Rolex aren't marketing this watch as a $250,000 watch. It's how the market works, but that's not the same as marketing. Sellers can ask whatever price they want, and you, as a customer, can decide not to buy the item for that price. When the supply starts exceeding the demand, the prices will come down. For $ 250,000 the demand should be pretty low.
Why they'd take it out of production so quickly is luxury marketing 101: maintaining an air of exclusivity. It's especially important for Rolex because the first justification most folks have for buying what's not nearly the best watch for the money (other than status signaling, which few say out loud) is that they hold their value and that only happens with restricted supply. That they now can control the supply of 2nd-hand watches AND reap the even higher profits of the used market does even more to justify any revenue lost on the individual sales of new watches had they kept it in production.

6:45 That’s true, but they’re often the most reliable. I’ve come around on my Rolex hate to this view: they’re often status symbols for people who know nothing of watches. But they’re reliable and the ergonomics are crazy good-and maybe it’s just that…they *work* and that’s enough.
I absolutely share the annoyance around this watch leaving the catalogue, best modern Daytona by far. What I find interesting is that nobody seems to be commenting on the fact that this was created for the 100th anniversary of Le Mans, making it no different than other brands who produce anniversary pieces for a given year and once that year is over they're out of production. One example of this was the JLC Master Control sector dial collection to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Master Control line. Regular production, pieces weren't numbered or limited, but after that anniversary year they left the catalogue. Now there's a yellow gold version of this watch but because there isn't a 100th anniversary to celebrate anymore, it's an off catalogue piece with zero marketing tied to it. Rolex didn't really do anything different compared to their peers in the industry, but they made something so desirable and because everyone is already annoyed with them this did nothing to help that cause.
I agree with most of the points made here, including the point about the Rolex marketing department 😂. I would say though, that Rolex are among the best designed watches of any brand. Name a watch category and there is usually a representative Rolex near the top of the list.
Solution, buy a regular Daytona and swap the dial. I get that it would piss some people off, but fuck em, you can always swap the dial back before selling
Everyone likes to think that this will all blow up in their face and that they're actually soooo stupid to not pump out more watches to meet demand, but the fact of the matter is the more expensive and up-market they have gotten the more they have been rewarded. You're meant to want this, but you're not meant to have it. If you really don't like the direction the brand is going the best thing you can do is to simply stop paying them any mind.
This watch appears to have a flawed dial. Does anyone else notice how the indices and numerals on the LH sub-dial are thicker and not uniform with the indices and numerals on the other two sub-dials? Very, very unusual to see an inconsistency like this on a Rolex dial.
probably my current answer to "if waved a wand and you magically received one watch..." but also I will never in a million years pay the money that precious metal Daytonas sell for.
This is the whole thing you are right. This is not a watch I would ever wear because it looks awful. The Zenith original looks very good. When people start asking you, you can then educate them which might lead to a conversation about flippers and speculators.
For real. Rolex bracelets feel like silk on the wrist. Even neo-vintage oyster bracelets blow away a lot of modern brands in terms of how it feels on the wrist.
He's probably the only owner in this country that didn't list this watch on the secondary used market. MOST of these watches ended up sold for 7 times it's listed price. Just like most Daytona watches (who are offered & sold to guys who really didn't ask for a Daytona) end up in the used market. There are more Daytona's for sale or sold than in use, in a sock drawer, or in a collection.
This watch should be a tool watch and worn by people of multiple social/economic levels, if they so desired to buy it. That was in the past. Unfortunately, today it is the exact opposite of that.

6:45 That’s true, but they’re often the most reliable. I’ve come around on my Rolex hate to this view: they’re often status symbols for people who know nothing of watches. But they’re reliable and the ergonomics are crazy good-and maybe it’s just that…they *work* and that’s enough.
Absolutely beautiful watch regardless and I can't help but love the movement tech!
They will produce it in yellow gold now, probably for another year.
You brought it on a point!👍
I really like the theorie why they dicontinued it.
