know about the others, but mentioning options that are illegal for most of the people watching this video, is not good.
Is it legal to use spotiflyer and self-host music?
depends on how you source the music :)
yes they download from youtube, which is fully legal
Using the apps and things it collects are like... Gender??? WTF DOES IT NEED TO KNOW MY GENDER??
spotify
RUclips music is the best
Most private is selfhosting.
Also gives you full freedom
Nice
Wait a min, what about ymusic? 🤔
I take your privacy advice "with a pinch of salt" meaning that if it doesn't gel with me, then I don't follow it. (Much of your content I appreciate - However not this time.)
I miss my parents
AMONG US??????????!!?!!?!!!!!?!!?!!?!?!
Yeah...apple products....nooooooo don't think so
I just don't understand the relevance of this video. I listen to all kinds of music online everyday for free without any tracking or other privacy concerns. I don't use any of the programs discussed in the video. For MANY years I've been listening to thousands of Internet radio stations for free and automatically downloading the tracks to my library, where I can then listen to them all I want for free forever. I've been doing this for 15+ years. I occasionally parse my favorite tunes into separate folders such as "Country Classics" or "Baroque", which is pretty easy since the stations tend to be focused on a particular genre of music. Then I also copy some of these folders to my smartphones. I have more than a million tracks in my library-all freely downloaded. I tried Spotify and Pandora many years ago but dismissed them because they cost me money and didn't allow me to download the tunes for free. StreamWriter is an example of such an Internet Radio program for the Windows OS. Macintosh has similar programs. Consequently, the applications discussed in this video just don't seem to make any sense to me.
That would just kill my storage space, also I'm on mobile 90% the time💀💀💀
I LOVE Spotify. I just enjoy everything about it BUT my account has been hacked OVER AND OVER AGAIN. I’m tired of my information being vulnerable. Please don’t use Spotify. Your home address as well as your credit card information is totally open if you use Spotify. I’ve changed my email, I’ve used the most obscure passwords- I have been repeatedly hacked on Spotify. When I try to talk to Spotify about it- there are no answers. Tracking data is one thing- your personal account info being fully available to anyone who wants it is totally different. Delete it.
i'd recommend bromite instead of brave..
Wrong. The most private streaming solution is to buy the CDs, rip them yourself and put them on your own media server to stream them as you see fit. In that way, you're actually paying for your music as opposed to "legally stealing" it from Spotify, etc.
The problem with you kids today is that you treat music like "Pick 'n' Mix sweeties" - very few modern artists actually succeed in making completely engaging albums these days so all you kids want to do is hear the two good tracks on each album and avoid the filler tracks.
The solution is very simple - listen to good music and pick albums from a few decades ago that can engage you for 40 minutes whilst you give them your full attention, as opposed to picking that "modern plastic crap" that is only there for background noise whilst you're doing something else.
There, fixed that for you. You're welcome. You can thank me later.
Any albums from a few decades ago that you recommend so I can be fully engaged?
@@cjcq7 There are so many, it depends what type of music you like.
If I was recommending "mainstream" music then I would probably go with "Ziggy Stardust" by David Bowie, "Who's Next" by The Who, "Sheer Heart Attack" by Queen, "Born Under A Bad Sign" by Albert King... my tastes are rock and blues.
@@terrydaktyllus1320 Thank you! I'll check them out.
I'd just download mp3s of my favorite songs from RUclips via youtube-dl.
no way the crypto bro didn't mention napster (tbh it looks pretty good), also I don't think qobuz doesn't collect much
No mention of Plex and Plexamp?
