Wizard and Glass is my favorite. The love story between Susan and Roland is amazing. I found myself falling in love with Susan alongside Roland. She reminded me of my wife; we started dating when we were late-teenagers and have been married for 10 years. I felt emotionally invested and was absolutely heartbroken at the end. After finishing that section of the book I had to pause reading for a couple of days just to process and contemplate what it would be like to lose my first love in such a traumatic way and at such a young age. My wife was sitting next to me as I read the paragraphs after the event that Susan suffered and couldn’t help myself from crying. I tell people “If you start The Dark Tower, please at the very least make it through Wizard and Glass.”
Knowing that you don't like Eyes off the Dragon, says a very lot about why I disagree with you about your understanding of these books. These are good reviews, and I'm not being hateful, but I can't get on board with your perspective.
The story within the story, specifically the Wind Through the Keyhole, that Roland tells that kid, is basically The Talisman, inasmuch as plot is concerned, which was basically Jason and the Argonauts, inasmuch as plot is concerned.
When I read Wind Through the Keyhole I’d already finished the full core series and at that point it was a nice dip back into Roland’s world. I don’t disagree with anything you said, but I didn’t have your dislike. Hope it hasn’t coloured your view of the Tower too much because Wolves of the Calla (for me) is the high watermark of the whole series. No spoilers but you’re going to reunited with someone from the extended reading which I think will make you very happy.
Ooooohhh I'm buzzing for this next book and the rest to follow. I just want everything to start connecting from the multiverse, as has been happening more and more.
Yes, in my mind, wolves is the best! I loved the story of Roland and Susan. Book reading mufahs need to get over the idea that a story goes from point A to point B without any turns or difficulties.
G'day mate. I've been enjoying your reviews of my favourite literary works with "The Dark Tower" cycle. Yes you're absolutely right about why I enjoyed "Wind through the keyhole." I read the whole saga from go to woe. Nothing at all in-between, because I had all the novels before I started. When the final novel was released I started the journey. Then some years passed before "Keyhole" was released. By the time I read it I was very pleased to return to Mid-World. I also figured it would be another "Roland's backstory" novel because of the novels placement in the cycle. I really enjoyed the fleshing out of Jamie "red hand" DeCurrys character. Very different to other Ka-Tet members Alain and 'Bert. Thanks mate 👍
Yeah this is definitely not meant to be read in its chronological place. It was just nice to revisit this world long after readers thought it was all done.
It is not good to read this as 4.5. It's doesn't work to get double flashbacks with no quest progress. It's a much better read after the core journey is complete. On a first read you are way to eager to get on the path of the beam proper.
That's a good point! I only ever read this after I'd read all of the others. So, even though stephen king wanted it shelved between those two, maybe it's more satisfying to read after the epic is over
I actually really liked this book, but, I have read the whole Dark Tower series. I have not gone through the expanded reading that you’re doing on this channel (though, I am working on it, recently I read Insomnia, and The Talisman, and I’m working on Black House now, so I have to finish it before watching your review, but, I loved your review of the Talisman. The point is, maybe there is some validity to the argument that reading the whole series, and coming back to The Wind Through The Keyhole, makes it a more enjoyable read.
Get to #5 and you’ll be happier! They are all right there and they get right to it. At first….. I’m only a bit into it, but it was great to get back to the Ka-tet!
I agree on most of what you said, but there was some things I did enjoy in the fairy tale. 1. The old widow (who’s name I’ve forgotten) was a decent character. I liked her more than the rest of the cast of the fairy tale. 2. The scenes with the tiger. 3. Randall Flagg. Besides that, the parts that were not fairy tale were meh. I have quite high hopes for Wolves of The Calla as well. Great review as always!
I’ve followed your journey thus far and I gotta say, I’m getting a little nervous for you. Haha Maybe you’re right, it’s just anticipation for the story. I think if you waited until the end then you’d like it more. Remember, it’s not about the ending, it’s the journey. Looking forward to your next review. Heads up: that next book does kick butt.
I took a break from The Dark Tower as well! Now we are at the same spot in the series! I was equally disappointed when I found out TDK 4.5 was just a filler piece, but super excited for Wolves of Calla, keep up the great videos!!
I don't think that Roland knew the Man in Black as Randall Flagg, but as Marten Broadcloak, it was only technically revealed that the Man in Black is definitely Randall (though it was quite obvious) when he met the Tick-Tock Man.
But by this point, at the end of Wizard and Glass, Roland did know that Randall Flagg and Marten Broadcloak were one and the same. In the Emerald City, Roland recognized him as Marten, but Marten told him that he goes by Randall Flagg now.
WTTKH was just beautiful! Dude, where are you coming from with this review? Honestly, I don’t get it. First, it was a reunion after the main story was told. Old friends, you know what I mean? Also, it just expands the beauty and history of mid-world…what’s this rush to get to the Tower? It’s beautiful, sublime and just added to the rich tapestry that is Mid-world…
@@OldJabbaJaws 2 things 1. I read it in the order it was suggested in Jimmy Mango's video which is what the 24 book journey was based on. 2. I read it in the order it's packaged in the collection. The book was advertised as 4.5. Does 4.5 come after 6? I just don't like fairy tales. I never have liked them.
I listened to it on Audible at 2.0 speed. I didn't enjoy this book at all. I just wanted it to end. Maybe it's bad timing but I wanted more of the characters from the 1st 4 books. It's labeled as book 4.5 but doesn't feel connected to the series at all.
Yeah it seems to be a Dark Tower book in name only right? I wouldn't mind if it was back story like Wizard and Glass but most of this book was a fairy tale which felt totally unrelated.
This book is best read after the last book

This book is outside the main series. It's a great book by itself and a chance to hang out with the ka-tet once more!

I still haven’t read it but I love to hear people talk about it
This book is unironically better than the last three books in the series. And I never had a problem with the end of the series.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. It really wasn't for me. 😔

This one was my favorite of the series.
This one was a let down. But they do get better. 👍 And I agree on the pronunciation of Cuthbert.
That's encouraging to hear honestly, and yeah... Cuthbert cannot become CYOOTHbert in my mind 😂
Also, I think it’s funny that book 19 was a book you really didn’t like. Like, “I SAID IT ROLAND! I SAID 19!” And went mad! lol.
I think that book came out after the last book in the series…I wrote this before you said it about a minute in haha
Yeah you're right! Some people said I should have read it after the series but it was kind of pitched as book 4.5 in the series.
100% he isn't Qthbert!
I’m about 150 pages into TWTTK and I’ve decided I’m going to skip it and move onto WoC
I don't blame you at all mate. You're a Southend fan judging by your profile name is that right?
I am. I must have done something terrible in a past life 😅
You shouldnt have read this before Wolves. It's meant to be read last.
I hate that the collection slots it between 4 and 5.
Yeah you're right! I actually released an updated reading order video where I suggest first time readers leave this until the end.
if thats not you thing why even pick the book up to begin with. maybe read a books synopsis first instead of going in with certain expectations
Man, don't you think that he might have embellished the story to fit his Marjorie into the story?