But the Kevin Hart F€%# you Rolex reference (as in F€^% you Tom Brady), had me in tears 😂
I thought they were making another LeMans this year, so the 24hr movement still makes sense, but agree with most of the rest
Solution, buy a regular Daytona and swap the dial. I get that it would piss some people off, but fuck em, you can always swap the dial back before selling
Other than an excellent video…
Gotta ask: Where did you get that red over-shirt / jacket you were wearing?
Rolex is AP now, primarily hype.
Sadly true. Still some great watches if you can at msrp, otherwise nope.
I’d enjoy wearing this watch for 10 minutes before somebody pinned me down and hacked my hand off to get to it.
LOL loved this video. One of your best.
It’s a Rough-and-Tumble Terrific today!
Best at marketing and best bracelets.
For real. Rolex bracelets feel like silk on the wrist. Even neo-vintage oyster bracelets blow away a lot of modern brands in terms of how it feels on the wrist.
Beautiful watch , I’ll stick to my G-Shocks this watch would just give me anxiety 😂
And now available as a super clone.
Not in 18 karat white gold it’s not. Fake watches are for fake people.
@@Anonymouslyme1 The first part of your patronising comment is correct the second part is offensive and total bollocks. Who do you think most superclone Rolexes are sold to? Yeah that's right owners of the real thing. I have a superclone Submariner and it's one of the best watches I have ever had including real Rolex watches, Tudors, Breitlings etc.
@@borjastick No, thousands of fake Dayonas aren't bought by thousands of owners of real $300K pieces 😂
@@Anonymouslyme1fake people are fake.
Rolexes are aluminum cans anyways. Whoever buys a real or a fake doesn't get the BEAUTY some $15 Steve Madden with gorgeous fleur-de-lis dial and CZs, TOP STOCK PERFORMER of the last two decades, deliver.
Best Rolex video ever. 👍
I have a question… you said Rolex doesn’t make the toughest watches… I understand that statement comparing it to a quartz watch but what mechanical watch is tougher and what tests are there that show that? I’m sort of curious since my dream watch has been a Rolex because I see so many vintage models still around that I figure that they are really robustly built. Even the guy from wristwatch revival says they are a really robust movements.
My guess is that they will bring it out in steel as soon as they catch up to pent-up demand in order to keep the hype going over the next decade.
Agreed. Also those are factory stickers still on, how is it not double standard when ADs are being told to remove all upon sale.
You are right. Rolex is best about marketing. Thats it
Absolutely astute; completely hilarious.
Discontinuation is just Rolex’s version of a limited edition, they know the term limited edition is desperate so they create the same hype with short production runs.
Not sure why people complain, just buy something else
10 months in the market,,,,I didn't even see the real watch yet, and they discontinued
talking about unicorn watch LOL
I am not a big fan of Daytona, but for this one ,,,I will make an exception 😂😂😂
Woah some flex!! I'm on the list for a 36mm OP. Honestly, at this stage it's the only Rolex I like
I honestly don't know why you'd buy any other non-bezel Rolex over an OP. Same movement, almost the same case as the EX1 and DJ and way cheaper. Hopefully you get it soon.
@@Nefville agreed 100% !! The op is lovely. Tried them on yesterday and made up my mind
Hey Evan, long time fan! Would love to hear your thoughts and see a video on the new Explorer 40 please. I’ve watched your videos on the 36 and 39 many times and would really like to get your perspective. Thanks!
I would like to agree that the only thing special about a Rolex is that people think its special, but its not true. They make better luxury watches for the price (RETAIL) than pretty much anyone, they're thin, super solid and reliable as hell, with good looking designs that influence the entire industry. While I absolutely hate the brand for all the reasons that everyone else does, and have been personally burned by them, I do think they make great watches. PS f***k Rolex. That I do agree with.
“I imagine these guys were really drunk”😂😂
Looks like Rolex gives its customers the old "reverse-panda" once again.
