The drone pilot started at age 15, and said there was nothing else like flying drones, especially at speed. The sport could now even lead to a career, with Mr Whibley named the Freestyle Champion at the Australian Drone Nationals in 2019.
There are not many other speed racing drone pilots in north-western NSW, and Mr Whibley said his city competitors were very jealous of his practice pad. "I've been flying FPV drones for about five years now, so I've had a fair bit of experience, but there have been lots of crashes, I can tell you that,"

To late. They already have. FPV is now illegal.
I'm from the USA. Is it really against the law to fly a drone? Even on a privately owned farm or backyard?
This is Australia. Everything is banned.
Even in Kenya it's banned...it's like the hobby grows so fast that the "authority" stops it to allow them to control it however they wish to..

Too late. The footage shown is already only possible with illegal flights.
It currently costs over $400 just to get approval to fly in 1 location. You have to apply to fly in each and every location at over $400 a pop. If your application is denied, you are still out of pocket over $400. If you are caught flying without approval from CASA you face thousands of dollars in fines. You can thank the Civil Aviation Safety Authority for this.

In the Australian regulation it’s illegal to fly fpv, only line of sight flying is allowed.
Great job of showing the positive aspects of FPV flight. This is the real spirit of it, it's an amazing step in human ability & we just want to explore the world from this new perspective. This was totally born from hobbyists cludging together RC plane & CCTV parts with community based open source software, we should be encouraged & not criminalised.
It's a real pity that those who don't really understand can see the hobby as a threat & focus solely on the negative aspects.
Great to see a positive article about this fun, educational and character building hobby. Great work ABC.

I started last year I'm alittle disabled and can't walk very well. With Fpv I fly LOL

Now that ABC has featured this young fellah I wonder if CASA are going to go after him like they did Final Glide Aus after he was featured by one of the commercial stations a few years ago as it is illegal to fly with goggles anywhere in Oz but at on authorized club grounds....
CASA went after Final Glide?! I didn't know that, explains why he's off the radar though :(
@@shortlytall7926 Final Glide is off the radar for other reasons so far as I can tell.
But old mate here was flying on his own property with permission which I believe carries exemptions for FPV if a member of MAAA or AMAS
@@grounddodger3212 New regs in the US will require full remote ID to fly on your own property or only at club field without.
@@grounddodger3212 No exemption to loss of LOS when operating a UAV Period, under CASA regulations only a second person/observer.
I believe another exception to the law is that you can fly FPV indoors. No issues from CASA there.

Great effort Heath. What is the longest range & Battery time for one run.
Using a Crossfire tx/rx setup, you can go about 10km or something.
Laws in Australia stop you from being able to do any long range (out of line of sight) flying anyway.
Battery time is around 5 minutes, from a 1300mah 6s battery.

Nope. You need an FPV racing quadcopter which is flown in acro mode. This is what real flying is all about. The Mavics are toys.

I just spent $1400 to get in to the hobby and I can't even fly ANYWHERE. Unless I apply for approval for each and every location I wish to fly.
@@simonleonarder3388 Are you sure? When did this come into effect? The proposed laws were not finished (because they were poorly thought out and wouldnt have worked) and had not been before parliament last time i checked. Far as i know if its recreational and under 2kg it is still (as of Aug 2020) ok to fly in unrestricted airspace so long as you follow the guild lines and regulations. Just had a google and the only mention of this on the first page is an article from 2019. Other, more up to date sites do not reflect this. Still, we have to fight the power at be as they try to monetise our public and free air space. Great to see the ABC(media) be positive about the hobby regardless. BTW do you follow Xjet?

@@macslife On CASAs website it says FPV is completely banned in all instances without the right permits. They killed the hobby when it was just gaining traction.

Great piece, Its a so stupid that CASA has made what is a base human desire to be free like a bird, an outlawed pastime. even the slightly less crazy 250g rules from other countries, in Australia are 200g. And FPV is only allowed at races. I don't want to race, I want to dance like a bird through the trees. But good work showing everyone what we want to do , but cant legally. maybe a human will be put in charge of OZ freedom hobbies that fit in the palm of your hand, and we wont be treated like terrorists in manned aircraft. FPV drones under 100g can be flown indoors but all FPV is banned outdoors. How ridiculous.

FPV is significantly more fun as you're actually flying.
My 13 year old son worked hard to save up for his own drone and bought himself a Mavic Mini after completing many chores. I read all the CASA rules about how to fly and how not to fly the drone including looking at local government guidelines and all was good. We went to a local footy oval here in WA and began to fly the drone without another person in sight. A council Ranger showed up 10min later and asked us to leave stating that people needed to feel safe at the park. I said no one is here he said it doesn't matter in the off chance someone was to arrive at the park they need to feel safe. I respectfully said the CASA rules don't say anything about in the off chance someone rocks up at the massive oval where your flying your drone to pack up and leave. I said we read the local rules as well and we'll make sure we don't fly over anyone and stay over 30m away at all times. He said no you must have missed it on our webpage you have to leave you can't fly drones anywhere in our city council the rules are on our website go look again. I went home and guess what not a thing was even mentioned about flying drones in the area not even a single refrence to drones anywhere on their website except to say they use drones to spy on ppl driving in 4x4 block out zones. I checked the website for the next council over and it said as long as you follow the CASA rules you're welcome to fly drones here. I really hope my local council comes to terms with the fast pace of our technologically changing world and encourage the younger generation to embrace it rather than bullying them to pack up and go home. Who know one day some bright kid out there might contribute to building the first commercial flying car or go into robotics and help invent/create bionic limbs or something cool like that.

I fly a drone like the one in this video, so it's far more intimidating to a spectator than a DJI phantom /mavic, etc is.

I'm in Wanneroo, and I've had rangers come up to me asking me about the hobby, not turfing me off the oval.
Most people are curious and/or impressed and not anti in the slightest.

Welcome to the hobby. Yes, be prepared to face some ignorance and paranoia at times when you're flying your drone. A few years ago, I was flying my Syma X8C quadcopter in my backyard. I was keeping it within the boundary line of the property and had no camera attached. And yet a neighbour on our right side was convinced that I was flying my quadcopter over the property on the left and continuing on to the next property after that. And that I was supposedly filming the people on the left with my quad as I was flying over them. What a load of nonsense. Completely 100% untrue.

You can pick up a 5" ready-to-fly freestyle drone for around AU$500
You'd need all the other stuff like spare parts, transmitter, goggles, etc etc.
You're looking at about $1500 -$2000 for a similar setup to this guy.

Even if your part of a club and at a designated model aerodrome you still need CASA authorisation to fly FPV. It makes it very prohibitive to get into this hobby legally in Australia.

What really improved FPV drone footage was GoPro figuring out how to almost perfectly stabilise their footage using an accelerometer and wide angle lens.. Prior to this innovation, FPV footage was hard to watch..
